spanish language music for gringos.......2006-08-30

I like the Iguanas. What others complain about them I actually like...they change direction with each new album. They can rock, jam, big band, folk and sing ethnic music.

I have never liked spanish language music. Nothing against the language but I always thought it took away from the ROCK. This cd changed my opinion.

Essentially, the Iguanas are a New Orleans roots band that blends different styles. They are good musicians but they show restraint and rarely jam out on the songs (live they do extend themselves more).

I feel that this is their most folksy work that embraces their spanish influences. My favorite song... "Oye Isabel" of course!

This band should come out with a compilation cd

This CD is great and is by far the best that the Iguanas have ever done. For some reason they didn't stick with this sound. I agree with the above review that this one never grows old. If you liked this, try "Pepe and the Bottle Blondes." They are less of a rock group than the Iguanas and have more of a big band sound, but they do some of the same songs and are a lot of fun.

Grew into a favorite.......2003-04-28

We purchased this at an Iguanas concert many years ago, and while we liked it a lot at first, it has grown and grown on us, to the point that it stays in the car player and cycles over and over. It's fun, catchy and at times poignant. The bass player -- Rene Coman, I believe -- is superb, and the dual saxes make for a wonderfully distinct sound. I love the heavy use of accordian on this CD and was disappointed to read that they moved away from it in the new album.

An essential for all "Salsa Dura" afficionados........2005-08-05

Originally released in 1970, this classic album contained the ever-popular hits "Huracan", "Total Para Nada" and "Ven Rumbero". Other noteworthy tracks include "Pan De Negro", "Yo Soy Abacua" and the hilarious but groovy "Por El Ojo". Frankie Hernandez' lithe and fluid yet powerful and haunting vocals and improvisations are a perfect match for the musicians' fiery and inspired playing. A "Salsa Dura" essential.

You will listen to it initially and say "OK... Not bad". But in within weeks of periodic listening you will be telling all of your friends to get it. It is a wonderful album!

Pianist Ray and Salsero Cruz are well recorded here as they show you they still know how to Mambo. Salsa too! And a bit of their Sacremental Christian music but quite beautifull.
