Editorial Reviews

Future Songs is the seventh album from the Cranes, probably one of the most misinterpreted bands on the planet. The Cranes have often been portrayed as industrial noise merchants, more often as simple goths. One reviewer described singer Alison Shaw as "a baby trapped in a toolbox"; this was intended as a blithe putdown, yet, taken from a different perspective, it's strangely accurate. Deliberately juxtaposing her vocals--her plaintive, unearthly voice delivering painfully open songs of love and loss--with her brother Jim's often punishing soundscapes, the Cranes were always primarily concerned with the way innocents are bruised and broken by life's hard, cold machinery. With Future Songs, they continue along the same path, with Alison still clinging to childlike hopes of happiness, despite the collapse of her relationships, and again producing a heart-wrenching set of melodies. And Jim Shaw, no longer intent upon bludgeoning his audience into submission, creates an ingenious and deeply moving backdrop, ranging from the dubby ambience of "Don't Wake Me Up" to the delicate acoustic guitar of "Even When." Future Songs is another superb collection from a laudably diligent, gloriously idiosyncratic, and tremendously gifted band. --Dominic Wills

To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood

Album Description

There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to a happy place.......2007-07-23

I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere over the Rainbow", but do enjoy the entire range of songs. Would recommend it, however, I probably will not buy any more of his stuff; a little goes a long way.

5 out of 5 stars You need this classic for your Hawaiian music collection.......2007-07-21

This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

5 out of 5 stars I love this cd!.......2007-07-20

Never one to care much about Hawaaian music, these songs by IZ blew me away.I first heard his singing of Somewhere over the rainbow on a tv commercial. Had to buy the cd and I wasn't disappointed. His voice is soothing and sad and mellow. My favorite is Over the rainbow.

I know that is where IZ is now in the land of lemon drops and bluebirds. He is happy and singing his songs to the angels. Buy this cd and you will be very glad you did!

Taken in one concentrated best-of dose, it becomes evident what a coup the B-52's pulled off when they turned their own concentrated craziness into genuine hits. This is some of the weirdest stuff ever to make the charts, much less be loved by the masses. It's all here though--the mad surf guitar of Ricky Wilson (and later Keith Strickland), the banshee wails of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and, of course, the, um, well, let's say vocalizing of freaky Fred Schneider. "Party out of Bounds" with a "Rock Lobster" on "Planet Claire," or "Roam" over to the "Love Shack" in "Private Idaho." Whatever you do in the B-52's universe will at least be good, clean, perverse fun. Contains two new songs. --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars B-52 is the bomb.......2007-06-02

Awesome compilation of the B52s kind of off-beat, wacky, yet lovable and totally listenable music. The lyrics of many tunes are weird but funny. Scneider's goofy singing style somehow works well too. Lots of tracks here, including lesser-known gems. Especially cool tunes: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia [kinda eerie in a way], Love Shack [probably the one with most radio play back in the day], Roam, and Good Stuff. But all are solid. Very good CD to pop in and just let play, no need to be anywhere near the skip button.

5 out of 5 stars B-52's - 'Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation' (Reprise).......2007-05-15

Review number 62. Fantastic eighteen track retrospect compilation of this reunited TOP of the line '80's new wave band. As for this genre of music, it JUST doesn't get much better than this. I saw the B-52's play a free gig at an outdoor mall just last summer and it was honestly one of the funnest concerts I've attended in sometime. As for this CD, you get to fully experience once again the college radio staples and some of the band's lesser known goodies, like "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Party Out Of Bounds", the unreleased 'original' edit for "Summer Of Love", "Love Shack", "Roam", the awesome "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" plus two new cuts, of which both are good. What, no "Dance This Mess Around" ? That's my personal B-52's favorite of all time. Nonetheless, 'Time Capsule' is still highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars B-52's.......2007-02-03

I saw Rock Lobster done "live" on Saturday Night live back in the early 80's. They did a good job. I thought that they were just another Punk band. But they showed their Pop sensiblities with "Rock Lobster." It didn't hurt that it turned out to be one Major hit! Of course, "Love Shack" and "Mesopotamia" were not far behind. A classic album all the way around - Five stars for the B-52's Tan-Ru!! (whatever that means...)

5 out of 5 stars Hair Today, Here Tomorrow.......2006-06-10

Every once in a very long while a thoroughly delightful group appears out of nowhere with something new to say and a distinct, immediately identifiable way of saying it. Such is the case with the B-52's who pull off a nearly impossible trick and make it look easy. For starters, they are musically intoxicating and certainly can't be topped for dance party appeal. The vocal blend of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson is a lovely, natural fit, and Fred Schneider's droll, spoken word additions provide an effective and often hilarious counterpoint. Keith Strickland knows that a band like this needs basic, pure drumming, nothing flashy, and he delivers. The late, lamented Ricky Wilson provided great retro surf guitar, right on time and target. The frequent use of left-field sound effects sprinkles the songs with splendid surprises.

The song writing, especially lyrics, is always slightly cracked and completely charming. Catchy tunes devoted to poorly planned parties, ruins in Mesopotamia, and making love in strobe light are delivered without irony; no matter how absurd the subject it all seems to make sense when the B-52's do it. As good as these individual contributions are, it is the collective vibe and sensibility that sends this group over the top, their Own, Private I Don't Know is recognizable from 100 paces.

While several anthology CDs are currently available, this one shines most brightly. I was considering the 2-CD compilation, Nude On The Moon, but decided against it after learning about the alternate mixes, etc. Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation has the absolute requisite B-52's hits you can't live without, and plenty more besides. Nice to know that future generations will have quality neo-absurdist surf-guitar dance party music to enjoy - they'll need it.

3 out of 5 stars summer of love.......2006-04-17

This is worth picking up for the remix "Summer of Love" alone. Much like another song based on the hot season - Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" - the track is fast-paced yet has a haunted, melancholy feel to it, as if something is lost forever. Quite a departure from the kitschy party songs the band is known for.

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce

If your Christmas isn't complete without listening to this music, this CD is a must buy. The audio quality is excellent despite the age of the film. Michael Cain and Belle come out crystal clear in their solo and ensemble work. The surprise of this album is the inclusion of two tracks (one by Beaker and Bunson and one by Scrogge's primary school teacher) that are not in the film. They are fun but unexpected. I could only ask that the CD last longer with such beautiful traditional music, but alas there is no more music to include. Maybe they could market Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island together in the future?

Amazing the songs are so cleaver and i have bee waiting for this for a long time, it has been out of print great cd and the movie is so awesome!!

4 out of 5 stars Holiday Classic with Kermit , Miss Piggy, and Michael Caine.......2007-01-12

The score from The Muppet Christmas Carol is full of the spirit of Christmas. The familiar story by Dicken's is given new life with the great score (mostly written by Paul Williams). Great energy is relayed to the listener as Scrooge (Michael Caine)is painted in words and as Bob Cratchet (Kermit the Frog) sings with his co-workers 'One More Sleep 'Til Christmas'. The love song duet between Scrooge (Michael Caine) and his fiancee during a ghostly vision brings great pathos to the character. For lovers of the Muppets and or Dickens, there is no better way to enter into the spirit of the season.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-08

These are some of the most heartwarming songs. I even find myself singing the ones about poor Mr. Scrooge.

5 out of 5 stars Classic techno fun.......2007-05-06

This CD brings back so many memories. It is filled with techo/dance music from the late 80's early 90's. If you like techno/house/dance club music then this is the perfect CD for you.

4 out of 5 stars Real Cool Soundtrack.......2002-04-12

One of the first techno/electronica soundtracks to gain prominence was the soundtrack to Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, which garnered mixed reviews. I'm ambivalent about it myself today, but my love of the soundtrack has not diminished, but actually gained higher levels of appreciation.

David Bowie leads off with "Real Cool World" in yet another one of his chameleonic incarnations. Even though clocking in at over five minutes, its quick-beat techno rhythm is not prolonged agony. It's the next track, the Thompson Twins' "Play With Me," my favorite by the way, that is unlike anything Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie have ever done. Sure, they ruled with Here's To Future Days, but in terms of keeping with the thematic sound and feeling of the movie, this song succeeds admirably.

When are the Pet Shop Boys not the Pet Shop Boys? Answer: when Neil Tennant does lead vocals in "Disappointed," in his side project Electronic, also with Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr.

The hardest song is the Ministry's Psalm 69 song, "N.W.O." and that boosts the album as well. It's the next song, the Cult's "The Witch," which is unlike anything from the new-wavy Love or AC-DC crunch of Electric. There's an industrial buzzing punctuated by chords slightly reminiscent of Electric. Ian Astbury sounds muted by the fuzz and buzz of this song. Still worthwhile, though.

Moby contributes two songs here, "Ah Ah" and "Next Is The E." This is early Moby at his best, and his triple figure BPM and soul-tinged female vocalist is in its best in "Next Is The E."

"Do That Thang" out-kapow's "Next Is The E" in its energetic vivaciousness, hard guitar chords, funky vocals, electronic effects on overdrive chaos. I dare anyone to hear this song and not feel energized.

Sassy is the key with My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, especially with the guitar crunchy "Sex On Wheelz," with its hard-driving vocals. "Her Sassy Kiss" is different, with whirly synthesizers and brassy inclusions.

The last three songs belong to the ambient category, with Pure's "Greedy," Brian Eno's "Under" and Tom Bailey's sexy and seductive "Industry And Seduction," complete with grinding metal on rock, whizzing sounds, sirens, light whips, and panting. "Under" brings about the contemplative image of staring at the stars, with the neon lights aglitter below in the never sleeping city from a high floor apartment window.

A case where the soundtrack is leagues more superior than the movie, and where the techno/industrial/ambient unity is achieved.

4 out of 5 stars "Cool" Soundtrack........2002-03-06

I thought the movie was good, but this cd is great. It's pretty much a good sampler of early 90's electronica and industrial music. "David Bowie" starts with a song that's as good as anything he's done in the past 11 years. There's a couple early tracks from "Moby" that are sweet. The whole disc is suprisingly good, right to the last instrumental track, which jumps from speaker to speaker. But the real punch comes from "Ministry", "The Cult", and "My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult". Those three songs are awesome. If all soundtracks were this good, it really would be a "Cool World".

5 out of 5 stars Bad movie, great soundtrack.......2001-02-18

Too often, great movies produce soundtrack albums that don't reflect the quality of the movies they come from. Sometimes, though, lousy movies have wonderful soundtracks that deserve to exist separately from the dreck that spawned them, and "Songs from The Cool World" is one such album. The movie it comes from might be weak, but the CD represents a terrific sampler of early technodance songs from the likes of Thompson Twins, Mindless, The Future Sound of London and, of course, the acknowledged master of techno, Moby; a couple of his earliest hits can be found here. There are also tunes from David Bowie (who does the lead track), Ministry and Brian Eno. My fave track, though, and the reason I bought the album in the first place, is "Sex on Wheelz," a fun, rowdy, nasty song that plays hard from beginning to end.

In short, this is a fun, varied, thoroughly danceable soundtrack CD that far exceeds the quality of the movie it's attached to. Skip "Cool World," but buy the album and dial it up.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Ecstasty.......2000-04-15

This is a Must-Have soundtrack if you like New Wave, electronic/techno music - almost every song is outstanding. Especially cool tracks are Electronic's Disappointed (side project of New Order's Benard Sumner and Smith's Johnny Marr, guest vocals Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant), Moby's Ah-Ah, David Bowie's 'Real Cool World', & Future Sound of London's Papua New Guinea.

Well into his 30th year of recording, Eric Andersen picks up where his 1989 masterpiece Ghosts upon the Road left off. His 15th album was eight years in the making, pieced together from collaborations with Rick Danko, Richard Thompson, Benmont Tench, Howie Epstein, and Bob Dylan bassist Tony Garnier. It demonstrates the virtues of patient songwriting in sensual love lyrics, sprawling wanderer's laments, and Beat-poetry-inspired litanies of sins and ecstasies. "He thought of his mother / He thought of the automat / The space shuttle / Jersey cows and poison lollipops / As the dry heaves rose in his chest," he intones over a smoky, funky groove. Of all the folksingers to find their way out of the '60s, only Dylan and Joni Mitchell have remained as restless and provocative as Andersen. His imagination has grown ever more sure, his voice has become an unearthly, stately whisper, and his songs are still shapes by a singular, exceptional artistic will. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Eric Andersen's Mature Tour-de-Force.......2000-05-11

I first heard some of the material on this album when Eric Andersen appeared at the now defunct Folkways Coffee House in Peterborough, New Hampshire on Thanksgiving eve in 1992. Andersen is the real thing, a super talent who writes, composes, and performs mostly his own material. That night his rendition of "Rain Falls Down in Amsterdam" brought chills, cheers, and a standing ovation from the hundred or so members of the audience, who were moved by his graphic, emotional, and deeply personal warning of the nascent rise of neo-nazis thugs all over the world. Anderen has long been a personal favorite, and is even better in person than on CD, which is no mean feat. Herein, from the opening bars of "Sudden Love" all the way to "Hills of Tuscany" he gives new credence to the idea that real talent can continue to grow and mature litteraly over decades and decades. Like James Taylor or Van Morrison, Andersen's music is based on timeless melodies and lyrics, but unlike these other superstars, he imbues his songs with a gritty edge that reveal his insight into the nature of things. Most of the songs in this CD are written by Andersen, (with the single exception of "When I'm Gone"), and the range of his writing and composition talent is apparent. His voice is at once sweet, mellow, and smoky, and his ability and arrangements based around his sparkling acoustic guitar work is marvelous to listen to again. Buy this album, listen to it, and be prepared to be entertained and amazed.

some people change and some just stay the same..trouble is most of this generation of writers just did themselves in.....thank god eric andersen is around to inform us what happens to talented writers when they stick around for the distance(ok ok dylan is still here but thats another planet)......eric has gotten sad about the world and our foibles and that could be a real drag to listen to but it isnt...he even makes a murder in chinatown groove along. If you didnt recognize the voice you would think this was robbie robertsons first solo album. So if you are expecting the old eric forget it but if you like the sound of change listen in

4 out of 5 stars Lyrical & Intelligent.......1999-05-11

Like a fine wine, time has matured the work of this master songwriter. Sudden Love is about as close to a hit single as Eric is likely to have, but the depth of emotion and the sincerity of soul introspection is fine dining in an era when most music is like fast food. This CD compliments Eric's efforts with Fjeld, Danko & Andersen on the 2 Ryko CD's. If you're looking within yourself for answers, enhance the journey with this beautiful music!

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece !!!!!!!!!.......1999-04-10

Having been an Eric Anderson fan for more than a few years, it was a real joy to have him finally release a solo album. This album follows the path that Ghosts Upon the Road set. A true living legend whose songs never fail to evoke feelings. The song Rain Falls Down in Amsterdam brings to chilling reality the menace of racism. Not a bad song on the album, and such variety. An album you will truly enjoy.......

5 out of 5 stars Eric in concert.......1999-03-14

I haven't bought this CD yet, but I sure will! After seeing Eric Andersen in concert I'm hooked. His songs speak to the soul in a way that is hard to describe.

    4 out of 5 stars don't wake me up.......2003-10-05

I have always wanted to check out Cranes' music for awhile now. I was intrigued by an interview with the brother/sister act in an issue of OUTBURN from last year. I came across "Future Songs" today in the used bins and thought this was a good time for me to check them out. The second I put this cd into my stereo I must admit that I was a bit put off by the childlike vocals of Ali Shaw. She reminded me a bit of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval. In fact this entire cd reminded me a lot of Mazzy Star, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and a smidgeon of The Cocteau Twins. After I listened more into the cd, Ali's vocals became less and less grating on me. I became more accustomed to her child-like vocals. The music was a bit more mellower than I expected which for me can be a slight problem since I like my music loud and fast. Nevertheless I found the Cranes' music very relaxing to listen. I particularly enjoyed songs such as "Sunrise" and "The Maker of Heavenly Trousers" (which I thought was the stand out track for me on the entire album). I don't know if the bonus remixes were that necessary to include on the album. To be honest, the remix for "Don't Wake Me Up" didn't sound any more different than the original version. For all its flaws, I immensely enjoyed "Future Songs". I found the music to be very soothing to listen to, and it will especially be very soothing to listen to after a hard day's work at the office.

    4 out of 5 stars so close..........2002-11-03

The Cranes have long been one of my all time favorite bands. Albums like "loved" and "winged of joy" are truely good albums, with Alison Shaws "little girl lost vocals" driving probably the best "shoegazer/goth" sounds around. If you have heard none of these albums, its kind of a Cocteau Twins meets Slowdive meets My Bloody valentine. There has been a long gap between albums, but the Cranes have continued to tour, and continue to entrall their cult and fanatical fan base ( check out their unofficial web site to get an idea).

The last studio album , Population Four, was a disappointment, with a much more radio friendly and acessable sound. All in all it was very average as the very best points about the Cranes - eerie etheral vocals, wal of sound guitars, subtle yet pounding bass, were lost.

This album is a road to recovery- it is far less radio friendly than "Population Four" but is still a long way removed from the earlier sounds. There are hints though- the first track "Future Sougs" is pure Classical Cranes. A standout track, while the rest still just does not rely heavily enough on the Cranes great strengths. This is still a very good album, gentle listener, but just does not have the punch of earlier days. If you are new to the Cranes, I recommend this AND "loved" to give you the full gamut. I look forward to the next installment with some anticipation.

    Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Almost But Not Quite.......2002-10-31

We all love The Cranes, admit it. The childlike vocals and ambient sounds are mesermizing. But don't expect another Wings of Joy. Sure Loved was a fine effort, probably their best since Wings of Joy. But this latest effort lacks the melodic originality of either of their best albums. Granted, there are a few choice enjoyable tracks that make this album worth owning, so long as you don't expect another mind-blowing album.

    5 out of 5 stars Audio crack!.......2002-08-15

This is my first Cranes album and I've been turned into a junkie. I've had it for 2 weeks and can't stop listening to it. Every time I loan it out I have to go ask for it back the next day to get a fix. I swear to god they've put something subliminal on it to get me hooked this bad. I would say you would like this album if you like Massive Attack, Cocteau Twins and Violet Indiana.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful music.......2002-06-05

Forever is a strange and beautiful album that combines restlessness and calm, like a river in the moonlight. Absolutely must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected music found by accident.......2005-03-16

Walking through the Roman Catholic Church of Galway, I heard some music through the speakers. Asking what kind of music that was, one gave me Liam Lawton's Ancient Ways Future Days.
I owe a lot of Christian music (old & new) but this cd is my most beloved cd. The combination of music, voice and words are so intens that it will not let you go. It was the finest cd I bought in ireland on holiday and I still bless the day that in the course of my walk through Galway, I came across that church.
By the way, I'm a protestant Dutchman.

    5 out of 5 stars powerful.......2000-09-05

A moving musical experience. The music and vocals are full of depth. This CD is as powerful as any I have heard. His other CD "Light the Fire" is beautiful as well. If you like John Michael Talbot, Marty Haugen, Michael Card , Taize...etc then you will love the sounds of Liam Lawton........ Peace

      Album Description

Pinataland's new album Songs for the Forgotten Future features 10 song-stories, each based on an historical event, each introduced by a bit of relevant music or found audio, and each fitting together as part of a weirdly complex "non-chronological schemata".

The menacing "Ota Benga's Name" summons the tragic ghost of the African pygmy who found himself living in the monkey house of the Bronx Zoo in 1904. "Flying Down to Moscow" is a Cold-War, Kremlin-Country tribute to Mathias Rust, the West German teenager who landed his small plane in Red Square in 1987. The epic "Sleepwalker" tells the story of the building of the transcontinental railroad, as seen through the closed eyes of a man sleepwalking across the great plains of the 1860's. These and other shadowy events from our collective unconcious are featured on Songs from the Forgotten Future.

5 out of 5 stars What is this stuff?.......2004-01-31

Too modern to be revivalists, too weird to be called "pop," too smart to be just a novelty act...there isn't really a word to describe what Pinataland does on "Songs for the Forgotten Future Vol. 1." The instrumentation (accordion, violin, tuba, guitar, drums) conjures images of some moth-eaten Salvation Army band. The witty and literate lyrics seem to back up that image, as they all revolve around bizarre, forgotten tidbits of history. But then there's the singing of Doug Stone and David Wechsler, which wouldn't sound out of place on an early '90's K Records release. And the arrangements of the songs themselves break down any easy labels for the music; they're simple enough to get stuck in your head for days on end but complex enough to allow you to discover bizarre little corners after repeated listenings. Every song does exactly what you want it to do but never in a way that you expect. Recommended for fans of Thomas Edison, P.T. Barnum, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, lonely astronauts, pygmies, pickpockets, the Tiger Lillies, and anyone who's ever dreamed of landing a plane in Red Square.

      5 out of 5 stars History Rocks!.......2003-07-30

This is a wonderful album. The vocals of Doug Stone and Dave Wechsler complement each other like Brinkley/Huntley. The instrumentation is at times inspiring and at other times somber and reflective. Its almost orchestral, with accordian, sousaphone, violin, guitar, and drums. The songs deal with stuff you never heard in history class, but its all true, you can look it up.
