Editorial Reviews
The Fool came to London in the early '60s from Amsterdam as designers, and were asked by NEMS' Brian Epstein to style his clients in the new Psychedelic fashions, everything from the painted guitars and flamboyant clothes sported by Cream on their first US tour to psychedelic cars for the stars and the mural on The Apple Boutique - which also showcased their fashions. Their album sleeves for Jimi Hendrix, the Move and The Incredible String Band among others, remain classics. And, yes, they made an album! Produced by Graham Nash on the cusp of leaving the Hollies (who The Fool also did sleeves for!) and engineered by Hendrix soundmaster Eddie Kramer, the album is a shock! This is a tour de force of Wyrd Folk ala Incredible String Band and strange twisted visions of pop ala God knows who! This glorious package includes the original album (on Apple records) plus the ultra rare 45 mixes all beautifully remastered. Also features a lavishly illustrated booklet alongside in-depth notes by the author of 'Those Were The Days', the definitive book on Apple Records. On top of all that is a contextual essay on the amazing story of the Provos, the Dutch avant-garde group the Fool sprang from. Cherry Red. 2005.

The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

Great follow up to a great album.......2006-10-31
However King for a day... did about as much in terms of progression from Angel dust as they did from The Real Thing. What they created was another journey through different sort of types of song and sounds.
From the more commercial friendly stuff like "Ricochet" and "evidence", there is a lot of stuff which is reasonably accessable (ie not as far out as the Other Mike Patton venture Mr. Bungle) but pretty different right through, they have a wonderful ability on this record to give the sounds - eg the guitar and the voice a lot of chance to shine through. And the voice on this record for me puts Mike Patton as my favorite Vocalist - already on Angel Dust he did some great work but in this one there are a lot of incredible highlights - worth it for his performance alone.
My favorite tracks on it are the rocking "Digging the Grave", "King for a day" with it's great use of the Acoustic Guitar sound which is quite refreshing but the clear highlight (which is probably not for everyone) is the Awesome slower track at the end "Just a man" with a stunning vocal performance from Patton and a sensational build up through the song using a gospel sounding chorus.
It's not a consistent album through but I think that's a lot of it's charm.
My Favorite Album.......2006-05-07

Schizo and Diverse - Another FNM Classic.......2006-04-30
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.......2006-04-01
This album is just one of 4 incredible albums by the band (I don't count the "pre-Patton" album).
One thing to note is that this is post-Jim Martin. I have come to teerms with this, but its hard not thinking about what could have been with Jim. But thats no statement of dissatisfaction with this album. Nothing could keep such an elite remaining group (plus Bungle guitarist) from making a great album. This is some of Patton's best work and one of only 4 undeservingly great FNM albums. There's only one FNM. Can't say that too confidently for most bands these days.
From the first second of the album its abrasive and testing. This album is truly a test in flexibility. It would still be considered original today.
What else.....We're better than the rest of the music world....thats about it.
Not necessarily Mike Patton's greatest work........2006-03-10

"Drive Me Home" so I can listen to this once again!.......2007-07-09
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Foghat's fifth release "Fool For The City" became the largest selling studio record and attracted many first timers for the ride.
The newer fans as expected gravitated immediately toward the two radio songs, the title cut and "Slow Ride." Those that had taken the slow ride with the band previously found equal pleasure throughout the album enjoying "My Babe" (The Righteous Brothers version is considered legendary) and "Terraplane Blues", to name only two.
Starting with the title track (Great choice for the opener), Foghat's sound is in your face. Their signature rock, blues, and boogie have our attention from the opening notes.
As "My Babe" plays you notice the funkier phrasing of the vocals. A terrific cover to an old classic.
"Slow Ride" has become a mainstay of Classic Rock Radio. Lonesome Dave and Rod's guitars are a blowtorch that can't be extinguished. Often overlooked and unfairly so is Nick's Jameson's bass that enhances the firepower. Jameson had a hand in the production and engineering and he picked his spots very well.
"Terraplane Blues" made sure to silence any question if Foghat would abandon the sound of the previous four records. As a master key, this would fit perfectly on any Foghat release.
"Save You Loving (For Me)" could be the most underrated track on the record. It has the mix of the typical strong Foghat song while fitting like a glove after "Terraplane Blues."
"Drive Me Home" has the band click on all cylinders. The vocals are well executed and the piano puts the right seasoning on the song.
"Take It Or Leave It" brings the festivities to an end. The slowest paced tune on the record shows even more of the groups diversity.
If you never experienced a studio Foghat album this is the perfect place to start. For those that have been with the "Rock And Roll Outlaws" doesn't your vinyl copy need replacing?
Enjoy the music and be well,

FOGHAT KICKS FOOL FOR THE CITY INTO HIGH GEAR WITH SLOW RIDE........2007-02-22
FOGHAT will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being the great band that gave us one of the greatest Rock anthems ever recorded. When lead vocalist and guitarist Lonesome Dave Peverett, guitarist Rod "The Bottle" Price, drummer Roger Earl and bassist/keyboard player Nick Jameson joined forces, it must have been destiny because FOGHAT would be the result and this band would go on to kick Rock n' Roll's mighty a*s. When "Slow Ride" came out, Rock n' Roll and the bars all around the world would never be the same again. In my opinion, "FOOL FOR THE CITY" is one of the many great albums that surprised Rock n' Roll and shook it to its very foundations. "Slow Ride" is here in its full length extended version and it truly shows how much balls this Rocker really has.
I highly recommend playing your stereo or your computer at high volumes while listening to this album. I would also like to highly recommend that you listen to the whole album in its entirety from one to seven. In reality, every single Rocker on this album is fantastic. When you listen to this album, you feel that FOGHAT dares to take you on another Rock n' Roll journey into the world of sound. This whole album never lets up and when you listen to the true Rockers such as the blistering "Fool For The City," the breathtaking "My Babe," the forever groundbreaking Rocker "Slow Ride," the soulful "Terraplane Blues," the real heartfelt Rocker "Save Your Loving (For Me)," the a*s kicking Rocker "Drive Me Home" and the beautiful slow mellow "Take It Or eave It," you really feel that you are listening to a very special album. In my opinion, "Slow Ride" is definitely the best Rocker on the whole album and would be the best Rocker on any of the other great albums by anyone.
Overall, this is one hell of an a*s kicking album worth seeking out and checking out.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely stand the test of stand and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, FOGHAT would go on to record many more great albums and give us many more great Rock anthems. With changes in personnel through the years, FOGHAT would keep its legendary status alive and give us many more tours to look forward to. However, an era in FOGHAT would come to an end when Lonesome Dave Peverett would pass away on 7 February 2000 at the age of fifty six. FOGHAT has already accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll history, that their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history is well secured and will never be forgotten. So here's to you late great Lonesome Dave, Rod, Roger and Nick. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. FOGHAT RULES. R.I.P. Lonesome Dave Peverett. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
The Foghat LP that started it all!.......2006-10-26
Plus there are a couple added benefits - Terraplane Blues, Drive Me Home, and Take It Or Leave It. The original Foghat lineup of Lonesome Dave Peverett, Rod 'The Bottle' Price, Tone Stevens, and Roger Earl.
If you're unfamiliar with Foghat, this is probably the album to best introduce you to them. It's got arguably the two biggest hits they've had to date.
Foghat fans, it doesn't get any better than this!

The beginning of a 40-year-love affair with Mendes's sound.......2007-06-10
That said, the release remains one of my favorite of both my childhood and adult years. With two hit covers (the title cut and "Scarborough Fair), along with scorchers like "Laia Ladaia (Reza"and "Upa, Neguinho," the album is just as exciting today as it was four decades ago. Though the latter tracks are sung in Spanish, that fact is not a deterrent to appreciating and enjoying them and others.
However, the best track is the ballad "When Summer Turns to Snow." This is an evocative tune and offers Mendes one of the few times he has taken the lead vocals...and he does a darn good job at it, too!

Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops do the Beatles.......2005-01-01
It was inevitable that with over a hundred albums the Boston Pops would do the Fab Four. They were the first orchestra to perform the songs of the Beatles in 1964 when Fiedler returned from a trip to Liverpool ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" was the first one they ever did). These are not just these songs played by a classical orchestra but rather arrangements done for this purpose. You will notice that one of the standard ways of arranging these songs is to use the chorus as the introduction for the song (e.g., "Eleanor Rigby," "Hey Jude"). If you can guess from the drumming at the beginning of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" or "Yellow Submarine" what those songs are then you are way ahead of me, but that is the sense of fun that Fiedler brought to these songs by giving them the John Phillip Sousa treatment.
Sometimes it is such the simple elegance of doing the guitar parts with strings, as with "And I Love Her," or even the staccato strings of "Penny Lane," that makes the songs enjoyable. Then there are the mood chances invoked by turning "A Little Help From My Friends" into a work of minor chords. My assumption is that if you pick up this album you will know the songs, but not these arrangements, so you should just forget about looking at the play list and just listen to the music.
There are a quartet of bonus tracks on the album, featuring live versions of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "And I Love Her," and "A Hard Day's Night." These are not different versions of these songs, which is too bad because I thought it would be interesting to see if the Pops arrangers could come up with different classical ways of doing the same songs. The final track is actually Fiedler talking about how the Pops came to play the Beatles music, as a "novelty." I have not listened to this sort of music for a while, but it makes for nice background music and there are more albums out there. Remember "Saturday Night Fiedler"?
Some Moments - but doesn't live up to expectations.......2004-09-30
There are several things that disappoint me about this collection. For starters, there is only a total of two songs from the Beatles best three albums: "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" has one song ("With a Little Help From My Friends"), The "White Album" has one song ("Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da"), while there is no songs from "Abbey Road". As mentioned above, I thought the Beatles' later material lent itself well to being played with an orchestra. These albums are really the cornerstone of this period, yet there is two songs between these three albums. I understand that Fiedler's "Play the Beatles" was put together in 1969, but I still expected much more of a presence from these albums. I think many of the tunes on these albums could have lent itself very easily to classical music. For example, songs such as "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", "When I'm Sixty-Four", "Day in the Life", "Come Together", "Golden Slumbers", "Carry That Weight", "Birthday", and "Helter Skelter" would have sounded wonderful being played under the classics. I don't know if the Fiedler and the Boston Pops ever did these songs, but if they did - they should have been included. If they were done, it would be nice to hear them on an updated version of this collection. Some of these tunes are available on other classics collection, but Fiedler's Orchestra was the best at playing this music, so I would have liked to have heard it here.
The other thing that disappoints me are some of the selections themselves. Most of the tunes do keep to the sound you would expect from the Beatles, but some do not sound as good as I would expect. "With a Little Help From My Friends" just doesn't sound much like the original tune. The song that I consider the signature song by the Beatles - "Hey Jude" is an extreme disappointment - it just doesn't capture the magic of the original song. Songs like "Michelle" and "And I Love Her" do keep to the Beatles sound, but they somehow miss the mark. Perhaps these two songs aren't the best songs to be done with a Classical Orchestra.
However, this collection is not all bad. There are some positive points that do shine. There are several songs which surprise me on how well they sounded being played in the classical sense. "Eleanor Rigby" is one of those. You can feel a lot of power and emotion with that song. Another song that surprises me how well it sounds being played as a classical piece is "Penny Lane". Fiedler is also able to demonstrate a lot of power by playing by playing "Penny Lane' as a classical piece. In "Yellow Submarine", Fiedler puts a military and marching band spin on the song. It gives the song a whole new dimension. As for my favorite piece on the collection - it has to be "Fool on the Hill". Somehow I almost like "Fool on the Hill" played as a classical piece better than how the Beatles do it. Other songs that sound good are a couple of the Beatles' earlier tunes - "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "A Hard Day's Night"
It is worth noting that there are some live versions of these songs included with Fiedler's studio recordings. In particular there are live versions of "And I Love Her" and "A Hard Day's Night". There are also multiple versions of the same song included. You will hear three different recordings of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (one from 1964 and two from 1969 - you will hear a change in tempo). There are also two versions of "A Hard Day's Night" (the live 1965 version and a 1969 studio recording). Counting the live and studio versions - there are also two versions of "And I Love Her".
It is also worth noting that on the final song (the third version of "I Want To Hold Your Hand"), there is a spoken introduction by Arthur Fiedler which is about 1 minute long in which Fiedler explains why he started playing Beatles music. The liner notes contain a one panel writeup by Peter Dellheim that discuss a little more background about the success Fiedler has had playing the Beatles.
Overall, this isn't a bad collection. I had higher expectations knowing how good a conductor Arthur Fiedler is as well as knowing how good many of the Beatles' songs would have sounded. This might appeal to the Beatles fan wanting to hear songs Classical, and possibly even vice versa - but if you want to go deeper with the Beatles being played classical, you may have to go elsewhere.

Dottie Conlon
a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27
Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.
Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.
A top cast album.

But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT SONGS, MEDIOCRE SOUND.......2007-03-15
sound of the Collectibles Records "Main Ingredient Golden Classics"
collection. I figured that since this was a Sony/BMG Legacy
2005 release that the remastering would be great. Wrong. It's not
awful, but it's not very good either. Some of the tracks have
a muddy "cassette-like" sound to them. Maybe the original masters
sound that way? In any case, I can't fault Cuba and the guys. This
stuff is prime 70's soul, and even with my complaints I think this
is the best collection of their music out there. "Rolling Down A
Mountainside" is CLASSIC. Sing, guys.....SANG!
GLAD TO HEAR THESE HITS AGAIN.......2007-03-08
