Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.Customer Reviews:

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

Long-awaited follow-up to "Dark Eyes".......2003-01-04
The absolute hardest thing about performing these songs is not to make them sound sappy, vulgar, or over-done. Of all Russian singers who dealt with this material, I most often think of bass Boris Shtokolov, who sang them with utmost care. Dmitri does just that here. His care for the texts is what strikes me first while listening to "I Met You", a reflective serenade to love long lost. While all songs are spectacularly presented, I would like to mention "Misty Morning" and "I loved you". Like the title song, they are both filled with gentle melancholy, and sang with great tenderness and feeling. Some high-energy items, such as "Troika" seem just a little out of place, but the voice is a sheer pleasure to listen to. In "Oh, Could I in Song Tell My Sorrow", there's a strange change from traditional "your heart would break" to "my heart would break". I am not sure as to why this was done, particularly since the Cyrillic texts are absent.
In liner notes, Hvorostovsky explains the dedication of this album to his father, a chemical engineer, who managed to convey his love for the classical music and Russian romances to his son. I think all fathers need to learn from this man. Wondrous results stem from right upbringing!
The only minor quibble I have is the cover picture. It seems like the producers wanted to target exclusively the female part of the audience by using lots of shades of red color and lots of subdued candlelight. Well, I am sure there are lots of Dmitri's fans among men, particularly those of us who study voice, so I wish Delos would not make the cover so extravagant.
The engineering of this album, though, is very appropriate. The voice is placed well above orchestra (conducted with perfection by Constantine Orbelian) and each word is clearly heard. Together with Verdi Arias recording this shows that Delos engineers are fully capable of capturing the voice of this size and beauty well on record, something I doubted when listening to an otherwise lovely album of Neapolitan Songs.
I am sure non-Russian speakers will enjoy this CD just as much as Russians. After all, we all feel the same, and Dmitri's exceptional talent just makes it easier to communicate across cultural barriers.
ANOTHER WONDERFUL ALBUM FROM DMITRI.......2002-10-11
This album is for the "romantic at heart". The songs are beautiful as is the singing. All I can say of this endeavor is Bravo!!
I'm truly grateful that Hvorostovky's recording career was extended by the Delos lable!!
Dmitri at his best.......2002-10-09
The 19 songs on the CD are described as "Old Russian Romances", or in professional music terminology as "Russian Domestic (Household) Romances". These are passionate songs of love, "often against the background of vast, empty Russian landscapes with long roads under foggy, gray skies", as the liner notes tell us. Hvorostovsky's dark, expressive baritone is ideally suited to such music, and Dmitri aficionados will no doubt recognise two songs from his earlier CDs of this genre, the haunting title track and the wistful "O, If Only I Could Express In Sounds". The latter was featured on his best-selling 1991 "Russian Romances" CD for Philips, but here - if anything - his singing is even more poetic than in earlier days. Comparing the two versions, one is immediately aware of how much freer Hvorostovsky's top notes are on the latest CD, with his upper register showing none of the slightly constricted quality that occasionally marred the earlier CD. This is the voice of a mature artist, and it is rare indeed to hear such committed singing from the soul.
As if the above wasn't enough, the CD comes with translations, generous liner notes, and an alluring cover photo of the handsome Siberian.
Hvorostovsky in his Milieu.......2002-08-31
mezzo-voce notes, held endlessly, and trailing off to nothingness. The songs themselves are lovely-sad ballads of lost love for the most part, with a few catchy little ditties thrown in for a change of pace.
As crossover discs go, this one is one of the best. A fabulous singer at his prime, singing the songs of his childhood memories.
Bravo Hvorostovsky!

Unforgettable.......2004-12-10
Get these albums if you can. Proof that the 70's weren't all bad taste and flares! The music is timeless and even now if marketed properly would do well on general sale... It's REAL music, played and produced well, by people who knew what they were doing, and, of course, Surkamp's utterly, utterly unique voice. Only Geddy Lee of Rush comes anywhere close but it's not really a fair comparison.
There are two other albums that I know of plus a bootleg of a live radio show, but these are of the 'for-fans-only' type.
Uncommon recording but great music.......2004-11-19
Like another reviewer I favour "Pampered Menial" over "At The Sound Of The Bell" because the former rocks out a lot more and has more variation in sound. That doesn't mean that the latter is a failure, it is still a really good album just not as heavy as "Pampered Menial"
I'll never forget the first time I heard Pavlov's Dog. It was "Julia" off "Pampered Menial" and I thought it was just about the greatest thing I had heard in ages. The vocals of David Surkamp are a take it or leave it thing, much the same as an early Geddy Lee. However, musically this band is phenomenal. Just layer upon layer of a myraid of instruments and sound. "Julia" is a great keyboard introduced ballad but it gets going pretty well. If you want to here great prog rock then get this for "Song Dance" on "Pampered Menial"
The slower stuff on "At The Sound Of The Bell" like "Mersey" and "Valkerie" are also worth the price of that one alone.
Excellent 70's music and I got all my mates into buying these after they heard them. Give them a go as they are worthy additions to any collection of those who are into 70's rock.
A Unique Sound.......2002-11-05
Pavlov's Dog was a quirky and unique sounding band, and not only because of David Surkamp's vocals, which one critic described as sounding like a choirboy on speed. Granted, Surkamp's falsetto can be offputting to many listeners, but if one can get past that (or come to like it, like I do) and listen to the music, one is rewarded with a melange of rock, country, and folk influenced sounds that was all their own. This is Mid-western/Mississippi Valley music with a sometimes eerie-sounding twist, given extra oomph on "Pampered Menial" by the fiddle playing (the musician's name unfortunately escapes me at the moment). The songs range from love ballads ("Julia")to rave-ups ("Song Dance) to the folky/pop weirdness of "Natchez Trace".
"At the Sound of the Bell" unfortunately suffers from less inspired song writing and less varied tempos, most of the songs being slow and mid-tempo tunes. Surkamp reins himself in a bit here, compared to the first album. Unfortunately, the band's fiddle player quit between albums and is sorely missed here. Nonetheless, this set is well-worth buying if you want to hear one of the more unique sounds of the early/mid-'70s.
Little known but outstanding........2001-02-12
This is a very tight, talented band. A tight rhythm section of Rick Stockton (bass) and Mike Safron (percussion) provides a rock solid base for the variety of sounds created by the keyboards, violins, flutes and other instruments featured on these two recordings.
"Episode" off of "Pampered Menial" ranks as my favorite, but there are so many stellar songs on both these CD's that if you enjoyed acts such as Jethro Tull, or Yes...then you can't go wrong here.
Do yourself a favor and take Pavlov's Dog home soon!
