There has rarely been a more appropriate album title. The arrival of Undermind was eclipsed by the departure of Phish. Twenty-one years after first coming together in 1983, the four members of the enormously popular Vermont jam-band announced their (final, we're assured) split two weeks before the disc's release because lead singer Trey Anastasio worried, "We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves or, worse yet, a nostalgia act." Based on this, the band's goodbye note, he was just being paranoid. Produced by Tchad Blake (Los Lobos, Elvis Costello), the follow-up to 2002's Round Room hardly sounds like the breezy old band that many measured up to the Grateful Dead, instead traversing into the dark classic rock territory of Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix in heavy, contemplative tracks like "A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing" and "Scents and Subtle Sounds." Perhaps what really caught Anastasio off guard was the appearance of his own pop instincts. --Aidin Vaziri
Product Description
Undermind is a fresh collection of tightly focused pop tunes from the ever-surprising Phish. It is their most accessible album, yet manages to be engaging without sacrificing the innovation that is the bands hallmark. Undermind captures the band in a state of near-perfect harmony, figuratively and literally, making every second count with taut, bristling arrangements. The album features pop nuggets, tinges of funky rock and gospel, skewed romantic humor, and, of course, fans of the bands more complex and improvisational side will find plenty to celebrate, as the band stretches out on several evocative tracks. The first single, "The Connection," is streamlined, melodic gem that features shimmering harmonies. Undermind was produced by Tchad Blake, who has worked with Los Lobos, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, and many others. Initial orders will include a limited edition bonus DVD featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album.

One of Phish's best studio CD's; DVD is worthless.......2006-05-21
You can get this with or without the bonus DVD. Save yourself a buck and get it without the bonus DVD. It is a 26 minute "making of" film. It offers no insights and is basically worthless.
This is probably Phish's last recording (but who knows). The CD is 51 minutes long and sound quality is good but muted.
I like this CD and other Phish CD's like Lawn Boy, where the music is cohesive and there is not a lot of silly, short junk thrown in. I am not a big fan of A Picture Of Nectar, or Farmhouse which jump all over the place and contain a bunch of worthless tracks.
This in not a jam CD or a CD of a bunch of long tracks, like Lawn Boy. But it is a very cohesive and interesting CD throughout.
The music here is a little more muted and atmospheric for Phish. It is more layered and intricate. And the song writing is very good. The kind of has a retro sound, almost like seventies progressive.
I almost gave it five stars, but it hits a slow patch in the middle with Nothing, Two Versions of Me and Access Me.
2nd only to Billy Breathes.......2005-09-14
When this album was released, the end of Phish had just been announced. Many fans, myself included, were disappointed in the poppy, simplified songwriting style of this album. The band lays it bare on this one; there are no complex, progressive arrangements found on older tunes like "Reba" or "You Enjoy Myself". Instead, "Undermind" focuses on minimalism and the individual expressions of each band member, from Page McConnell's beautiful "Army of One", Mike Gordon's quirky "Access Me", and the very Trey Anastasio "Scents and Subtle Sounds". Drummer Jon Fishman, as seen on the excellent bonus DVD, brings in his old Gretsch kit and vintage cymbals for the sessions, and anyone who knows drums knows the gorgeous tone of Gretsch. After repeated listens, these lovely charms begin to shine through, and one can begin to hear the restrained yet characteristic playing from each of the members. This album sounds like four guys who love playing music together. The songs feel like unique performances rather than mixings of tracks, all captured impeccably in warm analog beauty by producer Tchad Blake. Songs like "Nothing" and "A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing" achieve moments of pure sonic bliss.
The album is not void of its problems; I still skip over the painfully sappy "Secret Smile". The song is completely out of place on this album. "The Connection" is also a slightly weaker track in my opinion, but it has started to grow on me.
The hard core, old school Phish fan will almost inevitably have a tough time with this album. I was disgusted with the majority of it when it was released. As mentioned before, it is an exercise in minimalism and simple, concise songwriting, void of the experimental jamming that Phish is known for. However, with repeated listens, it becomes more and more apparent that the band was trying to get to the core of why they played together, and why we listened to them, in the first place.
Phishing Together.......2005-03-22
This is the best overall studio phish cd. I don't want to ruin Undrmind for the people who havn't listned to this yet. So I won't go into details about the individual songs.
If you don't own any Phish cds and you are looking to buy one then this one is for you! They take all of their skillful jaming explorations and put it in pop accessable song structurs that are ACTUALY pop accessable.
The songs are catchy and get stuck in your head in such a good way! But the wicked jams are something spectacular! Each jam reveals who Phish really are!
Mike, John, Trey, and Page all shine brighter then ever! And they play together better than ever!
A going away present for keepsakes.......2005-01-20
It is for this reason that this is as good as it gets at this point in time. Phish has long since been stumbling down from their highest peak. As phans we all must share in the enormouse achievments Phish has made throughout its 21 years of existance. This is it and we need to love it.
From a critical standpoint, this is definatly short of brilliance. Despite the wonderful work of Tchad Blake, the music itself simply isn't what we have come to expect. It is far less creative than it was even ten years ago. It is far less catchy than it was on Farmhouse. It is instead much more relaxed and laidback. Almost too perfectly performed. The solos dont go anywhere unexpected and the words are too cliche. At least in the olden days Phish could get by with bad lyrics because the soul layed within the musicainship. Now that the music is simpler, the words standout. Just as they did on Farmhouse and even more so on Round Room, the words from Tom and the rest are just words. Not really inspired atall. That is by far my biggest problem with the record. My second biggest complaint lies within the sound of the songs. I agree to some extent with those who say that this doesn't sound like Phish. It sounds more like The Trey Anastasio band featuring Page, Mike and Jon. I mean to say that each song sorta sounds like each one's solo stuff being reworked to conform to Phish. There seems to be considerably less sparks flying and magic in the air. Though there are exceptions, this style of song development kills the magic.
With the magic gone, you must say "how does one actually like the record?" That is simple. The brilliant minds of Phish make this an enjoyable listen. Unlike any of their other records, it can be listened to nearly all the time because works in so many moods because it is without a mood of its own. It is pop.
The end of their starting point.......2004-12-02
For those of you out there who follow the band...their hiatus was a withdrawal into themselves, to rekindle and rethink not only their music and individual ideas but mostly to examine the relationships in their lives. Aside from the personal view which we can only guess at, the relationship they had with the many fans was the biggest issue in my opinion. Did their continuation as a group seem to be headed into a healthy or unhealthy area in terms of CDs, shows, and what fans need and want from them. Trey esspecially was in crisis over this and it yielded a lot of anger, confusion, and regret. Yet is also produced some of the greatest music Phish ever made, with paradoxical themes and sounds clashing and merging with an incredible allegory of human soul-searching and thoughts. Phish music is fluid and transistional. The CDs and shows refer to each other, other's music, different versions of themselves at different times and us, the fans. With GHOST it became the muse itself, allowing jams and songs to transform into giant monster tunes that eclipsed the starting point. It is a heavy stew to eat and always has been, but at the end with Round Room and Undermind Phish created a finality that also becons for listeners to reverse and use their recent music as a tool to understand their entire catalog dating back to the 80s.
The subtext and lyrics along with great music make this an essential phenomenal CD to get and return to again and again. The music is polished and crisp and very different from Round Room...which I also recommend. Phish departed on top, both in their live shows and on their recordings. Sorry to go on and on like that.

The Last Phish.......2006-05-05
Gone phishin'.......2004-09-01
Though of course, Phish is broken up now, and they mean it. And this is their last album - and they mean it. No really, after this tour, they are not touring. Ever. Again.
For a discography as staggering in size as Phish's, it's easy for an album to get lost in the shuffle. I don't see that happening to this one. Highly recommended. Though, if you're looking for a regular Phish jam album, this ain't it.
Good as usual, but not very Phishy.......2004-06-29
Again, Undermind is a good solid album and a must have for every Phish enthusiast. Just don't act so surprised when it's not what you expected.
One thing is for sure, every album Phish produces is always different.

Album Description
"Eric Arn and the Undermind have put together another quality mindbender, a concisely trippy work recommended for anyone interested in pursuing new and more colorful methods of rock." - AUSTIN CHRONICLE"Eric Arn has led Primordial Undermind through several incarnations and as many musical evolutions, none of them interchangeable but all, in their ways, vastly rewarding." - ALL TIME MUSIC
Eric Arn and his Primordial Undermind has tirelessly mined the nether-regions of avant psych-rock vigilantly for the past fifteen years. Throughout the eighties, Arn cut his teeth in the legendary Crystallized Movements, the Twisted Village flagship band that also spawned Magic Hour and Major Stars (Wayne Rogers & Kate Village). With a wealth of 7" singles and a number of compilation appearances throughout the nineties--plus albums for September Gurls, Camera Obscura, and Emperor Jones--the Primordial Undermind trajectory has grown and evolved with each outing. A rotating membership came to typify the band, and a restlessness to stay put in one soundform denotes a steady progression from distorted, psychedelic Nuggets-esque overload to full-blown free instrumental rock, and everything in between. Just before relocating from Austin, Texas to Vienna, Austria in late 2004, Arn engaged in a furious series of studio sessions with his Austin crew. The results have been honed down to a fantastic new album entitled Loss of Affect, the most outré document of the Primordial Undermind sound to date. Cosmic ethno-drone mantra, avant acoustic, and free acid-rock magma explosions adorned with various woodwinds, shakers, bells, and other instrumental ephemera provide evidence of a sharp left turn for the band. Loss of Affect is a seriously colorful feather in the cap for Primordial Undermind, ushering rock music outside for some truly complex and rapturously liberated explorations in sound.
