Pitty Sing, a four-piece out of New York named for an evil cat in a Flannery O'Connor short story, is part of a new breed of indie bands set on reviving the angular, bizarrely romantic mood of late-'80s new wave and post-punk. The group, led by broody front man Paul Holmes, has a few tricks up its sleeve, though. While influences loom large, flipping from Morrissey on darker tracks like "Go Cry" to Psychedelic Furs and Simple Minds on less tortured numbers, Pitty Sing puts on a brave front and charges forthright into the current decade as well. In Holmes' distinctly British vocals, retained despite a stateside upbringing, edges of the melodic crooning bands like Keane have made their signature transfer. This debut is a strung-out affair that meanders too close to the weird at times (the unnamed track 13 is a Darth Vader-ish spoken-word interlude), but it's promising, too: Naughty lyrics ("Radio") and funny ones throughout flesh out a disc not just for the new order of sunken-hearted nostalgics. --Tammy La Gorce

3 out of 5 stars Nice Debut..........2007-01-07

Pitty Sing frontman, Paul Holmes, could stand in front of a drum kit and keyboards and do an exemplary impression of Tom Chaplin (Keane). Mr. Holmes' singing voice is as compelling as it is melodic. Comparisons to Keane would be the most contemporary comparison one hears in this unmistakenly 80's retro-feel band (to ignore the 80's influence is to botch the review). So much so, that this 80's officianado can think of at least a half a dozen bands of reference. And while Rock elements are laced throughout their debut CD, it definitely slants towards Pop. Think a little more Naked Eyes than The Cure. The percussion reminds me of Ocean Blue. If you like Depeche Mode or OMD, you will likely take to Pitty Sing. The arrangements are complex and clever enough to enhance each succesive listen of this CD. It is a fun romp through pleasing arrangements, hooks, and vocals, punctuated by very capable percussion. This is worthy of a listen and a place in your collection, not to mention a radar alert for their second effort.

3 out of 5 stars Better than..........2005-06-16

With the newest crop of ....(searching for label). I guess It's New Wave influenced except it's really not. Anyway... alot of the new bands that are trying to depart from run of the mill sound have been pretty lackluster. Extra credit for trying to go against the grain but not much content. Pitty Sing does rise slightly above the rest but they still lack that certain quality that is hard to put into words but is very apparent once you hear it. There are some good moments here but the lyrics are a bit shallow and some are downright silly. That's ok, this is their first full CD and it's forgiveable. The other weak points are a lack of creativity and some strange vocal stylings by Paul Holmes. For the most part Holmes has a very pleasent voice but every once in a while he sounds like he's trying way too hard to manipulate his vocals and it's really annoying. I suppose Pitty Sing has the potential for doing some great stuff. For now, I'm pretty happy with some of the music they've done but I'm not holding my breath for their next release.

4 out of 5 stars A little surprising.......2005-05-26

My roommate picked this CD up before I had heard anything by them. It was pretty decent but nothing stood out. Then he put it on in the car the other day, and I was captivated.

Now some of these songs just have too many "I'm sad and it's the 80's" sounds to them. Their single, for instance, makes me cringe sometimes. But there are amazingly wonderful gems on this disc. "CTWYL", or "Chante The Way You Live", starts out with a string sound that grips my throat and heart and forces me to listen. The lyrics are stunning, and then I think to myself, "Perhaps this band deserves more credit?"

That's what you'll be thinking too, the moment Pitty Sing enters your life.

5 out of 5 stars A random buy, and I'm glad!.......2005-05-25

So I saw this sitting around at work, and I just decided to pick it up. It looked interesting, and I had heard the song "Radio", and I liked it, but wasn't like totally all over it.

Let's just say that "Radio" is not the best song on the CD. It's one of the songs I skip over when listening to the others.

The OTHER songs on this album?

True gems. Really awesome and his voice is really good. I like the way it sounds, and it fits the music well.

My favorite tracks have to be "We're On Drugs" and "CTWYL". Mind-blowing lyrics, and the music, with strings and everything is just simply amazing. I never expected something this great from just a random CD.

Highly reccomended.

Oh...it's rock. Kinda like Kasabian, has that old feel to it, but it's gooooood stuff. Really.

5 out of 5 stars a breath of fresh music.......2005-05-12

Thank God. Until today, I haven't come across a CD to praise since my last review in Feb (and not for lack of trying). I'm already in LOVE with this CD in 3 days. No need to compare Pitty Sing to bands that they weren't old enough to be influenced by, although I do hear hints of the music I loved in the 80's. NOTHING is being re-hashed here. It's completely unique, contemporary and refreshing. Thank you Paul Holmes for your incredible voice & for sculpting this work of art that I will appreciate for a long time to come. LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome band!.......2005-02-21

I can't get enough of this band! I hear some 80s influence, but the sound is also unmistakably modern. The hooks and melodies are my favorite part of this cd. The band do what they do really well, with a tight rhythm section and some really cool keyboard work. It's relentlessly catchy and often danceable. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers here, this is something fans of U2 and Morrisey should check out in a hurry. Pitty Sing do a great job of fusing the old and the new with skill and emotion. I give this my highest reccomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Must have!!!! .......2005-01-18

A refreshing new twist on the music front. Not what you would expect from a "new" band. They have been compared to many bands that I have listened to and enjoyed yet they have a sound all their own. This is a must follow band that is going places.
Every one of these guys is incredible in his own right but together they are awesome! Check out the video on the web site and you really gotta love the mystery that surrounds the drummer. Well done!!! BUY IT!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth Buying.......2005-01-06

These guys are phenomenal. If you want a CD you won't take out of your CD player for weeks... this is it. Trust me. I have amazing taste in music... I promise.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best CD I have heard in my life (recently).......2004-12-06

Nobody belts it out anymore, you know, but this dude can SING. I am talking really unrestrained, BIG crooning, like Bing Crosby on PCP... No, that's not quite accurate, but dude definitely has some lungs on him. Ethereal music; the effect is that of being swaddled in silk. The Franz Ferdinand comparison is not only unwarranted, but slighting.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amaaaazing.......2004-12-05

This is what i've been waiting for. I'm so sick of being dissapointed by everything that comes out especially in rock music and this just blew me away. I was at a show with my friend to see another band on the bill with pitty sing. Although I was bored and sick of the band I came to see I luckily stuck around for Pitty Sing out of curiousity. Immediately I felt like I was witnessing something historic. I imagine it was same feeling seeing Bowie back in the day. I went looking around the venue for a CD but a rep informed me that the band had forgotten the merch. Upset, but still very excited, I picked it up elsewhere and it hasn't left my cd player. I'm even thinking about getting some more copies so I can leave them in my car and at work. I didn't think something this special could occur in the perpetually digressing music scene of today. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
