4 out of 5 stars Would you like ketchup with your bug?.......2007-05-05

The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!

Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.

5 out of 5 stars he makes you get up and dance.......2007-04-10

my 3 yr old enjoys this as much as us

5 out of 5 stars Live in Dublin.......2007-02-17

The music is really toe tapping and excellent. Andre Rieu is a master of music.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Dublin.......2006-07-05

This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.

5 out of 5 stars Live audience is great........2006-05-03

This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated and supple hard bop from the summit.......2006-07-23

Kenny Dorham was a musician's musician, the thinking person's trumpet player (though the emotions are personal and deep, even if not instantaneous or obvious). His tone is light but round and always centered, capable of sounding vulnerable and breathy one instant and dynamically brilliant and virtuosic the next. Since Kenny is the least "showy" of trumpet players, my hunch is that this Dorham-led date will not impress the uniniated overly much and that it should probably be purchased after one of his later studio sessions or his dates with Art Blakey ("Live at the Cafe Bohemia") or Horace Silver ("The Jazz Messengers"). Once you've acquired a taste for the Dorham sound--which, incidentally, can be addictive--the pleasures of the present session will be all the more apparent.

Each of the tunes not only features first-rate (if understated) solo work but attention to compositional details that were frequently missing in "hard bop" performances of the era. Listen to the title song--with all of Monk's transitions and intertextual motifs intact--or to "Night in Tunisia," which may be less dramatic and forceful than the version with Clifford Brown and Art Blakey at Birdland but is ten times more musical.

The underrecorded, melodically lithe J. R. Monterose complements K. D. in the frontline as effectively as Hank Mobley, and the overrecorded Kenny Burrell has never sounded more inspired and assured, almost overmatching the more subdued approach of the other players. Bobby Timmons restricts his solo time along with the block chord cliches, turning in some of his most tasteful work on record.

While this may not be "the" Kenny Dorham recording, it belongs in the top 5--which, speaking of the pantheon of all-time trumpet greats, is probably the short list on which Kenny himself deserves mention.

5 out of 5 stars The uncrowned king.......2002-03-20

Kenny Dorham was such a great trumpet player, but even considering the fact, that his recording period spanned about 20 years, starting with important contributions in the forties, when he played with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and others, it quite seems, that he largely was taken for granted by the wider audience, which paid most of the attention to more glamorous players, namely Dizzy and Miles. But listening to Kenny Dorham's Blue Note recordings you will notice, that he had it all: A beautiful, slightly bittersweet sound, really nice, long lines and a great knowledge about chord-progressions. Of course, he also was a great composer. This latest reissue from the RVG-Series offers for the first time the possibility to really listen to all recorded material from that live-date. You will love it, especially if you already own the two Art Blakey CDs "Life at Café Bohemia", which also feature Dorham at his best. About the personnel of this date, I'd like to notice the presence of Kenny Burrell on some of the tunes. He had finished his first own album ("Introducing Kenny Burrell") just the day before and he sure was in a playing mood. the choice of J.R. Montrose is also a very interesting one. this relatively obscure tenorist really has nice ideas and a pleasant, light sound, somehow similar to Stan Getz or Zoot Sims and he really takes care of business. Bobby Timmons on piano already had his block-chord style, which later would become famous when he was part of Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Sam Jones on bass and the to me completely unknown Athur Edgehill on drums contribute everything necessary for a good groove, so let's say, that I really enjoy this music: The tremendous swinging versions of "K.D.'s Blues", "Night in Tunisia", "Who Cares", a very relaxed "My Heart Stood Still" and gorgous ballad interpretations of "Autumn in N.Y." and "Round Midnight". Considering the originals, I think, that "Monaco" is the most interesting one. It's based on an idea, which first appeared on another Dorham original ("Minor's Holiday") from the above mentioned Art Blakey date and Dorham's first Blue-Note Album, the fantastic "Afro Cuban", which I also reviewed. Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!! Classic Jazz.......2002-02-26

I just picked this album up today and I was blown away. First of all, despite being a mono recording, the sound is awesome; clarity and depth are excellent. I have shied away from previous mono recordings, as they tend to get muddied, but this music suffers no such fate. Kenny Dorham sounds as good as I've ever heard him, and Bobby Timmons was just beginning to shine. If you are a fan of classic jazz, this is a must-have for your collection.

Ms. Barber is the beneficary of the return of Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs to the highest-end music recording. And, oh my, did they ever do a superb job! Audiophiles will rejoice at MFSL's superlative sonics. And while this CD is a curious choice for the comeback, it really does work. Probably the dynamic range of this recording had a lot to do with the selection, and surely Ms. Barber delivers a fine performance.

Chances are good you already own this CD. But before you debate shelling out the added do-re-me for the SACD version, please consider:

It's like hearing this CD for the first time. Come to think of it, it's like hearing a CD for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Too Rich For Your Blood.......2006-04-23

In our home town, Patricia Barber is recognized as the ruthlessly in inventive talent that she is. But here, other reviewers seem to ignore her originality in favor of "scathing" assessments of how she uses that originality.

An artist is an artist largely because he or she takes a unique perspective through a disciplined process of invention, often using existing frameworks. This is exactly what Patricia Barber has done for all of us.

In this album, many cuts more than prove out this fantastic originality. But the one that stands out completely is "Too Rich for My Blood," one of her own compositions. It is nothing short of amazing.

They talk a lot about the influence of her lesbianism on her art. I suppose that this is relevant, if not inevitable, discourse. However, once you hear the musicianship of this song, and its complete inventiveness, you won't ever be quite the same again. If you have to be a lesbian to compose and sing this way, I want to be one, too.

5 out of 5 stars Tasteful Diversity.......2006-03-29

This is my first introduction to Ms. Barber. This album is quite diverse in her arrangements. She has outstanding musicians backing her up throughout. If you want the same old jazz don't buy this CD, but if you want tasteful diversity with each track please check this masterpiece out. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Re-invention.......2004-04-23

Like Bird, Miles, Coltrane, Mingus and Monk (to mention a few), some jazzmen simply re-invent and re-direct the art form. (Miles did it multiple times.)
Miss Barber is of that caliber. Her arrangements are scintillating; her voice quality is unique, and the intellectualism and passion she brings to her music are frankly superb. Long may she grace us with her STYLE...

2 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice wasted.......2003-07-24

I found her voice which I had heard on the Lady Sings the Blues compilation to be absolutely wonderful. I found the material and especially the instrumental arrangements to be quite awful. Sometimes droning on in repitive long stretchs that remind one of machine music rather than creative movement where ideas are explored. Often they are in dischordant sounds that seem to seek strangeness rather than musical meaning.
Listen carefully before ordering this if you are not familiar with her material. It goes straight to my "Sell" pile, I'm afraid.

4 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect.......2003-02-11

I like this record a lot. The first time I heard it, I was shopping for new speakers for my stereo. The salesman at a high-end audio store played it for me, saying that it is a staple for demonstrating audio gear. Which is to say, it's really nicely produced and has lots of interesting sounds across the sound spectrum. He went on to say that 90% of the people for whom he plays the record go on to buy it. So that is how I came to acquire it.

Patricia Barber is a gifted songwriter, and the lyrics to her songs are clever, witty, and engaging. So you might be wondering "why only four stars?" The reason I withhold the fifth star is that Ms. Barber goes off on a couple of vocal tangents where she completely loses her way. For example, on the second track "Mourning Grace" she sings off key for nearly an entire minute. Frank Sinatra made an entire career out of singing off key, but I hope Ms. Barber does not continue to follow his lead.

5 out of 5 stars deep to the bone.......2007-01-01

It must have something to do with drugs, alcohol, or very, very poor personal hygiene.

Those are the only three reasons robust enough to explain why Chris Rea is not a household name. He is a simply superb bluesman. THE BLUE CAFE is an album worth selling the coffee table for.

Rea's writing, voice, and guitar are a three-punch knockout. Yet a highlight of BLUE CAFE is the bass of Silvan Marc and the mixing and production that bring out this amazing artist's work without letting it overpower the dozen tracks that make this CD indispensible for the blues connoiseur and highly recommended for followers of serious rock and roll.

Highlights? Oh, where to begin ...

'Square Peg, Round Hole' is the way a record ought to be kicked off. If you've never heard Chris Rea before, you'll be on iTunes or Amazon before this intro track is half over. 'Since I found you' is one of the rare upbeat tunes worth risking a blues album on. Rea almost disqualifies himself from the genre with this tune, but his guitar saves the day and wins him absolution for almost crossing over to happiness.

'Thinking of you' is almost spooky for its sketching out of lonely love sliced off from the loved one by distance.

Then, 'Anyone Quite Like You' with its Rea signature opener:

'Ten thousand princes
I've seen them all
I've seen them come
And I see them fall
I've watched them win
I've watched them lose
Since you've been around
No one gets to choose
Because when the game begins
And the time is now
When there is no more talking
Only here and now
There is only here and now
I ain't seen anything quite like you
Ain't been anyone quite like you'

This is as much enthusiasm - always motivated by a single human being who has won Rea's love - as this artist allows himself. Apart from the personal linkage of lover to lover, Rea wears an anarchic suspicion of the powerful and the polished ('Shadow of the Big Man').

At least in his art, he inhabits a gray land where authenticity is the cardinal virtue and ostentation its opposing sin.

Within that world, Rea's preternaturally expressive voice and his persuasive guitar eloquently narrate what it's like to live with no larger hope.

This is blues. Sad. Occasionally wistful. Music at its most compelling, here East of Eden.

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REA CD.......2003-06-02

I have most of REA's CD's and bought this in germany, because it was on special. I had lost sight of him after the "GREATEST HITS"
collection and I don't think his newer output was released in AUSTRALIA. ( SHAME ) This is a great CD from a true master. Great songs, great guitar playing and not a bad track amongst them. From rock to blues to ballads, this has it all and they are all excellent. I liked it the first time I heard it, now I love it. And it is still getting better. If you like REA or his style of music, you must buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Doen't get any better than this.......2001-08-26

Angel's gal fm Wales was right on with this except I'd give it a 5. This guy is terrific and while some of his prior work is better than others this demonstrates he still has it after 21+ years. If a fan you will be able to play it over and over and never tire of it. Go Chris

4 out of 5 stars Rea really good.......2000-10-12

From the opening track Square Peg Round Hole, there is a scent in the air that Chris Rea still knows how to punch out a great tune. With his trademark gravelly vocals and superb slide guitar, you know that Rea can always deliver. With songs such as On The Beach and Let's Dance, Chris Rea found success, using simple melodies and riffs to create wonderful music. The Blue Cafe is no different - from the slide guitar on As Long As I Have Your Love to the upbeat rhythm of the title track, Chris Rea still performs excellently. Highlights of the album include the riffy Square Peg, the Bond-esque strings of Shadows Of The Big Man and even the solo of Thinking Of You will make the most earnest toe tap. It is true that this album, whilst being musically terrific, also has something for everyone, so it would be hard not to like this if you aren't a fan already!! Definite entertainment.

Although the great drummer Art Blakey took full control of the Messengers soon after, this 1955 live date features the original lineup, the one co-led by pianist Horace Silver. Filled out by trumpeter Kenny Dorham, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and bassist Doug Watkins, the original Messengers recorded just one studio record (billed as Horace Silver & the Jazz Messengers), which quickly became the standard to beat in hard bop. Volume 1 of the Bohemia records shows them to be a versatile bunch capable of lightning-quick bop workouts, tender ballads, and deep, bluesy grooves. Dorham's trumpet work is especially vibrant; Silver's piano is an unmatched combination of funk and fire, and he also offers some marvelously clever accompaniment. Blakey, of course, steers from behind the skins. After Blakey and Silver split, both led bands that were at the pinnacle of hard bop, so imagine how potent they were when they played together. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the great live recordings in jazz.......2006-08-10

I cannot say enough good things about this record. I really like the atmosphere. I like the way Blakery announces the tunes. it kind of makes you feel that you are there. This issue adds two or three songs per volume in what is a two volume series.

All of the musicians play great. The quality of the sound is excellent. My favorite songs are Prince Albert and Soft Winds.

Hank Mobley and Kenny Dorham both play wonderfully. It is one of my favorite Mobley records. The rhythm section is as good as it gets. Horace Silver is fun and funky. Blakey out does himself.

5 out of 5 stars Blakey's Best.......2006-06-06

A good move, because like Art Blakey's two-set "Live at Birdland," Vol. 1 definitely has an edge over Vol. 2--both in programming and performance. And as indispensable as the earlier Birdland recording is because of the presence of Clifford Brown, "At the Cafe Bohemia, Vol. 1" will get more playing from me, if for no other than two reasons: Hank Mobley and Doug Watkins. But then there's K. D., who in his own way satisfies every bit as much as Clifford.

Introduced as a "new, rising tenor star" by Blakey, Hank is at his inventive, unforced best, that smoky, butterscotch sound coming through without the spiked, overly "hot" miking and mixing it receives on the later "At the Jazz Corner of the World." Watkins is superior to his predecessor, Curly Russell, as well as his successor, Jymmie Merritt. He receives a rare solo feature, "What's New," but his real strength is his tone (smaller but richer and more focused than Paul Chambers' during this period) and time (an absolutely unflappable walker with unflagging concentration).

Kenny Dorham is the thinking man's trumpet player, never wasting breath or technique merely to impress, yet capable of being as lyrical and fluid as his frontline partner, Mobley. He belongs on a short list with Clifford and Diz and maybe no one else. The logic, the harmonic adventurousness, the allusiveness, the "curing" of each individual note, the elimination of anything extraneous to the pure substance of musical form itself--he's simply in a category unto himself. Silver's comping is, as usual, perfectly in synch with Blakey's drums, and his soloing is more connected here than on other live sessions.

Finally, the program is representative of what an effective jazz set should be--an engaging blues, followed by an "I Got Rhythm" set of changes, followed by "All the Things You Are" changes. Blakey, as usual, cuts the ballad feature, "Alone Together," far too short, but Tad Dameron's "Lady Bird" and Mobley's "Deciphering the Message" are huge bonuses--bebop that's accessible and winsome. The sound on this monaural disk from 1956 is Van Gelder at his very best (contrary to some assumptions, "RVG" is no guarantee of perfection).

In sum, of the nearly 50 Messengers albums in my collection, this is my favorite, most-played, on-location recording, rivaled only by Art's "The Jazz Messengers" (not the popular Blue Note "Moanin'" date but the Columbia studio session, an album that, along with magnificent Mobley, features inspired Donald Byrd and quintessential ensemble cohesiveness).

4 out of 5 stars Good "live" early Blakey.......2005-03-20

Here's the first of 2 volumes on Blue Note capturing the Jazz Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia on Nov. 23, 1955. Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, and Doug Watkins join Blakey for the club date. "Prince Albert" is a handsome little tune by trumpeter Dorham, and "Alone together" features tenor saxophonist Mobley in a beautiful ballad performance. "What's new" features Watkins on bass and might be of limited appeal. Volume 1 is slightly better than Volume 2, but you shouldn't have one without the other--and both are very good.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Jazz Messengers Cooking Session!.......2003-09-05

"Now, ladies and gentleman, I'd like to acquaint you with the Jazz Messengers. On the piano, we have the incomparable Horace Silver. On the bass, all the way from Motor City, ladies and gentleman, one of the youngest and finest bass players in the business today, our bassist, Doug Watkins. And on the tenor saxophone we have a new star on the modern jazz horizon, Hank Mobley. And on the trumpet we have a perennial favorite, he's with the prophet of modern jazz Charlie Parker. He's our arranger, now, and out trumpeter. The uncrowned king, ladies and gentleman, Kenny Dorham."

With those words, Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers begin a two disc jazz classic.

Recorded live at the Cafe Bohemia on November 23, 1955

Art Blakey - Drums
Kenny Dorham - Trumpet
Hank Mobley - Tenor Saxophone
Horace Silver - Piano
Doug Watkins - Bass

Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars At the Five Spot.......2005-04-22

Burrell (g) Tina Brooks (ts) Bobby Timmons or Roland Hanna (p) Ben Tucker (b) Art Blakey (d) 8/25/59.

This is a great live set with a lot of the tracks lengthy enough to give everybody a decent taste. There is so little of Tina Brooks available (he died young) that anything (4 tracks here) is welcome. Burrell loved the blues, but only 3 tunes are blues; one, BIRK'S WORKS, is a 10-minute workout on the form and very good. SWINGIN' is a nice original by Clifford Brown, where Blakey is front-and-center. Hanna is best on the blues waltz BEEF STEW BLUES. One of Kenny Burrell's best albums. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A very good Jam Session.......2001-12-04

It's always a pleasure to get some of the typical live atmosphere of a club date into your home, so I advice you to listen, close your eyes and you find yourself at "Five Spot", because this album really keeps that "groovy joint sound" The personnel, including Bobby Timmons, Art Blakey and the wonderful Tina Brooks on tenorsax is not a working group, but a happy meeting of some great cats having a ball playing together. The first tune, "Birks Works" will immediatly catch you: Bobby Timmons'funky intro (on a slightly ill-tuned piano) sets the pace for a typical "Messengers'Groove" and after the theme, things start off with a most relaxed, well constructed solo by the leader and typical soulful messages from Tina Brooks and Bobby Timmons. "Lady be Good", the second tune (I'd say it's "Rifftide", because that's the line they are using, based on the chord changes of "Lady Be Good") is pure bop with some really great tenor by Brooks, and Timmons shows his Bud Powell influence. The second half of the album (minus Brooks and with Roland Hanna replacing Timmons) is not so exiting, but I like the lyrical Ballad "If You Could See Me Now".

4 out of 5 stars great music that rivals Blue Lights.......2000-03-20

I strongly disagree with Mr. Berndt that this live 1959 session is an average album, because it is in a totally different style. If one is only familiar with the guitarist thru the low down, greasy, after hours style of "Midnight Blue" then it is not hard to see why "At the Five Spot" would be dissapointing. Kenny Burrell can play it all whether it be ballads, gutbucket soul- jazz with either Jimmy Smith or Stanley Turrentine, or blistering hard bop. This record is proof of the latter that rivals KB's previous Blue Note affair "Blue Lights". While Burrell is on fire, it features some very strong performances from the underappreciated tenor sax genius Tina Brooks, especially his fine solo on "Swingin'". Bobby Timmons gives his all on the 4 cuts he's featured, and his solo on "Birk's Works" is one of the most exciting of his that I've heard. Sir Roland Hanna the other pianist on this date alternating with Soulful Mr. Timmons, offers interesting contrast to Timmons sanctified musings with his fast fluid lines, and percussive attack, highlighted well on "Hallelujah". Art Blakey on drums(as he was on Blue Lights as well) plays wonderfully offering a great solo with mallets on skins also on "Hallelujah". A very worthwhile album, which I heard is about to go out of print, get while you can. Coincedentally this was recorded 2 years to the day after Kenny appeared on Jimmy Smith's classic "Houseparty" which featured him doing some spirited wailing on "Cherokee".

3 out of 5 stars surprising!.......2000-02-25

After buying and listening to Burrell's really outstanding record "Blue Midnight" I expected much more. But exept "SWINGING" it is an average album. I would not miss it...

5 out of 5 stars Inexhaustible, unrepeatable, untouchable........2006-10-28

I never realized it at the time, but the Blakey "At the Cafe Bohemia" sessions have proven to be one of those life-long companionships that simply never grow old. They become a part of you, playing themselves out in your memory every day but constantly challenging you to return to them for a reality check. Are they really that good?

Possibly even better. The albums I once thought I preferred--the "Moanin'" album, the Blakeys with Clifford or Lee Morgan at Birdland, the original Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers session--all sit proudly on my shelf, seminal sides that are practically iconic in their representation of a whole era and style of jazz. But they don't get played much.

The Bohemia sessions, on the other hand, remain eternally hip because they never try to be. The genial hosting of Blakey ("Take your shoes off, folks, and make yourself comfortable. We're about to have a little cookin' session for Blue Note"); the ceaselessly fertile melodic imagination of Mobley, immediately responsive to each of Blakey's rhythmic cues and set-ups; the unadorned sound and pure substance of Kenny Dorham's trumpet with its disdain for anything played for flash or show (Blakey even bringing down his dynamics to accommodate his "uncrowned trumpet king") ; the superior strengths of Silver as a "side man" rather than an overly directive composer-leader forcing the groove; the time and sound of Watkins' bass, so integral with the ensemble as to be no more noticeable yet no less critical than your own heartbeat--it all adds up to a moment in time I'd even trade for the one I spent in Birdland one night when Coltrane was playing opposite the quartet of Terry Gibbs and Alice McCleod. Even the prospect of catching Bird or Lady Day live doesn't excite me as much as the opportunity to hear Hank Mobley playing alongside Kenny Dorham or Miles Davis. (Actually, I once did catch Hank live, but it was far too late.)

If this one goes out of print, we're in deep trouble.

4 out of 5 stars The REST of the Bohemia date.......2005-03-20

This is Volume 2 of the Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia on Nov. 23, 1955. It's just a tad below Volume 1 in quality, but there are plenty of things here to admire and enjoy. "Hank's symphony" is an up-tempo swinger written by Mobley, and "Sportin' crowd" is another Mobley tune, a blues that really cooks. "I waited for you" drags just a bit, but this is an important Blakey CD set (Volume 1 & 2) in the Messengers discography.

5 out of 5 stars The Live Recordings That Started "The Blue Note Sound".......2005-03-04

It is my firm belief that Volumes 1 & 2 of The Jazz Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia are the genesis of what we know today as "the Blue Note Sound." While earlier albums, including Art's "A Night at Birdland" and "Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers" hinted at great things to come, these recordings just bring it all together for me. The hard bop is at a fever pitch, the songwriting is beginning to take on a more original and creative direction, and the lineup is killer -- Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley and Doug Watkins join Blakey and Silver. These are all trademarks of the great things we have come to expect from Blue Note. On Volume 2, standards "Like Someone in Love" and "Yesterdays" have fresh life breathed into them, while Mobley's "Avila and Tequila" adds the latin twist we'll hear later on "A Night in Tunisia." Finally, "I Waited for You" must be one of the best ballads of the mid-50s. Coupled with Volume 1 this is essential music.

4 out of 5 stars They were so hip, you know, they were super-hip!.......2001-12-26

Those were Horace Silver's words describing the horn section of the 1st edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Kenny Dorham and Hank Mobley weren't the flashiest players, and they were overlooked in the era of Miles and Clifford and Sonny and Trane. But they were also gifted improvisers and composers, as the Bohemia recordings clearly show. Kenny was more boppish than Miles but definitely a middle-register trumpeter; while Hank had a mellow, soulful sound perfect for hard bop. Add the tireless drums of Blakey and the blues-drenched piano of Horace Silver, and you've got a winning combo. This is the same lineup that recorded the classic album Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers about a year earlier; but there aren't any Silver compositions on either volume of the Bohemia recordings.

Volume 2 focuses primarily on Hank Mobley's contributions. "Sportin' Crowd" (a.k.a. "Tenor Madness" of Rollins-Coltrane fame) swings hard, while "Avila & Tequila" is an intense Afro-Latin romp that ranks among his best compositions. As far as standards go, "Like Someone in Love" has that great groovy feel that Blakey and his bands perfected. If you like this CD, get Volume 1 as well as Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers (also on Blue Note).
