4 out of 5 stars TOTO: Falling in between...... Toto is studioextragavanza with flair and creativity..........2007-07-23

Toto has very good musicans who can handle their instruments, and it shows on their latest Falling in Between. Track 1 Falling in between has a light touch of heavy metal goodness, with some "extraordinary jungle touch" over it`s soundpicture. It`s a great mix with heavymetal/studiosound and a master stroke vokal too. Light headbanging goodie, goodie, helps too. Track 2 Dying on my feet, is more into jazz/funky territory. Great heavy metal touch on this one too, but it`s the room inbetween, with the different instruments that make the breathing touch of magic. Awsome. Track 3 Bottom of your soul begins with a very moody drum beat which sparkles in your ears. It has also that nature`s own jungle touch over it`s moody atmosphere. Oh yes we are in classical "Toto Africa" mood on this one. Track 4 King of the World is more into classical "light heavy metal" Toto once again. An uplifting mood shines on this one alltrough.Track 5 Hooked, sparks away some blues mood, With the right stroke on the guitar strings to hold up the quality right trough. Track 6 Simple Life is the first "slow one tempo song". It`s a minor let down. It doesn`t take off in a way.Average i will say. Track 7 Taint your world is back in uptempo heavy metal mood once again. It`s fastback.hardtop, sprint, halleluja, alltrough. Track 8 Let it go is in the funky land of Toto. It swing`s funky happy alltrough. Track 9 Spiritual Man is so spiritual. A real modern Toto classic, which give you the shivers down your`e spinal cord. Very moving, With a religious touch which gives it the extravaganza heaven up above.Track 10. No end is in sight end`s up the Cd. Tickling gitar riffs, and a great vocal.Oh Yes, this one holds up the standard, and the vocal is great too. Toto is a group with quality studio extragavanza all over, and this Cd is not an exception.

4 out of 5 stars TOTO WITH AN EDGE.......2007-06-26

Man, these guys are good! Everything from the songwriting, arrangements, production and musicianship is in top form. This CD has a great marriage of styles and still carries a strong and unified sound that doesn't veer off course into chaos - it's a very cohesive yet diverse album.

Really solid, and sounds great cranked up. Some cool special guest musicians make for a bonus treat also. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Wow, what an awesome album!.......2007-06-14

I bought this album from emusic.com without recommendation- I listened to the first few bars of the title track and was immediately blown away. Dying On My Feet, King Of the World, and Taint Your World are also standout tracks. Tasty guitar work abounds.

4 out of 5 stars it's OK.......2007-06-01

I guess after Mindfields I had other expectations. still, it is Steve and the gang, so it might grow on you after a while.

4 out of 5 stars The guitarman !.......2005-07-09

Since you have come to this page and are reading this review, you probably are familiar with "Luke"'s work. For those who aren't, this is the guitarist of Toto, and one of the three leaders of the band, together with David Paich and Jeff Porcaro (gosh, it's already been thirteen years... We miss you Jeff). Besides playing with his band, he has also played on an infinite number of albums, as a guest artist. The list would be too long to draft here, but he played with Earth Wind and Fire, Boz Scaggs, Kenny Loggins, David Roberts, Los Lobotomys, etc, plus apparently odd collaborations such as a recent one with Larry Carlton.

Over the years, Steve Lukather has released four solo albums (including Santamental, which is a strange fruit), this one being the second. They all respond to a need to express his "harder" line solo (Toto oscillating between a "poppy-jazzy" edge and a rockier line when he took command, at least until Jeff's departure), and that is what he also does here. The album is rock and blues. It has lots of riffs, obviously, and he lets us see why Jeff Beck is his hero. But it also has a couple of surprises : a toto-like ballad ("Borrowed time"), an almost new age-jazz-rock track ("Froth") and a beautiful tribute to his buddy Jeff (the closer, simply called "Song for Jeff"), probably the deepest and more powerful track (over 7 minutes) on this cd, with long and sensitive riffs; it is one of those tracks that make me sit down, close my eyes, feel and go with the flow....Don't overlook the bluesy "you'll never walk alone" (don't know if it's a tribute to British soccer fans though).

The cast is also impressive : Simon Phillips, David Garfield, John Pena, Carlos Trujillo, Lenny Castro, with Fee Waybill (remember the Tubes?), Richard Page (remember Mr. Mister ?) and David Paich collaborating.

The album was recorded live, for the most part of it, but it doesn't really sound like a live album. The quality of the sound is in fact closer to a good studio recording than anything else. If you like Lukather's style and/or are a collector of Toto's works, in a broad sense, you MUST have this one. After all, Luke IS one of the three greats in this genre, with Jeff Beck and Michael Landau.

5 out of 5 stars Keep on pushing, straight ahead !!!!!!!.......2004-03-23

This album is a greatest hits in itself. It is not the first solo album from Luke like the amazon guy says in his brief presentation. It is the second actually. First came LUKATHER (I own three copies of that album), then came this one CANDYMAN and then followed LUKE, sure the worst among the three (but still nice, different I might judge it). I really really loved the first Luke solo album. It was perfect american hard rock from the eighties. When this one came out, a few years ago actually, I immediatly bought it. I liked it from the very beginning but I can say that each year that pass I love this album more. It is a greatest hits really, each track is phenomenal. The music is a sort of bluesed rock fusion with the Luke trademark guitar playing all around (do you know "Jake to the bone" from Toto's Kingdome of desire album? Well we're very close that kind of music here). It is not an instrumental album. Luke sings every song except the last touching and unforgettable Song for Jeff and Party's in Simon Pants which is a pure fusion-rama. Luke was in splendid shape here and the band is stellar, Phillips, Pena, Garfield, all the Los Lobotomys guys were involved in this album. Infact Candyman came out also under the name of the band, Los Lobotomys with the same track list, the very same artwork. If you want to enjoy this set visually buy the DVD from Steve (the only one under his name). It is a Los Lobotomys concert Luke played with this band playing this material. It is incredible!!! Keep on pushing, STRAIGHT AHEAD LUKE !!! Buy this cd. I mean it. I really mean it. BUY IT. It is fantastic music. Better than a lot of Toto stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Solid 2nd Solo CD from Toto Guitarist.......2004-03-11

This is a great rockin' cd from Steve Lukather. This is a solid follow up to his first solo cd 'Lukather' from 1989. This sounds similar to the music style on Toto's Kingdom of Desire cd from 1992 and Toto's 'Tambu' cd from 1995. Steve has a great backing band on this one including;Simon Phillips of Toto on drums,David Garfield on keyboards,John Pena on bass,Lenny Castro on percussion. Luke lays down some solid guitar rythyms and solos as only he can. There are 11 tracks on this cd,3 being instrumental tunes, and 8 tunes with Steve on lead vocals. A must have for Toto and Luke fans.

5 out of 5 stars CANDYMAN - STEVE LUKATHER.......2003-11-16

Following the tragic passing of his dear friend Jeff Porcaro in 1992, and having taken on Toto's lead vocal duties on the hard rocking Kingdom of Desire album and extensive world tour, Luke turned his considerable energies to his second solo album. His legendary mega session-guitarist status aside, most would recognise Lukather for his Toto ballads "I won't hold you back" and "I'll be over you" (both of which were subsequently sampled for summer anthem dance remixes). Candyman, the title a tribute to his iconic hero Sammy Davis Jnr, allows Lukather to stretch out beyond the more pop/rock orientated Toto material and display his outstanding talents in a completely different context. Demonstrating a new drive and energy in both his vocals and guitar playing, Candyman also features his Los Angeles club jam band Los Lobotomys, with Simon Phillips (who replaced Jeff Porcaro in both Toto and Los Lobotomys), David Garfield and John Pena. Lukather pays homage to Hendrix on a hard rocking cover of "Freedom" with backing vocal assistance from Paul Rodgers (Free/Bad Company). "Red House" is also available on an import release of Candyman, billed as Los Lobotomys. The album features the truly awesome 17/8 frenzy of "Party in Simon's Pants" and according to Lukather, a tribute to Steely Dan in "Born Yesterday". Naturally, Lukather's melancholic and reflective mood is captured in "Borrowed Time", "Never Let Them See You Cry", "Never Walk Alone", "Extinction Blues" and the Jeff Beck inspired emotional outpouring of "Song for Jeff". A ballsy cover of Stephen Stills "The Bomber". "Froth" is reminiscent of the original live all instrumental Los Lobotomys album of 1989. From the first riff of the heavy fusion track "Hero With a 1000 eyes" Candyman sets its stall: a brilliant collection of highly emotional material and the finest musicianship.

Like 1990s guitar wonder-bands such as Los Lobotomys, Karizma, and L.A. Guitar Workshop, this live club recording from two session-masters is a lesson in controlled thuggery. Carlton has played some of the greatest electric solos ever, gunslinging for everyone from Joni Mitchell and The Crusaders to Steely Dan ("Kid Charlemagne") and LA Express. Ex-Toto axe-king Lukather made his name stoking the mega-rock flames, but has also plied his pick to recordings by Patti Austin, Herb Alpert, Chet Atkins, and America.

That fusion has fallen on hard times doesn't deter these two from giving their all in five numbers that display equal moments of bombast, artistry, and occasionally, brilliance. With drummer Greg Bissonette, bassist Chris Kent, and keyboardist Rick Jackson, the band kicks off with the testosterone-addled thump of "The Pump," which initially recalls some escapees from Def Leppard until they settle into a mellow, grand groove and a web of coiled solos. Lukather is more at home in this kind of shredding setting, but that gives Carlton plenty of space to do the lyrical, sensitive-guy thing, while both spin walls of heavy sound on the bruising shuffle, "Don't Give It Up." A reggae-ized "All Blues" sounds a bit street-worn, but then Carlton enters in an understated Jim Hall tone that transforms the song until a schizophrenic speed demon takes over and momentarily kills the intimate vibe. Though No Substitutions will be mostly be gobbled up by guitarists and latent fusion heads, it could also add fire to any listener desiring rocking music to play with the windows rolled down. --Ken Micallef

This is the Collaboration between Carlton and Luke to own.

Sure wish there was a full length set of this on DVD...NOT Paris that does n't cut it.

5 out of 5 stars The forgotten Larry Carlton.......2007-03-31

In recent (1998-present) years, Larry Carlton has been paying the bills as a working member of Fourplay, the "Smooth Jazz" (shudder) super-ensemble featuring Nathan East, Bob James and Harvey Mason. But don't forget this one critical fact: He can STILL pound the average rock guitarist into a fine powder! Here, he's paired with Toto's Steve Lukather, and it's a pretty even match. Jeff Beck's "The Pump" is the perfect showcase for some back-and-forth pyrotechnics. Fourplay has served up some fine tracks, as well as a big helping of "Quiet Storm" GARBAGE. This is a live recording from the guy who powered MANY of Steely Dan's hits...a guy who is more well-rounded than his Fourplay resume would suggest. Lukather's no slouch either. Get this, as well as the DVD, and you WILL NOT be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Toto is Alive and AMAZING!.......2006-10-02

Why does Amazon, as well as some of the reviewers, refer to Steve 'Luke' Lukateher as "ex-Toto guitarist"? Obviously uninformed Americans (I live in California). Toto is HUGE everywhere in the world but the US, but I just saw them in LA (9/2006) and they were phenominal. Hot Tip, the new album 'Falling in Between' is outrageous. And as for this album of Carlton and Lukather, I believe it won the Grammy for best instrumental album of the year!

5 out of 5 stars It's NOT just a "Guitarist" album..........2005-01-29

I'm not going to echo everyone else's raves here, as I agree with them. It's a shame, though, that Greg Bissonette has received virtually no mention in the previous reviews. Guitar Tour de Force that this effort is, Greg's drumming accompanying Lukather and Carlton is phenomenal! He is Mister Chops as far as I'm concerned, yet his playing is never intrusive or overdone. He has exquisite taste throughout this CD, and gets the chance to shine briefly toward the end of the second track ( as does the keyboard player, who might have been featured at least once more in this set ). This is the model for a drum solo: short, fiery and to the point. Top-notch band. Live jazz albums in an intimate club setting don't get better than this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Superstar Debut!.......2006-07-25

A stomach churning example of a record company ruining a classic album. If left to his own devices one wonders what Lukather would have come up with. Unforunately he was forced by executives to throw an unhealthy amount of Pop dross into the mix. Of course that can be no bad thing when you're Steve, since they are all played out with the usual customary excellence. It's just a pity that he wasn't allowed to make his own decisions when sorting out the material to use. The album starts with Twist The Knife, which is a fantastic opener for fans of hard driving Funk/Rock and the pace is kept up with the memorable Swear Your Love, a very hard edged AOR number featuring Richard Marx. The next track, Fall Into Velvet is a guitar Opus featuring the talents of Steve Stevens and inexplicably; Jan Hammer who's keyboard is tuned to trade off tasty runs against these two duelling soloists. I suppose it could be considered to be Steve's very own Stairway To Heaven. Drive A Crooked Road plays like ZZ-Top on steroids as Lukather gets down to business with a song that is a clever vehicle for some straight forward and blistering axemanship, with Jeff Porcaro providing the razor sharp backbeat on the skins. Unfortunately, the album takes an unwelcome change of pace when the Pop element rears it's head. In fact the rest of the album features only two main highlights which are Lonely Beat Of My Heart. All the big guns come out for this one. Co-written with Diane Warren, and featuring Richard Marx once again with old band mate David Paich providing some classic organ. A Brian May type solo is the cherry on top of this cake. The other highlight, Turns To Stone is the only straight Ballad on the album and features a Neil Schon inspired solo, simple keyboards and Steve's best vocal since I'll Be Over You. This number is the real heart and sole of the album. As for the rest; Got My Way, Second Chance, Darkest Night Of The Year, Looks Like Rain and Stepping On Top Of Your World can only be described as keyboard driven, kiddie rock with a hard edge which is a real shame. The songs are saved though, by excellent harmonies, choruses and guitar work. Alright if you like that kind of thing, but a debut is not to be messed with. Put the blame on Sony. Well, in summing up I can say the album is still imminently listenable and even the lighter elements are light years away from the trash filling the charts today. In fact many of the tunes deserve to be number ones in their own right. You certainly won't be disappointed with this purchase and any guitar fan will be over the moon. One final point to mention is that the production and sound are not the best and it would definitely benefit from a Remastering.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Lukather is a songwriting machine!!.......2006-04-22

Steve Lukather is simply one of the greatest musicians and songwriters of all time. He is mainly famous for being Toto's guitarist and one of the most recorded session artists of all time. He wrote these songs with some of his fellow session artists (Mike Landau, Steve Stevens) and some of his famous songwriting friends (Richard Marx, Dianne Warren). The result is a collection of guitar-driven rocks songs and power ballads that are very hooky. I love this album and recommend this as essential listening for Steve Lukather fans.

    5 out of 5 stars Lukather.......2004-08-25

The first time I heard this album about 10 years ago, I felt that it was just another boring rock album without much good material. But years later when I bought it, after being crazy about Toto for about a hundred years, I listened to it carefully. This album really rocks!! For serious musicians, this is really a masterpiece which we can base our foundation on progressive rock. It really takes lots of skill and inspiration to be able to play like Steve. I've admired him since I heard him on Toto's Farenheit. I'm working hard to be able to play like him.....although I've got a really long way to go....not to mention his great vocals. I'm really glad I bought this album now cos now I can truly appreciate the great pieces within. Rock on Steve!!

2 out of 5 stars Luke in 1989....not his best era!.......2004-06-04

In 1994 I bought this album and actually thought it was very cool for some time. But....times and musical tastes have changed for me, and today I find this album to be quite a bore. I admit that Lukes vocals and his guitarplaying is great as always and songs such as It looks like rain, Fall into velvet and the very poppy Lonely beat of my heart are very good listenable songs. But apart from the fact that I find many of the songs to be very uninspiring, the sound is just plain annoying. Man, the whole record seems "drowned" in reverb, and furthermore, Lukes guitar is terribly overeffected, which he himself also admitted through some interviews in the 90es.

If you feel the same way I do, I highly recommend spending your money on his 1997-album "Luke", which has great, raw, fantastic sound, honest lyrics and wonderful harmonies and vocals!!!

5 out of 5 stars This one will blow you away!!.......2006-11-01

I have been a huge Toto fan since the 70's and have all of their albums. While most bands of this era have their best work behind them, I must say that other than Toto IV, this is their absolute best work! I bought this CD the day it was released as an import, and I was blown away then, and with every subsequent listen. Every song is outstanding, but "Bottom of Your Soul" and "Spritual Man" are probably two of the best songs ever recorded - by anyone! I was fortunate enough to see Toto on July 4th in Blue Ash, OH (a free concert, nonetheless)and I must say this is one of my favorite concerts of all time. Luke was unbelievable, and the rest of the band was as tight as ever. I certainly did miss David, but Greg is a tremendous addition to the band. I only hope these guys will tour the US again soon. Buy this CD - you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars king of the world with no end in sight ToTo.......2006-06-23

Im listening right now to 'no end in sight' which is a great song, words, music, its just burns from start to finish! the singing is just great and and if this was the 80's this would be on the radio and be a big hit,'King of the world' one more great song , the song just comes together with everyone doing there part ,Spiritual Man' this is a soft slow song that takes you on a long hard ride and when your done you want more, the horns add so much and the trading of singing parts is the key that makes it work so well.'Falling in between' is a little harder and really is far out there but fits on this cd tho,
this is a great cd and if your a fan of toto than you wont be sorry you get it, if you have a chance to go see them in person than that would be good also cos you wont be disapointed at all they are a great live band and you will get your money's worth plus more,

4 out of 5 stars An Album That Will Grow On You.......2006-06-05

As a loyal Toto fan, I've purchased both the strong and weak albums. "Falling In Between" does exactly what the title says - it's not their best effort, yet it's not bad either.

As far as the musicianship goes, the members of Toto are technical monsters. This album truly demonstrates their skills in both the solos and little riffs that bridge the verses. The best parts of each piece are the instrumental sections. Creativity is at its best, both melodically and harmonically.

As a collaborative effort, this one touches the sky. All of the members play a part in writing the tunes (almost all take a hand at singing) and even a few members from the past are brought back - Steve Porcaro, Joseph Williams. James Pankow (Chicago) wrote a steller brass arrangement in "Dying on Me Feet" and Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) adds his prowess in "Hooked."

Thematically & lyrically, Toto has chosen some tough topics and does a nice job in delivering their messages - addictions, the war in Iraq, victims of Sudan... Another nice touch in the liner notes, each song has a few comments about it by the members.

One of the downsides to the album is that the majority of the melodies tend to be repetitive. "Hooked," for example, repeats the same three notes over and over again in the chorus; chord structures are at a minimum, with the exception of the instrumental section. Another example of overdone repetition is the David Paich tune, "Spiritual Man." The chord progression, I-V-ii-I-V, over a four measures, is played throughout the entire 5'23" song. That is a bit much.

Secondly, Toto seems to be taking a more liberty with explicit language. Granted, it could be worse, but it's not really necessary. They can easily get their point across without them and be more poetic.

Most of all, I don't feel that some of the pieces develop to their fullest potential; it seems like things were a bit hurried. The title track is an awesome tune, with the mixed meter and cool rhythms. The form: verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, instrumental - where's the recap of the chorus? the main theme?

"Dying on My Feet's" instrumental in the middle and the Pankow arrangment don't fit with the music of the chorus and verse. It would have been better if Pankow's brass were interspersed throughout the song, leaving the final soli as a climax to the piece.

"Simple Life" - an awesome Lukather ballad that seems to be cut short: V, V, C - that's all you get. It leaves you wanting more, but also wondering why he didn't add an instrumental then build with a final chorus. "Spiritual Man" - how does Coltrane and Christ on the same level? Hmmmm... "Reeferman" - great tune...too bad it wasn't longer.

They are truly skilled musicians that have produced a wealth of great material. Not all of Beethoven's works are admired by scholars, yet he's considered the pinnacle of composers. Though I may have seemed a bit critical, the album does grow on a person the more one listens to it. At any rate, if you've liked Toto in the past, this album is worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars They're back in excellent form!.......2006-04-22

What else can I say that was not said by the other reviewers? Just buy it and you will see... Great album, great performances. So sad it didn't have more songs...

5 out of 5 stars The Return Of Toto!!!.......2006-04-01

Veteran rock band Toto has returned with "Falling In Between", their first studio album in four years and their first with all new original material since 1999's "Mindfields". This is also their first album with new keyboardist Greg Phillinganes. While he is new to the band, Greg is no stranger to the music biz having worked with an endless roster of musicians over the last 30 years ranging from Eric Clapton to Michael Jackson and Phil Collins among many others.
With their latest album, we find Toto continuing to hone their chops and progress musically. If anything, the band is stronger and vital than ever and the album shows a definite resurgence in their musical powers.
The opening title track leans on the recent wave of progressive rock heard from bands such as Spock's Beard and Dream Theater. It is a hard-driving mix of shifting time signatures, straight-forward rock and Eastern influences. Singer Bobby Kimball's voice has definitely not lost any magic here either.
Elsewhere on the album are classic Toto moments such as "Dying On My Feet", "King Of The World" and "Bottom Of Your Soul" which features a guest appearance from former Toto lead singer Joseph Williams. The presence of his voice brings back fond memories of the way Toto sounded in the late '80s and sounds like a "Seventh One" outtake.
The album also has its share of rocking moments. "Hooked" lays down a driving groove while "Taint Your World" pays homage to Van Halen with its fast-paced shuffle rhythms and Steve Lukather's stellar guitar work. For the Van Halen buffs out there, this track sounds a lot like "I'm The One" from the first VH album.
There are also a few musical U-turns here which are heard in "Let It Go" - a Steely Dan-like number in which Greg Phillinganes sings lead in a soulful R&B style - and in the gospel-tinged "Spiritual Man" which could be Toto's first foray into Christian rock. There's some great vocal work from keyboardist David Paich, Bobby Kimball as well as Greg Phillinganes on this track.
For the diehard Toto fans, the Japanese version of "Falling In Between" features a short bonus track entitled "The Reeferman". All drug references aside, this brief instrumental piece finds Toto branching into Miles Davis territory with a vamped fusion groove and a great trumpet lead from Jazz legend Roy Hargrove.
"Falling In Between" is an album that will definitely satisfy the most elite Toto fan. The album is loaded with ear-catching hooks and melodies as well as fantastic musicianship from all the members of the band. While there are some guest appearances from such noted talents as James Pankow and Jason Scheff (both from Chicago) as well as Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson and the above-mentioned Joseph Williams, "Falling In Between" is definitely a "band effort". You can hear it in every track here. While the album will probably not be anywhere near as successful as their earlier work, "Falling In Between" will definitely be another hit with Toto's solid fan base.
    Another instant classic from Toto!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-03-12

While i would stop short in saying that it has better songs than I Cant Stop The Rain and Dont You Let Me Down on his first solo,i can say this is a better overall effort.
It contains a Gene Simmons song called Feels Like Heaven, which he was so kind as to let Peter have.I am surprized that Kiss didnt actually do that song as its quite a good song.
I cannot find a bad song here.I actually bought this album in about 1985.It was as rare as anything in those days.News of what Kiss was doing was scarce, let alone ex members, there was a heavy metal shop in Melbourne central. But i'd hardly call this heavy metal.Problem was this album crashed initially as far as record sales went.I got it as an import, and i was glad i did cause i realy enjoyed this album better than any of his other solo's.
Went through a patch and just kept playing it,but the radio stations refused to have anything to do with Kiss in those days.1982 was a bad year to release this album.
Going through the tracks in this album he realy did a fine job at picking some emotional tracks like Tears,Jealous Guy(which is different to the other versions ive heard but still quite good),Let Me Rock You(I realy like this tune)and First Day In The Rain which are all excellent.
Also he had some good disco/rock type tracks here like Let It Go,Destiny,Some Kinda' Hurricane and Bad Boys, not a bad song here.
It was a while till he released another solo after this, but it wasnt because this was a bad album.

    5 out of 5 stars Peter Criss's Greatest Album!.......2005-02-28

After releasing two phenomenal solo albums in 1978 and 1980, Peter Criss returned to the studio to record the greatest album of his solo career, 1982s "Let Me Rock You." Joining Peter is his third solo venture was the great songwritter Russ Ballard (the writer of Ace's remake of "New York Groove"). Taking the producer's chair once again was Peter's personal favorite, Vinnie Poncia. Together, this trio put together a marvelous album that is too good to put into words. The song-writting is top-notch and Peter's vocals are the best they have ever been. His vocals are the cleanest on this album than any of his other previous work. Better than any other album he's recorded with KISS or solo. The whole album is truly magnificent. The sound of this album is more rock and roll and mixed in is the piano, the brass and the synthesizer that Peter uses very well. This album can please anyone and it is probably one of my favorite albums I have ever bought.

The opening track, "Let It Go" is an excellent piece of Rock and Roll. Great vocals by Peter and the guitar riffs are excellent. This is one of Peter's best songs to date. The next track, "Tears" was in fact co-written by former KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent and also plays guitar on this track. This is very powerful semi-ballad. The song moves at a solid pace with a very powerful instrumentals backing up Peter's voice. The next track, "Move On Over" was written by Criss and Poncia. These two make a great songwriting pair. This is the greatest dance song Peter Criss has ever written. This is very solid rock and roller that contains heavy guitar solos and is a true masterpiece as it instantly become another Peter Criss classic.

The next track, "Jealous Guy", a track originally performed by John Lennon, Criss did an excellent job in remaking this rock classic. Peter's vocals are truly magnificent and he did an excellent job recreating the feel and emotion to Lennon's original version. The next track, "Destiny" is a very heavy rock and roller. The song is about meeting the love of your life and how it all happens because of destiny. The lead guitar truly shines here. Listen to the sample and you'll know what I mean. Another excellent classic is, "Some Kinda' Hurricane" is one of the songs that Russ Ballard wrote. The song is very heavy instrumentally and heavy on Peter's vocals. Another instant classic right here! The title track, "Let Me Rock You" is actually a 1950s style doo wop. Peter does a marvelous job on this song and he captured the style of doo wop very well.

Track eight, the second ballad of the album, "First Day In the Rain" is a good Peter ballad, but not his absolute best. Another song about being out on his own again. The next track, "Feel Like Heaven" was actually written by Gene Simmons. This is a lighter heavy metal track that sounds great with Peter's jazzy style voice over those guitars. Finally, the last track, "Bad Boys" is a track that Peter based on his childhood and advice his mother would give him as a child, "Don't go where the BAD BOYS go." This is light-sounding track and is the the second slowest song on the album but still is another unique Peter Criss song.

This album is without a doubt is Peter Criss's greatest moment as a solo artist and no one can say any different. I was hooked on this album as soon as I listened to it one time fully. I've owned this album for only 1 day and here I am already telling you how great this is. It's so good, don't even bother listening to samples of the songs. This is not an album that takes a while to get used to or anything like that. On this album, the Catman sinks his claws into you. Just sit back and let Peter Criss rock you away! Rock on, Catman!

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL MOMENT FROM THE CAT-ALOGUE.......2005-01-03

This CD is essential and may surprise many doubters and nay-sayers who have dismissed Peter as the least capable Kiss member past and present. Peter Criss excudes charisma on this one with a stylish collection of material that still stands up today some 20 odd years plus. Having possibly accepted that he was not the greatest songwriter, he opted wisely for a collection of his own work and some contemporary writers such as Russ Ballard. Neither the best vocalist or drummer it is the heart and soul that draws the listener in. Highlights abound and the styles are varied. "Let It Go" is a great opener somewhat reminisant of Dynasty's "Dirty Living". It is the next cab off the rank in the Vinnie Vincent (then known as Vincent Cusano) penned "Tears" that is the stella highlight. This is the best songs Peter has put his vocals too bar non, and could have been with some push a radio hit. One assumes this song was recommended to Criss by the label during the early recording sessions for the masked ones "Creatures" opus. Indeed "Feel Like Heaven" was penned by Gene Simmons although that song feels as if it were derived from the "Unmasked" and "Dynasty" eras and is nowhere near as good. "First Day In The Rain" is sublime too both emotive and atmospheric being a dreamy ballad no way insipid in inspiration like "Beth". The title track "Let Me Rock You" is fifties doo wop and is kitchy but likeable too, reminding me a little of Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl'. The closer of "Bad Boys" is an obvious nod to the Stones and is possibly the best Criss penned number to date. Obviously ignored by a label and a record buying public who had out grown Kiss let alone the ex drummer, it is a real shame because "Let Me Rock You" was accessible pop rock with a slight eighties feel that deserved huge sales. Certainly more accessible than ever before.

4 out of 5 stars Criss rock and roll over........2004-07-02

Criss is here far from the Kiss sound. But it doesnt matter. Its
a little improvment from the Out of Control album, and it sounds fresh in todays music. Kiss producer Vini Poncia has taken over the production, and the soundpicture is pure magic. Its sympho rock, espesially on Track 2 Tears. Let it go Track 1 is more rock and roll. Move on Over Track 3 its more simple. He also have
a go on the John Lennon hit Jealous Guy. Eat youre heart out Brian Ferry, who also had a minor hit with this one. Track 5 Destiny has a certain quality over it, but its not Criss on his best. Track 6 Somekinda hurricane, is a real rocker, fast and moving towards a climax of pure rock orgasm. Track 7 Let me Rock you, is the title track, and been out for a surprise. Criss doing doooo op, and its doesnt sounds like rock, is pure pop with the sound from the sixteees. This is a treat, and earfriendly. Pure joy. More or less. Track 8 First day in the rain is a ballad, but its not up to it`s usuall standard. Track 9
Feel like heaven is back on what we can called a "light heavy metal track". Track 10 Bad Boys is rythm and blues and its interesting. Over all Its time for a new Solo album from Peter Criss. Peter Criss will surely rock you on this one.

Look up in the sky, is that Santa's flying sleigh or a Gibson Flying V? In what is the year's best play on the sentimental Santa season, Steve Lukather and his distinguished axemen like Slash, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen and others such as Edgar Winter, mix up the pyro-techniques from the day with the merriments and potholes of the season in what also could be called SantaMetal. The guys do a fair amount of improvising here and there in a combination soft-jazz-hard-rock fusion that runs from the furious to fanciful. Visiting "Carol of the Bells," "Joy to the World," and "Silent Night" among the 10 tracks here, the guys never met a piano section they didn't love to solo over. Even when they go for the bloozey, down-and-out effect on "Broken Heart at Christmas," or warn, "Look Out for Angles," the spirit of the season and mingling of like-minded guitar slingers can't mask how much fun they're really having in the jingle gym. And that's a fairly sentimental notion even a grinch could detect, however manic it sounds at times. -- Martin Keller

    4 out of 5 stars A Christmas album that isn't lame!!!.......2006-11-10

Right off the bat, understand you're not going to like this album if you are looking for sappy, overly emotive music sung by the Diva-of-the-month. That said, when you listen to this album, ask yourself, "Self, if I were going to make a Christmas album that doesn't sound like every other lame Christmas album out there, how would I do it." And your answer might be to cash in every favor from every accomplished professional studio guy out there, and have some fun. If you listen to the album in that way...it's surprisingly satisfying.

I won't reiterate the list of fantastic musicians and their great work, all done within six days in the middle of June, was it? Others have listed the particulars, so read their reviews, too. It Ain't Toto for Sure, but If You Are a Toto Fan and Lean Toward Some of their Louder Rock Pieces, Then this Disc is Absolutely Essential for Your Collection.

5 out of 5 stars Can this guy put anything out that is bad.......2007-07-16

The cool thing about Steve's music is that he can do any style out there....This CD seems a bit more mellow that is first two CD's. Although I like the get out and rock it hard style from his first two CD's this is by no means a bad CD.....I love everything that this guy does....Keep the music comming

5 out of 5 stars LUUUUUUUUUKE! Love Ya Man, And I mean that baby!.......2007-05-19

Steve Lukather, or as his fans call him, Luke, is one of the greatest guitar players of all time, period. If you love guitar you owe it to yourself to get all of his solo albums as well as his work with Los Lobotomys and even El Grupo. This is a whole different thing than Toto. Toto is a great band as well, but that is his more commercial side. You should see him live to really appreciate his amazing talent, it is undeniable. Some of your favorite, well respected, bands have benefited from his guitar work as one of the biggest session guitar players of all time. As well as his guitar work, his voice is one of the best in rock.

    5 out of 5 stars Introspective!.......2006-07-25

In Lukather's own words, he was not looking to make a guitar shredding album and if you buy it for that reason you may be disappointed with many of the deliberate mistakes left on tape. Look instead for an album of substance where the guitar is just a part of the overall and muddy grunge sound that showcases the lyrics and you'll know what to expect. Consider it a male menopausal offering from Steve and perhaps the nearest thing to a confessional your likely to hear from him. The mood is the same for most of the album and of all his solo releases it is the most consistent in tone. The songs all have heavy atmosphere and there is a great deal of depth and soul searching on display. In parts almost unbearably painful, manically depressive and yet somehow life affirming. If you're a fortysomething You will appreciate the brutal honesty on display here. The haunting, Tears Of My Own Shame sounds like the older sibling of Wings Of Time, the only TOTO song I can think of that matches the theme of this album. There are some happier moments however with the excellent and upbeat, Reservations To Live. Anyone looking for a TOTO fix will also be pleased with the outstanding anthemic ballad, Open Your Heart To Me. On a personal level, the highlight of the album for me was Hate Everything About You. A lilting Irish melody wrapped around a beautiful solo. All in all, an album with a message. You'll be glad you made the effort to tune in and listen.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant songwriter, superb guitarist - whats not to like.......2006-03-20

I was never a TOTO fan and despite some 700 or so guitar orientated cd's, I had never even looked at STEVE LUKATHER. My loss it seems as this is an awesome cd with excellent songs and some jaw dropping guitar work. Almost every song gets under your skin and the airguitar gets a heavy workout when dancing around the living room while singing the hook laden refrains.
If you like POWER / POP / ROCK, this is a no brainer and is sure to please. I think this has far more substance than any TOTO release I've ever heard, which might be why some TOTO fans don't like this offering. It's their loss.

    5 out of 5 stars LUKE - STEVE LUKATHER.......2003-11-16

Steve Lukather's 3rd solo album is, in his own words, "...a bit of a departure...this record is the closest amalgamation of all the different facets of me than anything I have recorded in the past..." LUKE encompasses a variety of catchy tunes, intense flavours, raw sounds and awesome playing; it also features inspired songwriting collaborations with Fee Waybill, Phil Soussan, Randy Goodrum and Rodney Crowell. The record kicks off with the dark, gutsy and driven riff of The real truth. Cool hook, great harmony vocals and a mindblowing guitar solo. My personal favourite is Love the things you hate, another monster groove with Gregg Bissonette and Phil Soussan, enhanced by Luke's own electric sitar performance. Tears of my own shame is Hendrix-esque and Hate everything about you is Dylan-esque; the album also includes Stephen Stills' Bluebird. In addition to vocal, guitar and sitar, Luke plays a variety of vintage keyboards and harmonica which add a spectrum of interesting tones and colours. In addition to contributing his sublime talents to hundreds of top 40 records, Steve Lukather is a musicians' musician. For me, this record is the epithesis of that talent. Get your teeth stuck into this one!

    5 out of 5 stars Old Fan!.......2006-12-22

I cannot believe this is available. I loved this album when I was just a teen. I loved "No more I love you's" way, way before Annie Lennox covered it. I love her but, the original is by far my favorite. This song is a little darker than the rest of the album. It has a passionate feel to it. I own the vinyl but I haven't been able to find it on cd till now.
I cannot really compare the sound to another band, they are unique in my opinion. I love it for sentimental reasons also.

    3 out of 5 stars 80's Timepiece.......2005-12-06

Even Annie Lennox making a cover hit out of "No More I Love You's" could keep this album out of the "Shame It's Out-of-Print" File. Comprised of David Freeman and Joseph Hughes and produced by 80's and 90's alt maestro Jimmy Iovine, The Lover Speaks put out this album in 1986, toured briefly with the Eurythmics, then broke up after their sophomore effort was canned by their label. This is saccharine in spots, and the almost omnipresent high-pitched female backing vocalist gets a bit old, but there are some gloriously melodic moments, especially on "This Can't Go On!" It's a bit of an 80's time capsule, so if you enjoyed the poppier artists off the beaten path in that era, The Lover Speaks is worth picking up.

---David Freeman, lead singer for THE LOVER SPEAKS, was the haunting voice with Alison Moyet on "Sleep Like Breathing" from her RAINDANCING release in the 1980s. This album is steeped in pained romance and loss. Eloquent lines like "I desire you, my absent one," "I am a spy spying on myself, a tragic subject," "I used to be lunatic from your precious face," and "Nervous flirtings of a modern soneteer, still faking this art of love" filtered through Freeman's rich and full baritone, and wrapped in deceptively complicated and unforgettable British pop stylings of the late 80s.
---If you love the "new romance" movement within British New Wave - including THE COLOURFIELD, CHINA CRISIS, EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL, STYLE COUNCIL, ALISON MOYET, and many more - this album belongs in your collection. If you have a tendency to stew in your own pain and tears after a breakup, this album, a candle, and a full bottle of intoxicating spirits are just what you need. Freeman's lyrics are sentimental, sometimes sappy, occasionally cryptic, and often cynical. You'll be writing florid love letters to your ex-lovers in no time flat.
---If you are a huge 80s hair band or hardcore punk afficionado, this album may not be for you. For the wide and avid group of fans, music from THE LOVER SPEAKS still endures and we enjoy turning on new listeners to the sound whenever possible.
---Freeman headed up THE LOVER SPEAKS and after a cassette of the project traveled through the hands of THE EURYTHMICS Dave Stewart and ended up in the hands of Jimmy Iovine, the group was signed. Two albums were produced, but this is the only one that was released.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting!!!! Emotionally power-packed!!!.......2005-08-18

David Freeman's only published musical work. Harkons back to an era in music where melodrama and intensity in pop music was just about coming to an end.
Freeman's deep and crisp tenor/baritone is ripe with emotion and lushness. The original "no more I love yous" by far eclipses Annie Lennox's remake, with its overlapping and seering backing harmonies accompanied by suprising key changes.
The rest of the album is also ripe with mid-80's synth/pop balladry and uptempo rock tracks!!!! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars No More "I Love You's".......2005-06-25

I'm generally dead against reviewing an album which I haven't heard in full, but since nobody else wrote anything about this one I feel I should make just one note here. This self-titled album by an entirely forgotten one-album band contains the original version of the beautiful ballad 'No More "I Love You's"', which was covered wonderfully and to great success by Annie Lennox in 1995 and released as a single, as well as part of her covers-only second album, Medusa, immediately becoming her biggest hit as a solo artist. The original version is quite similar to Annie's version, but not quite as emotionally poignant, and sung by a man. Since I've never heard anything else by The Lover Speaks I'm not able to recommend it or not, but to the best of my knowledge, this track is the only thing worth remembering about them. If you're a huge Annie Lennox fan and would like to hear the original song, you might want to seek this out.
