5 out of 5 stars Papa John Creach RIP "Filthy" Classic.......2007-05-13

The music recorded in Creach's Filthy album is music that will live forever: a true Classic album. A copy of this music is extremely difficult to locate and we feel very fortunate to own at least one of his CD's. We urge all music lovers to secure a copy before it is impossible to buy. This is truely soul inspiring 'happy' music!

5 out of 5 stars All-levels post-graduate seminar on the jammin' blues .......2005-01-09

I first heard this album (vinyl days) on my first day at college when my roommate pulled it out of her stack of LP's and put it on the turntable. She had won it from a radio contest and hadn't listened to it much. When "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning" came on, my jaw just dropped and I realized that until that moment that I had known NOTHING about what music could be. It was the introduction to a life-long love of the blues, acoustic and electric. Listen and love it, folks -- this is a post-graduate seminar on bluesy jammin' music! PS -- my 5th grade Sunday school class last year also loved "Keep Your Lamps" when we studied the parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins.

2 out of 5 stars Only okay.......2002-03-29

Starting off with the promise of "John's Other", an original by funky violinist Papa John Creech, this album slides into mediocrity pretty quickly. "Never Happen No More" is a great song, but is over busy with harpist Will Scarlett and Papa John competing for space around Jorma, Jack and drummer Sammy Piazza. "Been So Long" is a great piece, but was tinkered with in the studio a bit. "I Want You to Know" is just another blues piece, and Papa John just overpowers the rest of the band on it. "Keep Your Lamps" is okay, but Jorma doing it solo on Double Dose knoock all other versions in the dirt, and again, Creech just overplays.

And maybe that's my problem with the whole set: Papa John. Don't misunderstand, I think he added a distinct flavor, ESPECIALLY on Burgers but on the live electric sets (this and Classic Hot Tuna Electric) he gets annoying and repetitive after about two songs.

If you're just discovering Tuna, I still recommend Burgers or the first Hot Tuna Live as starting points.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Tuna's best album.......2001-11-28

I remember the first time I heard this on vinyl in 1971 or 72 it just blew me away. I have other Hot Tuna albums and Jorma albums but this is the best. This is my all time favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Best sampling of 70's Hot Tuna.......1999-06-09

Diverse compilation of studio & live favorites from the Acadamy of Music days of the mid 70's. Hot Tuna, one of the best jammin' rock & roll bands in the universe, is captured live in true form. Great for first time listeners, and favorite of hard core TUNA aficionados! Also, contains the best version of "Come Back Baby" ever recorded!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD that accurately represents what HOT TUNA did live........1998-08-07

Excellent piece of history. Hot Tuna is still around in some form but they haven't sounded like this in a long time. Papa John Creach screaching and Will Scarlet wailing. The question is, what took so long to get this on CD and more importantly, where's the rest of the show?? Hot Tuna never played for less than 3 hours.

5 out of 5 stars Papa John was the Rock Father!.......2007-04-02

I don't know if Papa John's back up band was weak, or he was just too
good? After decades of giggin' jazz clubs, and classy joints, he became
an overnight sensation when "Hot Tuna" "found" him. I'm glad they did,
don't get me wrong. But the man had a career before becoming an
overnight sensation. I mean from his "debut' on the "Hot Tuna" album
"Burgers", he caught my ears right away, believe me "Hot Tuna" needed
him more than he needed them. And from the following four albums he
built up much street credit with them crazy eyed white people, the
"Papa John Creach" album where he played with anybody and everybody
who is anybody in the music scene in San Francisco, his album "Filthy"
where he showed that funk/jazz/old standards and rock could live in the
same album cover, to "Playing my fiddle for you", where he rocked out a
little more, at the expense of the funk, and the CD were talking about
currently, "The Rock Father", and the album lives up to the billing,
very funk/rock fusion, from "Travlin' on" to the "Orange Blossom Special"
this disc was something special, I would not suggest this album for you
pale, effete, minimalist, eurothrash types, its realisim, warmth, and
in your ear soul/rock will give you heart palpatations. I really wanted
to give this disc a four, because of the weakness of "Midnight Sun" the
backing band, but Papa John Creach pulls it through with his astounding
musical presence and ability.

5 out of 5 stars Remember, Papa John was the ROCK FATHER!!!!!!.......2007-04-02

Yeah, I bought the album, owned the pre-recored cassette tape, and finally
the CD, and yeah its that good, I immagine that this must of been the
play date of the century. Just like a bunch of kids with a new playmate.
Here you have the creme de la creme of the San Francisco music scene
of the 1970's. You got, just to drop a few names, Grace Slick, John
Cipollina, Joey Covington, Sammy Piazza, Carlos Santana, Jack Casady,
Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Kantner, Jerry Garcia, and a long list of lesser
known talent, but talented just the same. If that wasn't enough, the
Los Angeles String and Brass sections. It is all worth the work put into
it. All these kids trading chops with the new kid in town, Papa John,
what didn't make it on the album I would like to hear. This album is
part of the 4 album deal Hot Tuna gave Papa John to play with them.
I'm glad they did, because this CD is a true finished jem of the 70's.
A few of the tastier tid bits on the CD like "Plunk a little Funk", or
the steller "St. Louis Blues", "String Jet Rock", "Soul Fever" plus a
bevy of well performed chestnuts by Papa John. I would suggest this
CD to any one with the constution to be able to withstand a good time.
If you are nervous by nature this CD is not for you.

5 out of 5 stars Violin like you've never heard it.......2003-04-23

Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, Bluegrass. Papa John is the master of all.

Over the Rainbow is one of my favorite cuts of all. Danny Boy comes in at a close second.

Papa John has the violin down to its last fret. You will nowhere hear the violin played with such expression and mastery even with Prokofiev, Bartok or even Tchaikovsky.

There are no words to describe the elegance and virtuosity of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful!.......2002-08-19

I had this album back when there were albums. Somehow, I lost it. Thank God it's now on CD. Creach just blew me away the first time I heard this album--especially his rendition of "Over the Rainbow." This is great stuff. Too bad so few people know of him.

5 out of 5 stars A Long Search Ended.......2000-10-15

I had this album almost 30 years ago on vinyl. I have kept it even though I haven't had a turn table for years. I have scoured "record" stores for this album on CD and even tried to have it ordered for me several years ago. Papa John's violin playing is unbelievable. String Jet Rock does just that ... rocks! Papa John's Danny Boy will bring tears to your eyes. This is the premier rock violin album of all time. I can't wait to listen to this truly great album again. (Mrs.) James Sain

5 out of 5 stars a blues violinist of unparalleled mastery.......1999-03-02

I was captivated by Papa John's violin mastery when first hearing this album in 1971. On special occasions I still play the original vinyl 33 rpm disc. Imagine my delight that a CD is available and that I can save my original without fear of scratches. The playing is as adroit and the sound as imaginative as ever. Some of Papa John's friends who collaborated on the album went on to become very famous: Grace Slick and Jerry Garcia to name two. It occurs to me that the sheer joy and exhilaration of Papa John's playing is infectious and is why the Blues are as popular as ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars He's the Violinist Man.......2003-05-29

Papa John Creach was the backup violinist for Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship for many years.

He was "discovered" at the age of 50 and passed on by way of a heart attack at the age of 76. With this album, he is timeless.

For some of the cuts on this album, he does his own vocals and there are background singers around him. Unlike his first album, "Papa John Creach", there seems to be over production at work in this album.

Nevertheless, in "Stardust", "Fiddlin' Around" and another, Papa John and his "fiddle" is the lead soloist.

As I have said before, Papa John can do with a violin what Izhak Perlman can't.

This album explores blues, jazz and even disco.

Add it to your Papa John Creach collection.
