It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Modest Mouse started sounding like a real band. For the longest time, singer-songwriter Isaac Brock seemed to exist solely to defy the established rules, forging forward on sheer momentum and ingenuity. Even Pavement looked relatively ordinary in comparison to the band's early releases like 1996's This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. But on Good News for People Who Love Bad News, the frontman sounds like he's finally touching the earth, and the band--minus founding member and drummer Jeremiah Green--follows suit. A relaxed mood prevails, not so much in volume but in attitude. On the follow-up to the group's 2000 major label debut, The Moon & Antarctica, big sloppy melodies battle it out with brass on punky epics like "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty." The lyrics are simpler, the arrangements tamer, but the vitality remains. The prevailing mood is that Modest Mouse has pulled off something extraordinary here: a well-rounded, lovable record that doesn't sound anything like David Gray. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars One hit song does not a sell-out album/band make.......2007-06-20

Yes, "Float On" was a smash hit. Yes, it's pretty poppy. But what about "3rd Planet" and "Gravity Rides Everything" from "The Moon and Antarctica"? To a (possibly much) lesser extent, what about "Heart Cooks Brain" from "TLCW" or "Dramamine" from "This is a Long Drive"? You see, MM have generally had more "mainstream-palatable" songs on their album, and just because this one was a hit, does not mean they sold out.
OK, you've heard that rant before, but not in such an *ahem* eloquent fashion. Now onto the review.
As usual, the hit is by no means the best song on the album. Other songs like "The World At Large", "Ocean Breathes Salty", "Bury Me With It", "Bukowski", "The View", and (ESPECIALLY) "The Good Times are Killing Me" (which, by the way, if you did not know, was remixed and tampered with by one of the best bands of all time, the Flaming Lips) not only give "Float On" a run for its money, they take the money and use it to buy cigars.
I mean, the fact that supposedly hardcore fans are nitpicking this great album because it has freakin' "Float On" on it more points out their own stupidity and narrow-mindedness than it does the band being sell outs.
So, in conclusion, if you want to keep your rather dubious "indie cred", do not buy this album. If you enjoy Modest Mouse as much as anyone should, however, than do.

5 out of 5 stars "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?".......2007-04-19

I am becoming more and more of a fan of this kind of off-beat, different music. I guess I can't help myself. I liked the single "Float On" when I heard it a few years ago, but again, I didn't pursue the album until later. Good News is interesting because of its contrasting moods. The plucky guitars and catchy harmonies conflict with the cynical lyrics that attack religion and certain kinds of people. The vocals range from pleasant sounds in the background to aggressive, near shouting tirades. The singer isn't all that great at singing, but he's great at using his voice to convey any mood he wants.

"The World At Large" starts off the album about as happy as it gets, with flutes and meaningless vocals in the background. "Bury Me With It" is about as angry as the band gets musically, though not lyrically. That would be "Bukowski", which is completely pleasant musically. "The View" sounds like kind of like dance music. "Satin In a Coffin" uses prominent drums and older sounding instruments to create a very interesting sound. "The Good Times Are Killing Me" finishes off the album while perfectly illustrating the conflict of sound and message, and it's produced by The Flaming Lips, which is cool. Modest Mouse is a unique band, and a good one at that.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I heard this on the radio........2007-03-27

The first time "Float On" came across the radio I almost $#!? my pants. I fell in love with Modest Mouse after I heard "Dramamine". Not immediately, but after listening to the "Long Drive" record repeatedly, the band grew on me. And grew. And grew. Now 8 or 9 CD's later they're still growing on me. I'm glad they've found radio success and hope they are able to keep producing new music.

My highlights for this record include Bukowski, Black Cadillacs, and Satin In A Coffin. If you truly love the band and aren't just in it for the image, you'll love this record. The whole album is great. Yes, even Float On.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you're an old school MM fan, listen to it with an open mind.......2007-03-12

This album is the worst Modest Mouse album, in my opinion, but it's still really great. That's the beauty of Modest Mouse.

What I love about Isaac Brock is that his music reveals a lot about who he is and what life has taught him. Good News for People Who Love Bad News is no exception.

The only track I don't like on this album is "Satin in a Coffin". After hearing a live recording, which I love, I can't stand to listen to the one on gnfpwlbn. It lacks passion and intensity.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another masterpiece from Modest Mouse.......2007-01-21

These guys have released so many great albums that the expectations are always incredibly high for their next one. And every time they release one, I listen to it, and I'm a bit disappointed, and I say to myself, "it's good, but it's not as great as the last ones."

Then I listen to it more, and it begins to grow on me, and soon I can't stop listening to it and I'm raving, "This is their greatest album!".

That's what happened to me with this one. Didn't blow me away at first. Now? I am like an addict. As soon as a song ends I need to hear it again immediately. And I can't stop listening to the album, and I don't want to listen to anything else....

I give it huge props, even though they diss my beloved Charles Bukowski.

Roots music wasn't exactly a hot prospect in 1972, which might be why the blistering guitar-centered blues on Luther Allison's debut record didn't garner the respect it deserved at the time. Though it's unfortunate that he's no longer around to appreciate it, it's good to see that Allison is finally being recognized for the Chicago West Side master that he was, as a single spin of Bad News Is Coming surely enough proves. Things get started with a hard-stompin', guitar-squealin' rendition of the classic Willie Dixon tune "Little Red Rooster," followed up with the riff-rooted "Evil Is Going On," also by Dixon. Another standout is the title track, a slow, moody piece with a perfectly bittersweet inflection. Then there's the considerably upbeat version of "Dust My Broom," which manages to dust off a hoary standard and make it sound brand-spanking-new, all while showing off guitar pyrotechnics worthy of Jimi Hendrix. This issue of Allison's debut also includes some worthy tracks that weren't on the original release. All four merit a listen, but particular attention should be paid to Allison's take on Freddy King's classic instrumental "The Stumble," which also features some admirable piano courtesy of Paul White. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Incredible take-no-prisoners blues album.......2007-02-25

I can't say too much that listening to the samples above won't more eloquently say for themselves..stripped down, visceral, authoritative blues. If you like blues, this one's a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Albums.......2006-12-31

I don't want to review this cd as much as I want to implore you, the person reading this, to treat yourself and buy it. Out of the 100's of cd's I've owned and listened to, this is the most soulfully smooth music I've heard. This album is an unknown classic. Allison's voice rock's, his guitar work stings, the piano is perfect. Track after track this cd is either perfectly sexy, painful, funky, or rocking. Why this guy wasn't hugely popular is beyond me. Buy this cd and then buy it for your friends. They'll love it too--Peace

5 out of 5 stars Awesome blues..........2005-12-08

"Bad News Is Coming" was Luther Allison's debut album and from the first track, (his version of Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster"), he EXPLODES with an intensity that is refreshing every time I hear it. He belted out his vocals in a raspy, impassioned wail, and his guitar playing was just as searing. This should have been a smash, although the blues market was drying up by the time this was released in 1972 and it ultimately didn't sell in big numbers. Luther Allison himself is quoted in the liner notes as saying that he got lost in the shuffle when Motown moved from Detroit to L.A. Luther Allison was an amazing guitarist and unfortunately remains underrated. Songs like his own "Raggedy and Dirty" are perfect examples of how he could play the blues over a funky groove and just sound plain DIRTY. I don't know how else to describe it. He didn't hold anything back on this album. Also notable is the piano playing of Paul White, who has some great solos on this one. If you are a fan of the blues and haven't heard Luther Allison, this CD serves as a good introduction to this unsung performer.

5 out of 5 stars Luther Allison on Motown.......2005-11-11

An incendiary guitarist and all-around performer...I first came across Allison's "Serious" back in the mid-80's, and the power of his voice and that nasty slide guitar had me hooked from the start.

I first dug up a dusty vinyl copy of this Motown release, and was struck by it's sound. Generally simple arrangements, but they conveyed a young Allison's determination. As far as I know, he was the only blues artist on Motown, at a time when the label was still in power on the production of soul/R&B hits for the Supremes, the Temptations and the like.

Mostly standards, Allison tears through "Little Red Rooster," "Evil Is Going On" and "Dust My Broom" and makes them his own. The funky "Raggedy and Dirty" remains one of my favorite personal tracks, and I detect a little Jimi Hendrix in there somewhere.

On this CD, the bonus tracks are a great addition, Allison's version of "Sweet Home Chicago" and songs like "Take My Love" really filling things out.

A great document on the early Allison. His roots weren't just in the blues, as his career would bear out. I can't say enough about this one, it's special in more ways than one.

5 out of 5 stars The "Soul Fixin' Man" lives on!.......2002-05-12

This album is simply a classic. A must have for ALL music fans across the world. I'll finish this review with this:

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

This is absolutely one of my favorite albums of 2004. I own this on CD and vinyl and decided to sell my CD and buy the DualDisc instead. I love the fact that I have a digital version of "I Got It All" now! A 5.1 surround mix would have been nice, but the stereo mix on the DVD side still sounds better than the CD-quality audio. The music videos are a cool thing to have, and the animations from the website are just a gimme.

Overall, if you don't own this album yet, pick up the DualDisc. If you do own this on CD, sell it and upgrade to the DualDisc you won't be sorry! It's definitely worth the extra $2.

I only gave this 4 stars because of the absense of a surround mix.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Spinal Tap..........2007-06-29

Well, Spinal Tap was a great movie but in all honesty, this is every bit as good, if not funnier.
Not only is the humour incredible, but the music is fantastic, a mixture of classic british hard rock & the comic strip gang's trademark humour, (Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmonson, Nigel Planer & Peter Richardson).
Don't miss it!!!

4 out of 5 stars don't play it again...or i'll break your guitar.......2006-05-27

i had vague recollections (only vague, it was 20something years ago ffs) of bad news' cover of 'bohemian rhapsody', mainly the 'vocals' and the line 'fat b@stards, i've just playe the wrong chord'. so while nostalgia can sometimes be a real eye opener in that you realise that things back then were 'cr@p, no matter what the lookback bores say' (mes), this and the comic strip (from which bad news was spawned) boxset is quite a nifty investment.
the premise is simple enough, an aspiring metal band are shown first on a rockumentary in their search to make it big, and then reforming after the acrimonious (and public) split. the cd features some of their 'tunes' (let's just call it 'pub rock, shall we, although the 'ghengis khan' solo and incomprehensible war cries always has me in stitches, as does the intro to 'bad news') and some hysterical studio 'banter'. as always with comedy it's the timing and reactions that make or break it - witness for example colin's reaction to the 'ugly woman' jibe.
despite the fact that they were apparently unaware of each other's existance you can't help but draw comparisons with 'this is spinal tap'. music, especially rock, is ripe for parody. in its favour bad news has a distinctly english flavour to it, helped no doubt by the presence of three of the young ones. indeed, its got a similar type of anarchistic/ toilet humour with plenty of profanity and you can see flashes of 'bottom' in the interaction between vim and colin. i also feel it stole a march on spinal tap - compare the 'cashing in on xmas (dub)' with the admittedly hysterical tap dvd commentary and you'll see what i mean.
another accolade is that i get the feeling bubonique ripped off 'ghengis' for 'truck turner'. high praise indeed.
"oh go and fetch the paper from the newsagent, daisy!"

5 out of 5 stars The English Spinal Tap for all us posers!!!!!.......2005-08-30

There was a great debate about this movie in 83 when it first came out. Apparently they and the creators of Spinal Tap conceived this idea completely independently, had no contact with the other, and created both movies simultaniously. Spinal Tap, while much funnier (although the older I get the more depressing it is!) overshadowed this movie project in the US and Europe, but remains a hidden gem.

As this is British comedy, the humor is far more subtle but still a scream! The Young Ones take on new personas as a go no where heavy metal band touring in England. They've got everything from the scanky, unwashed denim jackets to the red spandex pants to the mullet wigs! And Rik is there too, who moonshadows as a white collar banker by day, then when the documentary crew comes calling he charges in, puts on his wig and metal T shirt while still wearing his suit pants, black socks and wingtips! I laughed so hard I cried! I'm just a poser too!

And they even made a hilarious comment, when the hip chick rock journalist asks what they think of a-ha. They make vomitting noises (I LOVE a-ha, thank you very much!). The Monsters of Rock concert was a real scream, as they had comments from other English metal luminaries like Ozzy and Lemmie - but they were probably so high they didn't know what they were talking about! Like all great bands, they lack the discipline, maturity, and sobirety to go on, so they split up right on the verge of success. A band is a marriage, and most are bound for divorce court. For those about to rock, we salute you...

5 out of 5 stars So Funny!.......2005-06-11

If youve ever watched and enjoyed the young ones you'll love this, you can tell a lot of it was just the guys goofing around in a studio and there are some classic quotes. I gaurantee that if you buy this you will force your friends to listen to it and it will spread, well, like bad news i spose! Exellent, natural comedy at its best.

      Album Description

From the director of "School Of Rock" and "Dazed and Confused" comes this summer's smash comedy hit.

Classic Rock meets the new school. Beloved tunes from Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent sit alongside new tracks from Senses Fail and Phantom Planet.

Baseball has rules. Meet the exceptions. Grizzled former professional baseball player Morris Buttermaker (Billy Bob Thornton) is recruited by a strait-laced lawyer (Marcia Gay Harden) to coach the Bears, a woefully inept Little League team. He's got to find a way to drive this gang of 12 misfits to a championship against their hated rivals: the Yankees and their overbearing coach (Greg Kinnear). From the director that brought you "School of Rock" comes a hilarious 2005 homage to an irreverent 1976 comedy: "Bad News Bears."

Soundtrack Album Producers: Richard Linklater and Randall Poster Executive Album Producer: Ralph Sall for Bulletproof Recording Company. Inc.

5 out of 5 stars Dazed & Confused meets Baseball.......2005-07-28

Richard Linklater was the perfect director to remake this classic comedy, because Linklater knows that music needs to move a movie. 'Bad News Bears' has a soundtrack that goes right up there with 'Dazed & Confused' and 'School of Rock'. This soundtrack pays homage to the origional films score from 'Carmen' and pays tribute to the happening 70's with some awesome classic rock tunes. Artists include John Fogerty, Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent. There are also so great covers of some well known classics inlcuding a decent cover of 'Wipeout' by underground sensations Phantom Planet. And of course to entertain the mainstream fans a song from Simple Plan. If you don't feel that the movie is up to par with the 1976 classic I beleive if they would have made a rock soundtrack to the origional these songs would have surley made the cut.
