One Big Step Forward.......2007-05-21

Although I seem to be in a minority, I felt that Finn's previous work before this release was a major letdown. That album, Try Whistling This, lacked worthwhile melodies and the production was surprisingly stale considering a Neil Finn project.

From that standpoint, I was not expecting too much from One Nil. Such fears were unwarranted because this is where he should have continued from Crowded House's Together Alone, their finest release IMHO. It was evident straight from the opening track, The Climber, that his originality and knack of writing melodic and yet warm tunes (even those organically produced) was back. Rest of the Day Off follows, giving the opening stages a splendid flow that remains mostly throughout the record.

The production is less dense than TWT and one senses that Neil has regained his confidence which probably took some beating during the final stages of Crowded House.

Highlights include Wherever You Are, Turn & Run (a duet with Sheryl Crow) and Into the Sunset. The only tracks not up to par are Don't Ask Why and Elastic Heart but those are in no way songs one reaches out for the remote for.

This album is definitely among Neil Finn's best work and hopefully a signal that TWT was only a minor sidestep of his consistency in producing among the best work in pop music in recent years and the future.

One last note, the US version, dubbed One All, is even better.

After four Crowded House albums producing a large songbook of classic songwriting, Neil Finn parted with his band to pursue a solo career. Since Crowded House, Finn has taken an even more personal and sensitive approach to his colourful songwriting. The first solo album "Try Whistling This" was a darker and more sombre alternative to Crowded House and "One Nil" (re-released in America as "One All") is without any exaggeration, probably one of the finest albums of the last 20 years or so.
I do not make such a statement without a number of reasons, and I'm certainly not measuring this albums sheer greatness by commercial success.
Craft, craft and craft, this album from the first moments to the close is an intensive marrying of lyrics, chords, melodies and unique instrumentations creating a complex and beautiful canvas of musical imagery. Neil's chord patterns are just as inventive as his attention grabbing metaphors. This album is filled with classic opening lines such as "Let's go climb up on the roof, in the twighlight" (Secret God), "There's a light overhead, overhead" (Turn and Run) "I've never been to heaven but it feels alright, and I woke up this morning with a permanant smile" (Don't Ask Why) or "Wherever you are, it's 3 am and I'm awake, imagine the light upon your blue transparent face", transparent indeed is a fine description of this album. The songs are 3 dimensional and like most of Neil's music they pull the heartstrings with their warmth of expression and evocative imagery without ever being sentimental. And that's a big plus, it means Neil can write a love song or two to his wife like "Turn and Run", or "Wherever you are" without a cheesy, soppy result!
This album has a very natural and organic feel; it's an uncanny pleasure hearing each song emerge. Through a simplistic chord progression and melody the music is filled with such colour, variety and a haunting energy, this is simply the work of a master songwriter who paints pictures with his voice and mould shapes with his chords.
When I say this is one of the finest albums around, I do acknowledge this albums sheer subtlety. It's not a spectacular concept production like Floyds "The Wall" or Queens "A Night at the Opera." But it doesn't need be - at all. Neil Finn matches Lennon and McCartney's finest songwriting days, and Finn at his finest (I dare say) defeats their post Beatles solo work. If not, Neil makes Noel Gallagher look like a teenager trying to write a song, he even makes the great Radiohead look like they are trying a bit too much to be progressive. Neil Finn doesn't need to try; his musical language speaks all for itself. I hope he will continue a steady stream of wonderful solo albums. This is his best work yet.

More music of transcendental beauty.......2002-11-10

I believe that's how one reviewer once described Crowded House, and if anything, Neil sounds a bit more Crowded House-y on this solo project than he did on Try Whistling This, if only for the presence of Mitchell Froom on some tracks. I vastly prefer this original over the remixed, reordered One All US release for many reasons, not the least of which is that is flows better. One Nil is an album about fidelity and maintaining a relationship, and while Don't Ask Why is a bit of an oddball in that theme, I've always liked it. Much more central to the theme, if indeed one takes this as a concept album, is Elastic Heart, which has some lovely brass work (think Together Alone) and lyrics that speak to the concepts of forgiveness, compromise, and reapprochment - it's not a date song, it's a marriage song, and it's one that means a lot to me. The whole album is highly recommended.

I want to love this..........2002-10-25

...but after a year or so of spinning this in my player, I just can't get into it like I have Neil's other work. After listening for so long, I can't help but think these are good songs severely stunted by misguided production. In so many places on the CD, there are beautiful turns of phrase or melody where some change in instrumentation or tempo or pause or whatever would be perfect to accompany them, but all of these songs are locked in tempo, with no room to breathe and no change in mood or style--supposedly there are real drummers keeping time, too, but you'd think it was drum machine the way it comes off. It's all pleasant enough-sounding music, I guess, but very vanilla in my opinion. I have no problem with the raw material; Neil Finn is a terrific songwriter. But the presentation really bothers me. If I had to contrast, I would say some of the tracks would have been more successful in a "Finn Brothers" (1996) format, intimate and stripped-down. Here it's sing and play to the metronome beat. I paid import price to pounce on this CD when I saw it. It's kind of disappointing. I know, make my own record...That said, even so-so Neil is better than a lot that's out there. He deserves more attention, but newbies won't fall in love with Neil Finn through this disc. Crowded House spoiled me, perhaps...Anyone out there in cyberspace even halfway agree with me? :)

the best.......2002-09-12

I've had this disc for a while, but it only recently made its way into my car CD player. That's when I really listen. And oh, boy, did I listen.

One late night after a party I just got zapped by 'Secret God', mesmerized by the dissonant harmonies that repeated over and over. And it's not even my favorite track - that would probably be 'Driving Me Mad'. But they're all great. Not a single skipper, as they say.

Finn is a great songwriter - I can't think of any better.

A rare five-star recording.......2004-09-01

Warning: buy "One Nil," not the remixed, re-sequenced, track-adjusted American version "One All" (the latter pales by comparison). Now, onto "One Nil." First, this album is a grower, so stick with it: in time, when the nickel drops, the rewards are many and often astonishing. Some of my fellow reviewers obviously didn't take the time. When I first picked it up, I headphone'd it in the wee hours about five nights in a row, not getting it, but feeling that it was going to take flight if I stuck with it. It did. From the sonic hammock of "Rest of the Day Off" to the intimations of mortality hanging off every note of "Anytime" to the catchy, shuffling "Driving Me Mad" to the arch (in a good way) soaring finale of "Into the Sunset," there's not a track-to-skip on this album. Beautiful, spacious mix. Neil's unimpeachable vocals. There's almost a sonic concept to the sound of this album...like heat haze shimmering above the pavement on the horizon...something like that. Again, though, be warned: "One All," the American version of this release was damaged beyond recognition by a half dozen or so remixes that flattened out the sound; also two key tracks were replaced by not-so key tracks, and the track order was changed to the album's detriment. Where "One Nil" is five stars; "One All" is, at best, 3.5 stars. That's how important the mix is, folks.

Doesn't get better than this............2003-06-25

Neil Finn....brilliant musician. One Nil, in my opinion, is much better than the US release entitled One All. Sure, there are a few songs that didnt make One All, and vice versa, but One Nil just sounds better. Still, you can't go wrong with Neil Finn...and is amazing live. If you want an album that you will treasure, get this one, and Try Whistling This by Neil Finn as well...and check him out live if he comes to your area. Worth every penny.

It took some time but I love it..........2002-06-27

I bought this album in April of 2001 on-line as an IMPORT. I listened to it probably twice all the way through in the period of one year. It wasn't as "catchy" as "Try Whistling This". I felt so bad not being able to get in to it, being a Neil Finn fan and all. Then earlier this year when "Seven Worlds Collide" came out I bought that. Loved it. Realized these same songs were on One Nil. I wanted to kick myself for not giving it a better chance. But it is my current favorite album.

He's done so much better.......2002-03-22

I can't say this is a truly bad album, just that he's got a lot of better work out there. It comes nowhere close to the beautiful complexities of "Try Whistling This" or "Woodface"; in fact there are very few complexities on this straightforward album. But even being straightforward, it isn't nearly as catchy as you might expect from Crowded House's driving force. I guess the songs are sweet enough, but without much substance to make me want to to come back for another listen. American fans searching for a fresh dose of material from Neil might be better advised to look at the interesting re-works and covers on "Seven Worlds Collide."

I AM STARTLED TO GIVE A NEIL FINN RECORDING ONE STAR.......2002-03-14

Well, I bought four new CDs last night in hopes of spicing up my forthcoming vacation with some tasty new gems. I really enjoy some Split Enz, some Crowded House; and Neil Finn's TRY WHISTLING THIS and concert were really quite good! I knew it was only a matter of time before I finally gave in, spent the extra bucks and bought his second album ONE NIL as an IMPORT. And I, like others, was shocked that the U.S. labels hadn't picked up the bloody thing -- until I heard it!!

I'm sorry, but this music sounded really, really bad to me. Accidental participants of my CD preview were also aghast. Many songs we couldn't bear to listen to all the way through. Thus, sadly the American labels haven't picked this up for good reason? I never dreamed I would hear something like this come from Neil Finn. Now, to be fair, the last two songs were much better than the rest of it, but they were still very mediocre and not worth a purchase (at any price). Even his (otherwise) gorgeous voice - possibly my favorite male voice in popular music - is barely performing and *not* pleasurable to listen to.

Please, may I simply advise the potential buyer to *atleast* take a preview listen of this disc before you buy it. Some fans seem to love it, but not all of us!

More brilliance from New Zealand's greatest national treasure. I don't know what's more criminal - the absence of Neil Finn on domestic radio, or the fact that One Nil has not been released in the US. Guilty on both counts. Buy this now, fans of intelligent, hook-laded pop.

Some of the best of the Davis cycle.......2004-01-11

Of the three boxes of reissues form Colin Davis' pioneering Berlioz cycle, this is probably the one I would not want to be without more than the other two boxes. But I suppose that's because I dearly love more of the works in this set than the works in the orchestral works box or the opera box. The major works (La Damnation de Faust, Requiem, Romeo et Juliette, and L'Enfance du Christ) are in the eyes of many unmatched by any other recordings. And many would say that about the orchestral songs too. My only quibble is with some of the track editing in La Damnation de Faust, my favorite item in the box. The recording is analog in origin, much to its credit personally. Several track changes sound like old tape-joins though. Clean it up Philips! These classics deserve better treatment.
Documentation is minimal of course.

Limited edition set of Sir Colin Davis doing Berlioz.......1999-02-15

A complete review of this set will follow at a later date. What I wish to highlight here is that this set contains Davis's reading of Berlioz's Requiem, though it is not listed as part of the contents in Amazon's description. (I've submitted a suggestion that it be added.) Those genuinely interested in Berlioz's sacred music will probably know this recording, which is justly famous for its dramatic power, and for a depth that Davis, above anyone else, consistently achieves in Berlioz. The Davis recording has recently gone out of print as a single item and is now available only as part of this set, which is limited edition. Practically, that means most record stores will not be able to order it, and that the set may not be available for long. These considerations, as well as Davis's peerless interpretations of the other items in the set, make this collection valuable indeed. Berlioz fans would regret protracted indecision.

Both Neil Finn solo albums (excluding a live album) on one CD. Try Whistling This came out in 1998 after the breakup of Crowed House, while One Nil was the followup in 2001. For his first solo record, Try Whistling This, Finn made an intentional effort to distance himself from Crowded House (hence the title; daring listeners to find catchy tunes), dabbling with new textures and collaborating with Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie on some songs. After that more experimental approach, One Nil is a return to the song-based approach of Crowded House, although Finn's aiming for more subtle material here; it's not overtly commercial and instead, these songs are more personal, often touchingly about his love for his wife.
