ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
Wendy Case is blessed with a gravelly, in-your-face voice of the sort we last heard emanating from Janis Joplin

Product Description
No doubt about it, life is hard. Fortunately, some things are better when they’re hard. For Detroit rock ‘n’ roll outfit, The Paybacks, it’s best when its "Harder and Harder." It’s with that philosophy that Detroit’s defenders of the rock return with "Harder and Harder," their second album for Get Hip Records. Brimming with the pummeling riff rock, buoyant, revealing pop and three chord punk pounders that defined the band on its much-heralded Get Hip debut, "Knock Loud," "Harder and Harder" is testament that cutting your own path through the mediocrity of fad, fashion, creeping hipsterism and music industry brainwashing is its own reward.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Best Of.......2007-03-13

I'm not a huge fan of Fatboy Slim but this CD is great. Most of the songs you can hear all the time and there were a few I have not heard of at all. While most of these pay on commericals or in movies (mainstream) its good background music for parties.

5 out of 5 stars Who IS Fatboy Slim?.......2007-01-12

Well, I had NO IDEA who he was. Until I listened to this CD and recognized almost EVERY SINGLE ONE of the songs on it! These songs have been in TV commercials, movies, etc. We bought one for my brother in law for Christmas. EXCELLENT CD!!!! If you want to get a Fatboy Slim CD, this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-11-29

This is what happens when you compile the best songs of one of the best DJs ever. If you're a big fan, there's not much new here, and those who collect many CDs probably have most if not all of these tracks already. But if you're a big fan, as I am, having the collection "under one roof" is worth the additional cost.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2006-09-29

I've been a casual fan of Fatboy Slim for years, but have never delved into their entire body of work. However, since I picked up this CD, I've become addicted. Why Try Harder is a great into to Fatboy Slim. Give it a try, and I'm sure you'll love it too. BTW - the new track "That Old Pair of Jeans" is the best FBS track yet.

5 out of 5 stars Why look harder?.......2006-09-14

If you want to hear, enjoy, and show off to others the genius that is Fatboy Slim, here you go.

As Matthew Blissmer said in his review, this is a GREAT CD to put on for friends that don't want to hear the (often excessively) long versions of each of the songs. I always ran into that problem... I loved the songs but they had awkward lead-in and lead-outs. In "Why Try Harder?", ALL the songs are beautifully edited, starting and stopping at exactly perfect times for the full effect of the song. No minute-long lead-out for "Going Out of My Head", and "Brimful of Asha" (one of my favorites) is cut perfectly down to size from the 7:30 full cut.

I can put this in a CD player and hit Shuffle and not be nervous about hitting an embarrassing song. They're all great.

If you're new to Fatboy Slim, or you've been following him for years, it doesn't matter, this is your CD. Clean up all those illegally-downloaded albums and mixes you were too hesitant to purchase, because this has it all in one neatly packaged, easily-purchasable CD! Time to pay your respects to the totally awesome Norman Cook in this totally awesome collection. Why look harder?

Jamaican filmmaker Perry Henzell made reggae an integral player in his gritty 1973 saga of a renegade Kingston singer who becomes a modern Robin Hood, casting one of the style's earliest stars, Jimmy Cliff, in the lead, and filling this soundtrack--here presented in a remastered version--with classics from Toots & the Maytals ("Pressure Drop," "Sweet and Dandy"), Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town"), the Melodians ("Rivers of Babylon"), and the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad"). Cliff himself gets pole position, however, getting in the first ("You Can Get It If You Really Want") and last ("The Harder They Come") words in this first-rate reggae primer, which also features Cliff's enduring "Many Rivers to Cross." --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reggae.......2007-06-02

If you like reggae, you should have this CD. If you could only own 5 reggae CDs of all that is out there, this deserves to be one of those 5. I never tire of listening to these tracks after all these years. The other reviewers have ably described this music. I heartily agree. 5 more stars for The Harder They Come.

5 out of 5 stars remastered excellence.......2007-04-04

didn't think it could be done. this is great. this does jimmy cliff proud.

5 out of 5 stars The best from Jamaica...and Alabama.......2007-03-17

Still the best classic reggae collection, although as one other reviewer noted, some tracks do sound "Americanized." No surprise. "Many Rivers to Cross" and "Sitting in Limbo" were recorded with the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section in Alabama. This wasn't documented at the time (I learned it when I interviewed the MSRS in 1979) because apparently Cliff did not have the proper immigration papers to "work" in the USA when Chris Blackwell decided to bring him up for the quick sessions.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite albums of all-time........2007-02-13

this album holds its own against the very greatest albums of any genre. even if you are not a fan of reggae, i can't imagine you not loving this cd. there is so much joy, energy, passion and soul bursting from this music that it uplifts me each time i hear it, still fresh sounding to the ears 22 years after first finding it. jimmy cliff's vocals, in particular, are amazing. the songs which he performs on this album, "you can get it if you really want," "many rivers to cross," "the harder they come," and "sitting in limbo," are amongst the finest in the whole canon of reggae. each tune included here is a gem. don't let life go by without having this music in it.

3 out of 5 stars Not as reggae as I wanted.......2007-01-16

I am a bit disappointed in the CD. It doesn't seem to be REAL reggae as I think of it. It seems more like Americanized reggae. Maybe I just need to get a Marley CD. 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' sounds like a song from Sesame Street.

Full Title - Underachievers Please Try Harder. Camera Obscura create lilting, sophisticated melodies that draw similarities to the work of contemporaries such as Belle & Sebastian, The Clientele or Trembling Blue Stars, but are also rooted in more classic sounds such as Nick Drake, Donovan or Petula Clark. Songs drift and linger like clouds in a summer sky, with gentle hooks and breezy vocals that stick in your head like a pleasant memory. Features 14 tracks including an Mpeg video of 'Teenager'. Digipak. Merge. 2004.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A completely enchanting, delightful album.......2006-09-15

Anyone hearing Camera Obscura for the first time will instantly be reminded of Belle and Sebastian, especially if they are aware that both bands hail from Glasgow. There is no question that Belle and Sebastian is the major influence on the band; even if they have other influences--and one can hear many in their music--this one predominates. It isn't just that Camera Obscura's singer (and a very sweet singer she is) Tracyanne Campbell sounds a lot like Belle and Sebastian's Isobel Campbell (apparently no relation--but, then, isn't "Campbell" in Scotland like "Smith" in the US?). The arrangements and feel and touch of the band sound terribly like B & S. That one city could turn out two such exquisite indie pop bands is pretty remarkable, even if the one sounds a lot like the other.

But though Camera Obscura reminds one of Belle and Sebastian, the resemblence never, ever gets in the way of the music. Both bands generate a feeling of joy and delight when I listen to them.

The only complaint I have with UNDERACHIEVERS PLEASE TRY HARDER is that they have packed their very best songs at the beginning of the album. My two favorite songs on the disc are the fine "Suspended from Class" and the even finer (and very, very Belle and Sebastianesque) "Keep It Clean." My next favorite song, however, might be "A Sister's Social Agony." Mind you, the rest of the album never truly disappoints, but it seems a bit of a downer to kick things off with such great songs and then never quite get back up to that level. Of course, this might just be me. Another fan might enjoy later cuts more. But I'm in love with "Keep It Clean." It currently is in my Top 25 Most Played list on my iPod. I love everything about the song, its casual, melodic guitar work, the delicate electric piano, and most of all Tracyanne Campbell's relaxed, almost flippant singing. I delight in the way she is so patient with the words that she sometimes seems to finish a line merely as an afterthought. It is one of those songs that I sometimes will play if I'm having a tough day. It never failed to lighten my mood and make me just a little bit happier than I was.

One thing that excites me about Camera Obscura is that they apparently are improving with each album. I very much enjoyed their first album, BIGGEST, BLUEST HI-FI, but this album was a definite improvement over that. And their most recent album, LET'S GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY (the best song off that one, the stunning "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken," has achieved some success as a single), is even better. It was better, in fact, than Belle and Sebastian's own 2006 release, THE LIFE PURSUIT. So who knows, perhaps the best is yet to come.

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2006-07-04

They are totally unknown here. I only got to know this group on the net and i have found gem in Camera Obscura, with such sweet melodies, angelic voice of Traceyann Campbell and the rest of the band is awesome as well! Im hooked with Suspended from Class, Keep it Clean, Number One Son & Teenager.

5 out of 5 stars Cute 50's-60's stylings. Melodic -- Wonderful........2006-06-12

Seems like many people are mad that this isn't Bell & Sebastian. Well, It's not. It's probably closer to the stylings of The Clientelle or late era Yo La Tengo -- and they're not Scottish...?
Anyway, there are few, if any, synths -- the warm recording and instrumentation are all they need to make their music work. The girl/boy vocals are each unlike anything sung in at least 20 years and together just make me want to melt.
Also, fans of Saturday Looks Good to Me will enjoy, but I must warn you -- this album never really rocks out. It keeps a cool melodic additude throughout. Lunar Sea is bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Whoever wrote the frist review cannot have been listening to the same album .......2006-02-24

Dont listen to the first review, this record is ace. The vocals are very beautiful and genuine. Overall, this record has an intimate bewitching beauty that drags you in with each listen.

4 out of 5 stars get this album. you will find yourself chained to it........2005-10-05

i've been listening to this for three days now, with very little in between. see, normally, i listen to various music which would fall under the categories indie and emo, but not just to be emo. before i found this i was on an at the drive-in binge mixed in with some drive like jehu, sparta, million dead, fugazi and cursive. i saw this album on some emo girl's xanga, and though i usually don't trust emo girl's music taste, i liked the cover, and figured i'd get it and see how i liked it. i have no idea what anybody means by folk pop, because this doesn't seem related to the folk im familiar with, except that it's pretty much oblivious to subject matter. but anyway...this album is really great...production, tracyanne's voice, the beats and selection of instruments. my only complaint is the guy's singing. it's not unbearable but close. especially on the song "your picture". i have to skip over that now, it's like they give him the least rhythmic songs to sing on too. the two bonus tracks aren't really very necessary either. this album isn't emo - i didn't even have to say that - but it is something people could appreciate for...the same reason. make sense? best songs are "suspended from class", "teenager", "number one son" and "lunar sea". light one up and put this cd on, it'll feel good.

5 out of 5 stars Carrying on the legacy of Robert Nesta.......2006-04-13

I am not going to say this album is as good as Bob, but it is powerfully good none the less. Closest thing I have heard to capturing that Wailer sound. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in listening to classic reggae and wants to to stay away from the dance hall stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Back To The Roots.......2004-02-14

Culture's lead singer, Joseph Hill is an unassuming, humble and friendly man, who is small in stature. Those who meet him are often unprepared for his tranformation onstage, when he sings with Culture. Somehow, Hill is tranformed into a towering giant, a lion, and avenger for the power of Rastafari when he picks up the microphone to sing. This kind of charisma that of a man who has rasta in his heart. To his credit, Joseph Hill has maintained a steady course, and both his Rastafarian philosophy and the music of Culture has remained with the roots of reggae music, despite over thirty years of strange mutations in Jamaican reggae music. "Harder Than the Rest" is exactly what the title purports it to be.... the hardest and most straight ahead collection of roots reggae when conscious music ruled, and Rastafari was the source of all reggae. Perhaps roots consciousness has fallen from fashion, but jah people will never forget how important Culture was and still is. I love Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" and "Baldhead Bridge" but this CD is truly harder than the rest and proves that reggae music neither began or ended with Bob Marley.

The is the best reggae album ever. "be careful of the things you do..."

Oh Behold! the greatest ever!

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2001-04-02

I don't own this album (yet), but whenever I hear it it makes me want to rush out and buy it, only I can't find it anywhere. It's so beautiful all the way through, but "play skillfully" almost brings a tear to my eye. It's lyrical content, melody and harmonies are out-of-this-world. Buy this now.

4 out of 5 stars solid.......2000-12-23

I like this record. Positive vibes, never that cheesy sound. Good, smooth, slightly wah wah rhythms, with 3 part harmonies that remind me a little of the Abyssinians. This album is full of slow, catchy hooks. Listen to the samples - nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Rockin 70's unknowns.......2007-06-02

This is a fairly unknown 70's hard rock band. Their biggest ablum was nature of the beast, but in my opinion this is a better album. It is faster and more upbeat where NOTB was heavier and darker.

Their best work was "Live at the El Macombo" where they opened up for the stones, sadly that album seems to be unavailable.

If you like this genre and are looking for more off the wall bands in the same vein try Fastway as well.

5 out of 5 stars April Wine's best.......2007-04-28

If you are a fan of rock, Canadian rock or April Wine, Harder Faster is their best work. It was their first album with the three guitar attack and their first album that received decent airplay in the States. Nature of the Beast, AW's next album was commercially more successful, but it was musically not as good. AW was on top of their game with this album. Their sound was raw, not polished like their next records and it was great rock & roll. The three guitars gave them their own unique sound and allowed interplay between them that was unlike anybody else. Everyone should have a little AW in their collection and this is the album to have. AW was not as good before or after Harder Faster. Enjoy!

Their best!!

That's the only way to describe it. It was just one record before the Nature Of The Beast release that brought them world wide recognition, however Harder Faster was the one that really got the ball rolling as it is indeed a very good release from a very good band.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but not twice as good as the original.......2006-10-04

It has been well documentated that the originial soundtrack is one of the greatest and most influencual reggae albums of all time. An amazing mix that was put together is a weekend. When the deluxe version came out I was extremely excited that one of the great albums of all time had doubled in size. While the second CD is very good I realize now that my expectations were a little high. If you do not own the original, get this album. If you own the original think about buying some contributors cd's directly like Toot & The Maytalls.

5 out of 5 stars Double the reggae essentialness.......2006-03-04

The original version of this film soundtrack is the single most influential reggae album in the genre's history, and the most listenable reggae record from beginning to end. That's always been a bit surprising, given that the film's director selected the tracks in a harried weekend of picking-and-choosing among songs that struck a personal resonance. It's doubly amazing that the songs fit the film so perfectly, and that Chris Blackwell was able to weave the tracks from various artists into such a perfect, cohesive album. This is the essential introduction to reggae music, and a collection whose spirit and musicality simply never ceases to amaze.

Hip-O's 2-CD deluxe reissue couldn't really double the magic of the album's original dozen tracks, but the eighteen additions do help flesh out reggae's 1968-72 period. Highlights include Desmond Dekkar's anthemic "Israelites," Johnny Nash's pop-crossover "I Can See Clearly Now" (as well as his take of Bob Marley's "Guava Jelly"), the Maytals' biographical "54-46 (That's My Number)" (as well as their catchy sing-along "Pomp & Pride"), The Melodians soulful "Sweet Sensastion," and Jimmy Cliff's alternate take, "The Bigger They Come The Harder They Fall."

The packaging includes song lyrics, notes from director Perry Henzell and producer Chris Blackwell, and liners from reggae writer David Katz. The sound quality is sharp throughout. The deluxe edition is a bit pricey as an introduction (especially considering the nice-pricing of the original single disc), but worthwhile for anyone who's loved the original vinyl to death. 3 out of 5 stars How jamaica is .......2005-02-08

The thing that I didn't like abut the movie was that how the people talk and the jobs they had selling drugs and also where they live.

The thing that I like about the movie was the music they have and how Jamaica is.-- Christina---

5 out of 5 stars The First Album to Set the Stage For Reggae.......2004-12-01

While Bob Marley & the Wailers put the reggae genre at large in the mainstream of music, Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" set the stage for Marley in 1972, creating America's first real cult-following of the Jamaican music with songs like Jimmy Cliff's title track, "The Harder They Come," and "Many Rivers to Cross".

The original soundtrack featured featured five songs by Jimmy Cliff from the film in which he played the lead role along with other songs by Toots & the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, the Melodians, and Scotty with songs like "Pressure Drop," "007 (Shanty Town)," "Rivers of Babylon," and "Draw Your Breaks". The soundtrack showed reggae at its finest from 1967-1972.

The deluxe edition offers plenty of bonus material from many of the same artists on the original soundtrack and other artists as well, such as Eric Donaldson, Johnny Nash, Dave & Ansel Collins, and the Ethiopians. "The Harder They Come" set the stage for reggae in America, so if you want to find out where it all began, purchase the deluxe edition of "The Harder They Come," a crucial addition to any reggae collection.

Jamaican filmmaker Perry Henzell made reggae an integral player in his gritty 1973 saga of a renegade Kingston singer who becomes a modern Robin Hood, casting one of the style's earliest stars, Jimmy Cliff, in the lead, and filling this soundtrack with classics from Toots & The Maytals ("Pressure Drop," "Sweet and Dandy"), Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town"), The Melodians ("Rivers of Babylon"), and the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad"). Cliff himself gets pole position, however, getting in the first ("You Can Get It If You Really Want") and last ("The Harder They Come") words in this first-rate reggae primer, which also features Cliff's enduring "Many Rivers to Cross." --Sam Sutherland

If you like reggae, you should have this CD. If you could only own 5 reggae CDs of all that is out there, this deserves to be one of those 5. I never tire of listening to these tracks after all these years. The other reviewers have ably described this music. I heartily agree. 5 more stars for The Harder They Come.

I am a bit disappointed in the CD. It doesn't seem to be REAL reggae as I think of it. It seems more like Americanized reggae. Maybe I just need to get a Marley CD. 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' sounds like a song from Sesame Street.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and rare!.......2006-12-19

Out of nearly a hundred Christmas music recordings, this one is one of my all-time favorites. The lyrics are all in Danish - of which I understand not a word - but the effect is pure Christmas. Beautiful voices and exquisite melodies combine in an unforgettable manner. The overall effect is very soothing and gentle. In fact, many pieces seem to be lullabies. I would suggest sampling several of the songs to see if these gentle sounds appeal to you.

    Album Description

No doubt about it, life is hard. Fortunately, some things are better when they're hard. For Detroit rock `n' roll outfit, The Paybacks, it's best when its "Harder and Harder." It's with that philosophy that Detroit's defenders of the rock return with "Harder and Harder," their second album for Get Hip Records.

5 out of 5 stars Detroit: Where The Weak Are Killed And Eaten..........2004-10-28

Musical accompaniment on a recent jaunt straight up I-75 to the wilds of northern Michigan was provided courtesy of the "Shrek 2" soundtrack (Pete Yorn covering the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen In Love"? - I think I feel sick.) and my wife's Norah Jones and Dave Matthews Band CD's (ditto). As if that wasn't enough to send a mere mortal to be fitted for a straight white vest, there was also the news that New York Dolls bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane, recently revitalized and sounding better than ever during a series of reunion shows, had died from leukemia, the revelation that Roger Daltrey was embracing the corporate dollar by appearing on an infomercial pushing Time-Life's latest 70's classic rock collection, and the happenstance discovery of Alice Cooper's mug on a can of Miller Genuine Draft at a gas station convenience store. I'm not sure what upset me more - the fact that Miller and "Rolling Stone" are using the 50th anniversary of rock and roll to push their respective products or the irony of Cooper being a dedicated Budweiser man back in the '70s, drinking a case of the suds every day.

When I got home, I found the new Paybacks album had landed in my mailbox.

    There really is a God...

Here's where I usually get in trouble. Wendy Case has whatever the female equivalent of testicular fortitude is, the former "Detroit News" entertainment scribe packing it all in for a chance to grab the brass ring or at the very least, a cathartic opportunity to plug in, turn up, breathe stale cigarette smoke, stew in her own sweat, and sleep in her clothes.

2002's "Knock Loud" was nothing short of a cocksure roar of satisfaction, seething with ire and vitriol and smelling faintly of the barmaid's apron, Case attempting to splatter her larynx against all four studio walls and drummer Mike Latulippe, bassist John Szymanski, and guitarist Marco Delicato firing on all fours. It's one helluva beautiful wreck and in "Just You Wait," "Hollywood," "If I Fell," and "Don't Lay It On Me," contains four songs which easily stand up to anything to come out of D-town (or Hamtramck - basically the beating rock and roll heart in Detroit - for that matter) since The Mutants, The Torpedos, Elvis Hitler, and See Dick Run roamed the earth.

Although two years on this dismal rock have come and gone since the release of "Knock Loud," the band hasn't lost a step despite the amicable exit of Delicato. Danny Methric (ex-Muggs and Kingsnakes) has stepped in seamlessly on lead and as a result, "Harder And Harder" is hotter than a Death Valley barbecue, an avalanche of great songs delivered with blunt simplicity and tattooed with the breathless, God-given rasp of Case.

Unfortunately for Case, dogged comparisons to Chrissie Hynde, Janis Joplin, and, in some quarters, Slade's Noddy Holder, seem to be her cross to bear but it's probably safe to say none of them have ever purged their soul as Case does on "Today And Everyday," Methric's chicken-peck intro setting up a confession booth-worthy outpouring ("I just want the same things that you do/Somebody to hold me, someone I can hold on to") that had this hack reaching for both an air guitar to flail and a beer to cry into. That's the sound of my youth disappearing. Although over much too soon at 1:45, this is where the planets magically align for The Paybacks.

Latulippe and Szymanski grab the stop-and-start "Me" by the scruff of the neck and make it swing, Case with THAT VOICE , grunting like she's clearing an obstructed bowel before Methric, waiting patiently, chimes in on the breaks with malicious intent, a loose cannon loaded with equal parts Steve Jones, Ace Frehley, and Johnny Thunders. With all apologies to Strummer and Jones, he's my guitar hero.

"When I'm Gone," "Bright Side,"and "Scotch Love" are all red meat and arteries bursting wide open and grey matter boiling in flame, Case in the driver's seat and makin' love with the lights on along the way, perplexed about the stupefying powers of alcohol but never trying to answer the questions of the universe. "Lazy Things" cribs the stomping, chest-baring riff from The Cult's "Wildflower" (via Angus and Malcolm Young), turns it upside down and gives it a good swift kick in the cajones and when Case tells you you're going skinny dipping in the creek, you'd better get ready to drop trou.

Although "Harder And Harder's" production (by the band with help from John Smerek) is bone, gristle, and popping veins held together with sinew and hits harder than a Jack White sucker punch, it's Case's willingness to wear her heart on her sleeve, as well as various parts of her anatomy, and the band's single-minded devotion to beating their instruments to a bloody pulp that make it shake and shimmy. And let's face it, ending on an up note - a ragged, boisterous cover of Marc Bolan's "Celebrate Summer," featuring a gloriously punchdrunk solo from Methric - doesn't hurt either.

Despite critical plaudits (some would argue hype) flying the way of Detroit's much ballyhooed "garage rock scene" (quotes are mine) over the past few years, it's taken The Paybacks to finally give it some street cred, firmly planting their flag up its arse and in turn delivering the first great album to come out of this ham-and-egg, shot-and-a-beer burg this millennium.

Let this be the soundtrack to your life before some major beer company snaps 'em up for an ad campaign.

I stumbled on these guys as an opening act in Seattle by accident. What a great stumble! EVERY track is tight and rocks. No pop b.s., no filler. Straight rock. I have played this sucker over and over and never grow tired of them.

See them live if you get the chance too.
