5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

4 out of 5 stars Holds up to repeated listenings..........2006-08-27

I liked this more than I thought I would. I was very happy with the balance of prog and heavy sounds. These guys can really play, and it shows. It's very song oriented though, and that's a good thing because the songs are good. The vocals are unobjectionable (well, that means good considering they're from Sweden). I thought the guitar would be a bit better, it's good on average; kind of Uli Jon Roth 'light'. Johan is very talented & I hope to hear him develop more in the future into the monster that some of this material hints at...he's just not there yet in my opinion. This is still better than most prog currently out there, and not boring or tedious as so much of it ends up being.

4 out of 5 stars Progressive Alternative?.......2006-08-16

Regarding the vocalist, I didn't like most of it too much but thanks for the variety, the vocals really stood out and I can't get them out of my head... no matter what I do... thanks.

This album is one of the best that I ever took a chance on. It has many elements that you wish some new DT albums had to them. They jam well; kind of in the style of 'Images and Words' or 'Awake'. I'm noticing also a lack of the usual "vocal hook" in the songs that make them memorable. THis is mostly due to the vocalist style or maybe just me not repetatively listening to it. Anyway, you know you'll never forget "...will never be heard from again..." (Dream Theater) or "...triumphant champion of Ithica..." (Symphony X) or any chorus sung by Lance King in any Balance of Power album. The vocals on 'The Perfect Element I' (Pain of Salvation) are what draws you into the musical theme and the heart and soul of the album. This is not the case with 'Extension' though. The vocals do have a defining moment to them in the title track but was more of a letdown to me at first because they have that moody "alternative" feel to them and not the high soaring metal power that I've gotten used to from bands offering the same music style. It reminded me alot of "Disconnected" by Fates Warning, or that low non-aggressive singing on some of Tourniquet's "Crawl to China" - good music but just missing that power punch.

Track 1 punches you in the face with it's odd meter and its guitar lickiness. This is good prog...my second favorite track.
Track 2 This has alot of DT type songwriting and arrangement, I love this song. The guitar solo is admirable and aggressive too!
Track 3 has some really heavy parts, maybe downtuned. This band really likes to count to seven. He really sonds like some alternative grunge guy with his bangs covering his eyes here - The Cure with a more manly band backing him up.
Track 4 is the best. It's their instrumental(!). It's got some truly dirty pentatonic blues riffage that makes me want to listen over and over...Very funky! It's kind of a twisted version of "Frankenstien" for us prog addicts. The only thing missing is the crybaby wah pedal guitar solo.
Track 5 starts off very explosive and has some very good vocal action in it. The chorus has some seriously Rob Zombie sounding "I'm more evil than you" stuff in it too. I really like the singing during the break. It's an all around pentatonic hardcore sounding song with that added demention of a keyboard/synth.
Track 6 is the longest track and it's the title track. It's also where the singer starts sounding alot like the dude form Social Distortion. I say this is the low point of the album, but it's also the only part I hum to myself all day long. It kind of shows the catch-22 duality of stuff you think you don't like. It's catchy because it's so odd and out of place and it's not what you would have wanted to hear. The main progression with vocals sounds like a teenage grunge band made it up... but this is surrounded by some excellent musicianship nonetheless so I got over it.
Track 7 This is a pretty good tune too. The singer turns into Geoff Tate in "Silent Lucidity" for the verses and becomes more alternative again everywhere else.

One good thing could come of this whole alternative/grunge style of singing. It could be an opportunity to get your Alternative/grunge music loving friend converted to a form of music that isn't centered around depression, anger, victim mentalities, self pity, drugs, drunkeness and useless conflict all the time. He/she may become interested in bands that actually can play instruments and read books. Spread the news.

4 out of 5 stars A good debut album.......2006-08-07

Andromeda's debut, "Extension of the Wish" is a fine album featuring a blend of progressive, metal and hard rock. The album has a studio singer sitting in, somewhat unusual but with good quality.

Guitarist, Johan Reinholtz is at times showy but is in John Petrucci-land in terms of technique and for the most part, tone, but most important, in his ability to switch geers and know when to play melodic rather than full bore solo mode. I am not by the CD but the keyboards are played with similar qualities to guitar. These two should stick together forever as they have a great sense of filling musical spaces and working exceptionally well with one another.

Reinholtz could do well spending a bit more time programming his effects as many were cheesy presets. It's like having a wonderful meal with a course of Spam, the effects aren't often necessary and take away from his skillful playing.

In terms of songwriting, I'm happy to say it is nicely innovative although to make a complete album with songs that start and end near perfectly made me a bit annoyed with the fade-out ending, of all things, on the closing song, "Arch Angel".
There are some other very small issues which keep the CD from getting 5 stars out of me, but I'd recommend this album to anyone that enjoys their progressive heavy or their metal on the progressive side.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-05-23

The music on the CD is perfect. Excellent guitar, drums and keyboard.

The only thing that keeps this CD from getting a 5 star rating is the singer. Some of his singing becomes almost unbearable, its not in tune with the music at all, and his voice is just plain annoying. If you've heard Spiral Architect and didn't like their singers voice, you probably won't like this guys voice.

Other than that, Amazing CD!

5 out of 5 stars Prog metal from Sweden that really shreds!.......2006-04-22

Wow, quite simply, wow! Guitarist Johan Reinholdz can burn up the fret board with the best of them. His pyrotechnics are impressive to say the least. The guitar sound is part classic rock, part neo-classical-metal. His riffing and solos never sound forced or inappropriate to the music, they fit rather nicely. The rest of the band is very tight and they fit together exceptionally well. There are quite a bit of great guitar / keyboard interplays. They are also quite heavy and do have some similarities to Dream Theater. Thankfully they have enough of their own style as not to sound like a derivative or copy. In fact, if you liked DT's Train of Thought kind of heavy, then this is your band. They are more proggy than DT was on that album, which is a good thing. For a debut album, this is extremely impressive stuff. It's one of a very few prog-metal debut albums in the last 15 years that hit the ground running, never missing a step. I highly recommend this one to people that really like the prog- metal on the heavy side without forgetting its prog sensibilities.

Album Description

Energetic, Electrifying, Immortal - just some of the words used to describe Magic Circle Music recording artists, Feinstein! And with this summer's release of the album Third Wish, a new era of slash and burn is certain to ignite for the man behind the name David "Rock" Feinstein!

The moniker should not only ring a bell in the minds of true metal devotees, but also leave famished metal fans quivering in anticipation. As the original guitarist with the band Elf (the group that eventually became Richie Blackmore's Rainbow) and the lead guitarist/vocalist with the now legendary heavy-metal trio The Rods (purveyors of sinfully molten metal), David "Rock" Feinstein has certainly assured himself a name in the annals of rock `n' roll. His barnstorming, take-no-prisoners style of guitar playing shredded the grooves of The Rods eponymously-titled debut album, waving the banner flag for the New Wave of Heavy Metal that thundered through the `80s. And now comes the band Feinstein, with "Rock's" guitar once again taking unshakable and determined control, delivering both robust blows and disciplined caresses in equal yet magnetic proportions. The man seems inbred with rock `n' roll fever. Fans of The British New Wave Of Heavy Metal will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Metal Blender on "High".......2006-02-17

I have never heard of any of these guys...Then I went on a ski trip w/ a bunch a guys and John West was among them. I saw another dude w/ a Feinstien T-shirt and thought,"whotf is that?".Then I heard John sing and play accoustic guitar w/ four or five other guys and was really impressed. Still, I never suspected he was such a good metal vocalist, 'till my copy of this CD arrived. &%$# COOL!!! I can't wait to check out more of his stuff.
About this disc: Holy crap....think of every great metal band you've ever heard and throw 'em all in a blender. What you get is a collection of great guitar riffs, excellent melodies, very diverse vocals,(John sounds like Jo lyn Turner one minute, Don Dokken the next, and at other times Bruce Dickinson...pretty cool sheeet.
The percussion is very solid throughout.
I'm not even through the whole disc yet and my fav is 3rd wish, but like other reviewers I suspect after heavy rotation that may change. Did I mention David Feinstein plays like a chameleon? This guy can jam...He can sound like whom ever he wants at will. If I had to say one guy he sounds like it would be Glen Tipton,( and you know that guy can jam...)
Yeah, I'm glad I got this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal cds in a long time..........2005-08-27

David "Rock" Feinstein has been around a long time in the rock/metal scene where he has left an impressive mark with the bands Elf and The Rods. He has not been a huge factor in the music scene as of late choosing to concentrate on running his fine resturant in Cortland, NY "The Hollywood". With the release of "Third Wish" Rock, vocalist John West(Artension, Royal Hunt) and band have created a metal monster that brings back many of the elements of classic 70's-80's metal as well as some new twists. Feinstein's influences are obvious on this outing: Riot, Rainbow, Dio with some Rods thrown in for good measure. The result is an ass kicking assault of classic metal with excellent guitar playing, fine vocals and a backing band that gels well with Rock and West. Also I might add fine production by Joey Demaio(another blast from the metal past) and Feinstein as well. Stand out tracks include "Rule The World", Streaming Star" and the metal masterpiece title track which with any radio play would go down as one of the best metal tunes in the past fifteen years. This is a breath of fresh air in today's metal/hard rock market. If classic hard rock is your thing pick this cd up and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars BEST CD of 2004.......2005-05-27

This CD, reaffirms my faith in American Hard Rock / Metal. Of all the genres of CD's that I've heard in 2004, this still has to be one of my favorites. Excellent from start to finish, and that is a rarity in today's market! Rock Feinstein (Of Elf and the Rods fame, and Ronnie Dio's cousin) has done something VERY special here. This CD should be in EVERY music lover's collection. You WON'T be dissappointed!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Metal Album of 2004.......2005-02-01

Wow. this CD hasn't left my player in weeks. It is quite possibly the best metal CD of 2004.

For lovers of the classic metal sound of Dio, Dio-era Sabbath, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Whitesnake and classic Scorpions, you will not only NOT be disappointed, you will be overjoyed as I was.

This album is packed with class. The music is powerful, heavy, intelligent and beautiful. David "Rock" Feinstein is a fine guitar player with a terrific knack at writing catchy, heavy tunes where melody is the key. His style is primarily an older style of hard rock guitar playing, much more akin to Richie Blackmore than Yngwie Malmsteen. He plays for the song, not over and above it. John West, who I had the pleasure of meeting many years ago in New York city, has a rich, thick, clear voice, perfect for the songs on offer here. His range is excellent and his performance is the icing on the cake. The drumming, bass work and keyboards are stellar as well.

Out of the 11 songs on the CD, which include the instrumental "Inferno", it is such a pleasure to have a terribly hard time picking my favorites, because the album is just so strong and complete, but here goes: "Regeneration" is the album opener and it is hard and fast and catchy with John West sounding at times like Klaus Meine, which is a total compliment. "Third Wish" is epic and Sabbath-esque, a totally complete song. "Masquerade" is brilliant, so catchy, so heavy with amazing vocals, and "Poison Ivy" is heavy and bluesy, a truly great song.

The rest of the album is terrific as well with one exception, that being "Ride to Live, Live to Ride", which to me sounded like a filler tune.

Feinstein has created a great album. True metal fans have been waiting for something like this for a long time. "Third Wish" is art. It is powerful and mighty music. I hope the band sticks around for many years creating more wonderful music like this. I wish I could give it six stars.

4 out of 5 stars A solid metal offering.......2005-01-15

This disc has been in heavy rotation in my player since I got it. Classic metal sound & vocals. The vocalist has a good range and the riffs are headbanging. Any true 80s metal fan should enjoy this. The opening riff to Masquerade sounds just like one from a huge metal band...I'll let you figure it out.

5 out of 5 stars ONCE more again.......2004-11-20

Five stars to this 10 points band from Finland. They show us again the powerful of metal with this unvaliavable disc, with one of the most important songs of Nightwish, Ghost Love Score as an Instrumental Score.
Where were you last night, a cover of another great metal band, is just amazing. Tarja's voice is as clear as the wind in autumn, but lovely and strong as we never heard before.
Vids are ok, because Nightwish is not famous for it, but is cool when we can see anything of them.
As part of ONCE album, this CD is just for collectors, something special for all Nightwish fans.

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2006-12-11

Was hoping for something a little different; something fun to listen to during the holidays. The songs and the sounds are weak -- nothing stands out -- except for how bad Silent Night really is. Twisted Sister Christmas is much better.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation.......2006-11-22

These bands are kind of before my time, but I love Christmas music and after hearing snippets of the songs, I decided to buy the album. I love it! Every song is very fun and entertaining. Faster Pussycat's version of "Silent Night" is unfortunately the least appealing track on the CD, but the rest of the songs more than make up for it. If you're a Christmas music junkie like me, I highly recommend adding this CD to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars You take Faster Pussycat's Silent Night off and It'd be a 5.......2005-12-15

Like most other reviewers, I think Track 2's Naughty Naughty Xmas is the standout track. I also like Won't Be Home For Christmas by Every Mother's Nightmare. The CD was released in 2003 but there's no tellin' when each recording was actually done. To bad we don't have more of this type of music to pick from. I was and in certain moods still am a Hair Band Fanatic. I bought em all working in a Record store during Hair Band heydays. If nothing else, this CD is a change from the traditional stuff on a day when you want to let loose. WTF was Faster Pussycat thinking on Silent Night. If I arranged this cd that song would have been left on the cutting room floor in place of some other song submitted by another band.

4 out of 5 stars Rare 80s metal X'mas Complication.......2003-12-23

80s metal fans should own this alblum. Most of the tracks are quite good except the last one by Faster Pussycat ( doesn't sound like 80s metal at all ). Overall is a great X'mas alblum to own.

4 out of 5 stars Cool cd for late 80's rock fans.......2003-12-03

I thought this was a pretty cool cd for late 1980's rock fans. The Danger Danger track was my favorite. Here's the track listing since it's not listed:

2 - Danger Danger "Naughty Naughty Xmas"

    Album Description

Despite the smog-damaged ruins of it's once glorious past, Athens can be proud of it's remarkable and exemplary Metal scene and of it's leading band, Inner Wish, in particular. Formed in 1995, Inner Wish have a varied and acclaimed past behind them, touring with U.D.O., Helloween, Anathema, Therion, amongst others, as well as having their last album, 2004's Silent Faces, chart at #9 on the Japanese Import charts. Their sound is pure, 100% driving Melodic Power Metal in the classic sense. Inner Strength is yet another intelligent and exciting Inner Wish release, recorded in Germany with R.D. Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy, Valley's Eve, David Chastain, Jack Starr's Guardians Of The Flames) in The Prophecy and Music Factory Studios.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album!.......2005-09-17

Just get this! Very good album overall, my favourite song being Diotima.

If you like this you should like: Lacrimosa, Katatonia, Anathema, Stratovarius, Adagio, etc

    4 out of 5 stars potent.......2005-07-26

This cd is just as good as Fall, I will follow but it's a little more melacholic sounding. It's somewhat mid tempo gothic metal with some doom parts from time to time. I tend to like the following release a little better but this is one fine album from Lacrimas.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding..........2001-12-10

I don't think words can express the emotion conveyed on this album. While it is easy to dismiss them as an Anathema or a softer, gentler My Dying Bride imitation, I think the simple fact is that this man has probably one of the best voices in the entire genre. Quite possibly he has the best voice in music right now. The lyrics are simple yet quite meaningful given a couple listens. I think anyone that has days when they don't even want to get out of bed should listen to this. It sure as hell won't perk you up, but it'll definitly relate. And I think that's the best thing an album or a band can do.

5 out of 5 stars Melancholic and Beautiful.......2001-08-26

Burning: A Wish just makes me want to cry. The music is so powerful and enthralling. These men are true musicians and their lyrics are powerful as well. Christopher Shcmid's voice is just soul-bearing and the symphonic range of the instruments is just beautiful. When I first bought this album I must have listened to it over and over and over again 95 times in a row!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-05-25

If you have always enjoyed Lacrimas Profundere you will not be disappointed with this album...at all. If you are new to doom metal this is a fantastic place to start for you. The musicianship is wonderful as are the vocals. This is a must have for metal fans of any genre.
