5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack.......2004-03-22

It may be hard to track this one down, but it's entirely worth every penny. The music to this soundtrack is so beautiful, I know very little French, but it doesn't matter.

This is also one of my favorite Films as well. If you haven't seen the film, rent it. There's nothing like it, it's beyond fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars That's one of the CDs you juz had to have in your collection.......2003-06-15

This sountrack is simply beyond review. I first knew about it when one of my friends brought the DVD of the movie to the company. And then it was like magic: "I just have to get this soundtrack anyhow!!" I would suggest that it's better to get the DVD first. Knowing the movie will eventually help you to appreciate the sondtrack more coz it's more influential together with the story. I guess not many people know about this movie in my country and I'm grat that my friend helped me discovered this WONDERFUL CD.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not worthy to write a review of this.......2002-01-31

This movie and soundtrack are beyond reviews! There is nothing to say except ... beautiful. I have listened to this CD of the complete movie soundtrack countless times and still find myself amazed by it. The music is the ultimate of Legrand's sweet, searching, yet loungey jazz, with occasional tango and big band style diversions. The movie, while beautiful to look at, is a very simple story in its essence. This soundtrack is what makes people sit through it over and over again. (No disrespect meant to the excellent cast and the incomparable debut of Mlle Deneuve!) The singing voices are as refreshing as cool water and the French comes through with exquisite clarity.

5 out of 5 stars "Les Parapluies..." -- a modern masterpiece.......2001-08-29

The movie "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" is beautiful, tender, and alive with vivid color; this complete soundtrack recording is no different. From the breathy tones of the opening flute solo all the way through to the stirring finale, evey nuance and texture of Michel Legrand's very colorful score is captured perfectly on this recording. If you're unfamiliar with the music from this movie, you may be surprised to discover a number of familiar melodies -- songs that have worked their way into today's jazz and adult contemporary music repetoire (most natoably "Watch What Happens" and "I Will Wait For You"). For me, the real treasure of this recording is the attention the engineers paid to capturing the cast members' singing voices. The French language comes across crystal-clear. And even if you don't speak or understand the language, the passion within each voice -- the rainbow of emotions given forth from the singers, matched perfectly with the sweeping score -- allows the listener to understand the emotinal gyst of what each character is expressing at that moment. And speaking of the cast -- simply amazing. My favorite moment (I can't accurately express why) is when Guy comes home to his aunt's apartment and he runs into her caretaker, Madeline. When they greet each other ("Bon soir Guy", "Bon soir Madeline"), there is such a "tender tension", an unspoken adoration, I practically melt each time.
What really makes this recording the ultimate for "Umbrellas" fans are the six bonus tracks. They are perfect examples of how this beautiful music is being re-interpreted into the jazz scene. Tony Bennett does a terrific turn with "Watch What Happens", and Michel Legrand himself takes to the piano and delivers an amazing 8-minute variation on "I Will Wait For You" -- you have to hear it to believe it!
And, by the way, if you don't have the video already in your collection, I would suggest purchasing it at the same time you're buying this CD. The movie has been restored to it's bright, vivid original color -- eye-popping!

5 out of 5 stars All of the breathtaking music...and more.......2000-06-24

The complete score to Jacques Demy's one-of-a-kind musical is here, and with bonus tracks, adding up to some 115 minutes of material. While not all of Michel Legrand's music is as memorable as the haunting main theme, the pieces which range from playful to mournful are uniformly beautiful and spiced up considerably by Demy's dialogue/lyrics, always sung rather than spoken.

3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Album Description

UMBRELLAS' ILLUMINARE
(Latin; meaning to light the way or illustrate.)

When Umbrellas' debut hit the shelves, it was recognized as a dynamic, eager offering. The band toured heavily and new ideas began swimming inside Scott Windsor's head. Those ideas formed icebergs—and the only option was to dismantle and re-conduct the near-avalanche of visions, abstractions, melodies and structures. Hanging blankets as sound control across the empty, dusty and evocative shell of an old comedy club, Scott and his Umbrellas started tracking their new record Illuminare. They went forth in unsafe, less-than secure scenarios with nearby `06 tornados in Oklahoma.

James McAlister (Ester Drang, Sufjan Stevens) played the drums, percussion, programming, and added lively, innovative ideas like sampling Scott's voice as the keyboard parts for the song "Again and Again". Most of these songs only had one take on vocals—around 80% of the record. Illuminare grapples with notions of solitude, life, death, and the plain old blues. Scott sings of realistic love, infatuation, satisfaction, disappointment, life-balance, the letting-go, appeasement, idealism, and grace—all with a backdrop of blustery fall-out tunes with strange swirls of sound, smatterings of echoes and pulsings, huge bass hammerings and bells to chime the gladness in being right there where one's supposed to be. Weathering the storms, and taking on the shadows and memories of calmer times and warmer rooms.

5 out of 5 stars Hooks Galore.......2007-05-30

I was a huge fan of Umbrellas' self-titled debut album. When I heard that they'd released a follow-up, I knew I had to hear it. I was not disappointed in the least. This is a very solid album; each track brings something special to the collection, and sounds crafted by this band are phenomenal. I did a little bit of research and found that James McAlister of Ester Drang/Pedro the Lion joined up with Umbrellas to collaborate on Illuminaire, what a bonus. If you like these guys, definitely check out Ester Drang and Pedro the Lion.

This is a fabulous album to listen to while driving, hanging out, exercising, you name it. I think it's the variation in the songs that makes it so versatile. The songs are also memorable and will have you singing/sighing along with them in no time. I've had it on repeat for a while now and have yet to tire of these songs. A few favorites:
1. Again & Again
2. Angel or Demon
3. Ships
4. Dignified Exit Society

great cd, great band, very soothing for a unique and soothing sound...

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Find -- Worth A Listen!.......2007-02-09

The first time I heard a song by Umbrellas was while I was watching an episode of the tv show "Jericho" -- the song "Ships" was playing as background music during one scene, and it was *gorgeous*! ("Ships" was also recently heard on an episode of "Grey's Anatomy," so someone must be listening!)

I had never heard of this group before, but after that song, I wanted more by Umbrellas, and subsequently got their debut CD and this CD as well. (Hadn't been so jazzed about a group since finding VAST!) All of the Umbrellas' songs have gotten steady play on my iPod, but I have a preference for the songs you'll find on Illuminare. "Ships" is still my favorite, but I also love the catchy "Again and Again," the beauty and longing of "Dignified Exit Society" and the lyrics of "Angel or Demon" always make me smile ... in that song, the singer is trying to figure out if the girl he's just met will be one to keep, or one to beware of ... and we've all been in a situation like that at some point!

Like the previous reviewer, I'm surprised that more people haven't posted here about Umbrellas -- I found them to be very talented, and Scott Windsor's vocals are raw and compelling, and often hypnotic. Don't be surprised to find yourself listening to the songs on "Illuminare" (and their earlier debut album) "again and again." Definitely a recommended buy!

4 out of 5 stars It's a shame I tell ya'!.......2006-08-15

It's a shame when a band like this hasn't gotten a single review. This album is great. The music is great. The vocals are great. Do yourself a favor and just listen. Listen and love.

5 out of 5 stars So Strong.......2005-09-15

Celtic Tenors are marvelous. The only "tenor group" offering harmony. The material is beautiful and beautifully performed.

3 out of 5 stars Celtic Music Meets the Boy Bands.......2003-11-09

If one looks at the jacket of the disk THE CELTIIC TENORS, the first impression is that the disk could also be called "The Three Irish Tenors goes boy band." The three Celtic tenors: Matthew Gilsenan, Niall Morris, and James Nelson, look rather young and hip, almost in a stereotypical way, and it is clear that the disk's first priority is to be a money maker. The obvious attempt at making a dollar (or in Ireland a punt or Euro) does not make the disk a waste. There are some very enjoyable musical moments on the disk, though nothing all that original or deep. The music ranges from popular tunes, traditional Irish music, and some light classical and operetta pieces. The musical highlight of the disk is an A Capella version of Barber's Adagio. This arrangement retains the piece's beauty as well as its haunting qualities. Though the song "Mull of Kintyre" is somewhat cheesy, it works on this disk and is one of the better tracks. The disk begins with a song titled "Nella Fantasia" a tune written by Emilio Morricone, and it's from a theme from his score of THE MISSION. According to the liner notes, the composer reluctantly allowed words for the piece. He should have held out a bit longer. The tune was first performed by Charlotte Church. It does not work for her, and it does not work for the Celtic Tenors either. Since the tune is so beautiful in the film, it's too bad it was not simply left alone.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Not Your Ordinary Everyday Irish Tenor Album.......2003-10-02

Currently So Strong is my most favorite album. Unlike other Irish tenor albums I own, So Strong resonates unique total excellence achieved rarely by the blending of voices. It is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary Irish vocal styling. Every cut is a true treasure. Listening to "Mull of Kintyre" I defy anyone not to hum this Paul McCartney melody. "The Green Fields of France" is a beautiful anti war anthem while "Ag Criost An Siol" is as spiritual as any gospel. Tears swell with "The Town I Loved So Well". "Something Inside" has an addictive beat and "The Contender" and "A Love so Beautiful" are haunting without being melancholy. I garantee that you'll have the CD player on high volume and repeat for the folk dance tune "The Star of the County Down" and inspiring "Anthem". I do.

5 out of 5 stars So Strong.......2003-04-07

I was watching public television and saw "The Celtic Tenors". The next day I found their CD, "So Stong". Finding voices of such obvious quality producing harmony so perfectly is rare. The first song brought me to tears and I wanted to stand and cheer. In fact, I did. In my opinion, "The Celtic Tenors" have absolutely clear voices and sing with "Heart" whether it's concerning the town they love or the love they let slip away. I have already suggested the CD to many friends who have immediately purchased one for themselves. What a treat, what a treat.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful mix of songs.......2003-01-15

I bought this on a whim after listening to the 30 second bits on this site. It is now one of my favorite albums. I can't stop listening to it! I walk around all day singing bits from 'So Strong' & 'Mull of Kintyre'. Each tenor is given equal billing & their voices flow together so well. I'm now anxiously awaiting either a US tour or a new album. The first album, simply titled 'Celtic Tenors' is wonderful as well. If you love men who can really sing, you will love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Deppressed.......2006-11-20

These days, it's almost cliché for singers to be deppressed, especially that of the indie/emo realm. However, there are two types of said singers: type one is really deppressed about being deppressed. They're the ones who're typically still pining away about their girlfriend not calling back, six months later. Type two is deppressed, and used to it--their persisting melancholy is almost apart of them, and it doesn't bother them so much anymore. Scott Windsor, lead singer for Umbrellas, is of the latter bunch. This self titled disc is a collection of tunes that drip with remniscence, melancholy, regret, and love.

The opener, "The City Lights," is smooth as good coffee, and the brilliant pop shimmering of "Broken Ice" glides into the moody darkness of "Emergency," with its urgent lyrics beautiful melodies. The biggest highlight on the record has to be what is also the most upbeat song, "The Black Dress", featuring a quirky baseline and sarcastic lyrics. The album's strength seems to be in its middle, with the atmospheric "Reactionary," and "June, Summer, Rose". My only complaint about the album would be that while for the most part the Umbrellas' anti-climactic style works, but sometimes it simply detracts, such as on "Set the Scene".

Overall, this is a beautiful collection of dark pop that fans of Lovedrug and Copeland would do well to add to their collections.

3 out of 5 stars its alright.......2005-11-10

welp for all its worth this a pleasent album. a collection of tuneful and sparse spidery guitar driven pop tunes. But it doesnt hurt to mention how slow and anti-climatic this album can be. i mean it wouldnt heard to add a little more then such snail paced tempo and Ed rose putting so much window dressing to make it interesting. The lead man has nice poppy voice than definetly sounds emo and manages to carry the tiny songs. The piano gives the music a melancoly moments and the music takes afew details out of the senimental mode and something more playful. But for the msot part its a senimental postcard from start to finish. and more less is stereotypical emo-pop

2 out of 5 stars Hmm. Yep........2005-07-19

"The City Lights" is a beautiful song with a compelling melody. The singer has a unique voice that compliments the music perfectly. Well done on that song, Umbrellas. Unfortunately, the rest of the album fails to support this bloody terrific track. Keep an eye on these fellows, they may hit their stride yet.

2 out of 5 stars umbrellas are not equal.......2005-06-25

While listening to Umbrellas for the first time, I decided to read the reviews for them on this site. First of all, Umbrellas are nothing like Radiohead. If you want a comparable band, I'd check out THE ELECTED. The lead singer in The Elected sounds very similar to that of Umbrellas. Although, neither The Elected or Umbrellas are amazing, they are more of a pop-like band. Overall, I've heard better.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Debut Effort.......2005-05-11

Review by Ray Harkins:

It's always refreshing to see labels try a different angle of marketing a new record of theirs. You can go about it one of two ways, push the hell out of the band with major amounts of comparisons, ex-member tag lines, huge stickers that display all of the bands accomplishments or you can take the riskier route and simply put it out there, with an air of mystery describing very little about the band and letting the music speak for itself.

Umbrellas is basically the guy who use to do the Lyndsay Diaries, but now lives in Southern California and began playing around with people that he enjoyed. Now, sprouts up Umbrellas that really focuses on the more "dark" side of indie rock than anything else. Hearing many different influences such as The Smiths, Death Cab For Cutie, and The Stills, Umbrellas have really shown that time and effort into writing your songs can really pay off when the time comes to showcase your music. Ed Rose (which seems to be a favorite of the Militia bands) produces this record and really showcases the bands ability to create lush melodies and focus on the songs that really stick out such as "Sleep Well Ghost". All of this coupled with a very stark yet eye-pleasing layout; Militia has another winner on their hands.

5 out of 5 stars Some great songs/up to date Saga remaster review.......2002-09-15

I love SAGA and the direction SAGA was going up to this point. I always thought during the late 80's to 90's they were better when they acted their age-writing mature, heartfelt and sophisticated songs. Saga were always a pop(ier) band waiting to happen in their earlier years- see: 'Will it be You', 'The Interview' and 'Someone Should.' I thought they sort of ditched or lost the hardrock vibe after 'Beginners Guide...'which is a great record. Many of their harder songs sound a bit corny during the 90's-ie)Some of Generation 13, and the wretched 'Pleasure and Pain.' Many SAGA fans may disagree w/ me but I just think the mellower, groovier SAGA songs sounded more natural than the rock songs at this point.

OK, that said 'Steel Umbrellas' was partially written for the 'Cobra' TV series, this I try to ignore. The songs are light, fun and very catchy. Very Bryan Ferry-ish,not one of them is a stinker. Sort of reminds me of 'Behaviour' or 'Wildest Dreams' which is totally misunderstood and underrated in my book!
The bonus is a total disappointment, 'I Walk w/ You' live taken from 'Detours'! WHY? Where are the non-lp studio tracks that were promised!!? Overall, though, a pretty damn good cd.

The SAGA remasters up until now, overall get a mixed review as far as the packaging, artwork, liner notes(none at all!). It'd be nice to read something about the records. Also, 'Behaviour' DOES NOT have a video track, much to my disappointment!! 'Misbehaviour' is one of my fave SAGA songs. I raced out to get this to see the video of this song only to find out it's a live, audio track-oh well. The artwork also is poorly put together, why not liner notes instead of terrible pictures or cheesy collages? I'll still buy all the remasters, it's the content on the cd that matters.
SAGA RULES!!

2 out of 5 stars Remastered but still lacking........2002-09-10

saga is remastering their entire collection. So far the first three saga releases sound great and have all the art restored. Steel umbrellas however is not one of my favorites. To add to this I own a polydor and a Bonaire version of this cd. The bonaire version has a song called WALKING ON THIN ICE and its better than most on the disc. Considering saga is adding bonus tracks why didnt they add this song instead of I WALK WITH YOU LIVE.I also own NEVER ALONE and WHY NOT as sinle edits on a best of, why no bonus tracks of these, the space is there. So it seems the remasters are like the SAGA WEBSITE never quite complete and always leaving you wishing there had been more. My comment on this one, skip it if you already own it.

4 out of 5 stars Good cd.......2002-09-08

I can't believe they left push it of this version of steel umbrellas. The one that should have been left off is pirate passcode pirate. Anyway this still has some excellent songs on it. Namely Why not, you're never alone, shake that tree. The rest are good too such as I walk with you and walking on thin ice.

It is hard to imagine anything more precious and cloying than this collection of popular songs sung by a person whose interpretations so infect her vocal techniques as to come out totally laughable. One could use this as a party record except that after a few songs one has to stop listening out of boredom and anger....

Not a diva in the traditional sense, Lesley Garrett is establishing herself as a kind of musical Michael Barrymore. A comfortable and generous host, she lets young Ramón Vargas shine alongside herself in "Parigi o cara" from La Traviata while Ladysmith Black Mambazo provides an interesting contrast to Garrett on the closing track. Undeniably, Garrett is happiest alone in front of the band, be it the BBC Concert or Grimethorpe Colliery. Among many seamless arrangements are a delightfully schmaltzy version of "La Vie en rose" and the beautiful new Karl Jenkins composition "He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven." Her take on Handel's "Tornami a vagheggiar" is frank and confident, though lacking in intimacy and ensemble play. "Bel raggio lusinghier" from Rossini's Semiramide is flawless, but Cole Porter's "Night and Day" sure don't swing. Garrett takes her widening audience on a distinctly unrocky road. Making sure she won't have to wait too long for her next gold, she makes the noises we like to hear, and therein lies the secret of her success. --Yngvil V.G.

1 out of 5 stars Her voice is one of the best, listen for yourself.......2000-12-07

Move over Jessye Norman et al, there's a sheriff in town. Her name is Lesley Garrett and she is ready to take over the music industry.

What a terrific voice Lesley has. She is probably one of the best keep secrets in the music world. She lives in England and that may explain why she has not been real popular here in the U.S.A. I think she is ready to make her mark her. All she needs to do is a lot of tours here and she will definately be noticed.

For this cd I was rather disappointed in her song selection. Lesley divided her material between classical and popular music. I have no doubt that Lesley is ideal for both venues, but I don't think it appropriate to mix the types of music.

On this cd I rate Lesleys' voice a perfect "10" but not the material used here.

You music fans out there, please allow Lesley to come into your heart with her song. It will be one of the best choices you have ever made.

Recommedation: Despite my one star rating, I think you should still buy this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Best CD by her so far!.......2000-08-12

I never liked her previous CDs. Definetly she is not world class opera singer except that she is from England(lots of local fans for patriotic reason). However, she is reasonalble good broadway show tune singer. This Cd will prove it. Only minus for this CD is that she shouldnot have recorded operatic pieces since she is not talanted opera singer at all.

    5 out of 5 stars Best of Garrett's Performance--"You'll Never Walk Alone".......2000-06-11

This CD, "I Will Wait For You" is the best recording from Garrett's discography. Her voice has warmth and color to showcase her rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Rogers and Hammerstein's "Carousel."

Also, featured on this recording is the title track, "I will Wait For You" by Michael Legrand. I have Jessye Norman's version on Norman's "Lucky To Be Me" album and my ears agree that Garrett's version is much more surpassing than Norman's version. Purchase this item, you won't regret it!
