"These stories aren't that far from where I'm now standing," the 46-year-old singer-songwriter reflects in the liner notes to this collection of early outtakes. He's right. Forbert's first four albums established him as much more than a Dylan or Springsteen imitator: His blend of southern romanticism and bittersweet innocence made for an idiosyncratic folk-rock style that he's never really abandoned. These once-shelved tracks, recorded between 1979 and 1981, still sound fresh, and though most of the arrangements feature ace players (notably members of the Skeletons), Forbert's gently wry voice and harmonica are always front and center. Most importantly, the songs have that uniquely Forbertesque spirit. "Get That Vagabond Feeling" is as sweet and evocative as "Romeo's Tune," Forbert's biggest hit, while "House of Cards," with the lines "We're all left with a whole lot of truth," bids an aching, wise farewell to Elvis. Like a scrapbook of Polaroids and poems, Young, Guitar Days offers a touching portrait of the artist as a young dreamer, a worthy collection of images, stories, and melodies in its own right. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars Like a Greatest Hits from a Parallel Universe.......2002-05-01

I just recently bought a greatest hits of Steve Forbert based on the memory of Romeo's Tune, and loved the whole thing. Now I have this album of "outtakes" from his early career, and it's every bit as good! Why these never made it to an album before is a mystery... it has 70 minutes of thoughtful and appealing music.

5 out of 5 stars If these are the outakes.............2001-05-16

I can't think of a single song I'd want replaced on Steve Forbert's brilliant debut album "Alive On Arrival", but I could dang sure plug any number of the songs on this outake collection throughout his next three releases. What an incredible supply of great songs the man must have had stored up in his early days to allow for a release of this magnitude now. The young, precocious Steve Forbert was a virtual font of great sounding, heartfelt tunes about a small town boy in the great big city.Hand picked by Steve himself, this generous 20 song CD deserves the attention of both his recent fans, and of course, all the Forbert die hards to whom he has given so much pleasure over the years. "Planet Earth Song", "Smoky Windows", and "Thirty Thousand Men" are great songs that deserve to stand proudly in the Steve Forbert canon. Do I sound like I like this CD enough? It's great! He's great! And I see there's a live CD on the horizon too. Forbert fans and all who like folk/rock/country blues/singer songwriting etc. etc. ,well, this is the guy, and this is a terrific example of why.

5 out of 5 stars timeless masterpieces.......2001-04-28

This is truly a great collection of songs that have well withstood the test of time (in solitude nonetheless). There are at least a handful of gems on this CD as good as any SF has ever released. If I can guess correctly from the production, some of these so called outtakes are better than some of the songs on the albums they were originally intended for! I would highly recommend this CD for long-time and new fans. These are fully produced songs left off albums and not demos, so the sound quality is superb. It is incredible that these have never been released.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung Hero.......2001-04-01

It amazes me that this excellent CD is made from castoffs from Forbert's earliest work due to "vinyl limitations". I have been listening to this CD in the car almost non-stop for the last two weeks. Young Guitar Days makes other CDs and radio tunes seem banal and uninspired. Unfortunately, if you are like most people, Steve Forbert is the best singer-songwriter you've never heard of. Now isn't that a shame.

5 out of 5 stars I've Been Waiting For This One.......2001-03-31

This cd finally provides us with many of the great Steve Forbert songs that he performs in concert but have never shown up on his lps or cds. While his latest releases have all been excellent, I have waited for the unofficial bootleg release of some of these great songs from the late 70's. Its finally here and the sound quality is great. Great songs and accoustic guitar playing. Highly recommended.

While its predecessor, Young Guitar Days, focused on shockingly strong unreleased compositions, this second installment in Steve Forbert's bootleg series is dominated by alternate arrangements of otherwise available tunes. That's not to say it's not often exquisite. Forbert is right to call the "slow version" here of "Listen to Me" his best take on the song--and the same might be said for the 1979 Nashville recording of "Witch Blues." Previously unknown songs like "Young Guitar Days" and "Everybody Needs a Real Good Friend" show that even minor Forbert lyrics reveal his characteristic wit and charm. With its raw live performances and low-fi cassette sources, this set isn't really aimed at the casual fan, but true believers in Forbert's late-'70s and early-'80s heyday will cherish these modest, often lively tracks. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Keep On Givin' Me More............2002-09-17

I had some doubts when I first looked at the track listings here,I have to admit. Hmmm...alternate takes of unreleased songs? But, no worries Forbert faithful, the man delivers again, and I suggest you get it now.In addition to the different versions of songs that appeared on Young Guitar Days vol.1,you'll enjoy some hot live tracks like the gorgeous Irish ballad "Down By The Sally Gardens" (with lyrics by some guy named Yeats), "Grand Central Station",which is vastly superior to the studio version, and "Romeos Tune" ,which sounds identical to the version on 'King Biscuit Live' (I would have preferred something more obscure, but that's just me nitpicking). But since I'm at it ,let me pick another nit. "The Oil Song" despite it's worthy sentiment begins to wear on a guy after the umpteenth verse.Boy,we're getting close to "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" territory here. Steve does better with postcards than epics apparently. OK, what else? Oh yeah, the last track here features Steve in a studio in Mississippi before he left home. It's called "Comedy Heights".If I asked you what you thought Steve Forbert sounded like in Mississippi in 1976 you might guess: delta bluesman? Nah. New Bob Dylan? Nope. How about Jimmy Rodgers? Forget it. No, Steve Forbert in 1976 in the state of Mississippi sounded like...Billy Joel! It's the height of comedy. Let's just all be thankful that when he decided to take that bus to New York he got off in The Village instead of Long Island. All caveats aside it's another wonderful collection from a neglected artist and I'm gonna go listen to it again right now.

4 out of 5 stars More of the same, but the same is sublime........2002-08-20

This is obviously for the Forbert completist, but if you like Dylan, Nesmith, Wilco, etc., you probably should be a Forbert completist! These are outtakes, live and alternate versions of Steve's acclaimed early work. One track stands out for me right away: "Get That Vagabond Feeling" is sublime lyrically, musically, vocally. It rolls along happily, like a hobo of Kerouac's ilk, living in the eternal moment. The rest supports the contention of many of Steve's fans that he is the most underrated troubadour of our time. Product Description

Accompanied by Hammond B-3 organ and drums, guitarist and composer Sheryl Bailey is working within a format that is well established in jazz tradition. And her compositions, though distinctly modern, are comfortably within the straight-ahead jazz mainstream as well. But her chameleonic ability to shift tone and style is one of the most impressive things about her notice how she moves effortlessly from a clear, rich jazz tone on the swinging post-bop workout "Starbrite" into the slightly raunchier, John Scofield-esque funk of "Ray's Way." Then there's the sweet and gentle solo piece entitled "Arpeggio," which closes the album on a meditative note. Throughout the album, bassist Ian Froman and organist Gary Versace keep Bailey on her toes, pushing her just enough to keep the mood fiery and bright but not so much that they get in her way. The quality of Bailey's compositions is worth pointing out as well; on this album, every one of them is more complex than you'd guess at first listen, and each of them is a gem. Highly recommended.
