Album Description
The debut album from Cut Chemist, formerly of pioneering underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5, The Audience's Listening is evocative of an era when sound enthusiasts put out records for the adventure of it, not as a vehicle tied to hit singles and booty-shaking videos. Using a turntable, mixer and computer to create the songs, this gifted DJ has conjured an homage to what is possible. Varied, uplifting and unexpected, rooted in hip-hop but leaping into new sonic territory, The Audience's Listening offers musical magic created by the alchemist known as Cut Chemist.Customer Reviews:
Intelligent album!.......2007-07-03
FINALLY the DJ actually said who the artist was, and I bought the album immediately! This was a good decision on my part!
It is an intellegent composition, one that will not yield hits on the radio, but is brilliantly crafted. It requires actually listening to it several times to get into it, but the "effort" is worth it! And you won't get sick of hearing it on the radio every hour like so many albums!
If you have any interest at all in DJ compositions, this one is a must have!
fine turntablism.......2006-11-22
let me tell you, i first heard this album performed live by the cut chemist himself. and it got me shakin', same with the whole audience. so if u get a chance to, go see it live... it was awsome.
so therefore i decided to pick up the album on vinyl and compact disc.
its a good album, especially if u like a mix of hip hop, funk and jazz. Djs should respect it because the turntablism aspect of the album is up to par, nothing new or totaly mind blowing, but creative nontheless. if this is your first album listening to cut chemist, its a good one, and i think even for the cut chemist fans, its apreciable work. its fun, creative, and gets you moving. i thought however there lacked a bit of energy from the MC on the track 'whats the altitude' on the CD. however, live, he rocked it.
its a short album, but its fun, and its short enough not to be too redundant, long enough to enjoy.
get a copy, its not a let down... if youre looking for something completely mind blowing, maybe this isnt your pick, but thats why i didnt put five stars. fine album all the way through.
The robots... are coming..........2006-08-28
Cut Chemist's "The Audience's Listening" appears to be one of the third category, though the turntablist/DJ/Jurassic 5-er does give electronica and hip-hop some novel twists in his first fully original album. But at the heart of it, it sounds like Chemist is simply dabbling in whatever he enjoys most.
"Start remembering what you hear," says a cheerful interviewer, before a patchwork of samples inform us about the DJs of the future, about music, the first annual DJ convention, and a lot of dogs barking. By the time you're finished with the intro, your brain will be in the right state for what comes next. ("People get ready... the robots are coming!")
He retreads familiar ground in the energetic percussion-heavy "My 1st Big Break," before switching over to a new sound -- bossa nova. Gypsyish guitar playing an energetic live tune, with a sample of Astrud Gilberto playing softly halfway through. It's an exquisite, ethereal tune that shows that Cut Chemist can do all sorts of music.
Lest anyone think that Cut Chemist has lost his edge, he dabbles in some truly weird stuff (a phone conversation done entirely with samples and scratches), sharply surreal hip-hop, and shimmering electronic numbers that sound like an arty sci-fi film. Cut Chemist dips back into bossa nova once before, before finishing up with the dense, catchy hip-hop of "The Audience Is Listening Theme Song."
Cut Chemist has done some pretty brilliant work with remixes and the "Brainfreeze" collaboration with DJ Shadow, so expectations were high for "The Audience's Listening." But the best way to listen is without expectations -- while it's neither groundbreaking nor brilliant, it is a beautiful, funky little album.
One thing it has from the beginning is a relaxed, laid-back feeling feeling. Cut Chemist shows that he can do everything from spare acoustics to dense, intense melodies, dabbling in a little of everything at least twice, and trying new sounds without trying anything too new.
It's not groundbreaking, but from the sound of it, Cut Chemist was just trying out whatever existing sounds he liked rather than striving for something new. The basic melodies are loaded with extra sound: lots of vinyl scratches, odd samples (glass breaking? dogs?), razor-sharp hip-hop beats, and everything from a cowbell to gypsyish guitar to waves of smooth synth.
Hymnal and Thes One make rather surreal cameos on a pair of songs, while Edan and Mr. Lif appear on the frenetic hip-hop "Storm," blurting out a breathless rap that gets stranger with every word.
Cut Chemist may not have broken new ground with "The Audience's Listening," but the result is still a fun, weird, and thoroughly likable album. Definitely worth a listen.

Howard Werth plays an amplified classical guitar. He's quite
good, however his voice is an acquired taste. When Keith Gemmel
plays the flute, it gives a Tull-ish feel, and his sax playing
reminds me of David Jackson from Van Der Graaf Generator. The
rhythmn section is above average. Prog-Rock fans in search of something different may find this of interest.

Album Description
Still ironically considered new artists, Fertile Ground has seven years, countless performances, and dozens of recordings to their credit. After 2 years of extensive touring, writing and recording, the group has unveiled their fourth full-length masterpiece, simply entitled Black Is the highly-anticipated CD, is the sequel to the acclaimed 2002 release Seasons Change. This fourth full-length album, which will be internationally released and supported by an extensive world tour, contains a range of ethereal classics such as the title track, Black Is , a soulful jazz waltz ballad full of affirmation, the joyful noise of Live In the Light; and the introspectively revealing song Naked, which gives us an example of how to truly connect with and reflect each other.Customer Reviews:

Fertile Ground's style encompasses jazz, reggae, samba with a little hip hop for good measure. And what can I say about Navasha Daya's voice? This vocalist sounds a lot like Phyllis Hyman to me, but far from being a soundalike, Daya is definitely a unique talent. She is a commanding presence not just because of her powerful set of pipes, but she has a way of engaging the audience that makes you want to watch this group all night. And the band does not play second fiddle to her voice because they can all hold their own. That is the hallmark of a good group -- when the musicians get to shine as much as the vocalist. As good their live show is, the CD is even better because you get to hit repeat as often as you like.
"Black Is" features 10 tracks along with some interludes and an instrumental. The title song is a love song to Black people that speaks to inner beauty and strength and exhorts the listener to remain steadfast. "Changing Woman" is a song that upholds the woman's various roles in life and is billed as a tribute to a native spirit. This is a balanced CD with some uptempo music that will make you groove, as well as some slower thought-provoking tracks.
This is definitely music for those of us with more on our minds than the latest dance step and material goods. I recommend it.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27
But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!
The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15
The Real Thing........2004-02-17
Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

Witnesses to a Masterwork.......2005-09-09
Listening to this reminded me of this: if you want to irritate a singer, put her in an ensemble with a group of instrumentalists, and then address the group as "the musicians and the singers."
You can say that about certain amateur singers, and probably some pros as well; but you could never say that about Betty Carter. She is the most instrumental-like singer ever. Listen to what she does in the stunning 25-minute "Sounds" ("Movin' On.") Throughout, she sounds like an alto sax. And she changes tempos and ideas as fast as Messers. Hicks, Washington and Lundy can throw them out there.
Or listen to how she turns the standards "I Could Write A Book" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" around, and sounds again like a horn. Or listen to how she almost mocks "The Trolley Song" with onomatopoetic sounds.
Two remarkable things about this album: first, although there are oodles of live recordings out there, this is the first one I can remember where the inisde liner consists of a panoramic, close-up photo of the audience, digging and grooving the artist. And isn't that what it's all about? Second, throughout this recording you hear the audience break into laughter. Sometimes, you can figure it's because Ms. Carter hits them with "sounds of surprise." But other times, it has to be because of something she's doing visually. This is a concert I wish I could have seen! Clearly, the people who were there were witnesses to a masterwork--as the expressions on their faces in the photograph make clear.
If you care at all about jazz, you should own this album. I will admit that sometimes Ms. Carter hits notes, and never quite bends them into the chords. But Schnabel hit a lot of wrong notes, too, and was still one of the greatest classical pianists who ever lived. The point is: Not only did Betty Carter take chances, she had fun doing it. About how many artists can you make both claims? RC

Sheer freedom of spirit.......2004-03-18
Sheer freedom of spirit!.......2000-05-07
Uniquely Beautiful.......1999-12-19
Carter's music is entirely different. For one, she often crafted medleys out of two or three songs; the segues are so seamless and well crafted they frequently give the listener goosebumps.
For another, Carter seemed to really thrive on the live performance. This double album is all live, so there is a lot of crowd noise, but you must train your mind to not let it detract from the music, even if some fans make stupid noises at the most unfortunate moments. When you get into it, though, you begin to understand, because Betty Carter gets you so wrapped up in what she's doing that you are transfixed, and what she does is so incredible you will find yourself shaking your head and muttering "wow" under your breath.
Not everyone likes Betty Carter's style, however, so listen to a couple of the tunes before you buy. Also, "Finally" is an equally great live recording, but costs less because its only one disc.

Album Description
The hilarious Christine Lavin literally shines in live performance as she straps on a miner's headlamp and twirls her glowing batons. But the real sparkle comes from Lavin's sung and spoken wit - this singer-songwriter-guitarist regales and involves her fans with riotously acute original songs, comic monologues, quizzes, contests, and, in this case, her quest to identify Mr. Colorado Springs in the audience at the 2003 benefit concert captured on this CD."Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best" is the award-winning Ms. Lavin's seventeenth album in a recording career that stretches back to 1981. Some songs here have appeared on her previous CDs, but never like this! One of Christine's signature compositions, "What Was I Thinking?," resurfaces with updated needling of Martha Stewart, while the affectionately rueful "You Look Pretty Good for Your Age" is wrapped around Christine's search for Mr. Colorado Springs. Five other favorites are captured "live" for the first time, including the tropical ordeal of "Wind Chimes and the anthem of the uncoordinated, "Ballad of a Ballgame." There are also three new songs here.
At least half the fun of this CD comes from Christine's giddy but incisively sarcastic song intros and a half-dozen comic monologues. "What kind of a ridiculous glamour trajectory am I on?" conveys her outrage at being mistaken for an ex-nun and a lunch lady; "Bernice, Carol, and tonight's crowd compete for the science prize" is a quiz that involves such brain teasers as "How many roads MUST a man walk down before they call him a man?"
Armed only with a guitar, a Boomerang sampling device that multiplies and delays her vocals into harmonies and swirling rounds, a wry, mocking self-awareness and boundless insight into contemporary culture, the Christine Lavin live experience is just as funny when heard at home, as preserved on this disc. Lighten up and laugh for almost 75 minutes!

Interesting album, Interesting lyrics.......2006-09-20
With deep lyrics, they even remind me of Echo and the Bunnymen, but are to me, much better.
"Won't this body leave this mind? Can this child decide to find a reason why the soul might be subliming from another time? I guess that's why I have what some would say is a dangerous mind..."
Their lyrics transcend meaning at times. The cryptic nature of them with emotionally powerful melodies makes their sound aloof and complex.
Songs like "Erosion" have an outburst of energy; where, songs like "Shining on" have a certain hopefulness in their expression.
Finally, Haloes is the perfect atmospheric expression. It blends hope, dreaminess, and even sardonic wit. You never know what's going to come out their singer's mouth. This unpredictability makes their albums worth keeping your collection.
