Bill Hicks was crass, obstreperous, and undeniably offensive. He was also one of the funniest comedians ever, in the malicious tradition of George Carlin and Lenny Bruce, hiding social commentary in the bluster of standup. Rant in E-Minor is probably the best introduction to his work, containing his opinions on such tame subjects as abortion, gays in the military, and Rush Limbaugh. Agree with him or not--and you'd be hard put to find anyone who agrees with everything Hicks had to say--it's devilishly clever stuff; even the dated material is still funny and fresh. Hicks was a twisted genius of the highest order, and he's sorely missed. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mindblowing, to say the least.......2007-06-10

It's hard to hate Bill's material, unless, of course, you're a conservative religious freak from the southern States. But for everyone else, this album is a delightful little piece of dementia and philosophy. Over the course of 75 unrelenting minutes, Bill attacks the following things (in chronological order):

- Billy Ray Cyrus
- Human beings
- Pro life organizations
- Non smokers
- The women in his audience
- Patriotism
- Politics
- Jay Leno
- Rush Limbaugh
- Catholicism
- Christianity's "believe or burn" philosophy
- The concept of believing in the sanctity of life for children only, instead of people in general
- People who believe their children are special

Bill also calls for the legalization of marijuana as a solution to ending the American deficit, jokes about starring in commercials to make money, reveals his obsession with COPS, plays a few songs for his mama, and yes, in case you're getting impatient, he makes a few d*ck jokes.

While I doubt there is anyone who agrees with everything Bill ever said, many of the material on here is hard to argue with, if you're a liberal thinker like most great comedians are. Conservatives will likely be disgusted and turn off the album before writing a bad review of it. And Ann Coulter blames liberals for only reading the most offensive parts of her column...

But I digress.

It's a shame that Bill's dead, but his albums and concert films are still around. If you were to only listen to one of Bill's albums, make it this one. Your eyes will be opened.

3 out of 5 stars Hype not lived up to.......2007-01-10

This guy gets a lot of hype on the comedy circuts. Some of his stuff is very very funny and on the mark. Other stuff is just way out there weird. This album kind of feels like it was pasted together out of spare parts and is not one performance which I prefer.

5 out of 5 stars Original Comedy 10+ years old that still hit the topics of today.......2006-07-01

This is the true Bill Hicks expierence. His comedy is not jokes, but facts and opinions stated in hilarious ways. He is a revolutionist and this album is his top work.

5 out of 5 stars Sad That He's Had No Worthy Successors.......2006-03-17

Where are his successors? Now it's all sex and race and how many obscenities you can fit into a set. Standup is in a decadent phase it seems to me. It's all about the comic's personal life, his/her neuroses and observations about those neuroses, but no politics, no social commentary. Oh well, let's hope Hicks gets listened to by a new wave of young comedians.

Where is he when we need him? Bill? Bill? Bill?

5 out of 5 stars stand up, yes...comedy, uh..........2006-02-26

Bill Hicks wasn't a stand up comedian because he never told any jokes. None of his material had punchlines, or even moments where you suddenly realise he's been spinning a yarn or making a convoluted observation just so he can get to the point where he'll give it an unexpected twist to jerk a reaction out of the audience. All he does is just stands there and tells the truth. And the truth is so wrong, and disgusting, that you just feel inwardly grateful that someone, somewhere realised it as well, and managed to make it funnier than it probably deserved to be.

Musicians have been fusing traditional Celtic music with rock & roll since the '60s, but few have done it as successfully as the Canadian band Great Big Sea. Rant and Roar is the band's sixth CD, and it's designed to introduce them to U.S. audiences by presenting the best songs from two of their earlier releases, Up and Play. Unlike most Celtic-rock fusion bands, Great Big Sea eschew electric guitars and synthesizers in favor of acoustic guitars and traditional instruments like bodhran, bouzouki, fiddle, flute, and whistle. But on tracks like "The Old Black Rum," a rousing drinking song in the Dubliners tradition; the moving ballad "General Taylor"; or their cover of R.E.M.'s "End of the World," their instrumental prowess and powerful vocals more than make up for the lack of electric instruments. Not only have Great Big Sea scored hits with previously archaic song forms like sea shanties, drinking tunes, and ballads, they make these old songs rock. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars Just the tip of the iceberg but a good place to start..........2006-05-20

If you really want to know what these guys are all about...see them live when they come to your area...this is a compilation for the US of their second & third Canadian releases, and is just a taste of what they do. Road Rage, their live CD...or the Great Big DVD & CD is an even better representation of these fun loving Newfoundlanders. I've been to four of their live shows in the Burlington VT area since 2002 and I'm ready to see them again when they come to Lebanon NH in the fall of '06. Live in concert is the way to truly experience these guys. They love what they do and it shows. If you can't get to one of their shows, at the very least, get this and then the live albums, and by all means, keep going till you have them all (there are eight). Alan Doyle, their lead singer, puts it this way: "We're not a band you come to see or hear. Great Big Sea is something you do." Audience participation only gets them going even more, and it's impossible not to get caught up into it. Whoever said they were "annoying and cloying after a few listens" needs to learn how to cut loose and have a great time. These guys are the real deal!

5 out of 5 stars "Got The Sun And The Sky, All The Water Surrounds Me!".......2006-03-15

Come in, take off your hat and coat and grab a seat near the fire. Order a pint of 'screech' and relax, the music is about to begin. Welcome to Newfoundland!

'Rant And Roar' is a fun, rollicking CD by the Great Big Sea, four native Newfoundlanders who draw their inspiration and music from a unique and rich cultural heritage. English, Irish, Scottish, French and who knows what else come together with a flair that reminds us all of what the "Old World" was like in simplier times.

Though I'm not a native Newfoundlander I have spent numerous summer's there visiting the maternal side of my family. In my youth I've walked up and down Saint John's fishing docks listening to my Grandfather barter in Portugese with fisherman for the best price on the catch of the day and watched the icebergs float by while standing atop Cabot's Tower on the hillside overlooking Saint John's Harbor. All the pleasant memories of the time I've spent there is embodied in this wonderful music. Come with me to other time, another place and sing the type of songs your Grandparents sang. Songs of love, songs of life, songs for drinking and a dirge or two thrown in for good measure. Just be sure to bring your stomping shoes if you got any!

My Highest Recomendation!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2005-10-11

If you like traditional Irish music that has grown with the times, this is for you. The album moves along at a great pace and there is just enough of Irish tradition to make you feel right at home. Don't try to drive while listening and singing along unless you have your cruise control set!

4 out of 5 stars a fun time with irish type music.......2005-10-07

I am a clogging teacher and bought this CD because I wanted the music to "Jolly Beggarman" which is the hidden track (#14) on the CD. There are other songs I have enjoyed also on the CD such as "Merri-Mac". Fun to listen and dance to.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Celtic-rock CD.......2005-08-24

This CD is a very nice mix of pop-rock and Celtic music. The upbeat songs are handled so well you can't help but sing along. The musicianship and arrangements are both excellent. GBS's version of "Mari-Mac" is the best I've heard anyone do and they handle REM's "End of the World as We Know It" very well. I've always liked "The Night Pat Murphy Died" and they do a good rousing version here. The only songs that get to me are the two ballads, both of which are a little too sappy for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars Low Expectations.......2006-02-21

I was browsing through the "used" bins at my local "record" store and stumbled upon this album. I hadn't bothered to follow what Ian Hunter has been up to for years, but thought I'd give this 2001 release a shot. What a surprise to find out that Ian can still write a catchy song, without being conventional about it. Like other reviewers, "Dead Man Walking" is the best cut on the disc, but ALL the other songs aren't that far behind. It's good to hear a high quality album from an artist who never got his due after "Mott the Hoople". If you've ever loved the music of the group or the man, buy this recording. Ian Hunter deserves your patronage and you deserve a wonderful dose of "good ole rock and roll".

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked.......2006-02-04

If you don't want a CD that you'll be singing a different song from in your head each morning, than don't buy this one. I put this CD in my single CD car radio and it stayed there for almost a month before I took it out. I still have to hear at least one track from it every morning first thing on my way to work. It's like a good luck charm. Of course once again one of the greatest songwriters of our generation is overlooked by radio and critics, but sometimes it's o.k. because it's kind of a cult secret to the fans who love him. Buy it, listen to it several times, and you'll want to buy them all. Mellencamps guitarist Andy York seems so much more comfortable with Ian. They're a great match, Johnny

4 out of 5 stars Very Polished.......2005-03-18

IH obviously put a lot of time into this project and it really shows. His band sound very tight. I've heard several fans describe Ian Hunter as "Still vital" and I agree. "Wash us Away" stood out as the best track, and "Death of a Nation" is very clever. The tracks have a very personal feel to them, like IH is sharing something important (a quality sorely lacking in many bands). Good Rock and Roll, and something more too.

5 out of 5 stars Dead Man Walking.......2004-06-04

I'm giving this album five stars because of a song called "Dead Man Walking". I think it's the most powerful and personal song he's ever written. It's also really beautiful. I also like Morons which is a funny scathing social commentary with a theatrical flourish that Ian does so well. He writes this stuff better than most of the hacks on Broadway.Wash Us Away is a touching reflection on the sixties..I think(it's catchy anyway, with great lyrics). Death of a Nation is a powerful and touching take on Britain's entering the EU. American Spy seems like a half baked version of Once Bitten, but Soap and Water is starting to spend more time in my cd player. It's a very strong album. That's pretty much the story in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars No Rant, Just Rock.......2003-10-09

My first listen to this CD was on a long road trip. As with most current releases by 70's rock icons, I wasn't expecting too much. The first cut, "Still Love Rock And Roll", seemed a tad formulaic, a bit too reminiscent of "All The Way From Memphis" or "Once Bitten, Twice Shy".
But by the time I'd listened to Cuts 4 & 5, the snotty "Morons" and the funked-up "Purgatory", I knew I was listening to something special.
While I was quite content at that point, the CD just kept getting better, and the last four cuts are as good as anything Hunter/Hoople have ever done. Even better. A truly extraordinary album and a very pleasant surprise. Buy it.

Destined by sheer size to hold up a whole orchestra, the double bass is rarely encountered in solo or chamber music. But on this record, Jeremy McCoy, Assistant Principal bassist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, proves that this mighty monster will let a great player perform fascinating technical feats and elicit sounds of astonishing beauty and variety. Collaborating with equally brilliant partners, he displays his instrument's infinite resources, as well as his own stunning virtuosity and stylistic versatility; the program--partly original, partly transcribed--ranges from Baroque, real and faux, to the present. Two charming Italian "Duettos" sound like parodies of grand opera: Bottesini's, himself a great bassist, for two basses, and Rossini's, for cello and, incredibly, a three-stringed bass. Both include singing slow movements, bouncy finales and dazzling pyrotechnics. Jazz bassist and composer John Patitucci contributes two pieces: one rhythmically spicy, one lyrical. A Telemann Canonic Sonata, familiar on flutes or violins, growls on bassoon and bass; Martin Dalby's Scottish-influenced "Rant" features sound effects for flute and bass. Duets by Gliére and Elgar, with viola and trombone respectively, are lovely. In Jean Francaix's brilliant "Duo Baroque," the bass and harp make fun of themselves and each other, but the joke goes on too long. This record will leave you smiling with admiration and delight. --Edith Eisler

Album Description

Jeremy McCoy's new album, "Dialogues with Double Bass" presents a wide-ranging look at the double bass repertoire. The album highlights two particular themes. The primary notion is highlighting the bass as an equal voice in instrumental duos that are diverse and interesting conversations. A second theme is found in the vocal quality of much of the music. Like Bottesini, one of history's most famous bass players, who earned his living playing in an opera orchestra, Jeremy McCoy is a seasoned member of New York City's Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (the orchestra's assistant principal bassist). The influence of great singing can be heard in McCoy's playing, in the way he shapes a phrase and in the varied tonal colors of his sound. McCoy's wide experience as a soloist, chamber player and orchestral musician, and the expressive range of his instrument, finds him right at home in this engaging collection of eloquent dialogues with the double bass.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Dialogues.......2007-01-08

I enjoyed listening to "Dialogues with Double Bass" from beginning to end. I would recommend this excellent disk without any reservations!

The range of instrumental colors makes this a varied and interesting listening experience. This recording captures the fine details of the instruments without losing any warmth.

Communication between the players is excellent. McCoy's bass playing is superb, with great feel and great timing.

I have heard other fine recordings of the Rossini, but this one is my favorite. Kudos to Jeremy McCoy for showing the potential of the double bass in duet settings!

3 out of 5 stars Dialogues With Double Bass.......2007-01-03

I bought this CD primarily for the recording of Elgar's Duet for Double bass and trombone. It contains a very wide variety of music, all of it good: however, because of the variety it is not often I feel like sitting down and listening to it in one sitting. It is more of a "dip into" CD.

Overall, tho, a very fine CD which shows off some of the textures available to the double bass.

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy McCoy: Dialogues With Double Bass .......2006-10-25

This is a CD of duets with double bass in a classical music format. It is so refreshing that it does not sound confining like classical music can at times. I put it right up there with Yo-Yo Ma's Bach: The Cello Suites Inspired by Bach! Recording of instruments is clean, dynamic, yet highs and low in volumes are not so great that you are turning the volume up and down all the time. Five star on mi iPod!

3 out of 5 stars Will there never be any stay cats ?.......2007-03-17

The c.d. is allright for Stray Cats fans. Don't forget we probably won't see any band like this for a while.

    5 out of 5 stars Rebels Rule!.......2004-06-07

I'm a big Stray Cats' fan and this is my favourite album. Every song is good. "Rebels Rule" is Bo Diddley kinda thing, "Something's Wrong With My Radio" is the fastest song, "Look at That Cadillac" is featuring groovy sax from Mel Collins, "(She's) Sexy + 17" is the hottest song "I Won't Stand in Your Way" is a beautiful ballad featuring 14 Karat Soul on background vocals and "How Long You Wanna Live, Anyway?" is teenage angst ridden song.
The coolest Stray Cats album ever!

    5 out of 5 stars CENSORED LYRIC.......2003-06-03

This is without a doubt, ONE classic STRAY CATS recording. "I WON'T STAND IN YOUR WAY" is the greatest tune Brian Setzer has ever recorded.

But this is a first for me: THERE IS A CENSORED BLEEP OF ONE LYRIC IN THE OPENING TRACK, "REBELS RULE". I have never purchased a censored CD, or Vinyl Album for that matter, in over 30 years of collecting music. This is an IMPORT by Arista. Do they censor lyrics in Britain? I did not know. I know this band was popular in England before they made it in America. Their first 2 vinyl releases were British Imports which I still own. And they're available on IMPORT CD here at Amazon. Although I'm having trouble obtaining GONNA BALL. But this recording, RANT AND RAVE WITH THE STRAY CATS, was one of their first domestic releases back in 1983. Why was it not domestically rereleased on CD? Probably too obscure.

BUYER BEWARE!!! I still had to have this as it doesn't seem to be available anywhere else but on IMPORT. Most of the great tunes from this are on THE STRAY CATS GREATEST HITS, except for "LOOK AT THAT CADILLAC". I'm a purist, and I had to have the original recording. Maybe it will become a collectors items. Who knows? WEIRD!!

    5 out of 5 stars Geniusness!.......2000-07-11

Well, being 15, a typical kid would like, alternative, punk, hip hop, but somethin' about this band caught my eye. Maybe the upright bass, or the way Jim played standing up, or the way Setzer could sing & play that guitar. On this cd, you'll find humor, rebellion, & heartache. Some great guitar skills, great singing, & great writing! The band is tight & the songs are top notch! After hearing this band, alternative, punk, etc, are totally out of the question. It's tuff, sweet, & stylistic! Enjoy! Yee-haw!

5 out of 5 stars the best !.......2006-07-16

As I'm mostly drawn to Celtic music with singing (Karen Matheson, etc.), I was surprised to find how fully satisfying this recording is - there is dancing and singing, and even flying in it!

The finest instrumental Celtic I've heard so far.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible as always.......2000-11-16

While I am sad that 1/3 of Helicon (Chris Norman, a flutist) is not on this CD, I am ecstatic that Bullock and Kolodner, the other 2/3, are expanding their roots. I was first introduced to Laura Risk at Helicon's annual Winter Solstice Concert in Baltimore a few years ago, and there was something very unique about her. Her playing wasn't fancy, it was just pure and from the heart. I am glad to see that Risk, Bullock, and Kolodner decided to release this magnificent album of mostly Irish music. Having not listened to this album for a while (I had begun to listen fiddlers like Natalie MacMaster, Ray Ellis etc.), I was amazed to hear the same Irish fiddle tunes arranged for a trio. It gives the music a whole different spin that is truly unique to Greenfire. For example, "The Cape Breton Fiddlers Welcome to Shetland," "Dinky's," and "Jackson's" are very popular fiddle tunes normally heard in Celidh-like settings, but here take on a whole different meaning without losing their raw energy. Although this is a celtic string ensemble, it is nothing like a chamber orchestra where things tend to drag some. This is 3 professional musicians who specialize in international music, and keep the tunes as pure as possible. "Sean Ryan's," and "Chief O'Neill's Favourite" are also popular tunes that the seasoned celtic listener will recognize. All in all, this is a magnificent recording, and I encourage you to not only buy this CD, but Bullock's and Kolodner's solo efforts as well. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars three great musicians...one great disc.......2000-11-11

This is a first rate recording by an excellent collection of musicians. The tunes vary greatly: from the rollicking sound of the set of reels and rants on the first track to the hauntingly spare and introspective "The Rolling Wave." Robin Bullock, Ken Kolodner and Laura Risk are each excellent musicians in their own right. Together on this recording they are magically enchanting. Mrs. Risk is one of the greatest fiddle players I've ever had the privilege of hearing. Her disc with Jacqueline Schwab (Celtic Dialogue) is a favorite of mine. This disc is just as impressive and fun to listen to. The track titled "First Light in the Mountains/The Open Road" is by itself more than worth the price of this disc. By the way...I also want to recommend Ken Kolodner's wonderful album "Walking Stones"--it is great too. This disc gets a high recommendation from me. I hope that you'll get a copy if you have the chance. There's plenty of great music here.

While at first wary of an all-string recording, I was quickly put at ease. The skill of the players and the mix of the instruments (guitar, cittern, piano, dulcimer, fiddle, and viola) makes listening to this recording rewarding. Many of Greenfire's tunes, particularly "The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Welcome to Shetland" and "Over the Moor to Maggie" are on my "Fiddle Tunes to Learn" list. Get this!

If you need to transform a negative mood into a joyful frolic, enjoy this jovial anthology of top tunes from the 17th century . These exquisitely executed pieces magically transport you to a 300-year old musical event, with an irresistible and beguiling puckishness. The real sensation is soprano Custer LaRue-- quel nom!--who appeallingly dissolves the borders between classical, folk and pop through her heartfelt phrasing and everywoman tone. With musical aplomb, a well-focused sound and teasing vibrato, she charmingly communicates comprehensibly and directly the stories of another universe. This thoroughly enjoyable musical experience is a must have for all types of music lovers. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Fun, frolicsome and utterly delightful!.......2002-11-29

The six member Baltimore Consort combines voice, wooden flute, recorder, bagpipes, rebec, lute, viols, cittern and Baroque guitar into a "broken consort" (a group of instruments that are not all the same kind)(obviously) to whip up spirited improvisations of popular Renaissance ballads and dances from England. A "Playford tune" is one that was published by John Playford in 1651 in his musical anthology, "The English Dancing Master". What is particularly wonderful to those familiar with English Country Dancing is to hear soprano Custer La Rue sing some of the ballads related to favorite dance tunes. Especially fun are "The French Report", "The Joviall Broome Man", "The Famous Ratketcher", and "The Beautiful Shepherdess of Arcadia". If you like these ballads, you may also enjoy the Baltimore Consort's "The Art of the Bawdy Song", with guest singers the Merry Companions, as well as the Toronto Consort's album "Mariners and Milkmaids: Ballads and Dances from 17th-Century England".

5 out of 5 stars Hurrah for CLR.......2002-06-10

    a trip to Killburn

I am crazy about Custer LaRue, and the Baltimore Consort. I am not crazy about jazz. If I wanted to hear jazz, I would buy a jazz CD. Reasonable? I have never particularly desired to hear what a cittern or lute sound like in a jam session. In track 9, unfortunately the title song, I can do without the jamming.

But don't let that stop you from enjoying this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars playful.......2000-06-14

This collection features some of the most playful songs that the Baltimore Consort have ever recorded. These tunes, published by John Playford in 1651, are like a greatest hits collection from 17th century England. All of these tunes are entertaining. Some of my favorites are: Beggar Boy, A Scots Rant, and The Famous Ratcatcher-featuring typically brilliant singing by Custer LaRue (she is the queen of this kind of music). This is another great album by the Baltimore Consort. Buy it.
