Originally released as a double album of UMRK studio recordings in 1984, THEM OR US is now on one CD. One of the more diverse of the later Zappa albums, the set includes everything from a pair of '50s doo-wop homages ("Sharleena" and "The Closer You Are"), to a straight-faced cover of the Allman Brothers' "Whippin' Post," to a backhanded salute to rock's latest trend ("Be In My Video"). Other humorous moments include "Stevie's Spanking," a recounting of guitarist Steve Vai's bedroom adventures; and "In France," where the scatological lyrics are handled by Johnny Guitar Watson.

Some of Zappa's better rock instrumentals are here as well. The title track finds him soloing away with only bass and drums for accompaniment; while "Sinister Footwear II" is an intricate, multi-keyboard arrangement of a section of his ballet of the same name. Less characteristic is "Ya Hozna," which pairs a funky bassline with hypnotic, tape-reverse vocals -- doubtlessly a response to the "backwards masking" flapdoodle of the time.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

    I swear there are times where you feel like your ear is right next to the studio mic on this disc. When Frank sings "The Closer You Are", you feel like droplets of his spittle are hanging on your earlobe. Frank worked hard to get excellent live and studio sound all through his long career and Them Or Us was a generational step up, due in part to equipment upgrades.

    Don't get me wrong - this isn't an audiophile disc full of nothing songs. This is great stuff with little filler. The themes are typical Zappa - sex, lost love (or was it lust?), stupid people, more sex and more stupid people. Usually, when a musician remakes their own tune, I wish they hadn't, but the remake of Sharleena is outstanding. This was an incredible live band - I saw two shows on this tour and both times they nailed Sharleena, The Closer You Are, Be In My Video and all the rest.

    This disc has great flow and excellent musicianship. To be honest, Frogs With Dirty Little Lips is the one tune I don't care for and although I do like Whippin' Post, they could have left it off without causing me to complain. But it was a great part of the live show.

    This is a bunch stuff crammed into an album 1982-84. Released in 1984, Them Or Us, in my opinion is mediocre. "In France" has a much better version on YCDTOSA, Vol.3. I also really don't like "Truck Driver Divorce". "Stevie's Spanking" has a good riff, but it's played without any energy. There's a better version on YCDTOSA, Vol.4. But this album does have some good stuff. "Baby, Take Your Teeth Out" was pretty funny when I first heard it. "Whippin' Post" sounds really rocking, but the way it goes into the guitar solo is pretty lame in my opinion. Zappa's son Dweezil Zappa plays the guitar solo in "Sharleena", a raggae type remake from the Chunga's Revenge (1970) album. Steve Vai also plays guitar. He plays a solo on "Ya Hozna", and "Stevie's Spanking". "Be In My Video" is a really good song though. This album sounds very 80's. It's mediocre, and I don't recommend it for casual fans.

    This release came out in 1984, when not many people were putting out really good material. Here, you have FZ with a full compliment of talent, covering the whole spectrum of what he was doing at the time. A nice touch is the variety of voices used for lead vocals, and they all get showcased in ways that show off their individual styles.
    Contrary to what others have said, I think the "weak point" is "Sharleena," listen to the "Lost Episodes" version to see what I mean. In all it's a tight, powerful treat for any Zappa fan, casual or rabid.

    In 1984, Zappa released this album. Most of it features the 1982 line-up, when most of these songs were written and most likely recorded.

    1. The closer you are- 4/5 stars. This doo-wop track seems like something right out of Cruisin with Rueben and the jets. Although musically not that great it is still pretty catch and was often played on the 1982 tour.

    2. In france- 4/5 stars. In France is a great blues number that refers to the nightmares due to being in France. This is better than the live version on Vol. 3 because of the bizzare vocals by Johnny Watson.

    3. Ya Hozna- 2/5 stars. By far the weakest track on the album, Ya Hozna opens up with a promising heavy metal riff but soon goes into the awful, warbling backwards vocals and it becomes terribly repetitive. Listen to it once just to get an idea.

    4. Sharleena- 4/5 stars- Sharleena starts out with a great reggea riff and soon goes into a blistering guitar solo. Although I prefer the Vol. 3 version, this is excellent and should be on all Zappa compilations.

    5. Sinister footwear 2- 4.5/5 stars- this rock-band version of the instrumental is incredible. I wish that the screaming guitar part would go on forever; it is very powerful. This is one of Frank's complicated masterpieces.

    6. Truck driver divorce- 3.5/5 stars- This song is good but starts off pretty dull. The guitar solo at the end is worth the wait though.

    7. Stevie's spanking- 4/5 stars- the stage vol. 4 version is loads better but this is still very good and has a great riff.

    8. Baby take your teeth out- 3/5 stars- this is apparently the comedy song on the album. It has a hypnotic and joy-ful beat but the vocals and lyrics are obnoxious.

    9. Marqueson's chicken- 4/5 stars- this is another instrumental number like Sinister footwear 2 but it isnt quite as good. It is still good though. Very underated.

    10. The planet of my dreams- 3/5 stars- this and Baby take your teeth out go together well; they are both rather comic. This does however feature Bob Harris, one of my favorite key-board-players and vocalists for Zappa.

    11. Be in my video- 4/5 stars- This is a hilarious number that makes fun of the new wave music that was in the lead at the time. Chad Wackerman shines alot here and that doesnt surprise me. Chad was Zappa's most un-appreciated drummer and I say he is the best Zappa had. This is equal to the stage vol. 1 version.

    12. Them or us- 3.5/5 stars- this instrumental is wildly sporadic and a little hard to follow but Zappa is really jamming away. Just listen too Wackerman's liquid smooth double-bass pedal riffs, something he should have been famous for.

    13. Frogs with dirty little lips- 3/5 stars- this funny little number runs heavy on the bass and is pretty bizzare but it lacks a little in the excitement section.

    14. Whippin' post- this cover of the famous Allman Bros song may be better than the original! Zappa's band really shows they can play all styles of music here. The dvd of Doe shumor belong in music is better but this one still does the trick.

    Well, there you are. Them or us is a vastly underated Zappa album and I find myslef grabbing this cd quite often from my huge Zappa collection to give it another listen.

    "You Are What You Is", "Thing Fish", and "Them or Us" are the only three Zappa albums from the eighties with at least 95% of studio material on them. This one features most variaty of the three. More or less every song is in a genre of its own. There's doo-wop, blues, rock, fusion, pop, reggae, country-spoofs, Broadway-spoofs, and jazz smothered in "Zappa". The sound quality and stereophony is very good - not excellent, though, but the band is. The rhythm section consists of Chad Wackerman (drums throughout), Arthur Barrow and Scott Thunes (equally on bass), Ed Mann (perc), Steve Vai (guit), Tommy Mars (keys), Bobby Martin (keys/voc), and Ray White (guit/voc). Other vocalists include FZ, Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphey Brock, Bob Harris, and Thana Harris. Some guests are Dweezil & Moon Zappa, Patrick O'Hearn, George Duke, Roy Estrada, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, and others...
    Songs like "Truck Driver Divorce", "Marque-Son's Chicken", and the title track feature long FZ guitar solos (with a variaty of cool sounds), and gives the rhythm section a lot of freedom to back them up; the rest of the material is well arranged and pretty strict. I guess this could be a good intoduction to Zappa's music - it shows how capable the composer (and band) was of writing, arranging, and performing alternating material without losing the main thread, and the album features a suitable amount of Zappa humour. While listening to this album, you will be proven that humour does belong in music. "Them or Us" is one of my FZ favorites, and definitely worth its amazon price, don't worry.

        This set contains four records with two abridged live performances. I have as yet only listened to the performance from 1974. This is one of the first pirated records to appear with the Swedish dramatic soprano Berit Lindholm. Let us hope that recordings from the Ring conducted by Sir Colin Davis at Covent Garden will appear soon! Meanwhile this Tristan from Amsterdam 1974 fills the gap with a truly amazing dramatic force. You can feel the amazement and tension among the public, crying out their "bravos" at the end. This is Lindholm's evening and a great one ideed. Totally involved in her part she becomes Isolde and everything catch fire... No Wagnerian or other opera lover can be without these records. The first two CD's concentrates on the part of Isolde (1974).The performance from 1979 (not with Lindholm)concentrates on the tenor, Spas Wenkoff - more comments will follow when I have listened to that. For the moment, the 5 stars are for the 1974 recording.

        An article title about James Bowman said "A singer in high places" - and it's so true.

        James Bowman is a great singer, and one of my favourite performers. One can listen to his CDs over and over again, without tiring.

        He feels at home in both English songs and other languages. This CD is a "summary" of some other collection CDs of him.

        ýIN SHORT: Good buy for lovers of vocal music, or the baroque and classical. If you don't know his singing, you're missing a lot, and this CD is a great start.
