Hunter's Final Album for Columbia Records was a Balls Out Rockin Affair Where He Eschewed the Polish of his Previous Two Solo Albums and the Mott the Hoople Records in Favour of a Loud, Hard Rock Sound that Took No Prisoners. Some Feel it was Just Too Much, While Others Feel this was his Finest Hour.Customer Reviews:
Ian Hunter: Overnight Angels.......2007-04-26
The ballads/quieter songs here are atypical of Ian's melodic style and still have some echoes of older, better known material. Nothing stands out with the so very open and honest/heartfelt lyrics and impact of, say "Irene Wilde", but these are still good songs from Ian!
The title track and "Justice Of The Peace" (upbeat and fun!), "Miss Silver Dime", and "Wild And Free" (another rocker) are among my favorites here. And the additional vocals on "Justice" reminded me of "Marrionette".
Many of us are well aquainted with live version of "Cleveland Rocks" played on classic rock stations, so the bonus track "England Rocks" is a gem to get here. I liked the CD on it's first listen, but after two or three playbacks, it became one I was glad I found.
considering the circumstances...........2006-03-04
All the tracks were recorded and ready to be mastered when the horror of horrors to any artist hit. The studio burned down taking all the tapes with it. Check the LP for the 'veiled' fire comments. In essence, the Lp had to be re-recorded and hence Ian's little documented 'breakdown'. Ian isn't a big fan of this LP, possibly the history, the production from Roy Thomas Baker (my guess)or the songs.
My fave on this one is 'Broadway'. A true Mott roller coaster of a song--soft-loud-soft-huge sound and finally the end.
There are a number of great songs on this LP---Overnight Angels, Golden Opportunity, ..Little Star...
I hate the production--too bright and not enough bass--typical of RTB.
Imagine the songs without RTB involved and it's a better LP.
Overnight Mott's.......2003-08-04
Three days after recording started the house that Hunter had rented for his band's entourage to stay in, caught fire, completely gutting the building leaving all the occupants escaping with their lives but little else, including musical instruments (shades of "Deep Purple's `Smoke on the Water'). Both, producer Roy Thomas Baker and engineer Gary Lyons, were hospitalized and were still feeling the effects of their ordeal during the recordings that followed. So it is not surprising there is a bit of a dramatic edge to all the songs.
The set opens with 'Golden Opportunity' in barnstorming fashion commencing with a lengthy instrumental section, which takes various interesting twists and turns allowing Slick to show off his guitar playing was slick by name and slick by nature, before settling into the main tempo and pattern of the song. As the guitars bring the song to a shattering conclusion, Roy Thomas Baker shows why he was in such demand as a producer. He wonderfully goes seamlessly from one song into another by going straight into the Hunter lyrically acidic piece ' Shallow Crystals', Ian Hunter's criticism, laid firmly at the door of some unfortunate in his past.
Next comes Hunter's Tour de Force. In the title track one of the finest and heaviest tracks ever laid down in the studio, the opening creeps in with some muted power chords and some sonic drumming before the whole band comes crashing in with Hunter ranting over the music.
"Charged by the light of some Mariners lantern,
Spitting out coals with triangular sparks,
Can't you hear the scream of the Overnight Angels as they play.''
The song rocks along in fine style with plenty of guitar pyrotechnics from Earl Slick and studio wizardry from Roy Thomas Baker as he switches the guitar and vocals from one speaker to another. No wonder the song was taken as the main theme to the horror Movie 'Asphaltnacht' .
Immediately following this was the beautiful 'Broadway' Hunter's ode to all that is good about the music scene in America. After this the album's single comes rollicking in, a nifty little song showcasing the abilities of Peter Oxendale It was selected as "Sounds" single of the week back in those heady days of 1977. '( Miss) Silver Dime' would also have made a fine single apart from it's obvious storyline, which would of made it impossible to get any airtime on the Government controlled Radio stations.
'Wild 'n' Free' with its pace of a runaway locomotive and its marked return to 'Brain Capers' era "Mott the Hoople", is the song that demonstrated to the emerging New Wave of Punk Rock that their debt to Ian Hunter and "Mott the Hoople" was un-questionable, and they had a long way to go to catch up with Hunter's biting, cynical lyrics, and wild, raunchy Rockers.
'The Ballad of Little Star' is a loving tribute to Native Americans. 'To Love a Woman' closed the album in uncharacteristic style for Hunter being a simple Pop/Soul flavored love song, a very pleasing ending.
Columbia Records have just seen fit to re-release 'Overnight Angels' and a fine job of re-mastering they have done too, giving the original recordings an extra shine and clarity. Plus, tacked onto the end as a bonus track we get the last ever recording by the Overnight Angels, 'England Rocks'. We all know what a little monster that turned out to be, when it was changed to `Cleveland Rocks' and put on Ian Hunter's following album "You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic". It was later used as the theme song to 'The Drew Carey Show', but here you get it in its original brash short sharp shock version.
"One of Pattaya's leading Rock 'n' Roll Bars once designed one of their famous T-Shirts using the brilliant artwork by David Oxtoby used for this album".

an ear bleeder with a few good songs.......2003-07-04
Hunter has said the whole album was recorded too high for his voice and his vocals definitely sound strained on most of these tracks. In fact everything about my earlier version of this cd sounds strained, harsh and shrill. Unpleasant sonic overload is everywhere. Hopefully, this new remaster can correct some of that--I'm not sure how much of the blame rests with Roy Thomas Baker versus the mastering engineer.
However, there are some good songs here. The title track (admirably described by reviewer Brent) is one of the most ambitious songs Hunter has ever attempted. "Broadway" is a great example of the sort of ballad Hunter has always excelled at, and "Miss Silver Dime" is another winner (though all could stand to be re-recorded). "To Love A Woman" is one of the more unusual songs in Hunter's catalog, a breezy pop dittie reminiscent of Rod Stewart's "Killing of Georgie" with a bombastic chorus.
Most of the other songs are pretty unremarkable (except for "Justice of the Peace" which is remarkably annoying). Adding "England Rocks" as a bonus track is a nice touch which is just enough to nudge my rating to 3 stars and a modest recommendation.
An underrated, unappreciated masterpiece.......2002-02-14

Not one of Ian's best albums but has its moments.......2006-01-23
The original album graphics are included Baker's production hides some of the flaws of the material and Hunter rocks out on most of the tracks with Earl Slick on guitar, Dennis Elliott(of Foreigner and the guy that manned the drum set for Ian's classic first solo album) on drums the material never wants for lack of energy. The arrangements are tight. There are plenty of flawed tracks like "To Love a Woman' but, on the whole, the energy rescues even the lesser tracks and Baker's production fits right in with the material.
There aren't any lyrics included in the Sony/Rewind budget price reissue although we do get the full album credits and a reproduction of the artwork for the interior of the gatefold sleeve.
