It’s often said that rock critics are frustrated musicians, but it seems the phenomena isn’t restricted to music scribes since Rolling Stone photographer Mark Seliger confessed to Jakob Dylan during a shoot for the august magazine that he wrote and sang alt country tunes during his off hours. The young Dylan offered up his own studio, starting Seliger on a year and a half long process, which ended with the release of Broken Promises, a very credible alt country album that recalls some of the best work of Pure Prairie League and early Poco--but with a darker cast. Seliger recruited a few more of his musical pals, like Gillian Welch, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, and Meshell N' Degeocello to provide musical and moral support, but the disc is much more than the sum of its stellar parts. Seliger shows he has a strong lyrical sense, and can infuse even the most banal aside with a southern gothic twist, his voice; a mournful, fretful presence that conjures up the baleful winds of the West Texas plains where he was born. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Mom's music strikes a chord.......2007-04-22

My Mom who is very eclectic got this at some point. Probably something
I picked up for her birthday one year when getting a case of
cigarettes as requested struck me as "enabling". It's an on-going deep
pain to me. Plus it grates with my severe health battle smokeless in a
life of 2nd hand coughing, while she has only seen a doctor in her
life in the last year or so around the strokes. Excepting a time i
can't put here. Known for having a cigarette every three seconds and
me paying for them for 33 years. Sadly I hate this really. At 83
something is just not right, we own everything a Marlboro coupon book
can get. Three tents. Ponchos. When I'm feeling especially betrayed by
living, or simply beyond heartsick, Mom hauls in her Willie CD's and
blasts me into a position of leaving the house or finding my own inner
balance ...a treatment program of sorts.
That or her Judy Collins, Cat Stevens, Don McLean, Gordon Lightfoot,
Johnny Mathis, Peabo Bryson (who I took her to see a concert do not
ask me about it...ever)

Today I'm listening to Broken Promises. Willie Nelson.

I actually really like Nelson, so don't misconstrue this. If anyone
can't see the years of work making him able to perform with such ease
and grace...it's something to see in concerts... which I've also
gotten to enjoy. He has such a very good sound. It's up at levels
unimaginable right now which the neighbors must appreciate as Mom is
either going deaf or her processing so damaged by the stroke. The two
things coincided, I don't know. Her few visits as possible on her
"plan" doctor wouldn't be able to speak to that preferring to focus on
something showing me the area of the brain stem. Yeah cool picture..I
have to deal with reality here. Anyway if you don't know Willie
Nelson, welcome to the world, I'm available for my opinions on
everything if you need further pointers just email. I, in turn, want
to know about other worlds. So, Nelson is a cultural icon.
Anti-establishment, quintessential American, rugged individualist.
Believes in community, public efforts to do good things. Seems to care
and to act out of that place in his work, and admit how hard it is to
be dealing with a human heart.

Anyway I'll tell you exactly why I like the CD...it's about getting
messed with. It's about how love really works. It's about how really
stupid things can be. It's about disappointment, illusion, games,
deceit, longing, knowing, needs, wants, souls, cheapness, deepness,
fuel, flame and heartache. It doesn't wax too sentimental except I
suppose in the singing. Not really then. It is an album Mom relates to
because of her past and I get..but to Mom it's a great way of
saying..."get real we live in the world no one aspires to grind around
in our reality, get used to it". Kind of a picker upper gal if you
need company....

I like these songs...December Day. I like it because the lyrics remind
me of Try to Remember in the Fantastics. And that show I was once a
part of. I like Broken Promises, I think the tune End of Understanding
as a poem, or song, is a phenomenal piece. I have a copy of it
actually on my daily planner, I like Healing Hands of Time, You
Wouldn't Cross The Street To Say Goodbye and I Don't Feel Anything.
Saying song titles doesn't help a buyer I know but these are the ones
I can think of off the top of my head that I would change a bit and
sing myself. Or play on hammered dulcimer..

I think there are so many of his albums you might want to go over to a
place where you can listen, or listen to bits of this to know if this
is what you want. I'm avoiding going and doing some work and taking a
little moment to review what I hear playing today. I found it
distracting from other thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical, sad, and beautiful.......2006-03-27

Mary McCaslin and her late husband Jim Ringer were staples of the folk circuit in the 1970s, and , according to many music critics, remain vastly underrated. "Broken Promises," released in 1994, was Mary McCaslin's first album in many years. Although the wait was way too long, the end result is well worth it.

McCaslin's work always combined a feel for the open spaces of the West with an intensely personal sensibility. Her voice and her guitar work were unique, influenced by the acoustic folk tradition, but molding it to suit her own purposes. This is still the case in "Broken Promises. " By no means is this a happy album. It chronicles the breakup of McCaslin's marriage to Jim Ringer, and as such is both bittersweet and introspective. These are sad, wistful songs, but they're not bitter. Instead, they reflect the passing of years as a relationship slowly disintegrates and the singer's attempt to get on with life. These songs may reflect McCaslin's own experience, but, like all great songs, they're universal.

It's hard to pick out favorites, since the songs are all so strong. If I had to, I'd probably pick "Ghost Train," for its haunting metaphor , and "The Abyss." McCaslin's version of the Beatles' "Help" is a revelation. One of her strengths has always been her ability to cover other writer's songs and to wring new meaning out of them. But even as I write this review, I'm listening to the CD and different songs catch my attention.
This is one of those rare albums that reveal something new with every listening.

5 out of 5 stars introspective songs.......2005-09-26

I am very fond of this album--it is introspective and sad, it expresses the losses McCaslin has suffered through the last couple of decades. Her voice is a bit more edgy than it was in her first album, but I think that adds to the impact of what she is singing about. It has the same western feel to it that Way Out West, her first album, had--conveying the Southwest and California, the open spaces, the deserts and mountains--but in this one all of those images are inside/interior--it is a very confessional album (whereas Way Out West was comprised of story telling, like traditional folk songs generally are). This is a much more personal collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Older, wiser, sadder and richer.......2002-11-20

I don't want to say Mary's voice is an acquired taste; I liked it when I first heard it 20+ years ago. But it is not "pretty", especially these days when the producer and the engineer determine what female singers sound like (and amazingly, they sound so much alike...imagine that!). But Mary is an authentic folksinger, carrying the earth and the wind and the rain in her voice.

This CD is even more challenging than her others. On first listen I thought "Oh my, she's lost the ability to sing." But more time has made me realize that these are different songs, sung by a woman who's experienced more bitterness and disappointment than she should have. Not angry, not vicious, not bellicose, she just conveys great sadness and the shock of feeling the befuddled loss that so often accompanies middle age.

This is not a quickie to be gulped and consumed, rather, like a fine port that contains great pleasure in the strength and acid and pungency, it is to be sipped and savored. Give her a try. No one sounds more real....and she consistently makes other singers sound like the "pop" they are.

5 out of 5 stars Subtly Addictive and Enduring.......2002-01-19

I wandered into Portland's Music Millenium several years back when Mary was giving a free public performance along with another gifted traditional singer, Skip Gorman. Initially, I was more taken with Skip. I still like his music quite a bit. However, the quality of Mary McCaslin's song writing and her sincere and endearing voice also captured me over time.

She writes quite honestly and effectively about losing those you love the most. And the pain and loneliness that follow. She does it with compassion and feeling--not with great anger or self-indulgent pity.

She's a fine singer and songwriter that deserves far greater recognition. Her songs are extremely honest and revelatory. Listen and see what you think.

    Product Description

CORREATOWN is the first album by Angela Correa to be released on Bed Pan Records, a tiny independent label in San Diego. Initially, the songs were meant to be a humble little demo of one takes- Angela just playing & singing a natural performance. However, after listening to the songs producer Gregory Page decided to paint in a little color between the spaces of music and lyric Angela had created. Most of the songs chosen for the album were actually the first take. The result is a collection of songs that are intimate & sincere, yet loose and organic in texture.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars She paints poetry..........2005-05-19

A perfectly uncluttered collection of pillowy indie-folk that drifts effortlessly from song to song. Each one painted in vivid detail with beautifully rich brush strokes that barely touch the canvas. Poetic and unprecise, Correatown is the place we've always wanted to be.
