A TRUE MASTERPIECE..........2006-07-27

... long before Chris became a wedding singer (via "Lady In Red"), he put out this terrific recording where every track's a winner - a big thumbs up to the producer (Robin Geoffrey-Cable or something sounding similarly blue-blooded, if memory serves me correctly), who I can't remember presiding over any other recording after this one.

Two things: 1) where's the beautiful album cover artwork featuring a train in the night; 2) when will a remastered version be available?

My First Album.......2006-01-20

...actually, to clarify the title of this review, it is the first album I ever had bought for me, or to clarify further, the first album I ever asked for.
Let me take you back to 1979..I was turning 13 and had first heard this album at scout camp during the summer. I was blown away by the songs...God and the Devil playing Cards, women who stripped (at 12, going on 13 it was really erotic) songs about WW1 and love and murder and spacemen.
Therefore, for my birthday in the September I asked my parents for 'Spanish Train by Christy Burke!.
Thankfully someone in the record shop knew what they were asking for and they arrived home with the album.
I played the album so much that both my parents ended up knowing all the words of every song (and they still do!).
As most other reviewers have mentioned, Chris is remembered by most people for the Lady In Red, but this is the album that will always define Chris De Burgh for me.
Over the years I have probably started to dislike some of the songs, especially Spaceman (na,na,na,na,na,na chorus kinda grates at this stage), however I still have the original album. I also have it on tape and on CD, which is probably the best way of explainign how good this is.

An incredible work.......2005-11-09

The problem with marketing someone like Chris DeBurgh in America is that he's not a pop singer. He's a poet. (A poet with Celine Dion-like levels of beltishness, but a poet nonetheless.) As a result, he was hideously misrepresented by his one big hit more than arguably any other singer in history, and his career never recovered.

Which is just too damn bad, because his poetry, in full force in Spanish Train And Other Stories, is a work of art. He can be funny (Patricia The Stripper), poignant (This Song For You), Optimisic (I'm Going Home), and even incredibly melodic and breathtakingly original at the same time (A Spaceman Came Travelling, and it's a CRIME that this doesn't get any airtime in the holiday season).

This album definitely isn't for everybody. DeBurgh makes no concessions to mainstream thought or religious squeamishness (yes, the devil cheats God, get over it). And he gets pretty dang loud, too. But if you approach with an open mind...and an appetite for riveting stories...you're going to love this, guaranteed.

The song writing on this album is amazing ... powerful lyrics make this a classic album. Chris DeBurgh's ability to tell a story in a 3 minute song occurs on several tracks ... "Spanish Train" is a classic, and "Spaceman Came Travelling" is still played at Christmas time on the radio, a different twist about
what happened on that special Christmas eve. My favorite is "Lonely Sky", a sad ballad, but written well. "Old Friend" and
"I'm Going Home" are also beautiful songs about friendship and the important things in life, and everybody knows "Patricia the Stripper", a fun song about a stripper who says "God made her a sinner, just to keep fat men thinner". In all, a classic work that should be in your C.D. collection!

A True Classic.......2001-02-03

Every track on this album has a story and a moral. The lyrics are as brilliant as they are varied and in each the music matches the mood of the story perfectly. Some of his best and most enduring songs had their debut on this album which I have loved on vinyl and CD since the 70's. Buy it...you won't regret it.

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted Libbey

Superb collection.......2006-03-07

If you love or are just curious about the music of Vienna's Strauss family, this is the box set for you. You need look no further. Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic set the standards for the performance of these sublime waltzes, polkas and marches. The sound is fine, too, even though the recordings are not new. This is, quite simply, a magnificent set. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12

A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of "An der schönen blauen Donau" has been omitted.

No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.

The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.

While working at the American Embassy in London in the mid to late 70s, I attended a Supertramp concert and Chris de Burgh was back up. Theatrical lyric brilliance.......1998-12-13

Chris DeBerg has the rare gift for making you think as well as listen. I first heard this album in '74 and little has topped it since. The title cut "Spanish Train" helped me sort out things important in my life and "A Spaceman Came Traveling" reinforced my sense of wonder. The other tracks did that also. Some of the tunes like "Patricia the Stripper" bring a smile and "Old Friend" and "The Tower" provoke feelings that are both emotional and honest. The other five songs are high quality that deserves a listen and a thought.

Songs written by Chris DeBurgh have a special way of effecting the people who listen to them. Sometimes funny, always moving, his lyrics make you think. He takes you to distant places and times. And he makes you enjoy the entire journey. I, for one, wish to thank him for his study of human nature.

But if you were introduced to Chris through 'Lady in Red' to find he is good - I'm sorry, you are wrong, Very Wrong! You sure have missed out on a lot! These are the two albums which have Chris De Burgh stand out as rich & different - unlike any other. Sit in silence, giving him your ears, don't miss any whispers, let each piece of these two albums be a journey - once it gets you - it's gonna really get you!! It's got me for over 16 years...

This is a very good cd, though not easily classified by genre. Excellent instrumentation, biting lyrics, and solid vocals. Love the title track and it's message. Also love, "Super Fine," which reminds me of the old Chambers Brothers song "Time Has Come Today," the mocking "King of Paperclips," and the ballad-like "Girl From An OK Town." One negative, need to dump those background "singers" a.k.a. "The Hipwaders" who thankfully appear on only one song.

Fantastic album.......2004-01-20

This has got to be one of (if not THE) best albums in my collection. What sets it apart from most other music is that it's the lyrics as much as the music that demand to be listened to. Loads of variety in the style and tempo of songs - something for everyone. I can't recommend this highly enough.

The Lady In Red - WHO???.......2003-11-22

Eleven years before his 1986 million-seller "The Lady In Red" both created his fame and destroyed his credibility, Chris De Burgh was making quality music for discerning listeners on this, his superb second album.

The thundering opener, "Spanish Train" is an epic, soaring ballad based on a possible meeting on the Lord and Satan - this created De Burgh's first controversy, as in some parts of the world, this theme caused the song to be banned, and instead the album had to be named after the second track "Lonely Sky" - a great contrast to the opener, an emotional, heart-wrenching ballad.

The next two tracks provide stark contrast again - "This Song For You" is a tear-jerking poem about a soldier fighting in the First World War in 1917, claiming optimism and heroics but at the same time wondering if he will ever get home to see his beloved wife again. This is follwed by the hilarious "Patricia the Stripper" with it's surreal opening line 'Dennis is a menace with his anyone for tennis'.

The undoubted hightlight of the album, however, is the unforgettable "A Spaceman Came Travelling" - a space-age take on the Nativity, which gave De Burgh his first airplay on the Radio, and indeed continued to be played heavily each December until the early 1990s, and even now is still featured on most Christmas compilations.

Absolutely faultless - I defy anyone to listen to this record and not find at least one song that pulls on their emotional strings. Living proof that the underrated ones are often the ones that do it the best.

Before the 'Lady In Red' stabbed him in the back........2003-08-16

I was first turned onto DeBurgh's work by my older brother who was discerning his musical taste half a decade before I was. Chris DeBurgh is most known for his soundtrack score to "Lady In Red" which in someways made and destroyed his chances for exposure. Spanish Train remains to be one of my favourite selections in his collection and my entire library. This album has no traces of that sappy 80's ballad which has become notorious. Spanish Train and other stories is filled with songs that are thought provoking, heart wrenching and fun. An eclectic collection of emotions and a must have for any Chris DeBurgh fan or a fan of "just plain good music".

The pinnacle of the 70's and of his work.......2000-07-08

It is so rare to find an album where one can imagine that everysingle track has the potential to top the charts. Each of the tentracks tells its own story, with really interesting and intelligent lyrics, pure, raw and yet sublime vocals, and the minimum of production. The tracks range from very humorous, such as "Patricia The Stripper" and "The Painter", to Hans Christian Andersen-like sad fables such as "Spanish Train" and "The Tower", to the heartwrenching "Lonely Sky". Be warned however, this album cannot be played as "background music" - it demands, and gets, your full attention in terms of lyrics and music - this is more of a musical storybook. This album should be a centrepiece of your music collection. Go and get it. Those of you new to Chris de Burgh, should expect male vocal folk rock from this album.
