5 out of 5 stars Horizontal Gravity.......2007-04-11

What a beautiful, heartfelt and rich series of songs. Looking for something Cracker-esque? Look elsewhere. This is a series of wonderfully drawn vignettes wound wonderfully together with sweet melodies that will work their way under your skin after just a few short listens. "Little Tom" is the best song Paul Simon never wrote. "Southern Cal" is an anthem for the ages and "Lucky" has the power to change your day, on the spot. "Friends" rings in a bit of the classic "Mr. Wrong" feeling from Cracker's first disc (though a mellower mode), "Beauregarde's Retreat" invokes that loose, sing-a-long chorus where you just want to pass the whiskey bottle around the campfire one more time. "Wake up darlin', can't you see? The meteor is dancin' just for you." Yes, Johnny puts the stinging guitar solos and guitar hero poses on hold (for the most part) for "Palmhenge" and delivers one from the heart. Cracker fans will know he's had it in him all along -- the ability to write from personal experience and insight ("Lonesome Johnny Blues"). But spin the disc a few times and you'll be wondering why Johnny isn't up there as a kind of user-friendly James McMurty, a touch-of-country John Doe, or the standard by which all the others are compared.

5 out of 5 stars John Hickman~~GREAT songwriter/ A must have!!!.......2006-12-28

I agree with all the others and especially Anne from Cambridge...Johnny has a definite knack for songwriting.
His voice is a haunting reminder of what good music really is. Many of todays artists do not elicit that. That word elicit; means to draw out the truth and he has shown how well he can~~solo. Aside from working with Cracker and D.L.-this is HIS opportunity to spread his wings and fill a desperate need for some damned good music.
"San Bernardino Boy" and "Lucky" are just some of my favorites from this album. His bluesy, country, earthy quality are in full capacity here. Good music is a hard thing to find these days. Hats off to you John Hickman--you have arrived. You need to realize you have many fans aside from Cracker...Shine on J.Hickman, shine on.

3 out of 5 stars More guitar please!.......2006-12-06

Apparently following the lead of the great Mark Knopfler, the great Johnny Hickman inexplicably decides to hide his guitar under a bushel basket and present a set of pretty good songs that could have been oh so much more interesting with a bit more guitar work and fewer sophomoric lyrics such as holier-than-thou whining about "another corporate nightmare" or "the trust fund bourgeois" or "leaders drunk with greed" or other such nonsense that no doubt sounds cool in high school civics class but comes off more than a bit pretentious here, serving only to stamp these songs with an early expiration date. He's right about being "lucky for my fingers" - so put down the pen and pick up that guitar, dammit!

5 out of 5 stars Best record of the year.......2005-10-20

After several months of listening, this disc is still in my CD player. This isn't just for Cracker fans (this disc is better than the past couple of Cracker records), this is for fans of good rock music. Everyone I have invited to listen to this record has loved it - from pre-teen to middle age. Catchy hooks, witty/intelligent lyrics, and infused with different, but subtle, musical genres. Other singer/songwriter/musicians only dream about creating a record this good. I am on a mission to spread the word of Johnny Hickman.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2005-06-04

An excellent album that is for more than just the dedicated Cracker fans who've known all along that Johnny Hickman harboured such a wonderful talent for songcraft. How would I describe it to someone who hasn't heard it? ....a little bit Bob Dylan, a dose of Bruce Springsteen, with Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard thrown in, maybe even a pinch of the balladeering of Paul Simon a la "Duncan" and a whole lot of the Johnny we know from Cracker especially a lot of the vibe and craft from "The Golden Age" and "Forever". It is a MUST HAVE for all Cracker fans, and for anyone interested in the singer/songwriter/americana/alt-country/intelligent-adult-rock genres. Buy it and you will love it.
