Product Description
Starsailor return with their third album, 'On The Outside'. Both their previous two albums have now sold in excess of 1.5 million copies worldwide and on the last campaign they hit number one in the French singles chart with 'Four To The Floor'. Starsailor never stopped working, they continuously toured, only pausing to write and record their new album, and in the process have created an impassioned statement, a record of real honesty and urgency. Much of the record was recorded live which has aided the directness and captured the passion. Galvanised like never before, the band have produced their best work to date. Featuring the fantastic comeback single 'In The Crossfire', the band's new album 'On The Outside' was produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, The Vines, Elliott Smith) and looks set to take the band to the new heights they deserve. The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

5 out of 5 stars Somewhere Over The Rainbow.......2006-02-24

A Sensational CD with Lots of Showtunes that Keep You Happy and makes You Want To Sing Along With!!!

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh. I love it........2007-07-18

I actually heard track 1 (Highway One) while on a plane. The song impressed me so much that I looked up the album and bought it. I really enjoy this band. They are comparable to Little Big Town (but less folksy). Anyway, I recommend this CD to my friends. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Habit forming ... .......2007-07-12

I received this CD as a gift from an audiophile friend. It hasn't left my CD player since (which, quite honestly, is totally out of character for me). Great writing, wonderful harmonies, terrific hooks -- a masterful blend of simple and complex that just gets better with every listen.

5 out of 5 stars Memphis Duo Comes Hella Hard on This Jizoint.......2006-10-13

Ball and G came with nothin short of fire in 1994's classic On the Outside Looking In. The album is loaded with hard, political, trill, and fiery lyrics, so you know they comin' real. Beatwise, the songs for the most part are immaculate, with a mix of that syrupy southern twang and whiny G-Funk. They come bangin' on wax on "Lick Em Up Shot" with a menacing beat. I love the Issac Hayes sample on No Mercy, paired with an awesome whiny keyboard riff. Ideas of the black experience and racism is totally evident on the classic "So What U Sayin'" with a classic guitar riff and keyboard driven G-Funk beat. The title track touches on the "pen," the "system," or the "tank,"whichever you prefer, and the realities surrounding it, all over a sick, melodic beat. All in all, this album deserves classic status because of the top-notch lyrics and production.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Ball N' G.......2005-10-09

very differnt type of beats than on "Comin out Hard" & "On Top of the World"...Def. has much old School influence, but still the tight rhymes we can expect from Orange Mound's Best. My Fav tracks would have to be "Playa's nite out", "Crumbs 2 Brixx", "Anotha Day in the Hood", & "So what u Sayin'"...Although every track here is f***in' tight. Kinda hard to find this...so if u do, cop it!

4 out of 5 stars Inside Looking Out.......2005-07-03

Memphis, TN duo Eightball & MJG in their early years of the game dropped a second Suave House release On The Outside Looking In. "Lay It Down" featuring Thorough & Crime Boss is the highlight of this album to end it off on a memerable note. As MJG usually plays the background (since Eightball is constantly appearing as a featured guest) flexes his muscle on "Lick'em Up Shot". Both have solo songs on here, Eightball's "No Mercy" and MJG's title track. This, in comparison to their later work, is a lot funkier as they were still searching for a signature sound. The both are good with their descriptive tales of their lifestyles and past experiences, but Eightball is more the hustler and MJG is the pimp. Not the classic as On Top Of The World, but is still worth checking out the history of their careers.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER CLASSIC ALBUM BY THE DUO.......2001-04-15

Eightball & MJG's first album "Commin' Out Hard" was awesome. I didn't think they would be able to come out with an album even better. Well, they did. And this album - "On the Outside Lookin' In" is one of those rare albums that introduce us to something new, one of those albums that take rap to another level. And that's what this album is all about. The crew continues to lace us with nothing but straight game. Comming out of Orange Mound, Memphis, these two young rappers are some of the realest ones there is and some of the most talented as well. All over the album we get stories about street life, the rap industry, pimpin' or just having a good time. Eightball and MJG both have special voices and deliveries and you just cannot decide which one is better. Another thing that makes this album so unique is the production. It's amazing, on many parts is not just great beats - it's music! Complicated beats with a lot of instruments and changing melodies. They did a hell of a job there. That's a classic gangsta rap album.

EMI. 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Third time is still a charm.......2007-05-18

I got to say, with their 2 previous albums, Starsailor became one of the best British pop/rock bands around. This excellent album continues to catapult them onward to potential greatness. Though, its a long way off from being completely different from the previous 2 albums, Starsailor have "bulked up" a bit on this release with a more rocking sound. Electric guitars and faster tempos are more present here, examples as "In the crossfire", "Keep Us Together", and "Faith, Hope, and Love". The album is probably the most up-beat album yet. However, one of the best tracks on here may be the slowest and calmest of them all. The excellent acoustic "Jeremiah" is amazingly beautiful as well and haunting. There is nothing dramatically different from their previous albums. You're getting just want you've come to expect from this band: Well-written, catchy, melodic, under 5 minute pop/rock songs. Its hard to say if this album is their best so far, I don't think it beats out Love is Here, but its still VERY good. Basically, if you like Starsailor's previous stuff, there's absolutely no reason not to like this. Definitely recommended for fans of Travis, Coldplay, Keane, Richard Ashcroft, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Another Classic from Starsailor.......2006-08-05

"On the Outside" again demonstrates classic Britpop from James Walsh and company. Interesting is a greater sense of the Charlatans UK.

4 out of 5 stars Nice followup.......2006-05-02

"On the Outside" is a new follow-up to 2004's "Silence is Easy". The band is really coming into their own; however, there are very few tracks which are "radio ready".

Be that as it may, Counterfeit Life, This Time, Keep Us Together and White Light are the stand-out tracks.

Finally, as an import: the cd is "protected".

If you're on Windows, insure that you either hold the "Shift" key when you insert the CD OR (better) turn-off "Auto Play" of Audio-CDs.

If you're on a Mac, track one will be a bit jittery, but, otherwise things should be OK.

3 out of 5 stars Coming from any other band, this would be a breakthrough!.......2006-03-02

...but coming from Starsailor, I was expecting something a little more complex. Not that I don't like "On The Outside," but for all intensive purposes this is straight-ahead, 4:4, three-chord rock album with some catchy hooks. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but after "Silence..." I was expecting something a little more complex, artistically speaking. This album just kinda....fills the void. It's a shame because I really like this band, but I think they're probably too constricted by their label right now to try anything really daring, thus we're given an album of pop songs. I'm really banking on something groundbreaking in a year or two, and I'll continue to follow this band until then.

There are a couple other reasons I gave this a 3 instead of a 4:

1) I bought the "import" version of this album which originated in Argentina, because where I live (Portland, Oregon, USA) Starsailor are all but unknown and the album has not been released here (yet?). Sadly, the copyright protection made it rather difficult for me to copy the album to my Rio, which is *perfectly legal.* Even worse, when you toss this CD into your computer's CD-rom, a 3rd party audio player launches and plays the album at radio quality. None of my standard audio players could decipher the copyright protection, so I was forced to listen to the album in raspy 128-bit mp3 quality. The audio player sucks, it's a piece of crap.

2) The vast majority of the songs on this album stick to the same 4-5 chords (I play guitar. Trust me, I know). This isn't a terrible thing, but it really slows down the progression of the album to the point where you wonder, "Did I just hear this song....oh no wait, this is a new song, but with the *exact* same sound."

Again, this is a decent album. I rarely give 5 stars, so a 3 star rating from me means "buy it," but don't expect the album to inspire you/lower your taxes/save money on car insurance. It's worth the XX dollars you pay for it!

4 out of 5 stars Neat follow up........2006-02-17

Warning: This disc does not play in Itunes or can be put on the Ipod easily. There are a number of cracks out there if you are interested. That said,This a more angtsy follow up from their last album. I listen to a lot of music and am surprised why Starsailor hasn't caught on in a big way, their music is an angtsy almost emotionally frantic essence of current britpop which is enjoying a good resurgence of late. Starsailor still persists with really hashed out guitar rock but some of the singles can be forwarded not having enough oomph to them though the lead singer certainly tries but he can do so much. Worth a listen. Though they aren't superstars by any measure you can easily see a potential in them to be the next Kasabian or Snow Patrol.

5 out of 5 stars An Album Worthy of a Great Live Artist.......2007-07-05

Starsailor is first and foremost a band best experienced live. Audiences are drawn to the raw energy of the band, especially lead vocalist James Walsh. With their first two albums, it seemed difficult for the band to replicate the potency of their live performances. "Good Souls" from Starsailor's debut album Love is Here is a good example. This song, which ends each live performance is well-written and well-rendered on the album, but lacks the energy cum edginess immediately apparent when heard live.

On the Outside on the other hand, comes much closer to proffering the listener a sense of the live Starsailor. It has a raw, immediate feel to it, yet it does not forgo a tightness and flow that also marks their live appearances. Until Starsailor releases a live concert album, On the Outside is an excellent effort. Starsailor fans will see it as yet another step in their maturation as artists, and newcomers will receive a great introduction to the band.

Note: If you are unfamiliar with Starsailor, you might recognize the first track of On the Outside, "In the Crossfire." It has been getting airplay on alternative stations in the States, they performed it for their Tonight Show appearance last summer, and it was featured on the CBS television network promoting its Sunday night fall lineup. After their own tour in the States and Canada, Starsailor also supported James Blunt during a portion of his U.S. concert tour late in 2006. Just recently they opened for the Stones in Europe.

4 out of 5 stars I Hear Them Screaming on the Radio.......2006-08-26

Starsailor broke out in England and had massive success earlier this decade right around the same time as another melodic band from that country, Coldplay. But unlike Chris Martin and the boys, Starsailor's debut single stateside, Good Souls, failed to get as much play as Yellow and their follow up Silence Is Easy wise widely ignored here two years ago as another similar band Keane gain notoriety with Somewhere Only We Know. Now Starsailor is back to see if the third time is truly the charm with the release of On the Outside.

On the new album the band takes a decided harder sound, but instead of the crunching guitars or piano that Coldplay in known for, Starsailor instead assaults you with a wall of noise. Not coincidentally the inventor of the Wall of Sound, Phil Spector helmed their previous two albums, but wasn't around for this one. Instead the disk was produced by Rob Schnaph who has worked with the like of Beck and Elliot Smith. The one-two punch of In the Crossfire and Counterfeit Life come out you full force while lead singer James Welsh is found screaming at times which only builds the effect even more and isn't afraid to reach for notes throughout the album. The emotion in the music and the singing never lets down on the whole album which could be attributed to the record being record live in the studio.

But it's not all a melodic wall of noise, I Don't Know is a straight ahead rocker filtered through American blues that is reminiscent to mid-eighties U2. Get out While You Can goes from a haunting acoustic guitar and piano verse to a more melodic chorus and back again. Jeremiah is a slow moving acoustic song with a lyric, "And every time I see the sun go down I think of you," that can easily get stick in your head and is a great way to cap off the album (bonus track excluded). Speaking of the bonus track, Empty Streets, it is the closest song on the album that has the same melodic feel as previous works such as Good Souls.

There is anger in the lyrics that coincide with the harder sound whether it's love, "See that poor girl with the glint in her eye, she could turn you that way" (I Don't Know), political, "I don't see myself when I look at the flag. Thank God for that" (In the Crossfire), globalization, "A war for corporate glory re-told as a fairy story" (Counterfeit Life), and life itself, "Tired of living in this modern land, too many ideals to meet with its demands" (Faith Love Hope). On the Outside may be a step backwards in trying to get commercial success stateside, but it is a step in making better music.

Popular on the Lone Star college circuit and barely known outside it, Cory Morrow is a very fortunate son of Texas. His native state has given him plenty of roadhouse troubadours to emulate, a loyal audience that embraces him as its own, and the pick of Austin-based musicians to add substance to an artistry that might otherwise seem pretty shallow. Co-produced by the ubiquitous Lloyd Maines (Joe Ely, Jerry Jeff Walker, Pat Green), Morrow's music substitutes pleasant and sincere for striking and original. Though he shows more thematic ambition than on previous releases (reaching a little too far on the vaguely spiritual "In Spite of Spite"), his material still tends toward the clichéd ("Take Me Away") and the generic ("Dance by the Rio Grande"). A serviceable cover of the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil" highlights that song's bluegrass roots, while Morrow's version of Drivin N Cryin's "Straight to Hell" bristles with more conviction than he brings to his own material. --Don McLeese

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great American Singer/Songwriter.......2002-05-22

I became interested in Cory Morrow after hearing "Nashville Blues" on the radio in Austin, TX. I picked up that album "The Man That I've Been" and found it to be a collection of catchy, well-written songs that can only be classified as country, but have nothing to do with the schmaltz that comes out of Nashville these days. Since I was so fond of that album, I had high hopes for the follow up. And, after listening to "Outside the Lines" a few times, I am not disappointed. The original songs are a little more mature than those on previous albums. The cover songs, "Friend of the Devil" and "Straight to Hell" are really well done and appropriate to the type of music Cory does. I think the album is fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars Maturing work from Texas troubadour.......2002-04-17

Cory Morrow writes, records and tours in a Texas-centric universe unaffected by the gravitational pull of Nashville's musical black hole. Across five releases (including an album of covers recorded with fellow Texan, Pat Green) and endless rounds of the Lone Star state's dance halls and college campuses, the Austin-based Morrow has carved out a stardom that is a legacy handed down from the independence of Waylon, Willie and the boys.

This release finds Morrow's songwriting maturing from his earlier booze-soaked works (not entirely missing, mind you) to introspective songs of romance, morality and faith. Celtic-flavored love songs such as "More Than Perfect" and lamentations like "(Love Me) Like You Used To Do," find Morrow probing deeply into the complexities of relationships. Many of the tracks, fleshed out with producer Lloyd Maines, lean on acoustic playing, but Morrow still kicks up some electric two-steppers, including the title tune and "Straight to Hell." The standout "Drinkin' Alone" combines a shuffle rhythm with fiddle and steel to make a danceable tune out of a rather sad tale.

The craft and balance of Morrow's latest situates his music between the singer-songwriter sound of Bruce Robison and the graceful sophistication of Clint Black. It's a mix that would play well outside of Texas, if only Morrow could find the time to tour abroad.

3-1/2 stars, if Amazon.com allowed fractional ratings.

    2 out of 5 stars Mediocrity Celebrated.......2002-03-14

Cory Morrow and Lloyd Maines deserve each other. They're both purely mediocre talents, and this CD lives up to every bit of that mediocrity. Maines' slick, souless production has found a soulmate in Morrow's slick, souless lyrics. This is a marriage made in mediocre heaven.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2002-03-06

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Outside Inside" might be the title for a reason.......2007-02-23

When the predecessor of this album, "The Completion Backwards Principle" was released, I heard two reactions from my friends. From those who had never heard the Tubes before, their comments were along these lines: "Hey - there's a new band called the Tubes and they're great!" From those who had been long time fans of the group, their reactions were negative and they expressed disappointment that the Tubes had "sold out." I was alone in my reaction, for I had been a fan for a long time, and yet felt that they had delivered an excellent, albeit more commercial offering for the public to suck up (and for which the Tubes might actually make some well-deserved money, for a change!)

When I heard the cut, "Tip Of My Tongue" on San Francisco's "KSAN The Jive 95," I rushed to the music store to get my copy of "Outside Inside." I was so impressed with "Tip Of My Tongue," that even if it had been the only good tune on the tape, I would have counted it worth the cost.

This is why I'm so shocked to read other amazon reviewers writing that the only good tune is the first track, "She's A Beauty." I'm sorry, but that is just a false statement. I know people all have their own tastes, etc., but it's just untrue to say that all of the other tunes are just "filler."

My tastes in music have never been what anyone would call mainstream. There are no best of the 70s or best of the 80s or best of the 90s compilations out there that have even ONE tune on them that represents what I like. Therefore, I think I'm qualified to make the following statement: The Tubes DID present a more commercial type of music on "The Completion Backwards Principle," and "Outside Inside." However, just because it is more comercial doesn't mean it's not good. Those two albums are excellent - the songs show talent in all areas: Writing, singing, musicianship and recording technique.

Could it be that the reason they titled this album "Outside Inside" is because for YEARS they were thoroughly OUTside the mainstream in their approach to music, and then they put together two albums which were closer to being INside the mainstream? It's a thought. Even if this is true, there's STILL enough of the Tubes' own individualism and signature to keep these two albums very interesting. (You gotta love it when Martha sings, "You better keep that thing on a chain!" on "Monkey Time.")

If you are an 80s music fan, these two albums are mandatory to your collection.

1 out of 5 stars just not very good.......2006-12-27

I haven't listened to this in a long time, but came across it again and decided to give it a whirl.
The first song everyone "knows" and is decent. The rest, just not very good.
I rarely remove things from my iTunes library, but everything but the first song was deleted here.

5 out of 5 stars BGO finally gets it right..........2006-06-22

Unlike its predecessor, Completion Backward Principle, which suffers from BGO's unexplained ineptness with reissues, this one meets the mark and sounds great with newly remastered clarity. They even included the once omitted "Monkey Time" version that Martha Davis balked on after it came out. Previous versions included the alternate single version sung by Michele Gray. Nice to have both finally. A worthy follow up, although far from their earlier efforts, but enjoyable nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Solid piece of commercial rock.......2005-08-31

To many this was a Tubes sell out album as many songs were aimed directly at the charts, but there's really nothing wrong here unless you just want to deprive a band from having any mainstream success. The Tubes paid their dues through the 1970s setting a standard for wild weird shows that got them banned in many cities throughout the states. They played thousands of shows without the benefit of having any chart success, but as the 1980s dawned, the band, starting to get a bit long in the tooth, searched for chart success by spoofing the corporate yuppie idiot public with the fine "The Completion Backwards Principle" and sought to have more success with a straight-up pop effort. "She's a Beauty" put the band all over MTV and the rest of the album delivers fine pop songs. The beautiful 'Fantastic Delusion" the neck snapping R&B of "Tip of my Toungue" and the catchy "Theme Park" all work well under the expert production of David Foster. Also welcome is the hard rocking "Out of the Business" (with a killer hook). There's also the usual Tubes weirdness (Wild Women of Wongo, Drums, Monkey Time) to go along with the straight-ahead songs. The album was a sucess but petered out after a short run which pee-off Fee Waybill enough that he basically lambasted the public on the David Letterman Show with good reason. The band paid their dues, wrote great songs, were a second to none live act, but couldn't get no respect. I understand him completely. The band deserved better.

    5 out of 5 stars There's more here...........2004-09-27

There's more here then meets the eye...or the ear. Everyone will recognize "She's A Beauty", but the rest of the CD, is well worth listening....even though the other review listed here calls it "filler"! I gave this 5 stars because it's not only my favourite Tubes release, but it contains my favourite Tubes song...No Not Again. If you liked "Completion Backwards Principle" you will enjoy this CD as well. If you can still find copies of this CD, buy it! These guys were way ahead of there time, and there music still holds up, some 20 years later.

    5 out of 5 stars this won't make or break me, it's just my OCD . . . .......2005-05-03

Great catchy, fast, pop-punk that rocks hard and sticks to the ribs. Falls along the spectrum somewhere between the Ramones and Snuff but, as a record, it definitely stands alone. Think the Queers and/or Scared of Chaka, with a dose of no-bullsh#t late-70's style power and chord changes. Lots of fun (see review below) and highly recomended!

4 out of 5 stars These Men are Marked for success..........2005-02-08

Thirteen songs in 28 minutes, played with Ramonesy enthusiasm and tightness. The Dirtnap label specializes in this kind of thing, and the Marked Men is one of the better acts I heard in 2004. They play very fast but not sloppy, and even slip in the occasional 2 and 3 part harmonies! The singing is right on key and tuneful, not gruff, sung in the style of the Ramones but without the goofy Joey Ramone vibe. Lyrics that are clever but not always intelligible; nothing too deep but which avoids the annoying "emo" or "angst" style lyrics of the last 5-10 years, which is nice. It all adds up to a fun listen, something you can blast on your headphones on your way to school or work, or in your room at top volume, and it all flies by quite enjoyably. Crank it!
