The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Coulda, Shoulda Been A Classic.......2005-08-13

One only has to check out the internet and read Nantucket reviews of their original three albums re-released on CD from Wounded Bird Records to see how fanatical their fan base is. And for good reason.
This rockin' North Carolina band made it as far as openers for AC/DC (and covered "It's A Long Way To The Top")and other bigger bands as they toured through the Piedmont and the South. What set Nantucket apart was superb musicianship, streamlined songs that were heavy on the hooks and had plenty of guitar for those afraid to check out anything that didn't rock hard enough, it being the late '70s and the age of disco and wimp music.
Perhaps the key ingredients were principle songwriter Tommy Redd, who could manuever from style to style with the greatest ease and dexterity and the vocals of Larry Uzzel, who possesses one of the great classic rock voices. No doubt the chemistry and feel good tunes of Nantucket on record translated into a dynamo of a live show.
"Your Face Or Mine", the stunning second album, roars in at under 37 minutes and leaves you wanting much much more. "Give Me Your Love", the title track and "Wide Awake" should be regulars on any classic radio format. Fast paced, great arrangements and a sense of fun pervade this CD and reminds us all that rock was supposed to be fun. It's a huge relief from the gloom and doom sludge guitars and industrial noise that seems to drag the listener down into a tar pit. Plus, the band had a distinct style and sound all their own, which is a trait most modern bands are missing altogether.
You owe it to yourself to give this great band a second chance. Get all three CD's while the getting is good.

takes me back.......2005-03-12

this is a masterpiece of its time. So thrilled to now have it again, I must have worn the cassette tape out. This is the perfect road trip, summer album of love and lost love. I am so happy to have it in my cache again.

Excellent Melodic Guitar Rock!.......2004-12-01

Nantucket had it all together here on there second cd. I've been searching for it for years on cd and now Wounded Birds has finally released it. This is great straight ahead guitar driven rock n roll with a great melodic rocking blend of electric guitars,keyboards,and harmonies. Larry Uzzell is also a fine lead singer.Tommy Redd is a great guitar player and song writer. GIMME YOUR LOVE was a small hit in the summer of 1979,but the whole cd rocks from start to finish. The album cover is also pretty cool. You can't go wrong with this one.

I have a hard time picking which is my favorite of the first three albums. The original is well, Just that. Long Way To The Top is a classic album with a great cover song. However, I must say that the tunes and the Album cover of "Your Face or Mine" has to be the pinnacle of Nantucket's collection. I have been searching for these albums for 20 plus years. I lost them all when one of my roomates back in school decided they needed them more than I did. Thank You Wounded Bird Records.. The void in my life has been filled. I think I will have "Born in a Honky Tonk" looped for the next 10 years.

Let's clear this up right off the get go, in my opinion, every Nantucket CD is excellent. "Your Face or Mine" is my favorite though. If I could, it would be 5 1/2 stars. It was the follow up to their debut, and this is no sophmore jinx!

The kick off track and single, "Gimme Your Love" sets the table for an excellent disc all the way through. The next track, "I Live for Your Love" is one of my all time favorite tracks from Nantucket. I can't help but thinking that back in 1979, this could have been a breakthough track for the band on radio. I know in Charlotte, North Carolina, the band received plenty of play on the old WROQ-FM. These tunes were at least as good, if not better in many cases, than what was being played on the radio at that time. Being from North Carolina, the band came through Charlotte often. Opening for AC/DC, Molly Hatchet, or headlining their own shows, many of us identified them as "our band"!

"Wide Awake" is a great combination of rockin' sax from Eddie Blair, and harmony vocals from Larry Uzzell & Tommy Redd. It is a stand out track.

The CD closes out with the Nantucket classic "Is it Wrong to Rock and Roll". By the time this song comes to a cold fade, I think you'll be ready to start the disc over again.

I am definitely partial to the band. They were pretty much the soundtrack to my high school and college years. They definitely have a time stamp on my younger years. You may find you like them too. Many Nantucket fans will probably suggest "Long Way to the Top" as their best work. It may well be the critics choice also. I say buy em all! BUT, if I had to pick one, "Your Face or Mine" is the Nantucket CD for me. Thanks to Wounded Bird for the release on CD!

I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!
