A great (but incomplete) collection..........2003-02-10

Jennifer Warnes' newest "Best Of" collection is a great CD, even though it ignores her signature hit "Right Time Of The Night" and her #1 hit "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life." But rather than concentrate on what's missing, I'll look at what's included.

First of all, all these tracks have been digitally remastered, which is reason enough to own the CD. The terrific remastering job breathes new life into old hits like "Up Where We Belong" and "I Know A Heartache When I See One," and it also adds new dimensions to Warnes classics like "First We Take Manhattan" and "Rock You Gently." Warnes' cover of Juice Newton's 1977 hit "Come To Me" (and a hit for Warnes in 1982) has never sounded better, and "Bird On A Wire" is pure pop heaven.

Yes, this collection is rather expensive, because it is a German import, but it's worth it for listeners who really want to experience Jennifer Warnes recordings at their very best. Spring for it; you'll be glad you did.

An incredible album.......2002-07-19

This is an incredible compilation of work by the underappreciated and very brilliant Jennifer Warnes. The final track, a heartbreaking rendition of the old folk song, "Hard Times Come Again No More," is nothing short of perfect. Buy this album - it's expensive as it is imported, but it's worth every penny.

2006 Anthology of Recordings from One of America's Most Respected Pop Singers. Her First Big Break Came as a Regular on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" and Recorded her First Album for London's Parrot Records. She Joined the L.a. Cast of the Musical "Hair" in the Lead Role. After that Stint, She Became a Lifelong Friend and Collaborator with Leonard Cohen and Sang Backup for Him on Several Albums and Toured with Him. When She Relaunched her Solo Recording Career Almost a Decade Later in 1977 , Many Mistook her Records for a New Linda Ronstadt Song. But it was her Tribute to Cohen in 1986 that Brought Immense Critical Acclaim. This Acclaim Became Mass Media Acclaim When She Recorded and Popularized the Theme Songs to the Films "an Officer and a Gentleman" ("up Where We Belong") and "Dirty Dancing" ("i've Had the Time of My Life"), in Duet with Joe Cocker and Bill Medley, Respectively. Take Manhattan All The Way.......2004-02-28

Sometimes, when a artist intends to cover a song, it just becomes better with another singer, and a bit of age into it. For Joe Cocker, he truly has defined that era of covering nicely. He has covered so many songs, and spun them into his own. This song, First We Take Manhattan is absolutely no acception. The song originally was recorded by Leonard Cohen, but the original version was too much manufactured without a feel of organicness inside. The version Joe Cocker conjured absolutely intends to splash a feel that it is his potent own song ever. It is now found on the Ultimate Collection CD of his, but I strongly suggest you listen to it, if you're a Joe Cocker fanatic. If not, you don't know what you're missing.

Steve Ross has such an affinity with Cole Porter that no less an authority than Michael Feinstein said he couldn't begin to approach Ross's "perfect rendition" of "Can Can." That song is only one of the 25 Porter tunes both familiar and unfamiliar collected on this 1996 album, Close. Like fellow cabaret legend Bobby Short, Ross doesn't have the most beautiful singing instrument, but he has an expert way around a lyric, and his piano accompaniments are perfect ("I Get a Kick Out of You" is only one example). If you happen to like New York cabaret, you'll happen to like Steve Ross. --David Horiuchi

Steve Ross is the ultimate performer when it comes to Cole Porter's songs. He's such a gifted piano player, has a lovely voice, and his arrangements are so perfect you want to crank up the volume and belt out the tune yourself. He has such sensitivity and emotion, knows just when to change tempo or syncopate a beat. I've driven many miles to see him perform and I'd love to do it again. He's the best, and this album is his finest. Absolute perfection.

Most of these songs are familiar, but Steve Ross' unusual capacity to clarify lyrics with his voice, his enunciation, and even his piano accompaniment combine to bring out the wit and sophistication of these songs in ways that are new and utterly delightful (not to mention delovely). Altogether enjoyable.

Steve Ross is without doubt one of the finest cabaret artists currently working, and this recording amply proves his talent. Steve takes loving stroll through the Porter canon, embellishing each song with his own brand of wit and sensitivity. His excellence as a pianist and knowing way with a lyric make for a superb listen. Every track is a superlative example of Steve's artistry. Not to be missed.
