I was on the hunt for new music because of old r&b and found Naked Music and Gaelle. This has a hint of r&b but that is ok because, it is done right with good smart song writing and a good sound. If you are looking for something different and you do not mind house, then get this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Soulful Voice, great music.......2007-05-14

This is what I call Sexual Healing music, easy to share with a bottle of wine on Sunday night, or have as background in a romantic dinner, excelent arrangement and exquisit voice.

Amazon.com essential recording

On Stereolab's first proper American full-length, the group skillfully dissects past musical genres and recombines them in their own Dr. Moreau-like sonic laboratory-garage. The recording is among Stereolab's least labored, most groove-oriented efforts. There are experiments like the French-pop-flavored "Pack Yr Romantic Mind," but it's mostly a lovely, loud, decadent '90s rock record. The song titles reference obscure equipment, the sounds are made with arcane instruments, the repetitive guitar work is directly lifted from Michael Rother, and the cover image pledges devotion to vinyl (the musical obscurantist's medium of choice), but somehow the band never comes off as snobbish. Stereolab's music would not only spawn dozens of imitators, but the very stuff they drew inspiration from (Esquivel, Can, Moondog, Os Mutantes) was suddenly the starting point for any self-respecting hipster's record collection. More important, it totally rocks ("Our Trinitone Blast") while beaming sunny vibes ("Jenny Ondioline"). --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars What a great songlist!.......2007-03-09

THIS is the album I used to play before going out at night. Because of rock, noise, pop, and bossa. The neighbours wanted to kill me everytime "Our triniton blast" ended. And I'd wait all night until "Jenny Ondioline" fades out.
I think this is the one which defines best their style. Absolutely classic.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Stereolab Album .......2005-08-18

This was Stereolab at its peak. A synthesis of sexy 60's pop culture noise, Neu-esque drone rock, and Jean Jacques Perrey's space age pop, with a 90's indie rock bend. This cd was my intro to stereolab in 1993 and it is their most memorable and rewarding in the end.
"Tone Burst" is a perfect example of a kind of cheeky 60's french pop thing with its droney vintage analog bleeps and Laetitia Sadier's sexy vocals gliding over the background in a manner that even touches upon "The Gift" by the VU. " Pack Yr Romantic mind" has that bossa thing going on for the first time in Stereolab's sound. "Im going out of my way" is an upbeat 60's rave up that ends with this cool experimental analog noise. "Jenny ondioline" is like a homage to NEU! clocking around 17 minutes of Sonic Youth-y, shoegazer-ish drone rock. If you can find it, there is a limited edition single for Jenny Ondioline that has a 3:51 edit of Jenny O and 3 rockin B-sides, most notably "French Disko", which later appeared in another version on Switched on Vol 2 on Drag City Records.
Any way you look at it this period of Sterolab was my favorite, and this cd is a great introduction to Sterolab's genius. It may even be the best, most consistent snapshot we'll ever see from Stereolab.

5 out of 5 stars All Stereolab is great, TRNWSB is on my FAVs.......2005-04-21

I just feel a fondness and simplicity with sound and ideology that seems more integrated on this album. "To compose, Decompose, and recompose...de ma paresse". PAUSE is an incredibly blissful indulgence in sound and lyricism, haunting the texture of historic knowledge with emotion (just my take). Warm analogue music, ironically categorized as electronica/avant garde. If you don't know Stereolab, you are missing out!

5 out of 5 stars Astronomical.......2005-04-19

If Stereolab made videogames instead of music, this would be Mario 2. It's the oddball, the one that doesn't fit right in snugly with the others (even in its own time frame). But it's up there with the best of them.
Following Peng's humble melodies, this is the only Stereolab album that actually sounds like the nineties. As with Peng, the music is heavily distorted (grainier, but mixed more professionally), but on this album, even the vocals get distorted and we even get to hear the two of them raise their voices from time to time, if only seldom. Much of this album focuses on white noise that builds up as songs continue on, rather than have a crescendo (some songs have great crescendos too, though). Jenny Ondioline (part of which comes from the "Exploding Head Movie" b-side) is an 18 minute track comprised of likely no more than five chords--it is the buildup of white noise that keeps this song interesting, and it really is a great song.
If you're a Stereolab fan who hasn't yet heard this album, but has heard everything else, you are bound to be shocked. It's loud, it's noisy, it's so...nineties. Songs like "Golden Ball" and "Our Trinitone Blast" will dispel your idea of Stereolab being constantly boppy and overtly happy. There are some really dark tracks on this album! The last track, "Lock-Groove Lullaby" is probably the darkest on the album.
I love Stereolab and I love this album. It's not as good as Mars Audiac Quintet, but what is? Every single song on this is great music to just space out to and contemplate the day. It's weird, it's amusing, it's frightening, and it's the ballsiest move by this groop in the first half of their career. Give it a spin. This one's worth checking out, Stereolab fan or not.

3 out of 5 stars not close to their best release.......2003-04-15

but still good in its own right. this song has a few very good songs on it, like crest, pack yr romantic mind, our trinitone blast, and the last song (that great melody comes up at the end of the 8th track as well and is a breath of fresh air). but mostly it represents an aspect of stereolab i dont like, which also comes up in their "space age bachelor pad music" album. while some people call this "decadence", i think thats a rather slick synonym for "repetitive". this cd is definitely not one you can listen to closely and enjoy from beginning to end. i mean, one song is almost 20 minutes long and is basically 1 chord throughout. no changes for 20 minutes. dont get me wrong, i am a huge stereolab fan and have seen them live (theyre great live, but mary hansen is dead now). one of the great things about later stereolab is how the songs daringly change to something you would have never imagined possible at the onset of the song, like jazz in a way. i really tried to love this album since i paid for it new, but i cant like it nearly as much as mars audiac quintet or dots and loops, both of which i have never paid for. those are the essential 'lab albums, with emperor tomato ketchup trailing closely behind.

3 out of 5 stars acoustically brainy, courageously distorted.......2004-11-16

I wasn't sure what direction David Dondero was searching for on this latest release with the stripped-down instrumentation, but what really stood out was his brainy lyrics. I mean, this guy can write. About weird stuff. I think he would make good friends with Steve Burns, the Polyphonic Spree, and the Flaming Lips.

The sound can be best described as somewhat hollow, autumnal, and dented. Dondero's slight whinny implies a damaged spirit, as if he were a wrongly imprisoned con who happens to be extremely bright and good at guitar, or a sailor who would have much rather stayed on land, growing fruits ("Less than the air").

People who will like this CD are those who desperately want to take a break from the hustle-bustle of city life, and will take a different train down to find that coffee shop with the open mic night where they only sing songs about the nuances of earth, transportation, the cycle of life, and loneliness.

For now I'm giving this 3 stars because I need to soak this material in. This is not immediate music - this is like reading Henry David Thoreau.

4 out of 5 stars See this clear.......2004-03-10

"I'm in love with the living and the dead!" David Dondero sings with a weird kind of happiness in the opening track of his newest album. "Transient" is a good title for it -- it's about life, loneliness, death, loss, life, and being on the road as a musician.

It opens on a bizarre note on "Living and the Dead," before lapsing into "Ashes on the Highway" -- catchy but rather macabre ("When I die/burn my body/spread my/ashes on the highway..."). The remainder of "Transient" is a mix of bouncy folk (the rock-y "Dance of Spring" and pleasant "See it Clear") and haunting slow ballads (the haunting, downbeat "20 Years" and the delightfully nuanced and musical "Stars in My Chandelier").

David Dondero and "Transient" are things that grow slowly on you, like moss on a rock. First time around, the slightly "off" vocals and stripped-down acoustic sound is unimpressive. Second time around, they start to get catchier and more melodious. The third time around, they're more interesting and nuanced.

Dondero's voice is a bit reminiscent of a folkier Wayne Coyne or Jeff Mangum. In a nutshell, his voice is flawed in a likable way; only occasionally does he wobble badly, as if he does "Less than the Air." He's better suited to ballads, where he sounds quite sad and vulnerable, but not whiny. The acoustic guitar is the major instrument here, but it's backed by some solid bass and drums (accompanied by some members of the band Bright Eyes).

The writing is pretty solid, sometimes a little puzzling ("Saw the trees becoming lovers in the shadows...") but nice to listen to. At times they seem to be laments, reportedly based on what Dondero overhears in passing conversations. Others ("The Stars in my Chandelier") are straightforward and uncomplicated, and it's here that Dondero's songwriting is particularly strong.

A nice collection of folk tinged with pop and rock. "Transient" is a sweet and downbeat look at love, death and life as a travelling musician living from day to day. It may take a little while to grow on you, but it certainly isn't forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, stick to the quick songs.......2004-02-26

Dondero is really great on this cd. Several of the quicker songs (Ashes on the Highway, See It Clear, The Living and the Dead) are some of the best I have heard all year. The music mostly consists of Dondero on guitar and Craig D on drums, and this simple setup really works great. The songs follow the life of a travelling/touring transient. I really like the way Dondero puts feeling into his singing.

4 out of 5 stars A DJ's view.......2003-12-02

I love this album. I first became aware of this artist through his song Preinvasion Jitters. I saw this CD on the rack at the radio station where I work and wondered how it slipped through my fingers. After giving it a listen, I decided it was by far one of the best new albums. it has a certian hillbilly flair and ellance that is reminicant of Woody Gunthrie, Pete Seiger, and Stephan Smith.

5 out of 5 stars The best ambient trance CD I've heard- by a distance.......2003-07-10

Admission time.. trance is not normally my scene. I do however love a wide variety of music. I discovered Astralasia through their Hawkwind remixes and found something there for me.

To me there are 2 Astralasia's.. one a straight ahead Trance band sounding no different than any other remix band/dj with thudding rhythms. Then there is a band who mix trance, ambient, psychadelic and ethnic sounding influences producing a varied emotive trip. This CD is far and away the best of the latter style and indeed the best cd in this genre Ive heard.

Shame you cant hear the last 2 tracks in the samples.. because the last 2 tracks on the album are mesmeric soundscapes which brought me to tears of joy the first time I heard them. Track 1 gives you an idea. Incidentally Im not alone in saying that!

I just can't recommend this CD too highly.. buy it and enjoy.

      5 out of 5 stars Dream.......2003-02-24

I had to write this because I just woke up from a dream where a CD was given to me. It was called Somewhere Something. I Came to this site and typed it into the search. This came up. I have never heard of this band, and had no way of knowing about the album. The cover looks very similar to the one in my dream. (An outdoor landscape on a sunny day. The UFO was not in my picture.)I am giving this album my highest rating based on this even though I haven't heard it yet.

5 out of 5 stars Call it Goa, Call it Psytrance...Call it SUPERB!.......2007-07-23

I find a lot of trance electronica rather dull. Yes, repetition is part of the experience, but you have to be creative to put things on top of the repetitive lines that intrigue the brain or move the spirit.

This is the best psytrance album I've heard. It has interesting things going on, and DANCING GALAXY is outstanding, truly, one of my top fave electronica tunes. I dare you to sit still, I dare you not to feel carried away with the energy and complexities. Fabulous. The title song is tops. But others have this sort of infectious groove that may need to build for while, but when it hooks, it hooks hard.

The track called Ambient Galaxy (one of those DUNE related songs by A.G.) reminds of what it felt like to be a kid dreaming of going out there in space (like we baby boomers all figured would become kinda normal in the 21st century, hah.) Terrific build-up, with Virginia Madsen-as-Irulan providing voice (film lines). Lovely bits of "hitch" in the beat.

Flying Into a Star has a video-game sort of ferocity/speed, and you can actually visualize yourself rushing like crazy right at and into some wild star. No one is sitting still through this.

Some cool "percussion-like" effects. I could almost sense timbales in Life on Mars, a tune that brought to mind HACKERS, the flick. It would have fit right in with that soundtrack.

I'm also a big fan of DUNE (first read it as a teenager, and have read it a dozen times since), so the tunes that make reference to the story (using lines from the Lynch film version) are a special delight.

This is great for dancing, great for driving, great for just energizing and letting your mind go out into the wide open OUT THERE spaces.

It's a pity it's not in stock and the used are so pricey. This may be ten years old, but it still makes the grade in my book.

If you can get your hands on it, get set to start trancing away....

      Mir

5 out of 5 stars Spice Expands the Mind.......2007-02-17

As a long time listener of electronica and dance music, it takes takes a lot to impress me. Astral projection did just that with Dancing Galaxy and their other masterpeice Another World. Truly the cream of the crop of trance music. Sure, it has repetitive beats, but that is just the track that this train is on as it transports you away. If you are a fan of goa or psy trance, then this needs to be in your collection. The samples, esp. the ones from the movie DUNE, really add to the otherworldlyness of this experience. The first 7 tracks transport you while the closing epic is more of an ambient experience, letting you float around in and explore this new galaxy you've been taken to.

TIP: I found this for much less on e bay - I suggest checking there before paying outrageous seller fees.

      5 out of 5 stars Massive.......2005-10-19

If you love AP or just this type of music in general, this will be one of your favs that you keep over all others. Starting with the first track, this album massive. Enjoy!

As I continue my Goa story from X-Dream's "Trip to Trancesylvania" review, Astral Projection is one of the absolute top Goa Groups of our time. I used to own over 100 Goa CDs and AP's "Dancing Galaxy" is their finest work, close behind is "Trust In Trance" CD. I remember listening to this CD over a month straight in my car. I also remember seeing them live in NYC. Gosh they are too good... One of the absolute finest Goa CDs ever existed...

5 out of 5 stars a great band breaks up.......2006-02-08

i first bought their newer cd " in response" which is alittle more melodic then heavy but its still good.later i noticed that they had older cds,so listened to the clips on this site and i loved them.this cd is amazing.most of the songs are remastered and reworkings from older albums and ep's,but this album is still worth the purchase.Heavy,hard-hitting,yet melodic hardcore at its finest from one of the most underappreciated bands of the late 90's.
put it this way: you've got poison the well" the opposite of december", converge"jane doe" and this day forward"the transient effects of light on the water".If you have the other two cds, and are big fans of poison the well, converge, than you need this cd.

5 out of 5 stars really good band.......2004-07-09

this cd is so bomb ass, they have the best melodic riffs on this album, track 5 is over the top its so amazing, the only thing i kind of didnt get into was the vocals (they scream alot), musically i would say they sound like billy idol+converge+deftones that about sums it up .

4 out of 5 stars Your wasting your time reading this, BUY IT NOW!.......2003-04-15

The local hereos are back with their second full-length effort (first for Eulogy). 9 songs of power, creativity, sincerity, and total emotion as always. So there are 9 songs on this... 2 new songs (Cupid's Diary and Disintegrating Eden), they re-recorded 3 songs off of Fragments.. (Kissing Perfection's Cheek, If I Wore A Mask, and Significant Others) and the 4 songs off the demo (My Unbroken Reflection, Writing In Cursive [ which also was on a Breakeven Comp], The End Of August, and The Effects Of Departure...). Great work from these guys. I'm a little upset at the layout, it's not as creative as I would expect from these guys. The one thing that bothers me the most is the fact that you can't hear Shaw's vocals over the music, you really have to listen to hear him (or turn it up really loud, which you should do anyway). The recording I believe was done at Skylight but it doesn't say in the cd. Also they changed some parts on older songs that threw me for a loop. Ahh I'll just shut up. As I said they always inject all their possible emotions into their music and this is no exception, from start to finish. Musically the Guitars are harder and at times faster, more precise, the precussion is down right perfect, while the bass just floats along blending emotions with beauty. I really don't have to tell anyone to buy this you should already have it.

5 out of 5 stars this is good stuff.......2002-03-26

This album is so sweet. This band mixes melodies and screaming in a way that no one else can. You'll be blown away if you appreciate sweet melodies in music and love metal. It's great!!

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction.......2000-08-28

Having only heard a few scattered Stereolab tunes, I was delighted to find this set of 3. Containing 3 of their earlier albums (Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements -1993, Mars Audiac Quintet- 1994, and Emperor Tomato Ketchup- 1995) It is a great mix and and a nice way to follow the progression of this great band. CD's are in original packaging with inserts. Besides how else are you gonna get 3 import CD's so cheap? Buy now!
