Awesome surf music.......2006-07-15
The opening track, Ocean Beach, alone is worth the price. I have seen the Mermen in person several times, and one has to SEE Jim Thomas, and be a guitar player, to appreciate the way this man manhandles the instrument. He is a player who will never be duplicated. He routinely grabs sequences of maximum-finger-stretching chords through eighth-note-speed passages...while staring intensely at audience members, away from his guitar. I think he uses bridge-cable-gauge strings to keep from ripping them apart.
Part of surf music, I think, is an attempt to communicate the vastness of the ocean and sky when you're floating on the surface. You don't get the same sensations from the deck of a boat that you get on a surfboard. Since the sea is the most dynamic medium of forces a man can enter, only a dynamic artistic medium, like music, can begin to describe it. If it could be represented statically, surfers would paint.
Hence the spacious guitar effects and strange song titles, and mindbending compound adjectives necessary to describe the music.
This is an early album, and the production is not pro enough to capture the excitement of every song, but if you like surf music at all, you should try this modern update.
A Celestial Wall Of Sound.......2001-11-28
In my own humble opinion, Jim Thomas is one of the most creative, gifted and articulate guitarists around. Every song here is thoughtfully arranged, and brought to life in a simple yet, undeniably beautiful fashion. Granted this is their first studio effort, and bigger productions lay ahead. However, all of these songs reveal what is at the heart of The Mermen: Epic-sized surf with a delicate soul. This is also much more represntative of their 'live' sound. No generic, three-chord, go-go beach tunes here, this is majestic and ominous surf rock for the future.
The first release--a benchmark recording.......2001-07-02
Krill Slipping is a good collection of music. It is easily the most accessible of their recordings, and shows their hommage to 60's style surf music. That being said, the Mermen redefine the Genre for the post modern, post psychedelic era. Lets face it gang the genie is out of the bottle. Roll with it. This is not my favorite Mermen CD, however, they are all recordings that, if not to kill for, at least to have and to hold. This is recently reissued, so get it while you can. The Mermen are easily the greatest psychedelic, greatest surf, and simply the heaviest band that there ever was. Get every CD you can. Also, if you like the Mermen, check out he Surf Coasters.

The Best Surf Rock CD........2005-07-03
Just wish I could find another with this tempo and sound. This is not your run of the mill frantic surf music, this album is my favorite of it's genre without question.
In the beginning..........2001-12-01
How can you not love this album. Yes, it isn't perfect, but damn near, and it shows so much promise and talent that you have to have it to understand how these talented musicians evolved over their next few releases. This recording is more firmly planted in the tradition of surf music, but its minimalism is refreshingly pure and earnest. Krill Slipping, originally titled, Lonely Road, is a powerful, emotional tune, filled with longing and frustration. There is nothing pretensious or phony about this recording. I just do not understand the comments of previous reviewers who didn't like it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion--but maybe they should give it another shot while sitting in their car watching the sunset over the Pacific.

not for everyone.......2000-08-29
This is early Mermen and is definately very different from Songs or Euphoria. No feedback, very clean guitar, much more "surf" than later releases. The songs on this CD reminded me alot of Duanne Eddy, a kind of 50's ambience crossed with the Ventures. All in all I found it very enjoyable and actually play it more than any other Mermen CD with the exception of the new one.
Krill is da KILL.......2000-06-22
This CD, first sold by the band (on tape cassette only) out of the bassist's open bass case, is the infant cries and murmurs of a very unique surf band (a term used to pigeon-hole their style, which isn't always surf and never claimed to be). To really appreciate the music, and I hate to say this because it really isn't fair to those reviewers from Texas, Arizona, and yes, even the rich man's cradle of Laguna Beach California, you have to live eat and breathe Northern California surf (as Jim Thomas does), with the occasional escape to Baja or third world vistas beyond our dot-com fantasy. For this is where the music is rooted, and once you have surfed in the cold desolate waters that lie well above Santa Cruz or rolled down Mex 1, deep below Cape San Quentin, you will understand, and finally nod your head in true congruence with the messages reverberating from Jim Thomas' skull. The Mermen do not make silly surf music, there's just too much of that around, and woe be to the individual who indulges in such nonsense. Ocean Beach, for example, is a brutal song for a massively brutal beach, located along San Francisco's ragged gray western edge. Come surf here, come drown here, and you'll understand. Big Day at the Bay is well within the same category, and as I recall, an extremely difficult song to execute... but a commanding masterpiece, a foundation for The Mermen's sound. It's the sound the ocean makes, it's Neptune slamming his fist onto an empty playa, it's the cries of the fishermen driving their boats up impossible 30 foot faces north of Mendocino, it's the open expanse of sky, cactus and sand of mysto Baja breaks, fueled by nature's substances, legal and otherwise. It's the insane scramble beneath the ocean's skin to live, thrive and survive. It can be raw, unfiltered, stumbling and even garage. But isn't that life itself? The best of the bunch (and if for no other reason, makes this CD worthy of a buy decision) is the quieter, more reflective numbers, like Abalone Daze and By The Sea I Will Stay Forever. Both send the mind floating over sand and sea. The Whales is a dark number, demanding respect for all that is of the sea. What other music could take you to these depths and let you come back more schooled, more understanding of our brethren down below? The rolling of the ocean's back, the mysteries of her depths, and the merciless lessons she teaches mankind year in and year out are all addressed here, in this first effort by Jim Thomas and THE MERMEN, the unsung heroes of the coast. Each album from here forward progresses and evolves - each is a snapshot of time, now a book on the shelf, but remember, here is where it all started. Enjoy, and go surfing.
