The UK does it the best.......2005-08-04

I am always looking for the perfect compilation or soundtrack album and this series is 99% there. I first bought a NOW album when I lived in the UK, and I don't even preview the selections anymore. No one does pop and dance lik the British, and if that's what you are looking for primarily, any NOW album will fit the bill. Some compliations are stronger than others but that's why there is a skip button. This album--#56--gets my thumbs up.

I have got now 53 and now 56, i love these cds because every time one comes out a new song that as also just come out comes on it. The music on them are ace there is abit of everything on them like kylie minogue,britney spears,blue etc and i could garantee that i would like it.

Two Nations Separated By A Music Compilation Series.......2004-04-07

When "NOW 55" came out in July I wrote,"Skip this double disc horror and buy the single disc 'NOW 13'". Wow did I hate the album,I awarded it one(1) star! But,looking back,my negative review was rather bias.As an American,I'm used to the U.S. "NOW" series and the two are very different for two key reasons. Those reasons being (1)Ours are 1 disc,whereas the U.K. editons are 2. Some prefer double disc because they get their moneys worth,but I prefer single disc because the double albums are too overwhelming. (2)The two series reflect current musical taste in their respective nations. America wants rap,England wants Pop. Is there anything wrong with that? Not at all. Here is a partial breakdown of the songs I have heard:
1.Black Eyed Peas feat. Justin Timberlake"Where Is The Love?"A.Rap has a very negative image,here is a song that addresses world issues and opposes violence.
6.Beyonce feat. Jay-Z"Crazy In Love"A+.This song is catchy, addictive,stormin' and one of,if not the,best song of 2003.
10.Lumidee"Never Leave You(uh ooh,uh ooh!)"D.How in the hell did this song ever make the top 10,or for that matter the top 1000! Stupid,pointless and on of 2003's worst songs.
11.Stacie Orrico"Stuck"B-.A decent pop tune,although it does get a little annoying.
24.Justin Timberlake"Rock Your Body"A-.This is the best dance song of the year,cool and very well done.
26.Nickelback"Someday"A-.A very well done rock track,not as good as "How You Remind Me" though. Some songs just can't be equaled.
31.50 Cent feat. Nate Dogg"21 Questions"B.Another good song from the hottest new rap artist.Once again Nate Dogg contributes alot to the track.
32.Ashanti"Rock Wit U(Awww Baby)"B+.This is just a great song to relax to.Light,catchy and easing;the song is nothing but fun.
33.Joe Budden"Pump It Up"B+.Not my favorite rap song,but still it is very good and really catchy.Joe Budden deserves more recognition than he gets.
Although I have not heard the other songs,I can assure you that the tracks from Kylie Minouge,Elton John and Daniel Bedingfield will be terrific. Just as the songs from Atomic Kitten and Blue will be complete crap.
Bottom Line:**1/2. So I give the album 2.5 stars,mainly because I was so unfairly harsh on "NOW 55".I suppose that it is all based on what is popular in the two nations.Just picture what would happen if the two series joined together...we would have the best compilation album EVER recorded! So in closing,if you want Dance/Pop,buy "NOW 56"(U.K.). But if you want R&B/Hip Hop,then buy "NOW 14"(U.S.). Make your choice!

Now 55 Was Better but 56 still has some great songs.......2003-12-28

Many of the songs on this album are...well...never heard anywhere else. Elton John is a great singer, but why is he on this album??? Whatever. There are two trance/dance songs on this album (and no Scooter) which makes me kind of dissapointed. I'll review all 43 songs on this album.
1. BEP: Where Is The Love? (B+) I rated this song on Now 14. Great song, teaches nice values (though many don't want that in a rap song, too bad for them)
2. Rachel Stevens: Sweet Dreams (B) Heheh. Nice song. Great new voice. Maybe she'll return in Now 57. I doubt it.
3. Kylie Minogue: Slow (C+) She has made MUCH MUCH better songs.
4. Blue: Guilty (C) Nice chorus but everything else is blah.
5. Fatman Scoop: Be Faithful (B+) This proves that all the crazy people out there can make good music.
6. Beyonce & JayZ: Crazy In Love (B-) This song is making me crazy right now. Where is BABY BOY?
7. Sugababes: Hole in the Head (B+) Their best song. Nice disco-type song. Better than "shape" on Now 55.
8. LibertyX: Jumpin (C+) Whatever.
9. Jamelia: Superstar (C+) Whatever, Ayo ayo.
10. Lumidee: Never Leave You REMIX (B-) Uh oh, uh oh, bad song!
11. Stacie Orrico: Stuck (B) "More To Life" is a better song but "stuck" is pretty good. Stacie is talented.
12. Lemar: Dance With You (C+) Good voice, bad song.
13. Javine: Surrender your Love (C+) Yet again, Javine, whatever.
14. Emma: Maybe (B) Nice song.
15. S Club 8: Sundown (B) Cool one.

5. Busted: Sleeping With The Light On (B+) Good song, actually.
6. Mark Owen: 4 Minute Warning (A-) GREAT SONG. Nice western feel. I eagerly await his next songs.
7. Amy Studt: Under The Thumb (B+) Still, Amy has got the good songs. "Misfit" was better but this song still shows her talent.
8. Texas feat. Kardinall Offishall: Carnival Girl (B-) Good intro music but the rest of the song slips.
9. 50 Cent & Nate Dogg: 21 Questions (B) Still's got good rap songs.
10. Ashanti: Aww Baby (B) The ultamite chillout song.
11. Joe Budden: Pump It Up (B-) OLD! (and bad)
12. Jamieson: Complete (B-) Slow & fast, good & kind of bad.
13. Lisa Scott-Lee: Too Far Gone (B) Still has the talent from "Lately". Listening to this one is worth it for the "oh"s.
14. Angel City & Laura Mcallen: Love Me Right (B+) Great vocals, cool beat, fun song overall.
15. Richard X & Kelis: Finest Dreams (B-) This not the finest, the finest, I've seen... I would have chosen "milkshake"
16. Rishi Rich feat. Juggy D & Jay Sean: Dance With You/Nachna Tere Naal (A-) Cool music, cool rappin' style, three Bhangra songs on a NOW album in a row. Cool!
17. UB40 & UCOS: Swing Low (D-) The #1 Most annoying, Dumbest, the worst song on this album, or Now 55, or 54, or 53, 52, 51, etc. It didn't fail because the background music is OK.
18. Starsailor: Silence Is Easy (B-) Whatever. Nice rock music.

19. Stereophonics: Maybe Tomorrow (C+) Whatever! Maybe tomorrow.
20. Daniel Bedingfield: Never Gonna Leave Your Side (B+) Nice lyrics. Atmospheric music. Shows Daniel's true talent.
21. Michael Andrews & Gary Jules: Mad World (C) Sad, both meanings used.
Overall, this album gets a (B-). Still one of the better NOW albums, taking away the TERRIBLE "swing low" song. It makes "rock your body" look like the ultimate song. Other than those two stinkers, buy this album, skipping CDTWO's Tracks 2 & 17. Got that? CDTWO still stands out as the best cd on this album. YEAH ashley abram, again, you've been makin' great compilations. i'll be there to review the 57th installment.

Great CD!.......2003-12-27

This is a great CD for fans of pop music. Unlike the "now that's what I call music" american CD's, these are filled with pop and dance and rock music and not rap. The songs have great tunes and anyone who is looking for any pop or dance type music should check out the other Now CD's from the UK.

Unforgettable performances of Handel and Mozart........2001-10-21

I first heard recordings by the Danish tenor Aksel Schiotz in the 1970s, not long after he died. The particular recordings were "Comfort Ye" and "Ev'ry Valley Shall Be Exalted" from "The Messiah." Since then, every other tenor singing those pieces has sounded terminally asthmatic to me. None has had Schiotz's bell-like high notes or remarkable fluency and breath control. This CD has those "Messiah" cuts, as well as beautiful performances of Mozart, Bach, and Dowland. Schiotz, who lived from 1906 to 1975, did not have a particularly powerful or colorful voice, but he more than made up for that with the purity and warmth of his tone. Unfortunately, Schiotz had a blighted life. Just as he was set to begin his international career, the Nazis invaded his native land. He became a hero of the Danish Resistance, but in 1946, while singing in London to great acclaim, he suffered a tumor of the acoustic nerve. He nearly died, and was robbed of the ability to either speak or sing. A horrendous two-year struggle finally brought him back to the concert hall--this time as a baritone--but his voice had lost its unique beauty. It is the recordings from 1938-46 that will remain his legacy, and the recordings on this CD are his finest.

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
