More like Van Nuys after 9 p.m., actually. Despite pretensions to goth greatness, Los Angeles's London After Midnight are probably best described as journeymanlike. On this reissue of an album that first bowed in 1996, LAM turn out about an hour or so of slickly produced death rock--nothing that will offend the ears, but nothing that pushes the envelope either. Still, ringleader Sean Brennan is a capable vocalist and songwriter and gets a decent groove going on the driving title track and the slower, anthem-like "Kiss." Psycho Magnet will no doubt find appeal among those who've kept a torch burning for Bauhaus and its spinoff projects. --Steve Landau

4 out of 5 stars Dark, sometimes angsty, and always a pleasure........2007-02-01

This is, to be blunt, a very good album. It is a good stepping stone into the world of Darkwave music; It has the dark moods, deep synths, heavy bass, but is still pop enough to catch the ears of someone who isn't familliar with the genre.

That being said, the same attributes that make it great also make it tiresome after an extended period of listening. It is the kind of album you will absolutely adore for two weeks, then be forced to put away for a month or so.

All in all it is a good buy, and I personally recomend it for anyone with an interest in darkwave, gothrock, new wave, post-punk, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing..........2007-01-11

I had never heard of "London After Midnight" until some 2 months ago, when a good friend of mine told me about them, and presented me to one of their songs, "Sacrifice"... I was just flabbergasted!!

"Sacrifice" is actually a song from their "Scenes..." album, but "Psycho Magnet" is SO superior in every possible way! I don't really think any of my words can do this album justice. If you're into the post-punk gothic music scene odds are you already know them; but if that's not the case, please, PLEASE, get this album any chance you get and listen to it... and listen to it... and listen to it... and listen to it...
You owe it to yourself and, mark my words, you won't be disappointed!

1 out of 5 stars So this is supposed to be Gothic music?.......2006-07-09

I bought this CD after hearing a lot of fervor about this band all over the internet. When I put it in my CD player, at first I liked it. But after a few more listens, it started to throw me off. Something about the vocals really irritated me. I can't stand those sort of depressed drag queen sounding vocals, and I really can't stand the whole club-type vibe the thing has.

There where some guitar leads that at first sounded OK, but before long they became bland and boring. The keyboards had these moments of shrillness that made me cringe, like in the title track. And the lyrics....oh god, the lyrics are like more of that depressed crap that I am so sick of in music these days. I don't want to hear some guy whining about his sordid life or his tattered libido or his political beliefs or whatever it is. I want to be entertained, not brought to a depressive emotional state or preached to about some political belief.

Which brings me to one more thing about this CD, or rather its unfortunate lack of a follow up. It was released in 96, and since then the bands leader has been promising a new CD since 98. I read this in an interview, and I had to laugh when I went to the bands site and saw all the posts about how the new CD will be released "soon", many of which date back for years. So where is this CD? Sounds like your leading us on Mr. Brennan.

The final straw was when Sean Brennan himself admitted to keeping the band alive as a vehicle to push his political beliefs. I don't like Bush either, and I urge people to be involved in politics to some degree, but I don't feel like hearing about it in my music. This is entertainment, not a political conference.

I know I may get some backlash for this review, but it's only one persons opinions. I'm just warning others who may feel similar to me that this band and CD may not be for them.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT....[just brilliant!].......2006-03-03

Alright. I heard about London After Midnight several years back and I am thinking, "what the f--k?", why don't i just go out and BUY this kickass CD? So (FINALLY) i order it off of here and sure enough it arrives on Feb. 3, 2005...I was IMMENSELY BLOWN AWAY when I popped the CD in the player. I read some of the lyrical content, it is SO gothic, dark, depressing, and deep that (right away) I knew it fit MY taste perfectly! I am what people like to call goth, and so I guess you would say this is JUST what the doctor ordered for me! Some of the lyrics on here are hard to take, since they are sooo deep in sorrow, doom, depression, and lust. But you have to remember when buying this CD that (most of the songs on here) work out nicely like gothic poetry...and the mixtures all click together to form one sensational (if forgotten) alternative goth rock album that will remain a legacy in the dark underworld of this particular genre. A solid 10/10! AND, a must for anmy goth fan!!!

5 out of 5 stars Angst-filled Fun.......2005-03-01

I love this album. I don't take any of the lyrics seriously, but it's just terribly amusing. Their vocals remind me a little of Bella Morte, but the songs are pretty energetic and angsty. It's dark enough to make me happy but not freak me out.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD of local music.......2003-11-04

I don't know what the other review was listening to when he wrote that review or what he was smoking. What I DO know is that the best music is an evolution of what has been done before. In this case, Echo Grove DOES show a lot of it's influences... unapologetically. In fact, that the previous reviewer could make such comparisions to the Beatles (of all bands) is an admission that these songs have merit. Echo Grove is an ORIGINAL rock band that doesn't hide from its influences. A band that isn't putting on any pretenses or trying to be different just to be different. Lyrically and musically they pull this CD off with talent and feeling. Pick up a copy!

1 out of 5 stars take off of many other artists.......2002-06-16

In most of the songs you can tell the writer has taken bits and pieces of many other songs and has put the music into his own words. You can pick out music from other groups such as Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, the Beatles as well as others. The words may be original but the music is not. The lead singers voice is out of tune and raspy and hard to listen too in most of the songs but the musicians themselves sound pretty good. Save your money.

London After Midnight has a great sound to them without sounding like every other "goth" band. This album is rich and full sounding, and still catchy enough you'll find yourself singing in the car. A must buy!
