Lesley Rankine was the singer in a pretty good rock band called Silverfish, but when she started Ruby she found her voice, adopted a lyrical stance of menacing and predatory sexuality, set the words to an approximation of the grind-and-slap of industrial music, and did something that had almost never been done in an industrial context: opened up and cooed, like a flannel-shirted Billie Holiday. Salt Peter is driven by harsh, looped sounds (every instrument is processed to bring out its nastiest edge), and the rhythms at its center are usually strangled funk beats. Even without the soundplay, the songwriting is strong, especially the club hit "Tiny Meat." Rankine's grisly images are hard to shake. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Great Music from Elizabeth's time.......2002-09-13

This is an exceptional disc of music in height of popularity at
the court of Elizabeth I, and a bargan on the Naxos label(they
have several titles of early music available). The songs are all of high performance quality, and highly recomended to those interested in Elizabeth and her world. Several tracks for me stand out, including "Pour Down,You Pow'rs Divine", "Climb Not To High", and "Eliza, Her Name Gives Honour", this last composition written in celebration and honor of the queen, and beautifuly sung by Catherine King. The Rose Consort Of Viols are
also featured, the "grandfathers" of the modern bowed string
instruments were highly in vogue at the time for voice accompany or alone. For those with an interest in Elizabeth, or have seen the movie, this CD is highly recomended!

5 out of 5 stars For what it's worth.......2007-02-22

I feel that she really put allot of time into this album to give it that almost trip hop vibe, yet allowing her emotions to run all over in the actual lyrics, it's an amazing cd to me and I feel that if you liked her in the previous bands she was in you'll love her solo...

just give it a try..its worth it..

2 out of 5 stars unlistenable.......2006-10-18

Now this is something I rarely write. Especially since I was quite a music snob back in the day. This CD was soooooooooooooooooo hyped and got incredibly good reviews...and it is unlistenable. Sorry, I do not know what to say. Uninspired and badly played. I guess there is something here I do not understand.

3 out of 5 stars soundtrack.......2006-01-11

I don't know what music is played at cafes for young lesbians, but, in my imagined world, this is one of the CDs there. It's pretty much as others describe it. I re-listened to it, and it was better with some age. The detractors can't seem to handle the cross-genre blending.

5 out of 5 stars Reviset Ruby!.......2005-06-27

I've owned this album since 1995, and just recently reviseted it. I am amzed at how timeless it is. The lyrics are still amazingly provocative, and the beats still move me.Maybe I'm living in the past but this could come out in 2005, and still be innovative and beautiful. If you dont buy a used copy for 1 cent , sorry for you. Underated artist , and album. It was in 1995, and is still in 2005.

2 out of 5 stars not a fan.......2004-09-09

i'm really surprised by all of the reviews putting this album in the trip hop genre. it sounds more like awful electronic music to me. if anyone out there thinks this will sound anything more than the mood enhancing and souly trip hop you are used to, you are wrong. i just found this album in a stack of old cds in the back my dusty record cabinet, and listened to it for the first time in about six years. i turned it off after the first three songs; the jerky blips and jittery bloops made even my review writing experience uncomfortable. if you wanna get your girlie rock and roll rocks off, try pj harvey or even veruca salt instead. as for trip hop, stick with the perennial favorites mentioned in all the other reviews. and as for industrial, this isn't exactly it. not something i would play in the bedroom. not something i would play in the shower. not something i would play on the way to work. in fact, i can't think of anywhere i would play this album. i'm giving this album two stars however, because ruby is trying to be unique and they do have their own sense of direction. perhaps their other albums actually go somewhere.

I've been looking everywhere for some good drumming music to drum along to. This really works for me. Lots of different beats to learn and done repetitively enough that I can remember them, without being redundant and boring. Good stuff.

    Product Description

"('All the Color Green')'s quite an album. Anyone familiar with Breinholt's vibe will find a lot to enjoy here-heavy investment in big neo-folk grooves, with Breinholt's clear voice sharing center-stage with his articulate and confident acoustic guitar work. But "All the Color Green" distinguishes itself nicely from its siblings, due in part to the album's remarkable production. Here, Breinholt (together with producer Scott Wiley) manages to flower many of these folk melodies up from gentle circular guitar figures to big fluid walls of sound. And just when the sound seems good and thick, Breinholt and Wiley lift the roof even higher, ramping up clear, bright mixes of conversational tunes into grand and rolling folk explosions. Lyrically, Breinholt has always had a flair for the cryptic-poetic images peeking up from his train-of-thought word soup like fishes breaking the surface of a silver pond. This album is no exception to that rule (in fact, it invests more deeply in it than do his previous albums). Some fans will be content to let the stuff wash over them in nonsensical glory. Others will find plenty of code to break--plenty of treasure to dig. If you're already a Breinholt fan, you'll slip into 'All the Color Green' like an old, comfortable jacket. And just when you're as delighted as you ever expected you'd be, you'll find more--like discovering a forgotten twenty-dollar bill in an old pocket. If you're not already a member of the Breinholt family of fans, 'All the Color Green' is a better reason than ever to introduce yourself." -Sam Payne, The Independent (October 2, 2006) Track List: 1. 5 out of 5 stars peter cetera at his best.......2006-10-01

peter cetera is an awesome singer if at 60 years of age he can still hit those high marks with precision if your a peter cetera fan like me pick this album up you wont regret it all though the orchestra does sometime sound like its muffled other than that small gripe it is still an awesome cd

1 out of 5 stars sappy love songs.......2006-09-14

The compositions, Rhythms and singin-style of Peter Cetera sound always the same. He is a typical sappy love song - singer who prefers the love ballads and cheesy love adventures.
it might have been a bit tedious and boring.

The problem is everywhere: If you are a Hardrock fan like bands Uriah Heep, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, your ears can't be familar with all these silly love songs. My ears cannot work like that.

      there are two alternatives:
      - if you are a hardrock fan. You like a mythological lyrics, you won't like Peter Cetera or Chicago. Keep your fingers away from this !!!
      - if you are a sappy love song fan then please buy this cd !!!

2 out of 5 stars Poor recording of a great concert..........2006-08-02

I'll agree with the reviewer who called it his review "great artist; poor recording". I bought this hoping for the same great performance I saw on PBS but the recording process was just terrible for this concert in Salt Lake, UT. The concert music sounded very far away and when Peter Cetera's voice climaxed, the audio muffled which was very annoying for me. The recording wasn't as clear as it was from his television performance which has me thinking the recording process is what is terrible.

      4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!.......2004-12-26

Unlike the previous reviewer, I believe this is quite a good CD. There is one problem; you can't actually hear the orchestra on some of the tracks, which is a shame, because they make the songs pretty classy. I'm a diehard Chicago fan, and I've been upset with Cetera for seemingly distancing himself from his former bandmates. However, it's nice to hear him doing some old Chicago songs, mixed in with his solo stuff. Cetera's voice earns this CD a four-star rating from me. I've never heard him do much in the way of live stuff, and I'm impressed by his still-impressive singing voice; he manages to hit even the high stuff here. Now, if only he would get back with Chicago...

2 out of 5 stars Great Artist, Poor recordings.......2004-12-16

It is sad to listen to this poor quality recording of Peter Cetera live in Salt Lake.
I wonder if he did listen to this cd because if he did, he would fire his sound-crew immediately. Because the songs supported by the symphony orchestra are special and well performed, it is a shame that this product is sold. And even a bigger shame on Peter Cetera who's recordings normally have a 5 star rating.
      Sorry Peter.
      Rogier from The Netherlands.
