Tough Love [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

The London Times, June 11, 2003
"...with an explosive strumming style and well-defined sense of the absurd."

Product Description
Wielding his acoustic guitar like a machine gun and tossing words and ideas around like grenades, Hamell on Trial is a high-intensity performer who writes and sings about sex, love, politics, near-death experiences, God, drug dealers, road trips, and just about anything else that enters his brain. On his latest album, Ed Hamell captures the frenetic energy of his live act in a carefully crafted recording which also stands on its own. The result is an excellent introduction to an artist whose work defies easy categorization.

This time around, Hamell's primarily solo act is fleshed out with guest appearances by Ani DiFranco (whose voice and guitar are featured throughout, most notably on the duet "All That Was Said"), Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley), Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers), and Jonathan Kane (Swans). He's also got behind-the-scenes help from the likes of veterans John Leckie (Radiohead, John Lennon, George Harrison), Phil Nicolo (The Rolling Stones, Cypress Hill, Sly and Robbie), Ani D, and Andrew "Goat" Gilchrist (Drums & Tuba) as producers.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Great Live, too!.......2005-12-02

I picked this up at one of Hamell's shows (straight from the man himself!) and it is a great CD. Short story- I was so wowed by Hamell live and CD that I burned some copies for friends to get them into Hamell. I saw Hamell about a year later and paid him $30 for one of his CDs. I told him about what I did as I felt guilty, but he said not to worry as I was spreading the word.
Very story driven, there are no bad songs on this CD (why, there is even a sing along!) You WILL love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars NOT TOUGH TO LOVE.......2004-06-12

Go out & get this one today if you can find it!! If only for the cut HALFWAY which would be a big hit if it were not for the expletive in the chorus!! Hamell on Trial is incredible live. I've seen him several times, most recently at WMNF's Tropical Heatwave in Tampa, FL. His best work is "The Chord is Mighier Than the Sword" with THE MEETING & THE VINES & RED MARTY. Then there's Hamell Comes Alive!! - Gives you the feeling of being at one of his exciting gigs!! I am partial to I HATE YOUR KID & FOLSOM PRISON BLUES. Though I love all of his recordings, he's best live due to the fact that he may break into sudden storytelling in the middle of a song to try improvising a new tune. Amazing, unorthodox & really funny. Yes, his voice is below average (so what?!!!), but thats not what he's about. He truly has something to say & can play that guitar. Truly a one-man-band live!! Hamell is a rarity in the industry today.

Hey 'music lover' from Middletown, NY - Stay there!! You embarrass me!!

5 out of 5 stars What's faster - Ed's wit or his right hand?.......2004-05-09

Ed Hamell just might be the poet laureate of America, and America doesn't even know it yet. With the fastest right hand in rock and roll, Hamell blazes his way through rock, rap, country blues and rant with the ferocity of a hurricane. Tough Love is Hamell's first studio record since his near-fatal accident and the birth of his first child (Detroit Hamell - gotta love it), but all that humility and life-rewarding experience has sharpened his tool, not dulled it.
"Don't Kill", the leadoff track, sets the table as God chastises modern man for his violent ways ("What part of thou shalt not kill don't you understand...I thought I etched that in stone!"). Those who don't like rap songs might want to listen to a real master of the art on the title track and "When Destiny Calls", another classic road-crime epic. Yet Ed is equally adept with a feather touch - "All That Was Said" and "Hail" are as delicate and poignant as "There Is A God" is angry or "Dear Pete" is funny. With a backing band featured on most tracks, including tour mate and label boss Ani DiFranco, one might think Ed's going for the airwaves. No chance...although the infectious "Downs" and the hilarious "Halfway" would be slam-dunk hit records if they weren't about (ahem) sensitive issues like drug use and corporate sellouts (Creed fans might want to avoid this record). Yes, it's true that you have to see the man live to truly appreciate his talents; his lightning wit and impeccable comic timing only heighten the experience. But as studio records go, Tough Love is funny and thought-provoking and effin' brilliant from start to finish - one of 2003's few shining moments. As usual, most of America refuses to turn off their radio and serarch out true artistry. Their loss, not mine.

4 out of 5 stars Best live performer I have ever seen.......2004-04-22

The album doesn't quite reach the heights of the guy
performing live but that's an enormously high target to
set. Taken on its own it is still an excellent effort,
you'll love it all the more if are lucky enough to
you get a chance to see him live.

5 out of 5 stars "Tough Love" is an Easy Favorite.......2004-03-30

I warn you, this review may be a bit biased seeing as that Hamell happens to be my uncle, but in my opinion, Tough Love is some of Hamell's best work yet. Although nothing can compare to his live performances, this album comes close. Each song is a story in its self. Not one track on this album is half-assed, which you can tell simply by listening to it.

"Don't Kill"
- Song from God's point of view about the modern world he sees. A great kick-off to the album and a track with as much meaning as energy. (...)

"Halfway"
- A song targeting everyone from sell-outs, current "sex-symbols", egotistical artists, George Dubbya, and even Hamell himself. Not to mention a humorous chorus (...)

"When Destiny Calls"
- More a rhyming story than song, Hamell talks about a man on the run with a stripper after taking a mob boss's car filled with cocaine. Features the voices of his wife, Linda, and newborn son, Detroit. (...)

"Hail"
- A change of pace. Hail is a slower, lighter song about three hate-crime victims, Tina Brandon, Brian Denake(sp?), and Matthew Shepherd(sp?), meeting in heaven for coffee. Great song. (...)

"95 South"
- A beat that catches your attention and the lyrics to keep it. Featuring Ani D. as backup vocals. (...)

"Downs"
- A true story about a near fatal car accident Hamell suffered and how he became addicted to the pain medication. If that don't keep you, the tune will. Have to say, though, I like the line "Stiff upper lip when they got you on the drip." (...)

"All That Was Said"
- Duet with Ani D. Very nice song. (...)

"A Little Concerned, That's All"
- A song where Hamell sings about that when he looks at the events of the world, it seems as if God doesn't seem to be paying attention or even hiding from it all. Another classic. (...)

"Everything and Nothing"
- Obviously targeted towards his wife, Hamell praises her and hooks you with a catchy beat that will stick with you for hours. (...)

"Tough Love"
- Another song/short story about Bonnie and Clyde-type couple on the run after the husband kills his boss. "Had to take a loss, I put two holes in my boss, I guess I gave my notice that way." Guess he gets no retirement benefits. (...)

"Dear Pete"
- A humorous song about a desperate criminal in need of a friend's assistance on his next job. Funny. (...)

"There Is A God"
- A verbal attack on all those who lie and harm others. Even a not-so subliminal attack on Bush. (...)

"First Date"
- Two people meet online, decide to meet, and the man gets wasted before he even meets her. Funny lyrics. (...)

"Worry Wart"
- A song about up-tight America worrying about every-damn-thing. Good point, but not one of his best. (...)

"Oughta Go Around"
- Catchy tune. Not quite sure what it's about, though. (...)

"Detroit Lullaby"
- A short song written about his newborn son, Detroit. Not very good if you don't know what it's about, so I won't rate it.

5 out of 5 stars The Iron City Houserockers' Debut Is Great.......2006-02-08

LOVE'S SO TOUGH, the debut album from the Iron City Houserockers, is absolutely great. The songs describe working-class anger and the frustrations of the common man with a lot more grit than Bruce Springsteen's more romantic BORN TO RUN; this band is more like DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN. Joe Grushecky is also a great chronicler of the struggles of EVERY individual, whether they live in gritty Pittsburgh, PA, upscale Cape Elizabeth, ME, middle-class Bayside, NY, or posh Lake Oswego, OR. Grushecky's opposition to Indonesia's trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginnings Of Pittsburgh Rock And Roll As We Know It.......2000-11-03

In the 1970's there was a band...quite possibly the best bar band of all time...and their name was The Iron City Houserockers. They weren't like Kiss and they sure weren't disco. These guys rocked bars throughout the tri state area and then they did an album. Eight of the nine songs were written or co written by lead singer and guitarist Joe Gruschecky. Most will tell you the man is not a singer in the typical sense...that's because he's a story teller. The first song I Can't Take It will explain it all to you. If you still don't get it, listen to Dance With Me and by then it will come to you. This album is a masterpiece...but, then comes the next album which is beyond masterpiece. The Iron City Houserockers are legends most have never heard of...give them a chance. You will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a heavy rock group with a person who can sing!.......2002-11-20

AWESOME HEAVY ROCK! These two albums on this CD are scorchers. No heavy rock lover should be without this album! Talk about a blowaway! Even the ballads are absolutely amazing, especially "Where Is The Love" from Inside Out and "How Long" from Tough Love. These two albums are amazingly well produced by Billy Baumgart! Top notch performance from Mark Amb on songs like "One For The Money" and "We've Lost Ground" The song I love the most is probably the awesome and iommensely powerful "Who Cries For Me", this song is an excellent song, with a hard hitting message that should make some people think about their actions! Altogether, this CD combines two flaming on fire records that can not ever be possibly dissed! TOALLY ADDICTABLE AND ROCKY AND ROOTSY AND SOUL PIERCING!

9/10/99 CHRIS MICHIE Tough Love (CatchARabbit Records) Reviewed by Eric Steiner, Cosmik Debris Magazine

Long-time San Francisco area back-up guitarist Chris Michie is out front on his third disc called Tough Love on CatchARabbit Records. His label should've been called CatchARecord Records, since Tough Love is well worth a listen. Chris has shared the stage with such blues luminaries as B.B. King, Albert King, Big Mama Thornton, Buddy Guy, and Elvin Bishop. In addition to playing with a who's who in the blues, Chris has played some of the Bay Area's trendsetting venues like The Fillmore, The Matrix, Winterland and The Family Dog. Michie's lead guitar sparkles on "Shaky House," an uptempo blues about life in an earthquake zone. He's got a full band with a capable horn section that ushers in the wistful "Don' Wanna Go," a song that gives voice to Viet Nam veterans who had second thoughts about returning stateside. My favorites include the straightahead jammin' instrumental of "The Terminal Dog," `cause I can hear him bending notes just like Buddy Guy and a lot of other great blues players. Tough Love is a fun rhythm and blues record, particularly for fans of 70's style guitar solos. In Chris Michie's hands, these guitar parts soar.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing "Tough Love" in Better Guitar, Mark Starlin says:.......1999-08-16

Chris Michie is a veteran guitarist who has played live with such blues greats as B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Taj Mahal. He has also recorded and toured with popular artists such as Boz Scaggs, The Pointer Sisters, and Van Morrison. So it comes as no surprise that his latest effort would be a polished collection of blues numbers featuring R&B and rock influences. Tough Love starts out with two horn-driven numbers that feature some precise guitar playing and Chris' distinctive voice, but may leave guitarists wishing for a little less "polish." Never fear, by the third cut, Chris is ready to rip it up and does just that on "A Bone To Pick" where he cuts loose with some extended blues jamming. It is here you notice that Chris' tone is not your typical bluesman tone. In fact, his tone on many ofthe cuts is more "shredder" than blues. This is mainly due to his choice of an Ibanez 540R guitar and a Peavey Classic 50 amp. Instrumental guitar fans will find two great cuts on the CD. "Evil Employer", a catchy instrumental with smooth overdubbed guitars and a snarly lead, is a great showcase for Chris' chops. Chris then turns it up another notch on the flat out, uptempo blues instrumental "The Terminal Dog." Other guitar highlights include the cool, horn-like opening riffs of "Sweet Disposition", the intensity building solo of "Burning Down The Wind", and the echoed, clean toned solo of the moody "I Don't Wanna Go." The CD wraps up with "Anita Shodda", a blues/rock cut that would be at home on any ZZ Top CD. The track is unique tone-wise, thanks to the use of a Roland GP-8 guitar synthesizer for the rhythm guitar and a Peavey Blazer practice amp for the lead. The Blazer amp churns out an early 70's fuzzy tone that perfectly compliments Chris' strong fretwork on this track. Overall, Tough Love is a varied collection of solid playing that should appeal to many fans of blues and blues/rock guitar.

      4 out of 5 stars Fine Guitar,vocals,horns,production.Creatively different!!.......1999-03-17

Journeyman player nice CD.Grows each time you listen...

5 out of 5 stars Great blues and roots rock........1999-02-23

The Independent Songwriters' Online Magazine says of "Tough Love": "This path to the blues gets off on the classic foot of, "Use Me". This song has been done by so many guitarists but it sounds the best when the writer of the song, Chris Michie, gets to strut his stuff all over the production. "Shaky House" Even with the repetitive lyrical structure, there's no denying that this tune rocks with the best of them. It's all about feel and this has got it! "A Bone To Pick" A decent guitar player will let the natural resonance of the instrument sing the song. Chris lets the chords breathe on their own and doesn't bother to squish the notes on top of one another. The guy knows how to play, that's for sure. "Evil Employer" funkified sensuality.

"Gimpy" retro-60's flavor with a somewhat subdued edge. "Don't Wanna Go" Ain't nuttin' like a sax to set that sultry kind of mood. Everything from Kennedy, Nixon, Lennon and Saigon......it's all in there and ready for your listening pleasure. "Burnin' Down The Wind" hard rockin' satisfaction. "Sweet Disposition" there's danger in the air. "The Method" the drums really cut through the mix and give this one a powerful presence. Impressive drum work and exciting musical directions that bounce around playfully. "The Terminal Dog" the B. B King and Johnnie Johnson kind-of-ditty that just makes you have to get up and dance. Another awesome display of Chris' guitar mastery. "Anita Shodda" made for full decibel audiences. Tight, reverbed harmonies weave in and out of the odd backdrop.

IN SUMMARY: Chris Michie is a strong, solid player with a knack for writing a clean song. No fluff or fill. This is 100% blues/rock played straight and sweet.
