With most comprehensive Raspberries' hits collections out of print as of 2005 and the band set to reconvene for a summer tour, Capitol dusts off its tapes and issues this sturdy but unimaginative overview. Those who already own one of the previous best-of sets won't need to spring again for this generous 20 track, nearly 80 minute rarity and B-side-free set. That said, anyone new to the 70s power pop band's Beatle-esque charms will delight in hearing these songs. Eric Carmen's distinctive voice effectively combines McCartney's cutesy charisma with Lennon's more cynical edge, and his tunes, while not as revolutionary or innovative as the Fab Four's, sure make for some hummable retro listening. This go-round adds "I Can Remember," an ambitious eight minute, string-enhanced suite not found on most of the band's compilations and it is a welcome addition. Lesser known but defining album tracks like the enticing "Nobody Knows" share space with more popular tunes from the band's four discs, providing an excellent career summation of the quartet's short (1972-'75) yet productive run. From the opening blast of "Go All the Way," to the closing Phil Spector-styled mega-production of the bite-the-hand-that-feeds epic "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)," The Raspberries' music blasts out of the speakers with a surly, confident pop authority that few other groups--English or American--ever achieved. This was a great album to buy as it is reminiscent of the 80's.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-10-03

I own all the Raspberries CD's and records. This is one of my favorites of all of the more than 400 CD's that I own. There is no better guitar player than Wally Bryson and there is no better voice than Eric Carmen. Also great are Dave Smalley and Jim Bonfonti. One of the best songs ever is GO All THE WAY! The beginning of that song sends shivers down my spine. Great CD!

5 out of 5 stars These Raspberries are Sweet!.......2006-08-08

I love this CD! I had forgotten how much fun they are to listen to, and how talented they were. I'm glad to hear they're touring again, and hope they come around my way. I haven't stopped listening to this since I bought it about a month ago!

    4 out of 5 stars Good 1970s Pop-Rock.......2006-02-21

This type of rock flew against the prevailing musical trends of the early-mid 70s. Not prog rock or metal, but concise, catchy pop songs. If you like The Raspberries and Badfinger, be sure to check out the best of them all, Big Star. #1 Record/Radio City (1972/1973) belong in every rock collection, right next to those other groups, and any others that matter at all.

4 out of 5 stars Raspberries Still Fresh.......2005-12-20

Originally known as "The Choir", the "Raspberries" sounded like a cross between a Beach Boys tribute band and bubble gum pop. There were a couple of exceptions. One of the 70's best make out songs had to be "Go all the Way", self explanatory. "I Wanna be With You" had a catchy guitar riff at its beginning and a quick change chorus. "Overnight Sensation" has the "radio" intro. Most of the rest were solid little ditties but not overly memorable. This is a great little disc for the drive in, the highway, the drive way or the rec room. Its all pretty harmless fun, much like the 70's were to most of us back then.

At about the time that the RASPBERRIES were calling it a day,our teachers were talking about "THE NEW MATH"...some mysterious,ZEN-like thing that would sweep the country in days to come...Surely that is what the folks at CAPITOL were utilizing when they decided, that rather than releasing the FOUR 'berries studio albums, they would issue FIVE best of's (or was it six?)instead.Thankfully, the powers that be at RPM RECORDS don't think like a record company, and as a result we have all four albums on two CD's---GARSH--WHODATHUNK? AAAANYWAY,They sound great, the liner notes are a gas and if you've never heard of the RASPBERRIES that just means that you've never heard the RASPBERRIES.Save time, buy both and discover what a huge fan you really are..That's usually what happens.....

5 out of 5 stars Don't know why there aren't more releases like this.......2004-01-16

I managed to track down the individual Japanese releases of the Raspberries on cd, but still picked up this and volume 2 when I saw them. While the Raspberries are probably not everyone's idea of a big '70's band, their four album catalog is filled with more great songs than any piddly greatest hits collection could ever hope to contain, and it's great to see them get the respect that they deserve. While the debut and "Fresh" were marginally weaker than "Side 3" and "Starting Over" on the companion volume to this set, they've still got some great moments that shouldn't be missed. Eric Carmen's vocal prowess is usually given a lot of the credit for the Raspberries sound, but Wally Bryson's Rickenbacker and Jim Bonfanti's maniac drumming were equally responsible, and at times carried the show. (Anyone who thinks that Dave Smalley was just along for the ride should pick up a copy of the Choir retrospective, "Choir Practice" on the Sundazed label. Dave was a talent in his own right.) Great stuff, but the best part of this collection may be the incredibly detailed liner notes, which are a great read while the cd spins.
Someone should do this with the first four Eric Carmen cd's.

5 out of 5 stars This is More Like It.......2003-10-05

This CD compiles the first two Raspberries LPs IN THEIR ENTIRETY. This is a much better option than any "Best Of" compilation, because many of the bands real gems were not singles and are never anthologized....If you are casually familiar with this band, you will be pleasantly blown away after hearing these first two albums. Nearly every song is fantastic. Eric Carmen & Wally Bryson (check out his previous band, THE CHOIR) were Beatles and Brian Wilson worshippers at a time when this was not fashionable. Their prescient knowledge of and admiration for (at the time) commercial failures like "pet sounds" and the entire Left Banke catalog is obvious, and impressive. This band had a self-conscious, Romanticized, self-mythologizing concept of Pop music as a holy grail, similar to Brian Wilson's idea of "Teenage Symphonies to God". In my opinion the high point of this compilation is Carmen's epic "I Can Remember". (Beach Boys fans, note his not-so-subtle but delightful theft of part of the melody from the little-known Beach Boys song "She Knows Me Too Well".) If you like Emmitt Rhodes, Badfinger, The Left Banke, etc, this is a great CD, get this rather than a "Best Of" compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Raspberries and Fresh Raspberries.......2002-01-27

You can't get in the USA. Hello England, God bless you. It was 1972/1973 and the British Invasion was kicking it in North America. As a child I would say with every request that the Beatles were the Artist of the song. But my homeboys fired the savoy back and stemmed the tide. I actually own the vinyls with the first having the scratch and sniff raspberries smell. This CD gives you their first two efforts as well as history on the liner notes. No scratch and sniff, you missed it by 20 plus years, but the energy and the excitement of the time are captured and -- well many can't play vinyl so buy it and relive the edge as if we are all children again.

    5 out of 5 stars Raspberries forever!.......2002-01-05

This is an awesome cd!If you like great 70s pop and rock and Eric Carmen's solo stuff,or even if you've never heard the man,you might love this band!Think of Melodies in the Beach Boys-Beatles-Left Banke mold and put in some Who-style guitarwork and you'll know where this is going.Volume 1 has the first 2 albums and volume 2 has 3 and 4.I like this one better, but volume 2 is cool.

5 out of 5 stars Long live the two-fer!.......2004-05-05

The second in a two disc set, this killer collection houses the last two albums in the Raspberries all too brief career, Side 3 and Starting Over. I can't say that there aren't moments on this disc that don't come up to the level of the rest, Should I Wait and Money Down being the two that come to mind, but the inclusion of Tonight, Ecstacy, Overnight Sensation, I Don't Know What I Want, and Starting Over on one disc washes over any weak moments that the band might encounter. This is a great way to own the Raspberries albums on cd if you don't happen to live in Japan where they apparently have a greater appreciation for fine music. (It's the only explanation I can think of.)

      5 out of 5 stars Side 3 / Starting Over.......2002-01-27

A compilation of the third and fourth Raspberries releases. Unfortunately the fourth release "Starting Over" was considered the 1974 record of the year at the same time the band disbanded. As with the prior release you are entertained with 19 tracks of RASPBERRIES greatness. The production greatness of Overnight Sensation(Hit Record) even in 1974 is unsurpassed to date! The Smile, Jimmy Ienner produced all their efforts as well as the early Stevie Nicks. He was THE GAME. Thank for stemming the British Invasion and keeping Gator Growl 1973 in check.

3 out of 5 stars "Make you sweat 'til your feet are wet?" C'MON, Eric!.......2000-12-04

Let me venture a guess and assume that you agree that the Raspberries were never really...uh...'cutting edge.' Yeah...'Go All The Way?' C'mon, break out the insulin or something. At least though, Eric, Wally & the boyz never tried to hide the fact that they were in it for the bucks and the babes (ain't we ALL). And, like most everything in the early '70s (the decade that good taste forgot), they were imminently forgettable. Imagine my surprise then, when, in '74 or '75. my guitar player's 13 year old sister wanted me to listen to her copy of the Raspberries' "Overnight Sensation." The opening track on side two, 'All Through The Night' sounded EXACTLY like what Rod Stewart would mutate into several years later in his "Do You Think I'm Disco" dayz. Dig THIS: "...All thru the night/if you play yo' hand just right/I'm gonna make you sweat till yo' feet are wet/now don't say I didn't warn ya" WHOAH Dude! Been spending quality time with 'Exile On Main St,' huh? Wally Bryson's 'Party's Over' is hilarious, and it sounds exactly like nasty ol' Kiss at their naughtiest: "Now I'm older and wiser and a bad criticizer/and I'm crazy but I don't give a..." You get the idea. You have to listen for yourself to hear Bryson's and new bassist Scott McCarl's 'Hands On You' - they must have been SERIOUSLY into some Black Jack. Regretfully, "Overnight Sensation" ain't available on CD, so this will have to do. Buy it, and I guarantee it'll make you feel like you're a senior in high school and you're surreptitously enjoying your little sister's records...

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Raspberries, Part 2.......2000-05-04

Picking up where "Power Pop, Volume One" stopped off, "Volume Two" collects the Raspberries last two albums, "Volume 3" and "Starting Over." This disc, 20 tracks and 70 minutes long, has the Raspberries at their sonic height, although no huge hit singles are here. The closest is "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" which climbed to #35 on the charts before plunging. The band are much rockier and have much more of an edge on this collection than on the first, especially on "Starting Over" and despite having gone through personnel changes resulting in only half of the original band remaining, the music consistently improved over time. Furthermore, the music has aged well, and is just as fresh and crisp today as it was 25 years ago. what a shame that the record buying public wrote Eric and Co. off as "one hit wonders" and "bubble gummers." Tunes such as "Ecstacy" certainly show that these guys were far from being Tommy James and the Shondells or the 1910 Fruitgum Company. Once again, RPM's packaging is immaculate, with an informative fold-out inlay card chock full of biographical and discographical information, and track by track annotations by band members themselves. Do yourself a favor, pick up both volumes of "Power Pop" and give the Raspberries a listen. You'll be hard pressed to find a band which could put 3 or 4 minutes of tape to better use. If you're like me you'll be transported back 25 years and feel the car radio wailing away with some fine Midwestern "power pop."

      5 out of 5 stars ACE!.......2000-03-06

THE two classic Raspberries albums on one c.d! Altogh three of my favourites songs("LETS PRETEND","DONT WANT TO SAY GOODBYE" and "Go all the way" are on the first two albums, i find the last two as more consistent. "ECSTACY" is one of the best songs ever, Carmen vocals are on the highest pitch, Bryson plays like Twonsend, and Bonfaty kills his drums. "LAST DANCE" & "TONIGHT" ARE SUPERB,and Dave Smally on "HARD TO GET OVER A HARD BREAK" is excellent. IT IS very easy to fall in love with some of the songs on "Starting over"(their final l.p.), The theme's song+ "I could hardly belive your mine",are just beautiful 'Small Faces'ish. Scott mCcarl, is a hungry young man that blows everything with "play on" and the haunting 'Rose coloured glasses". Altogh, there are some O.k. songs here and there(Bryson's weak 'Party's over') The overall are some perfect pop songs, from a perfect band

Old Fans Remain, but Many New Ones have Come Along Since for Whom Only Compilations have Been Served Up. The Disc Comes in a Digi-pak Using the Original Front Cover Artwork.

4 out of 5 stars Remastered sound is superb!!!!!!!.......2005-03-31

If you're already a Raspberries fan, you know about these four albums, this being the first. The reason to get these new imports is for the beautiful digipak and the vastly improved sound over any of the domestic releases. I have this and 'Fresh' and i'm counting the days til 'Side 3' and 'Starting Over' are available.

3 out of 5 stars Audacious if Imperfect Debut.......2005-03-27

The Raspberries' audacious idea---for 1972, it was as audacious as they came, amidst the glitter, glam, and prog pretensions dominating rock at the time---was that rock and roll could never be better than if you laid the harmonies of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Hollies on top of the spine-crunching power chords of the Who and Free and the earthquake backbeats of the Small Faces and the Rascals. In their hands, rock and roll was exactly as the Raspberries---and particularly Eric Carmen, their primary songwriter and singer---imagined it, and if you could listen to "Go All The Way" or "Come Around and See Me" and not agree with them, you probably couldn't believe that something like "Go All The Way" cracked the 1972 Top 20 in the first place. (Never mind that you probably got caught completely off guard that a song this overtly about pubescent sex got on the charts at all, never mind top 20.) Either that or you wondered if they'd spent too much time watching the Beatles on the Sullivan show whenever the segment reared its head or numbing themselves with "Bus Stop" and "I Can See For Miles" back to back.

The other members of the group---guitarist Wally Bryson, guitarist/bassist Dave Smalley (rhythm guitarist on this album, switched to bass in favour of Carmen moving to rhythm guitar afterward), thundercrack drummer Jim Bonfanti---didn't quite have Carmen's songwriting chops. But they weren't exactly stiffs, either. Get past the obvious and Dave Smalley's "Rock and Roll Mama" is pretty zippy, and pretty basic. No bells and whistles, just stripped and whipped rock and roll.

The Raspberries had a softer side, too, and it was the side that hurt them more than helped them, if you didn't count Carmen's exquisitely understated "I Saw The Light." (How exquisite? Try it being the Raspberries' best ballad until "Starting Over.") But by the evidence of "Don't Want To Say Goodbye" and "I Can Remember" (if Barry Manilow had wanted to be a rock and roller, this is what he'd have dreamed up) they couldn't deliver a ballad with even half the smarts or the sensibility (like knowing when to shut the hell up already) of their rockers. If you listen just once to "I Can Remember" and think they should have canned the first half and just left the rocking second half intact, you'd have been right.

But they learned their lesson. (How could they not, given "Don't Want To Say Goodbye" was actually their first Capitol single and died faster than a chainsaw massacre victim?) And from this debut they'd go on to create some of the most vibrant---and unfairly ignored---music in what did become known as power pop. Many have become appreciated after their time; few deserved that kind of cruelty less than the Raspberries.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing sound out of Cleveland.......2005-03-07

Occasionally a band stumbles into a sound that is far ahead and behind the times simultaneously. The Raspberries had the fortune/misfortune to have hit upon this combination, being criticized for sounding too much like the Beatles/Who/Beach Boys while taking everyone on a totally unique nostalgia cruise that eventually became a Power Pop revival, but only after they broke up. Despite the fact that Eric Carmen was the one who made all the money, what really made the Raspberries special was the sound of his voice and Wally Bryson's Rickenbacker together. (Not to downgrade in any way the contributions of Dave Smalley's overall musicianship and Jim Bonfanti's tornadic drumming.) The debut album had it's fair share of marginal songs, but it also had some outright classics. "Go All The Way" may be the closest thing to a perfect song for an old dashboard speaker. "Come Around And See Me", while in no way a classic, still has enough attitude to have made every compilation tape or cd I've ever made. "Don't Want to Say Goodbye" and "I Can Remember" serve up some of the finest harmonies and guitar work of the era. The rest of the music occasionally has some charm, but these were the songs that would hint at what was to come next. I'm glad to finally see these reissued, even though I bought the Japanese remasters some time ago. My only question would be, "Why only on import?"

5 out of 5 stars Given their recent reunion, a timely reissue!.......2005-02-08

It's perfect timing for the classic Raspberries albums to be reissued individually on CD at last--given their recent reunion and successful concerts in Cleveland and Chicago. Prior to this, these albums were available only as a set of two each on two CDs. Now anyone who's a fan of power pop but somehow missed this band or has not yet purchased their complete albums on CD has the option of doing so one at a time. This one is a must--although it doesn't rock as hard as later ones would, you can't afford to miss classics like their BIG hit "Go All the Way" and the eight-minute time-morphing masterpiece "I Can Remember." Buy it, listen to it, love it--then watch for news of a concert tour. I've been to all three shows so far, and after 30 years, this band is rocking more than ever.

Few bands in American music history have been as successful -and- as critically battered as these midwestern masters of early '70s power pop.

I was a fly on the wall in West LA when Wally Bryson (in the company of Choir standout Dan Klawon, Naz drummer Thom Mooney, et al) showed up to take another stab at fame with Motown in '76. Otherwise, I'd have missed the boat pretty completely.

Much as it was between Kieth and Mick, it looked to me like the creative tension between Eric Carmen's teen heart throb sensibilities vs. Bryson's hard rock instincts (and gonads) was the heat in the oven here. Pubescent mid-Atlantic, midwestern, southern and plains boys -and- girls seemed to find it irresistable, even if the Left Coast more or less ignored it.

One of the other reviewers here is right about some of the better stuff being missing and available elsewhere. For my money, I want to hear Dave Smalley do "Hard to Get Over a Heartbreak" and Eric do "Hit Record." Nevertheless, this is a good place to start... and especially if you want hear Bryson's astonishing guitar work.

Wally never confirmed this for me, but I hear Badfinger's Pete Ham aplenty, as well as Townshend, Graham Nash and others. (The first thing I ever saw him play -- and sing -- in rehearsal, however, was Kieth Richard's "Crazy Mama" in open G... and it -was- The Stones, vocally and instrumentally.) A carefull review of "Go All the Way," "Tonight," "Ecstacy" and "I'm a Rocker" ought to confirm his chordal and riff-ripping mastery of that '58 Flying Vee.

Bryson went on to play with three of the four Young Rascals in a band called Photomaker, and, fortunately rejoin Eric and the rest of his bandmates in the 'Berries a few years ago on the nostalgia circuit. This CD, however, displays him at his impressive, early best. The first five chords -- and what follows in the next 30 seconds -- of "Tonight" will confirm that for anyone.

        3 out of 5 stars Not a good option.......2005-08-04

The music rates 5 stars but the song selection is not so good. Just do yourself a favor and get Power Pop, Volumes 1 and 2. Just buy those two CDs here and you have ALL four Raspberries albums. Pretty simple.

1 out of 5 stars Another RASPBERRIES compilation?.......2005-05-09

First off let me say that I am one of the biggest fans of Raspberries you will ever find.I was fortunate enough to see them twice in the early seventies and I already have my tickets for the reunion show in New York this summer (BB KINGS Club in July, 2005). I have followed all of Eric Carmen's solo efforts including the imports that were not released in the US.(Special thanks to AMAZON for making them available). I bought Wally Bryson's follow up albums when he was with FOTOMAKER and TATOO. Outside of all of my original albums I bought RASPBERRIES BEST OF, the old Capitol album, when it came out on CD. I bought another BEST OF just a few years ago that was being offered with more songs. I bought the BEST OF ERIC CARMEN shortly after which included a number of RASPBERRIES songs. I bought all of the RASPBERRIES CDs when they were offered as two-fer double CDs. I even bought the six song "almost" RASPBERRIES CD from their web site (It was very good). Now along comes this "Remastered" BEST OF. I can't see myself buying these same songs for the forth or fifth time. It includes nothing new. There are a few unreleased tracks from the bands early albums and quite a number of good quality live and rehearsal recordings that have been circulated over the years that could have been included to attract old fans as well as new. I don't see the point of this album. It offers nothing new. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars The Raspberries "White Album".......2006-02-11

The storied third and final album by the Raspberries original line-up is reputed to be the product of tensions within the band. Eric Carmen's artistry, both as a songwriter and singer, was taking up a lot of air, and apparently leaving insufficient breathing room for the other group members to be heard. The result is an album whose songwriting is divided between three members (Carmen and guitarists Wally Bryson and Dave Smalley), but unlike the Beatles' White Album, there's still a lot of interplay between the band members. Carmen rocks hardest, and Bryson and Smalley add country flavors on a pair of tunes, but the result still sounds like a group album rather than a band splintering mid-session.

Carmen opens the album with the crashing power-pop of "Tonight," sustains the electricity with "Hard to Get Over a Heartache" and "Ecstacy," and contributes the melodramatic mid-tempo Beach Boys styled "On the Beach." Bryson's "Last Dance" begins as a Zombies' styled mid-tempo number before effortlessly segueing to a fiddle-based country break and closing coda. Smalley's "Should I Wait" leans on a similar country-rock vibe with the band providing superbly tight harmonies. Bryson's bluesy-rock "Money Down" brings to mind T. Rex, and Smalley's "Making it Easy" is a fine mid-tempo rocker. Rounding out the track list is a Carmen/Bryson co-write, "I'm a Rocker," that makes good on its title.

Whatever tension was present in the studio, the resulting album is as good as any in the band's catalog, and an essential entry in the power pop canon. This belongs on any shelf that's got The Beatles, Big Star, Flamin' Groovies, Plimsouls, Rubinoos or Matthew Sweet. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

        5 out of 5 stars Guitar-charged Raspberries!!!!!!....finally sounding right........2005-06-04

This is the most rocking Raspberries album. All of the best guitar solos are on this album....the guitars in general sound GREAT. From 'Tonight' to 'Hard to Get Over a Heartbreak' to 'Ecstasy' to 'I'm A Rocker'..if you don't know all these tunes, you need this import version of Side 3. These latest reissues are in beautiful digipaks and the sound is awesome. If you've only had their greatest hits over the years, it's time to get these 4 Cd's.

5 out of 5 stars The Raspberries run ragged.......2005-04-11

All was not well in the Raspberries camp for the third album Side 3, and it shows somewhat in the songs. While album opener "Tonight" and fellow classic "Ecstacy" may have sounded like the Razz of old, the rest of the album felt kind of splintered in an "every man for himself" kind of way. Pity. The well definitely hadn't run dry either from a creative or potential standpoint. I've often wondered how the next album, Starting Over, may have sounded if the original band hadn't dissolved in a flurry of animosity after Side 3. Whatever the case, even the in between tracks sound pretty good here, especially Smalley's "Making It Easy", Eric's "On The Beach" (the best Beach Boys tune the Beach Boys never did,) "Hard To Get Over A Heartbreak" and "I'm a Rocker". Solid power pop and it's a shame it's taken so long for this stuff to see the light of day again.
