5 out of 5 stars Better then the other two, even if those are really good..........2007-06-19

Well, I just bought this recently, and I have to say this is a really good CD. But, of course, it's not for everybody. People who liked "The Black Parade" and even "Three Cheers" may not like this, as it is some of the hardest rock out there. Almost all of the songs on this album are at least two times harder than "Hang 'Em High". Also, parents, this CD deserves a PA sticker, as in one of the songs there are eight f-words (all of the songs aren't like that, though).

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best one of them all.......2007-05-24

Raw, haunting. Any MCR fan must have this in his/her collection. The only song added that would make it a 6 is "Sister to Sleep" as it exists today (recorded as either a demo or at a club by someone). You will play it over and over and won't be able to help yourself. BUY IT ABSOLUTELY.

5 out of 5 stars My Chemical romance.......2007-05-08

Wasn't sure when I first bought it, but now absolutely love it. The riffs, the lyrics everything we have come to know and love from MCR. This is an album I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars My Chemical Romance.......2007-05-04

I love this album. It's not mainstream, but it's still appealing to people. This album is a must for anyone who considers themselves a fan of My Chemical Romance. It's dark, fast-paced, and filled with meaninful and emotional lyrics. (Pay attention to the lyrics remember) Each song is different in its own way.
~~REASONS TO BUY THIS ALBUM~~
*Headfirst for Halos-Don't get fooled by the upbeat tempo, listen carefully to the words. Really great song, though.
*Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us-This song is great, it has a music video if you didn't know already.
*Demolition Lovers-Starts at slow, but has a fast, loud ending. Who couldn't love this song?! I don't know who...
*Early Sunsets Over Monroeville: A slower song. It has this sort of eerie quality to it I think.
Oh yeah, that's just SOME of the songs on this album. So, anyways this is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars My Chemical Romance.......2007-04-24

Okay, this is a great CD. It is MUCH darker than The Black Parade and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, though. But I still love it because...
~Demolition Lovers: this is the song that I first really loved from My Chemical Romance, more than The Black Parade or Three Cheers stuff.
~Vampires Will Never Hurt You: This is another awesome song, I can listen to it non-stop!!
~Drowning Lessons: I really like this song, too... but what is up with the end, how it stops and then starts again??!!! whatever, it's still good.
Anyways, those are my favorite songs off this CD. So many people only know The Black Parade stuff, but really I think this is so much better.

4 out of 5 stars A key ingredient in Skynyrd discography.......2007-03-03

This CD, and Nuthin' Fancy, show that good 'ol Shorty Medlocke influence with the diverse, but very southern music songwriting. Bullets is a must have if you are a Ronnie Van Zant fan first, the Skynyrd band second. This is "gone fishin" and sitting on the porch music at it's finest.
If you are a new Skynyrd fan,get One More From The Road,Pronounced and then Street Survivors. Also consider Gold and Platinum and the boxed set,if you want a major portion of the whole pie.
Enjoy .

3 out of 5 stars Put 'Em Back Were They Belong.......2007-01-29

Give Me Back My Bullets is the only reason I purchased this CD for that song alone it is worth the price of the CD. The rest is fine, but not my favorite from Skynyrd.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Skynyrd.......2006-10-07

Of the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd albums, this one is the most underrated, and that is unfortunate. This album stands up there beside the classics "Pronounced" and "Second Helping" as one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's finest.

Highlights here include both studio and live versions of the excellent title track, and studio and live versions of the hidden gem "Cry For The Bad Man." The latter song is one of Skynyrd's finest tracks, but unfortunately is not included on most of the compilations in any form. Then there's the rocker "Double Trouble," the beautiful "All I Can Do Is Write About It," and the studio version of the concert staple "Searching."

If you don't already own "Pronounced" and "Second Helping," by all means go over right now and buy both, but be sure to pick this one up while you're at it. If you do own both of those, "Gimme Back My Bullets" won't disappoint. And if you're one of those unfortunate people who only know the "new" Lynyrd Skynyrd, be forewarned that those CDs are likely to begin collecting dust as soon as you hear your first few bars of Skynyrd with the late Ronnie Van Zant.

Rest In Peace Ronnie. We miss you, brother. One listen to this album, or any other Lynyrd Skynyrd album up to and including "Street Survivors," will show the listener why he's so sorely missed.

4 out of 5 stars don't you dare cry for the bad man.......2006-03-23

This album has a country sound to a lot of their songs which I really enjoyed. Some of the more rockin' songs are Gimme back my bullets and double trouble. I got the same old blues is a slower song with a nice groove to it and a harmonica solo. Some of the songs have female vocals, like on double trouble, which are enjoyable. If you want to hear a more country sound from lynyrd skynyrd then you should defenitly check out this cd.

3 out of 5 stars back in the saddle?.......2006-02-13

this review of "gimme back my bullets" comes from a observer of the music skynyrd produced not as a obbessed fan whom buys everyhing i've got "one more from the road" one of the best double cd albums ever made..yet i've only ever ventured into the greatest hits packaged that are shoved down my thoat at every corner it seems every few months a new greatest hits album is released..so really i bought a double disc and was overly happy
i thought to myself i'd see what their proper albums were like
and this album to my opipion is abit too country for me not sayin' it's bad..just either he needed to be more acoustic rock with less of the country tinge[i hate country]
or balls out hard rock that i know skynyrd could do..
it's a shame really because there's a great album in there
it's just swamped..but over accesses and not too many highs
sorry

5 out of 5 stars Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28

The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13

I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10

Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.

This is the Sousa record for people who are serious about marches. Sousa was the greatest march composer in the history of, well, marching, and this disc includes many fresh and interesting pieces that will likely be unfamiliar, as well as a couple of favorites (including "The Liberty Bell," famous as the theme to Monty Python's Flying Circus). But by and large, this disc focuses on the less well known pieces, though there's not a dud in the lot. Sousa had a special gift for orchestration and for writing tunes with real rhythmic interest; his marches never sound dull. Frederick Fennell is the simply the best wind band conductor around, and these performances are standard- setters. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fennell Brings Out the Best in Sousa 's Marches.......2004-02-21

This is an outstanding CD. The sound quality is very good. The instrumental balance is very good. It's interesting to compare the rather subtle difference in the percussion section performance between the two recording dates, particulalarly the cymbalist.
Sousa had an uncanny ability to score the cymbal strike at places which add significantly to the listening experience.
Hats off to Sousa, Fennell, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble

4 out of 5 stars A solid Sousa album that comes up a bit short.......2003-01-26

In the 60s, Fennell and the Eastman Wind ensemble recorded a good amount of marches by Sousa, many released on this album, and the rest (as far as I know) on the album Hands Across the Sea. As many of Sousa's best marches are on that later album, this one falls a bit short of greatness -- but not my much.

Sousa knew his marches, writting something like 200 of them, and almost every one of these is a great example of how to write a good march. Indeed, The Liberty Bell and Manhatten Beach are two of my alltime favorite marches. However, being prolific often means that there will be misses, and many here, while written well, just aren't all that memorable. I'd be hard pressed to be able to identify such pieces as The Gallant Seventh, New Mexico, or the Black Horse Troop unless I had just listened to them.

Still, one has to admire the creative way Sousa sometimes put his music together. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company uses the song 'Aude Lang Syne' for its trio, and it fits so well that it's hard to believe he didn't write it himself. The Liberty Bell uses tubular bells in *just* the right spots that it makes an impact every time one listens. And Sabre And Spurs uses wook blocks to simulate horses, which also works great.

So overall, this is a solid album that has its ups and downs. The sound quality is great, haveing a certain amount of 'bite' that's almost impossible with digital recordings, the playing impecable, and there's plenty of variety.

5 out of 5 stars The Mastery of Fennell.......2002-01-28

I've owned this CD for several years, and bought a copy recently as a Christmas gift. Frederick Fennell is a modern master of band and marches, and I own several of his recordings. What makes this CD a standout for me is the Mercury Living Presence recording and remastering method. I own over two dozen of this series because Living Presence does indeed represent a different method of producing music for the recorded media. It DOES sound more lifelike to me than conventional multimike recordings. To anyone considering purchase of this CD I'd recommend also ordering 'Screamers', the Living Presence CD of circus marches. To me this is feel-good music at its best, and terrific for listing in the car! Additionally, the Living Presence series stands out for its excellent liner notes with explanations of the Living Presence method. This CD is a keeper. Incidentally, the recipient of this CD has since gone out and bought several other Living Presence CD's after hearing this!s

5 out of 5 stars MASTERFUL RENDITIONS IN GLORIOUS RECORDED SOUND.......2001-11-16

An utterly masterful set, containing many of Sousa's unjustly neglected works. (An integral recording of his complete marches is overdue by a good half-century.*) Fennell conducts with incredible verve, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble responds in kind, with immaculately tight and polished performances. The recording is demonstration-class. Sousa has never sounded better, and probably never will.

*EDIT: Actually, a nearly-complete recording of the marches has been available, as of the time of this review, for at least a good quarter-century--first on LP, now on CD: that being, a series of analog recordings by The Detroit Concert Band, led by Leonard B. Smith. Currently available from Walking Frog Records (on five CDs), the DCB/Smith collection unfortunately suffers from some serious problems--not the least of which is the highly variable and substandard quality of the recorded sound.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic well preserved.......2001-09-28

This one's a Classic and the sound is remarkable considering
when it was recorded. Viva Mercury Records!

I do wish more of the familiar Sousa stuff was included.

4 out of 5 stars I'm glad someone remembers how to ROCK!.......2006-12-16

Recently the local classic rock radio station here in Atlanta changed its format so that it now only plays modern rock, which essentially means an endless loop of Disturbed, Korn, Nickelback, and Linkin Park. What exactly does this have to do with Bullets and Octane's latest album In the Mouth of the Young? Just this: if I have a radio station that is supposed to be dedicated to playing new "rock", why in the hell do I have to keep hunting on my own for bands that actually ROCK?

I'm mainly a metal guy, but there are times when only a good straightforward hard rock album will do. I don't want emo or nu-metal or whatever-core. I want loud, fast, heavy ROCK. I want bands like Brand New Sin, Fireball Ministry, Black Stone Cherry, the Quill, and this band, Bullets and Octane. I took a chance on this album at my local used CD store based largely on the album cover, which has to be the coolest cover in just about forever. In the Mouth of the Young hits you like a heart attack from the very first notes of "Going Blind" and never lets up until the album is over. To my ears, Bullets and Octane sounds like Social Distortion meets Motorhead meets a nail-spiked baseball bat. For all the speed and aggression, there is still that underlying sense of melody that keeps you engaged and able to sing (yell) along with the songs.

This is good stuff, people. It's the kind of no-nonsense ROCK that you just can't seem to find these days. This is the kind of real ROCK that modern rock radio should be playing, but instead will completely ignore unless someone starts rapping over the album or whining about how g*ddamn melancholy they are.

5 out of 5 stars Without Bullets and Octane, what's left to sin for? .......2006-11-18

Okay. I have a little confession for everyone. I'm not a long-time fan of the band... hell, I only heard about them a couple of days before Family Values Tour rolled into Washington D.C. because I was offered a ticket to see one of my all-time favorite bands, Dir en grey. And actually, the members of Dir en grey are best friends with Bullets and Octane so I was willing to give them a listen, although I was doubtful of 3/4ths of the bands at FVT, given that their headliners were KoRn and Deftones. Which I dislike both of them, except for the fact that Jonathan Davis actually recognized true talent with Dir en grey and invited them on. Anyway. I was disillusioned already at the horrible performance of Walls of Jericho and was contemplating leaving the Pavillion until Dir en grey hit the stage until I heard the opening riffs of "Save Me Sorrow." And I sat straight up in my seat in awe. They were fantastic. They sounded so together and professional, yet so raw and intense. I fell in love instantly. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet them that day (because I spent the money to meet Dir en grey) but they stuck in my mind. My boyfriend then bought me the album and I fell in love with every song on the album. They're raw, gritty, yet melodic and polished. You know that they have been playing together for a while with the sync they have together. I'm not going to sit here and detail critique the album for you... because that'll ruin the greatness of it. But take it from someone who tends to be a music elitist and turns her nose up at many bands and artists... and is a classical musician herself... if I sat straight up in my seat and wanted to buy their album instantly, they're definitely worth a listen at least.

4 out of 5 stars Plain And Simple: It Rocks........2006-10-27

Bullets And Octane may not be the most original band to come out this decade, but with "In The Mouth Of The Young" (the band's second album), there is a band on display who knows how to rock like the old school. It's rough around the edges, it's abrasive, loud and in your face. Together with Helmet mainman, Paige Hamilton, working as producer, these guys have no doubt delivered the effort to take them to the next level, or at least get a few heads turning.

Sounds Like: A happy medium between Papa Roach and Velvet Revolver.

    The Good:
    - The album breezes by, as each track flows into the next perfectly. It's an easy and fun listen.
    - Hamilton's influence is evident, but luckily he doesn't go for the completely lo-fi sound he gave the latest Helmet CD.
    - The musicianship is something to marvel at, somewhat resembling old-school Guns N' Roses.

    The Bad:
    - The vocals leave a bit to be desired at times. Frontman Gene Louis could use a little more range.

Hits: "Bathroom Floor," "Cancer California" and "Going Blind."

Future: Who knows. I mean, these guys deserve to get noticed, but it seems like any band who tries out a retro sound and does it justice gets ignored in favor of the kind of alternative/indie garbage that's been clogging the music scene for five years strong.

Personally: I'd love for this album to take off. These are the kinds of songs you wouldn't mind hearing on the radio or on TV a million times. There's something here every rock fan can appreciate. Whether you grew up on Motley Crue or Blink 182, you'll dig Bullets And Octane.

Best Listened To When: You're breast-feeding.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is mine now.......2006-09-29

I first heard this band when they performed on the Family Values Tour (with KoRn and Stone sour). I was blown away. I went out the next day and bought this CD. I love it. It is a great piece of rock music that gets usual rotation on my Gigabeat (I'm listening to "I Aint Your Savior" right now actually). My top 5 tracks are:
    1. Mine Now
    2. I Aint Your Savior
    3. Save Me Sorrow
    4. Going Blind
    5. Cancer California
But there are no bad tracks. If I could only suggest 1 CD this year, this would be it (but thankfully I can suggest as many as I want: "Come What(ever) May" - Stone Sour, "One-X" - Three Days Grace, "Phobia" - Breaking Benjamin)hahaha! Bye...

    5 out of 5 stars a dark opus.......2007-04-26

Ever since I picked up a copy of the, then as yet to be release Crow movie soundtrack, and then a copy of the graphic novel, I've considered O'Barr's work a modern masterpiece for the ages. Nevermind all the trashy sequels designed to capitolize on the original soulfulness of the original. Fear and Bullets is a dark opus that takes you to another world, while some of it may be a little too metal/industrial sounding for some, it is none the less the perfect accompaniment to the graphic novel.

No words could explain how I felt the first time I put this cd into my cd player and pushed play. You know that feeling you get when you at peace, that like chill of calm that runs over your body <- That is what I felt.

5 out of 5 stars a "must have" for any fan of the crow.......2000-05-20

I am a big fan of "The Crow" movies and soundtracks. When I saw this CD, I purchased it mainly for the novelty of it. To be honest, this CD took some time for me to warm up to. It does not have the mainstream bands/titles on it that have gotten radio time like on the soundtrack of "The Crow" and "The Crow - Salvation" I'd say this CD comes somewhere between the original "Crow" CD and the instrumental "Crow" soundtrack by Graeme Revell. "Fear and Bullets" has good vocals and good instrumental tracks. Now that I've warmed up to the CD, it's probably one of my personal favorites in my collection. If you enjoyed the dark tones in the other crow soundtrack CDs, you will like this album.

5 out of 5 stars What something to get your adrenalin pumping?.......1999-11-03

I have been waiting 5 years to get my hands on this, and it came in the mail today. Driving home in a storm, stereo cranked, this is worth the wait. I know this isn't the original release, and that there are alot of changes, not having heard the first release(poor college kids can't afford the price they wanted for the limited edition), I don't know what I missed. If your a fan of the Crow, and of hard pushing, turn the stereo up and blow your eardrums out music, then this is the CD for you. I'm not going to list favorite tracks, cause everyones tastes are different, so buy the CD, listen, and pick your own.

Other records from the late, great, and original Lynyrd Skynyrd were more barroom raw (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd), indelibly rocking (Second Helping), and radio-ready (Street Survivors), but none was as endearing and cohesive as Gimme Back My Bullets). The 1975 LP, whose title referred not to ammunition, but to the Billboard term "#1 with a bullet," found the normally three-fisted Florida guitar army one axe short. But it allowed Gary Rossington and Allen Collins to work more intuitively on the songwriting chores with vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, while providing room to groove in the process. The results, though underrated in the band's epic pre-crash catalog, sweep into rock ("Trust," Searching"), blues ("I Got the Same Old Blues"), folk ("Every Mother's Son"), and country ("All I Can Do Is Write About It"). This deluxe edition includes alternate takes and live cuts. It also includes a bonus DVD featuring seven songs from the band's November 1975 performance on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test. The crystal-clear video shows Skynyrd in all their grandeur: raucous and polished, scorching and compassionate. And lights-out loud. --Scott Holter

    5 out of 5 stars Essential 1975 DVD Performance.......2006-04-12

EVERY fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd and rock and roll music in general should immediately run out and buy this album. Not because Bullets is Skynyrd's shining moment; it's not. While this is a very, very good album, it doesn't measure up to the greatness that is Second Helping or even Pronounced and Street Survivors.

What makes this reissue absolutely essential, though, is the inclusion of the "bonus" DVD containing Skynyrd's complete Old Grey Whistle Test performance from 1975. Vintage footage from the glory days of any classic band is so hard to come by, yet here we have, thanks to the BBC, a stunning, full color, uninterrupted, seven song performance from a band at the height of its powers.

It is such a revelatory experience to see Ronnie growling and prowling the stage in his barefeet and cowboy hat. Gary Rossington and Billy Powell show their mastery of thier instruments during their various solo breaks and of course Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle formed Skynyrd's secret weapon rhythm section. All of it is fantastic stuff.

As you watch the DVD, though, keep a special look out for one of the truly great rock and roll guitar heroes, Mr. Allen Collins, at stage left. Allen Collins had style and flash and emotion - just an amazing musician. He was also a great songwriter, having composed the music for Gimme Three Steps, The Needle and the Spoon, That Smell, and Free Bird, amongst others. And of course one of the great moments in rock and roll history is on Free Bird after Ronnie sings those sad, proud lyrics. As Gary and Billy take their solo spots, the musical tension keeps building and building, up and up and up, until finally, finally the tension shatters as Allen Collins takes wing and soars into that classic extended solo.

The performances captured on this Old Grey Whistle Test truly demonstrate the power and the greatness that was Skynyrd at its best. Sadly, three of the guys shown in this performance are dead. Ronnie Van Zant (and Steve Gaines) died in that 1977 plane crash. Leon Wilkeson died of natural causes in 2001. And Allen Collins, who survived that horrific plane crash, tragically became a paraplegic in a car crash in 1986. He never played guitar again. He died of complications from the paralysis in 1990. Allen Collins, R.I.P.

4 out of 5 stars very nice!!, ALL I CAN DO IS WRITE ABOUT IT. .......2006-03-01

while this album was not my favorite it does however have its charm. several songs are standouts and thus should be an album of merit. the album was hurrily recorded while the band was exhausted-it does show because of some limp performances in some songs. to be fair, most if not all artists have a bone buried in their discography and I think this is theirs. this album was also remastered before with 2 bonus tracks in 1999. all contents of that issue are included here. the only differeces are some photos--so, for fans who have to have it all--there is a couple of reasons to keep that reissue. the sound quality to me sounds the same as the prior-the album sounded muddy then and remastering probably has improved it. the latest reissue is a boatful of bounty--disc 1 - original release with 6 bonus track - 4 of which are new. disc 2 is a DVD of a BBC tv show "OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST" recorded in mono. the performance on the show is FANTASTIC and really showed the ORIGINAL band in all of its glory-disc is about 45 mins and makes you want more. I only wish the latest CORPORATE version of the band could implement the passion shown here. superb liner notes*-*same as 1999 version but adds more. while I hate that music and movie companies force us fans/collectors to double or triple dip to "have it all" - there are valid reasons for coughing up money for this. I am surprised that this album was given the LEGACY EDITION treatment but you can bet the original albums will get the same. lets hope they continue to give us quality unreleased gems.

    4 out of 5 stars Smoking Gun.......2006-03-01

1976's Gimme Back My Bullets was the band's fourth album and first with legendary Atlantic producer Tom Dowd. It is an unusual pairing and Mr. Dowd's production isn't suited to the band's stylings. The album is a little more uneven than their previous three releases. That being said, when the band is on, they are smoking. The blistering title track is among the finest songs they recorded. "All I Can Do Is Write About It" is a strong rocker as is the fiery "Double Trouble". "Searching is a fine slow number and their cover of J.J. Cale's "I Got The Same Old Blues" seems like it was written for the band. This deluxe edition is worth the purchase for the additional DVD that contains some great live footage.
