5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-06-24

I went in expecting an album with an old, lackluster guitar sound and uninteresting guitar playing because, let me be honest, there's a lot of guitar playing from the 60's that doesn't sound good to me. Let me take that back- it SOUNDS good, but the notes aren't inspiring me to continue listening because it's mostly a guitar playing over simple blues rhythms and whatnot. It's alright in small doses, but not in great quantities for me.

However, Happy Trails is just the opposite. The reviewer below is right- if you like the Grateful Dead's "Live/Dead" album or even some of the spookier Doors moments when they are letting loose and jamming out, this album won't disappoint. Throw in some melodic guitar jams with lots of delicious licks and really good and unpredictable bass work, and you got yourself a quality album.

Even if you don't care for the versions of "Who Do You Love" that you may have heard, you can ignore all those versions because this is a VERY different song. It takes the theme of that song and expands and builds on the melody in various ways. An album created to satisfy all the guitar jam fans out there. It's awesome. A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars If you liked "Live Dead", You'll love this.......2007-05-15

A few have labeled this a dull or booring, I'd assume that they don't have a background in other aspects of improvizational music - jazz, ragas... If you're used to the pop format (frequently associated with comercialized drivel from my perspective) - don't buy this unless you are wanting to expand your musical horizons.

These were musicians playing music for the music, not for major $$$s.

By the way, for those who like the dual lead format, Wishbone Ash was and still is dual lead - check out Argus for starters (from around the same era - esp the cuts "The King will Come" and "Warrior"). The re-issue CD has some bonus live tracks, with an extended version of Phoenix.

Also, back around that time, Fleetwood Mac was also dual lead - check out "Then Play On", esp the cuts "Rattlesnake Shake" and the two cuts about "Madge".

Also, regarding Dino V, I heard QMS live at the Ampitheator twice in Chicago, once pre-Dino and once after - definately liked them better With John C.

Hope this helps,

Scott

5 out of 5 stars A musical experience like no other...........2007-04-22

When I'd discovered this album in the early 80s (I'm a very late baby boomer), I thought it was "different," but interesting. I wasn't sure what to think of it. Shortly thereafter, when I listened to it "experienced" (hopefully you pick up what I mean), it blew me away to the point that I thought it was one of the greatest recordings ever made. I still do (and I stopped dropping over 20 years ago). It goes beyond rock & roll (matter of fact, to dub this these tunes/performances mere rock is doing it an injustice) - it was like every note played and every beat stroked by the band was so tight and intricate - as well as the timing - it just took you on a ride I can't even describe. From the beginning twang to the last drum beat, including the incredible solos from each of the four members, as well as how each of them complemented each other, it is something beyond words. I mean time just completely stood still until the very last note was played and the needle in the groove lifted off the vinyl.

The hard part was to get enough strength to get up and turn the record over to side 2! Then that whole 2nd side just took you on a completely different journey. All I know is, whenever we dropped, Happy Trails was ALWAYS played. A night wasn't complete without jamming out to this album (Hendrix's 'Axis: Bold As Love' was another favorite).

I saw John Cipollina perform with a group called The Dinosaurs in a small rock hall in Denver, back in 1983. It was probably one of the best performances I ever saw, completely blew me away. That's what turned me onto Quicksilver, later coming across this album. By the way....some of you may recall that the front cover art (depicting the man riding away on the horse) morphed into something completely different (as the artist intended it), while dropping. I mean this whole album - inside & out - was an experience in itself.

2 out of 5 stars Severely Overrated!!!.......2007-03-20

It seems that a lot of the folks reviewing this CD still spend a lot of time with with their bongs. Yes, it's a pretty good record. But a little of the Bo Diddley beat goes a long way, and 30 plus minutes of it overstays its welcome. And for my money, Gary Duncan cuts John Cipollina to shreds; John's OVERUSE of the whammy bar takes a lot away from his playing. The cd's "Quicksilver" and "Comin' Thru" are much better than this one. I recommend this for completists only......

Classic Filmore West Rock. Just as good as as it was on vinyl years ago (too many). Has the longest recorded version of "Who Do You Love" that I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars One of the two greatest.......2003-05-10

One of the two greatest live (non-bootleg) performances of a '60s San Francisco band around -the other being "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" by the Jefferson Airplane. I first heard Happy Trails when it was first released, and only recently got the CD. Despite a couple of decades between the time I last listened to it and today, the music was a fresh and creative, and exciting as ever. It had lost nothing of its power and spacey appeal and could easily hold its own against any contemporary band if released for the first time today. Anyone who'se serious about music ought to own Happy Trails -and "Bless Its Pointed Little Head", too.

5 out of 5 stars Where did all this imagination came from?.......2003-05-02

I remember perfectly my evenings with my friends listening to this specific album. The first time I listened to it I got astonished, that sound belonged to another realm. It was in 1983 approximately, a rather crazy period of my life.

Now I find that this album, which I kept scrupulously in tape is reissued in CD format. No doubt about the purchase. The quality of remastering is excellent.

How imaginative this music is.

Who do you love? Quicksilver Messenger Service, of course.

Get it and you'll never regret.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest..........2003-04-29

One of the greatest records of the sixties and one of my favorites. The guitar playing is simply phenomenal! But it is also a psychedelic album, taking you on a "trip" that winds down at the end of "Calvary", sort of like someone walking off into the sunset, then the somewhat ironic "Happy Trails" last. What a nice trip, now bye! Also the last we would hear of the great sounds of the original quartet on the first 2 albums.
I think this Repertoire release sounds a little better than the previous Capitol release, but not much. It's still worth getting, though. Repertoire has released some really good sounding CD's recently, especially the Yardbirds albums, so you can trust that the sound will be good. The booklet has the usual information about the band's career, i.e., the first album didn't capture how they sounded live, the 2nd live one was great, the third not so great, they had a semi-hit with Fresh Air, etc. Not really a whole lot of new revealing information if you already are familiar with QMS. I would like to have found more specific information about the recording of "Happy Trails" and what the band was up to at that time. Oh well, it was a long time ago...

5 out of 5 stars great recording/great performance.......2002-12-08

i liked the recording, and this is one of qms' best performances. this release was remastered by EROC (who seems to be doing all the remastering on the repertoire label). he used to be drummer in the german progressive band grobschnitt, who's solar music live is considered one of the best live progressive recordings ever. so, it's a bit ironic that one great performer has remastered another great rock performance. the booklet in this cd is very informative. i highly recommended this cd release.

4 out of 5 stars REMASTERED OR JUST RE-EQUALIZED?.......2002-05-23

I own both the U.S. and the the "restored & remastered" Repertoire version of this classic live recording. It may boil down to a matter of personal taste, but I found the Repertoire CD to be bass-heavy, and the recording as a whole not to be any clearer than the U.S. CD. I doubt that the original master tapes were used by "EROC at the Ranch." I also doubt that 24 bit digital remastering was used, as was in Capitol's 2002 "CLASSIC MASTERS" QMS compilation. I will, however, commend Repertoire for its excellent booklet. It's a shame that neither Capitol nor Rhino has seen fit to put out a definitive remaster this timeless CD.

    Album Description

Happy Trails is a contemporary tribute to singing cowboys and Western matinee idols like Roy Rogers, Rex Allen, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy and the Lone Ranger. For over seventy years, motion pictures have emblazoned (or perhaps better said, branded) upon the American popular consciousness the image of the champion of the lone prairie who tells his story of riding tall in the saddle and of the good woman waiting for him at the end of the trail. These are their songs.

Very few reconciled the often-conflicting agendas of art and entertainment as deftly as Roy Rogers. The King of the Cowboys owned a tenor voice so amiable and mellifluous that it had the power to disarm even the most jaded among us. Perhaps that's why he was such a popular figure in the years during and after World War II: his music was an antidote to the unsettled nature of the times, recalling the simple and sincere life of the cowboy, but revolving around timeless themes that even the slickest city boy could relate to. The bulk of this three-CD collection comes from Rogers's steady stream of radio shows, and the performances are highly professional yet never stiff, musically resonant yet never self-serving, and they usually are more exuberant and spontaneous than the original studio versions. The comprehensive set brilliantly showcases the range and depth of Rogers's talents: he could croon a congenial ballad one moment, yodel passionately and fluently the next, and lead a hot-swinging big band after that. Many of the cuts feature the incredible instrumental and vocal talents of the Sons of the Pioneers or the harmonies of wife Dale Evans, while the studio numbers usually feature the top players of the day. The majority of his Western songs were written not on the prairie, the ranch, or the trail, but in Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley. Still, Rogers had an uncanny ability to make the unauthentic and calculated sound genuine and refreshing. And while this may not be authentic Western music, it is without question authentic Hollywood-style Western music, which has its own distinct rewards. The result is an immensely charming collection that celebrates Rogers's charismatic performances, but more than that, pays homage to midcentury radio and film and their valiant (yet ultimately futile) attempt to recapture America's rapidly fading innocence. --Marc Greilsamer

If you are a Roy Rogers fan, this is a must have. You will enjoy hearing all the songs that you enjoyed in his movies. His songs make you happy and it's easy to catch yourself singing along. He's the best cowboy singer. Wonderful voice! Anyone would enjoy this collection! 5 stars!

This is a great set,but where is "Think of me",a 1943 hit,on the Decca label(#6092)?

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Box Set.......2002-12-31

I have been a Roy Rogers fan for many, many years. I love his Western films, especially the ones with Dale, Gabby and the Sons of the Pioneers, but I also love his music. In my opinion, Roy is America's #1 singing cowboy. That's why I was so tickled when I found this boxed set. There are many great "movie" songs featured, some which I have heard over and over, still others that I have never heard before. I'm familiar with " Jingle, Jangle, Jingle" which has been recorded by other artists but this was my first time to hear it done so wonderfully by Roy and Dale. It is one of my favorite cuts. The same goes for "River of No Return." There are just too many great songs to mention here.

I hope Dusty, and all the people responsible for getting Roy and Dale's music on CD, will gather some more of those precious gems from Roy's countless B westerns and put them in yet another boxed set. One song in particular I would love to hear again is "Idaho", from the 1943 movie of the same title.

If you are a Roy Rogers fan, you will love this box set.

    3 out of 5 stars Overall, a good set.......1999-11-29

    Overall, a good set.

A couple of caveats: - These are radio transcriptions, with really bad acting between the songs. - Some of the key songs are not performed in full. - Some of the songs have topical verses added ('Get Along Little Dogies' with a verse that the cattle would become meat for the soldiers!) - The swing orchestra on many of the songs is rather strange; but some selections have guitar. - Interesting to hear the aggressive commercials for tie-in merchandise (nothing new under the sun!) - Booklet is printed on dark paper in tiny type.

    Still a good set.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......1999-09-05

Roy Rogers was a hero to me asa child, young adult and even now as an old adult. To be able to own a collectionof his music like this is beyond words. The music is a very good representation of his career in the movies. Thetribute to him by Dusty is something every parent would be proud of.

5 out of 5 stars Great music by Jim Hendricks.......2006-01-21

Don't know why this is listed by Amazon as
"Various Artists." It's one of several in the Jim Hendricks series of traditional western string instrumentals. I keep it in the car all the time, perfect for a long drive, after a hard day, traffic, etc. Hopefully it will be re-released before my tape wears out.
