Before San Diego-bred P.O.D. (Payable on Death) landed on a major label in 1998, they were successful indie recording artists. In fact, their Atlantic debut, 1999's Fundamental Elements of Southtown is actually the lineup's fifth album since forming in 1992. And Snuff the Punk was their debut, a heretofore out of print effort now rereleased, remastered and remixed, with new graphics as well. P.O.D. had a strong following in Christian music circles before crossing over with Southtown, and Snuff the Punk shows why. Vaguely progressive thrashy metal with lots of funky rhythms and major hardcore rap influences, the time changes and aggressive musicality of this raw CD, originally released in 1993, is timely in 2000 and beyond. And despite the many religious references, open-minded secular music fans should be able to listen and groove to the positive, heavy tunes that populate Snuff the Punk (the punk being the devil) without feeling preached to. Still, with blatant lyrics such as "abortion is murder," on the "hidden" final track, "Murder," it's very clear where the band is coming from. Snuff the Punk is a winner for Christian heavy music fans. But if you're not a religious type but can mosh to the speedy punk vibe of "Can You Feel It?" and embrace singer Sonny praising God in "Run" ("you're the one who rescued me"), then this debut is a secular success as well. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars p.o.ds first.......2005-05-19

This is P.O.D.s first cd. After being a P.O.D. fan for a while, I realy wanted to try this album. I wasn't let down. Here is a song-by-song review.

Coming Back. This is a cool song with a cool begining. It talks about Jesus coming back.

Let The Music Do The Talking. A standout track with great rapping and cool tornadoe sirens in the background.

Draw The Line. The most popular song on the cd. Not my faverite, but it's still pretty good.

Who's Right? Another good song. It talks about Jesus not favering any race of people.

Get Strait. A fine track that talks about making Jesus Lord over you before he comes back.

Run. Fast rapping and cool bass. It starts out depressing but it ends happy. Check it out.

Snuff The Punk. P.O.D.S first recorded song and my faverite track on this cd. They tell us in this song to "snuff the punk". The punk is the Devil.

Can You Feel It. Not the best but is still worth listening to.

Three In The Power Of One. It talks about having the power to use Jesus' name to beat the Devil and his Demons. The hardest song on the cd.

Every Knee. A fine song with a cool rap part in the middle of the song. It talks about how everone will see that Jesus is king.

Abortion Is Murder. The begining isn'nt the real song. It realy begins a little after the begining. Just Listen to it and you'll see what I mean.

The most Christian cd P.O.D. has released. Somebody said that they curse in thier songs. Well, I rap to these song almost every day and I've yet to hear them curse. That's not to say they don't curse when they're not on stage. But if they do, it's not the end of the world. Nobody is perfect. Including Cristians. If you like P.O.D., try this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry "A Music Fan".......2005-04-27

This CD is pretty good, but that's not what I really wanted to talk about. I hate to dissapoint you "A Music Fan," but the kid is right: P.O.D. do cuss, and I know that it isn't printed but trust me, they do. They have admitted to it in several interviews that I have watched, although they said that they didn't put it into the lyrics list because it wasn't actually part of the lyrics, just a quick background phrase. There are other bands that do this too (omit lyrics because they aren't the main focus of that portion of the song). I won't disagree with you on the Christian focus (because they are a Christian group), but I don't think that swearing should scare off Christian fans of POD. You have to be looking hard for the words to hear them, and it doesn't stand out. They are a good band, so don't let a little background swearing throw you off...it's not the end of the world.

2 out of 5 stars The truth..........2005-02-17

Just a correction to the correction. They do use foul words... "Of course we got the same view on life as most people out there - it's too short and most of the time it's quite a shi**y business." (Circus, July 2002, p.22)

Other instances of P.O.D.s profanity; "f---ing" (Guitar World, Nov. 2001, p. 54); "D--n it!" (Drum!, Sept.-Oct. 2001, p. 86); "p--s us off" (Drum!, Sept.-Oct. 2001, p. 87) "d--n " (Revolver, Nov/Dec 2001, p.63) "p--sed off" (AP, Nov. 2001, p. 59) "half a-sed" (Circus, July 2002 p. 22). And there are others.

This album is ok. Southtown was a bit better. If you like metal there's definitely better albums out there. Imo, this isn't really worth the money. And I don't care about the profanity.

5 out of 5 stars NOT A REVIEW, BUT A CORRECTION OF SOMEONE ELSE'S. . ........2004-04-02

I have been reading the reviews on this cd, because I am very interested in buying it. When I came across this one review that was mostly just a review of P.O.D. itself. Thr reviewer claimed that they had good music, but also implied that they used swear words in their music. I am here to defend them on that point. So, all you christian readers, pleeeasse don't be scared away. Because they DO NOT use any foul words. Just keep reading. . .

One point he made was that in the song 'What is Right', on the record 'Snuff the Punk', Sonny sings "Talking that (what?)". Know what the word was? TRASH. It wasn't anything dirty. It was TRASH. Trust me, I've listened very closely to the music clip.
And the reviewer also said that in 'Rock the Party' of 'The Fundamental Elements of Southtown', Sonny sings ". . .punk - (what?). . ." I own that album, and I've listened to that song many, many times. I've also read the lyrics inside the album pamphlet. They never even say the word 'punk'. To read the whole song, copied word for word from the pamphlet, go to the end of my 'review'.
Another questionable one that I've heard of was in the song 'Boom', on the album 'Satellite'. I own that cd, too. The verse supposedly goes, "I never knew that a kid like me could take his mic around the world and flash his big (a-word)."
Nope. It in fact goes "I never knew that a kid like me could take his mic around the world and flash the big S.D." I actually don't know what S.D. stands for (san diego, maybe, where they came from?).
P.O.D. has never once said a foul word in any of their songs. In fact, just the opposite. They always sing about chritian morals and themes, and even make many referances to 'Jah' and 'Father'. So please, don't let one confused reviewer scare you off from possibly some of the best music you will ever hear (with CLEAN lyrics).

"ROCK THE PARTY" (off the hook)

'We came here to rock this jam - spread HIS love is the master plan. Let this light ignite like a spark - everybody in the party knows who we are. You gotta' get down, dance around, floss your style - P.O.D., guarantee, make it worth your while. Bad vibes, leave 'em at the door - soulcheck'n, housewreck'n, keep 'em begging for more. WE CAME TO ROCK THE PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG - SO PARTY PEOPLE WON'T YA' SING THAT SONG. WE CAME TO ROCK THE PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG - AND KEEP IT LIVE 'TILL THE BREAK OF DAWN. Hey dj won't ya' play that song - and we'll keep dancin' 'till the break of dawn. Keep it live like the way it should - ain't nobody gettin' crazy so you know it's all good. B-boys, fly-girls one time - friend of yours is a friend of mine. Don't bother stopping 'till this jam is through - if you been here before than you know how we do. (MAIN CHORUS)
We gotz to say what we feel - then i can say came real. Don't wanna be caught messin' around - cuz a party ain't a party when it gets shut down (repeat: shut down, shut down). Off the hook with the cutz, that's right - feelin' loose cuz it sounds so tight. Rock da' spot 'till the very end - make sure that you're there when we do it again. (MAIN CHORUS)

4 out of 5 stars P.O.D.: not as polished as now; still brought the goods.......2003-12-22

This album is amazing. I find myself listening to it more and more these days, actually. Clearly, although their songwriting skills weren't as polished and perfected as they are today, as with the quality of the songs, P.O.D. still delivered the real, raw sound that can still be found in their music today.

Kicking off the album with "Coming Back" was great. One of my favorite songs on the album. Sonny repeatedly says, "He's coming back - he's coming back for me and you", then the track increases in tempo.

Other highlights of the album are "Run" {"You're the one who rescued me /...next time I run, I'm running straight to you"} which is about seeing no light in your world then discovering and accepting Jesus Christ in your life and realizing that things aren't that bad after all; and of course the title track, "Snuff The Punk", is sheerly awesome.

"Let The Music Do The Talking" lets the music simply do the talking, and it is also a powerful song.

P.O.D. seemed to have been more religiously blatant in their songs, {"Christ is king"} than they are now. Their music today is still extremely positive, but some of the lyrics are more universal and can be applied to more situations {"Every day is a new day, I'm thankful for every breath I take"}.

Do not hesitate to buy this album. You will find it very enlightening, captivating, and they're a multi-talented band with a lot going for them.

3 out of 5 stars Snuff going up again.......2003-07-22

Snuff started re-improving at this point so this is not a bad ep really, the first track slipt is particulary good so it's worth picking up for a bit of cash.

4 out of 5 stars Good to have the focus back.......2003-01-21

Everyone has their preferred Snuff time period. As much as i respect their early stuff, i enjoy their post-Guns N Wankers the most. Demma was great, Tweet was as good, but then they sort of rutted out with Numb Nuts, not that it was garbage, just a disappointment, as if they'd lost focus and been content to retread old ground. I was afraid to write them off, but then they storm back with this 9-song ep which held fans over quite nicely until the release of Disposable Income (slated currently for a March 2k3 USA release, and NOT on Fat).

Don't mix up this great ep with stuff like Schminkie Minkie Pinkie, which was really just a single with a few odds tacked on. This really holds its own as a great album, even with the 2 "new versions" (Ichola Buddha from Reach, and Night Of The Li's from Snuff Said) and the 2 ending great-sounding live tunes. A few standouts, a couple instros, especially Blue Gravy, and it's a whopper of an ep. Almost like they woke up and decided to put the gusto back into things. And if you're curious, the new stuff (Disposable Income) is a slight turn for the better, getting a little more diverse but still as rocking as ever.

I have long since ceased my amazement at how more people haven't caught on to them, it's really their loss, but Snuff continues onward, seemingly incapable of not getting better. Here's to one of the best punk bands on the planet.

This is probably my favorite SNUFF album, mostly because of the memories it holds. A lot of people will tell you Demmamussabebonk is the best, which is the best choice if you are just starting to listen to SNUFF. hell just buy them both!

5 out of 5 stars This is incredible........2001-08-05

Over the years Snuff has remained my favorite band of all time. I own every single recording they have ever made, and plan to travel to Europe to see them play live. They come out with the most driving and unique melodies, and the music has tremendous energy. This is one of my favorite of their albums, and I recommend Ticket and All You Need.

5 out of 5 stars The best CD.......2000-12-15

The first Snuff stuff I ever brought and it inspired me to buy the rest. It me and got my friends hooked from the first time we played it. If you are in two mind as to buy it or not.. BUY IT!you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars SNUFF's Master Work.......2000-07-21

This cd has gotten me through countless trips to the mountains to go snowboarding. It is perfect. It motivates the hell out of me, makes me smile and happy to be alive. If you dig trombones, hammond organs, guiness, speedy drums, rad guitar work, blended into super harmonies - look no further. This will have you moving in no time.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly standard and unadventurous punk........2000-06-07

When punk rock burst on the scene over twenty years ago, it set out to change the face of popular music. Now, punk is an established musical genre and the circle has been completed.

The style here here is pretty much formulaic punk and if you are into the genre, you will like the music that Snuff turn out. Some of the music here is pretty good. I liked "Iyehl Tiadu Leikh", "Thief" and "Verdidn't" which all carried a little more musical interest than the other tracks. Also, "Arsehole" was quite witty in its way.

The other tracks here are OK but none of them really do anything that hasn't been done by many other bands.

Any music collection that has some punk CDs probably has room for one by Snuff and this one would be as good a choice as any. Recommended but don't expect anything great.

This is snuff at their most experimental and it's quality, the songs go by steadily without a bad song (which can become a token thing). It's good to hear a British punk band release an album so near perfect with there been such a high amount of good bands from california. So pick it up it's good British punk rock.

Is it a departure from their Fat Records material? Hmm... yes and no. It's still Snuff, certainly still Snuff. But this time around they have this sort of airy ethereal quality added in to their intense mix. The album comes off as lighter and more pleading almost. The comedy seems to be pushed to the background on this album as there really are no throwaway numbers here like there have been on their Fat releases. There is some experimentation present (sampling, breakbeats), which honestly doesn't always work, but it's good that they're trying. And the production value makes the tracks really sparkle, which is curious since most people blast Fat Records for making a band "too glossy" though Snuff had to leave to make a truly accessibly sonic record.

There's some excellent tracks here, and a lot of average/above-average stuff, but truly no clunkers which is nice. Well, there is one, and i'm sad to report that the sole instrumental on here ranks as one of their worst. Shame, really. But the "bonus track" at the end is certainly one of the top tracks, strange that it is merely a "bonus" track. I enjoy it, and have enjoyed it progressively more the more i've listened to it. Casual fans might be better off with Demma or Tweet, but the old-timers will be intrigued and (hopefully) pleasantly surprised. A little less gruff gusto, but still great tunes, if you don't mind the wacky quality toned down a bit.

1 out of 5 stars Dime a dozen "punk" band and no nickels coming my way........2006-08-01

These Brits, even though they started in 1986, sound a lot less like fellow 1977 Englishmen "The Clash", "Wire", "Sex Pistols" and "The Gang Of Four" and a lot more like 2004 "NOFX", "Blink 182" and "Lagwagon". That's not a good thing. If you're gonna ape California punk, the bands to simulate are "X", "The Minutemen" and the "Dead Kennedys" not these other chumps.

This is destined for the dollar bin in the not too distant future so you should invest in something infinitely more rewarding (see the first four bands I mentioned).

5 out of 5 stars Not a punk fan..........2002-04-25

but this is one of my favorite albums. There are a couple of throwaway tracks on this album, but for the most part the songs are pure gold. There's a little bit of profanity, but if you don't look at the lyrics you won't understand what they're saying anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Will Quicken Your Pulse.......2001-01-27

"Demmamussabebonk" (try saying that a few times) is a first-rate punk album that builds on itself in a fantastic effort. I like every song on this album, although "Who" is certainly one of my favorites. These guys play it fast and they play it very well, with catchy melodies that will be driven into your head with jackhammer speed. What is cool is that they get this good sound without compromising their punk roots. Conveniently, the CD jacket includes the song lyrics, since a lot of the words get lost in the wall of sound they have going in this one.

Snuff is a very good punk band, with a variety of influences in their music which gives them a diversity to their sound.

5 out of 5 stars I had to get all thier albums after getting this one.......2000-07-17

Any punk fan should check out this band, especially this album and "Snuff Said.. and "Tweet Tweet, My Lovely". They don't overmix their material which almost makes for the sound and feel of a live recording. Great songwriting and the vocalist will grow on you. I own just about everything from this label(Fat Wreck Chords) and these guys are definetly a standout.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2000-03-01

I dont know about you guys but when I think punk, I think of bands like Fugazi, Black Flag, Dead Kennedies, and in generally I have grown to loathe, if not hate newer "melodic" punk bands, such as Screeching Weasel and the like. HOWEVER, Snuff is a whole different story, when I first heard this cd I was thinking it was gonna be streamlined "melodic" garbage that most punk bands are putting out now, but my god was I impressed, never and I mean NEVER have I liked a band that sounds, in the lamest term possible, "poppy" but this cd is a testimony to how change is good, Snuff is now my favirote "new" punk band, with Pinhead Circus following behind loyally, the rest...well nevermind them. Buy this cd, you wont be sorry

    Album Description

In the process of gathering tracks for a greatest hits compilation, it was realized that this 15-year-and-running UK band also had an abundance of B-sides, unreleased material, and rare bonus album tracks. So this double CD package is the best of both those worlds put together with a booklet of stories and photos from the band's history.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is the CD you need to buy........2007-04-07

Contains almost all of their classic tunes including the classic "I think were alone now" If you think of the amount of American punk bands who made it big time, fame and fortune and all (Green Day a prime example) and the amount of great British punk bands who were around at the time who have largely gone unnoticed it realy is a shame.

Snuff were a great band but probably suffered from producing a little too much in the way of music, this CD contains pretty much all you need to know. Some of their great songs such as 'not listening' with a bunch of their classic covers (like the great cover of the Specials 'do nothing') feature here.

5 out of 5 stars a Greatest Hits for a band that never got its due.......2005-10-05

it seems totally bizarre that a 2-disc (not just 1 disc) Best Of has been released for Snuff. it blows my mind in a way. here's a band that had so many great songs, so many tracks that could have been smash singles, so much quality, yet you'd be hard-pressed to find some "punks" that cared. Snuff were milling the pop-punk vein in the early/mid 90's when such well-produced material was in its heyday, but they never really got much attention beyond the odd standout comp track or passing reference to other bands. though i honestly can't think of 1 band over the years that i would compare Snuff to. the vocals are reminiscent of Leatherface, the music of the best pop-punk bands of their day, and the melody/harmonies/hooks that only the rare band like The Clash of Bad Religion ever managed to pull off time & again. as for the tracklisting, it meets standards. one might wonder why only 1 track from Disposable Income (because it isn't on Fat, hmmm?) but otherwise pretty representative. the 2nd disc is fine, but Snuff has a million b-sides (honestly, just ask them) and most of them are that way for a reason. i can't say a 5-star rating means i would rank it with London Calling as greatest album ever made, but it is really 5-stars as a great collection of a great band. i mean, even their one-off side project was a great lost gem of 90's pop-punk (Guns N' Wankers). maybe someday the world will catch up. probably not.

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE 2-disc set, Snuff rules!.......2005-04-07

The first CD is all their best stuff, and Snuff is one of the most amazing yet under-appreciated bands in all of punk rock, so their best stuff is really something. Snuff Said was great, Demma was awesome, Tweet Tweet was amazing, and all those tunes are here along with the best tracks from their other albums that aren't totally essential but still have some killer tunes. Snuff blows everyone away, newer punkers should check them out. As for the 2nd disc, it's made up of really rare stuff so hardcore Snuff fans will have something to look forward to as well I think. I sure did.

5 out of 5 stars Still one of the best!!.......2006-12-09

This CD is not as great as some of the other stuff they have done but still a grat CD!!

3 out of 5 stars Some people are clueless.......2003-05-02

Okay, this needs written to counter a couple of other non-thinking reviewers. First off: comparing this to the Sex Pistols is just ridiculous. Snuff are old-timers in the punk rock game, but any comparison to the Pistols is just staggeringly clueless. They aren't contemporaries, they have nothing to do with one another. It's like saying Sartre is inferior to Socrates. Apples and oranges. Next up: Snuff have horns and organs to complement the early rocknroll/Motown sound that they love so much. There is NOTHING "ska-punk" about them, and comparing them (unfavorably to boot) to bands like Slapstick and Against All Authority is laughable. Not every band with horns is a ska band, and accusing Snuff of trying to be NOFX is just bewildering.

Now, as far as the music goes, it isn't up to Snuff's highest standards. There are some gems here, but most of it is middling material that sounds a bit too similar to stand out. The first half shows promise with standouts like Pixies, Yuki, and Marbles. But the latter half drags with a few tossaway numbers and some indistinguished standard fare. The album sort of mirrors Reach in a way, where the band just seems stuck in a creative rut. Thankfully, their followup EP Blue Gravy would prove more than adequate, and Disposable Income would put them back in the win column with a new sense of freedom and renewed purpose.

    5 out of 5 stars Snuff Rule.......2003-02-25

With reference to earlier reviews of this CD - maybe America just doesn't get Snuff! I've followed every step these lads have taken since the late 1980's, and "NUMB NUTS" is one of their finest.
"EFL VS CONCRETE" is one of the most poignant love songs you're ever likely to hear, " MARBLES" I intend to have played at my funeral, and "BOTTOM OF THE RIVER" just rules, dammit! There ain't a wrong note on this whole album, and for anyone new to Snuff, this is a great place to start>

    1 out of 5 stars Boring........2002-05-27

Numb nuts, eh? I must admit, that's what *I* got after listening to this CD. Snuff are, for no reason I can figure out, very popular in England (kinda like Hi-Standard in Japan), and are selling their fair share of records stateside, too (with the help of the erstwhile Fat Mike, undoubtedly). They're on Fat Wreck, so they're bound to have the NOFX "influence" (meaning they try to write almost every song as if it were a NOFX B-side), but I was surprised at the amount of Leatherface I heard in the first few songs. I like Leatherface, as should any self-respecting punk rocker. Snuff's first few tracks kept my attention, with the singer trying desperately to sound like Frankie Stubbs (which I think just cannot be done). Then the ska-punk kicks in. It's not ska-punk like Less Than Jake or anything, but it's more like a VERY bad version of Slapstick or Against All Authority (meaning they try to be "punk rock" with horns). This just drags the album down incredibly. I would've MUCH rather listened to a Leatherface clone than a NOFX w/horns clone. I thought the English were better than this. Don't get me wrong, there are currently some great English punk bands (with Consumed and Goober Patrol currently topping my list), but Snuff isn't and shouldn't ever be one of them. And don't get me wrong, I DO like Fat Wreck, even though most of my recent reviews (No Use For A Name, Hi-Standard) don't show it -- I just like to hear a dose of originality with my Fat punk. Overall, Snuff has potential to become a good punk band (their singer does have a really cool voice), but I don't think they'll use it, since they've been doing the same thing for as long as I have heard their stuff, and it sells records.

4 out of 5 stars blah blah blah not punk enuff -- bollocks.......2000-05-20

The new snuff album is a non essential purchase. It is an album of songs with their trademark sound. This is not a bad thing. ok it is not a very aggressive punk sound, but just relax and the fun side of snuff will win you round. With too many 'punk' bands having the same so-cal punk sound this album stands out. Just buy it. if you like snuff you will like it.

5 out of 5 stars they just don't get it.......2005-05-16

I remember buying this when it came out. And I mean the original pressing before Fat wreck chords brought it out. Snuff have always been the forerunners of the underground british Punk scene. This is recorded with their original line-up, before they got back together and signed to Fat Wreck chords. Maybe that is the problem here. American kids aren't going to get this. It isn't "strung out" or "no use for a name". These are pretty much all covers. The "jingles" are covers of songs from 80's tv advertisements. Course american kids aren't going to get it, and it is reflected in these reviews. If you are into 80's punk, with a more raw sound, then give this a go. If you ar ebritish an din your 30's, you will recognise the jingles, and I am sure they will bring a smile to your face, although if you are of that age and into old school punk, I can't see how you would have missed early Snuff releases.

Pop punkers will probably hate this. Don't get me wrong, thes are are real sing along songs, but being British, I am sure I wouldn't find it amusing to hear American Punk bands covering jingles from the 80's.

    1 out of 5 stars Bad snuff........2003-07-22

I really do like snuff but i would go far enough to give this cd 1 star as it's just alot of covers and TV advertisments (which are the most annoying things in the world ever anyway) all bunched up together i listened to it once then sold it, word of advice buy any other snuff records just skip this one (the humours even tame).

3 out of 5 stars Snuff sure do love the cover tunes.......2003-05-02

Yes, it's another EP of mostly Snuff covers. Though this was released by Fat Records in 1996, it was actually originally released in 1990. Fun for the fans, but non-essential for anyone just getting into the band, though Snuff are indeed known for their cover tunes.

    As for the covers:
    2) Do Nothing, The Specials
    4) Can't Explain, The Who
    6) Reach Out, The Four Tops
    7) Hazy Shade Of Winter, Simon & Garfunkel
    9) City Baby Attacked By Rats, GBH
    8) and 10) are commercial jingles

Start with the proper albums first, then work your way to stuff like this and Potatoes & Melons (a latter-day covers EP).

    4 out of 5 stars Hassan like...Hassan liiike.......2001-03-22

If you like to yell along to songs, then you're definately going to like this 8 song album of covers. Lots of guitars and lots of singing. These guys play fast and they sing loud AND in key. It's good music plain and simple. Stand out songs for me are Rods & Mockers and Do Nothing.

3 out of 5 stars More covers and fun stuff.......2003-05-02

This is Snuff's EP of mostly covers that was released in 1997 between Demmamussabebonk and Tweet Tweet My Lovely. Again, not as essential as the actual albums, but pretty fun nonetheless.

    Notable covers include:
    3) Shadows Of Love, The Four Tops
    4) Soul Limbo, Booker T & The MG's
    5) It Must Be Boring Being Snuff, Wat Tyler
    8) Magic Moments, Perry Como
    2) Likely Lads is the theme from a British TV show
    1) Rivers Of Babylon is a trad reggae tune

Again, not essential for those just starting to get into Snuff, but fun if you know the band and how their love of cover tunes comes through in these versions.
