What if Iggy Pop had passed over the legendary Stooges to fashion a raucous rock band raised on the sounds of the Mississippi Delta? That band might have been a precursor of the Soledad Brothers--primeval blues-rock intentions, bourbon-soaked vocals and an aggressively charged resonance that begs the listener to turn it up. Also hailing from Pops Detroit rock city, where their first single was produced by White Stripes frontman Jack White, the trios major label debut (a more subtle and streamlined effort than 2002s Steal Your Soul and Dare Your Spirit to Move) is a back-alley romp of guitars, drums and saxwith occasional organ and harmonica. From the opening guttural chords of "Cage That Tiger" ("I want a purr/All I get is a growl"), they ape Let It Bleed-era Rolling Stones, riff off Sonny Boy Williamson and patriotically salute the fuzzy, old school garage barrage of the American Del-Vettes (see Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968) and British Creation. --Scott Holter

The Soledad Brothers are throwback 1960's-style garage-rockers who don't stint on the fuzztone. (Jon Pareles)

Album Description
In a world straight jacketed by scripted passion and corporate identity - sometimes you just want to put push it all away and commit Treason. Treason claims its five members from the spans of North America including Toronto, Canada, Seattle, Washington and San Jose California. Their debut Waterstreet offering, Spinning, has been embraced by the worldwide press as delivering the rock voice of the millennium - Italy's Metal Shock magazine, pumping, gut wrenching guitars - USA's Electric Basement, keyboards nothing short of a mindblower, Portland Music Network, and a rhythm section as precise as a Swiss watch - Metal Shock magazine. Treason lays claim to the heart and the imagination of its fans. In the words of Sonic Foundry e-zine, Treason has serious talent, serious potential, or more succinctly as Germany's Rock Reunion says Long Live Treason!Treason's previous self titled album, which featured Alan White and Billy Sherwood of Yes, caught the attention of Waterstreet, a new media company in search of serious talent. Waterstreet got Treason into the studio immediately, arranging for the bands chief songwriter/keyboardist Ted Stockwell to produce, Zack Reinig (Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains) to engineer and celebrated producer/mix man Ron Saint Germain (Creed, Soundgarden, 311, Living Color, Tool, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc) to mix. It was incredible to have this wealth of experience, imagination and enthusiasm at our disposal. The situation couldn't have been better, said Stockwell. Adds Stern Making Spinning was an amazing experience. You can hear it in the songs; you can feel it in this album. It always gives me shivers when I hear it.

Treason ROCKS!.......2001-02-08
Right from the start, Silent Prayer lets you know that this band means business. Last Stand is a song that I HAVE TO SEE LIVE. However my absolute favourite on Spinning is the song Spinning ... it blew me away.
The band is very tight, moody and energetic. I know that sounds weird, but that's the best thing about Treason - there is so much variety in the music and instruments ... and they pull it off. And the vocals are killer ... as are the weird guitar and key sounds.
Gimme more !
Treason ROCKS !
Worth your While..........2001-02-05
The 12 songs are varied in style. The band is extremely tight and polished. The singer has a great rock voice. It would be unfair to draw comparisons to a known band. The sound is fresh and current, yet vaguely familiar. The band is not afraid of harmony and melody, and can definitely carry a tune.
Each of the songs creates its own atmosphere. All are unique in their own way. My personal favorites of the 11 tracks on the CD are "Cold Tears" and "Lethal". I kept going back to relisten to these.

The real deal...........2005-02-07
The Soledad Brothers have been around for ten years, and they may one of the last Detroit bands from the scene that spawn The White Stripes and The Von Bondies. They have released many albums but nothing that expresses their rage and glory. Voice of treason may that record that catapults them into the forebrain of the collective imagination. They are dedicated to the blues. "Cage That Tiger" is a sign of good things to come. Some bands think that they are playing the blues, but listen to things like "Son of Dogs" and you know that this band is the rightful heir to John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat. I look forward to checking these guys out live for real. They seem like a band that should break out. The blues live on in this music.

Album Description
The Soledad Brothers have a history that is inextricably linked to their Detroit cohorts The White Stripes, and the Soledad sound is about what you'd expect from a band that began recording in Jack White's living room. Borrowing liberally from the Stones and the Velvets - as well as most of the requisite blues icons - Voice of Treason is an engaging roadhouse stomp that makes for a mean soundtrack to either a night of excess or a night out on the open road. Frontman Johnny Walker puts a likeable strut into his singing, and he has enough charisma to be convincing even when the music isn't doing much to support him. The album gets off to an inauspicious start with three by-the-book barroom rockers that, while enjoyable, could be the work of a thousand other bands. Smash. 2005.
