As a British dance-pop outfit, The Beloved found commercial success with Happiness both on and off the dance floor. Validated by the hit "Hello," they were able to configure the vocal-dance scene for chart consumption. Combining electric rhythms, orchestral slams, guitar leads, and sultry singing, The Beloved secure a niche that sounds like a happier version of New Order or Depeche Mode. Softened by wandering lilts and melodic hooks, the emotional feedback seeps through, impelled by the early-'90s pop conventions that brought them onto the scene. --Lucas Hilbert

The unique collaboration between Groove Armada's Andy Cato and left-field jazz/dance singer Rachel Foster that first premiered in the summer of 2001 gets an extended airing on the Pursuit of Happiness. The album is a decidedly laid-back affair, which never breaks above the "at rest" pulse of "Into the Sun." It's clear to see why so many have compared the Foster/Catto collaboration with Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn, as most of the tracks are strongly reminiscent of Everything But the Girl. "Best Days of Our Lives" and "Angel" also follow the pleasurable "spaced" style developed on Sade's Lovers Rock. Echoes of Groove Armada's infamous "At the River" feature heavily on "Jericho" and on the windswept album closer "Higher Ground." While all the stereotypical chill-out clichés can be used to describe the album ("lazy summer afternoon music," "4am post-clubbing soundtrack"), Pursuit of Happiness is perhaps three years too late, and although pleasant enough, serves as a quaint reminder of the summer of `99. --John GalileeAlbum Description

When I first heard this, I thought Rachel Foster sounded like a cross between Enya and Annie Lenox. Her vocals are superb. The arrangements are perfection. Jericho is so sensual. Francois K (one of my favorite djs) did a remix of 21st Century that kicks...)
Everyone that I have given this cd to has loved it.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

one of my favorites.......2006-06-25
I had somehow at the time $20 so I went out and bought Happiness... After a few listens I instantly fell in love w/ Raine's somewhat whiny but inspirational voice and lyrics. Out of my 300 some albums to date, I'd say I've played this album the most because it just meant so much to me.
The opening song, "One Man Army" as before is what made me buy the cd. It has this almost demanding message of perserverance to move on and don't look back. Music video is pretty cool too.
My favorite song, the title track, is unforgettable an instant classic with some great lyrics such especially the line "Everyone you meet today is just so f'ing vain".
"Potato Girl" features a nice build up to the chorus. "Blister" follows with a meloncholy mood that is nearly perfect fit for this album.
"Is Anybody Home?" the second single, is my 2nd favorite song on the album which Raine plays some sort of kazoo which sounds awesome and almost chilling. The guitar solo towards about 2/3 in the song is great by Turner.
Not to be outdone, "Waiting" and "Thief" the middle songs slow down the pace with some beautiful ballad type music. "Waited" is a song I used as an excuse to not get things I wanted so soon, especially girls. "Thief" the third single is written for a girl who had a brain tumor where the thief was sort of death taking away her life. Very emotional for the band.
The last four songs, although not weak by any means sort of begin to wind the album down as "Lying Awake" eclipses you in a trance of revenge maybe. "Annie" possibly the most playful song on the album with a dark insane feel of craziness to which Raine explains about this girl. "Consequence of Laughing" is the closest resemblance to any song from "Clumsy" but fits in nicely and the epic finish with "Stealing Babies" with Elvin Jones.
The reason I single out this album amongst any other OLP albums, or any album in general is because I feel that each song compliments each other to make this a complete album from start to finish with no filler. Not even a second of wasted music. For those lucky to find the bonus Neil Young cover of "The Needle and the Damage Done" that is also a great song, but the band is smart enough to keep it separate knowing it doesn't necessarly belong on the album.
I would give this album 10 out of 5 stars if possible. Simply Great!
A Great Band Stumbles.......2005-12-08
All I can say is that Happiness ... to me is a wannabe art rock mess with Raine Maida and company complicating good potential rock songs with unnecessary over-dubs, sound effects and a vocal Olympic exercise that distracts from the band's usual solid songwriting.
Whereas other great OLP records such as Naveed and Spiritual Machines in my opinion recognized that a rock song could be stretched only so far, on Happiness the band confuses excess with quality. The first song One Man Army sets off the bad trend as Raine whispers over a neon light pulsating sound to race off into a song highlighted by Maida's usually interesting falsetto work going from impressive to annoying, making the track feel very disjointed.
Another example of the excess is the wasted potential of Thief, a simple song that when showcased in a one guitar acoustic performance on the band's DVD reveals some of Maida's most heartfelt lyrics. On Happiness Thief is drowned by electric guitars and pulsating drums that prevents the song from reaching its potential heart tugger status. In a recent concert I attended in 2005 the band played Thief again without Taggert's drumming and the song reached the intimacy that is lacking here.
I can appreciate a band attempting to add new dimensions to their sound but at a certain point a band needs to be rained in. After all on Happiness And The Fish did anyone need to hear the lyric "talking is just masturbating without the mess?"
I would argue no.
I_LOVE_THIS_ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-07
Great buy..........2005-09-14
Their Best........2005-07-21
This album is all very negative, depressing and horrifying. Lyrically its a masterpiece. Some of the lyrics are very disturbing. Take the haunting, gorgeous ballad, "Theif": "I don't want to understand this horror/There's a weight in your eyes I can't admit/Everybody ends up here in bottles/But the name tag's the last thing you wanted/As the world explodes we fall out of it/And we can't let go because this/Will not go away" or the title track: "I confess/Everyone is overweight/And I'm obsessed/Talking is just masturbating/Without the mess". Thats some crazy stuff.
Every track on the cd is top-notch. "One Man Army", the albums first single, is a rocking song with an anthematic chorus. The title track is as haunting as it is disturbing, with amazing vocal performances. "Potato Girl" and "Blister" are depressing, wailing ballads. "Is Anybody Home?" is one of the best tracks on the album, and also one of the more uplifiting ones. "Waited" is an amazing song about being fooled and let down. "Lying Awake" and "Consequence of Laughing" are probably the two hardest songs on the album along with the first two tracks. However, these two don't appeal to me quite as much. "Annie" is about, I think, a schizofrenic girl who dreams that everyone is dead. With such a cute melody, the dark lyrics are very ironic. It's one of my favorite tracks.
The real peak of the album, however, is the last track, "Stealing Babies." The first half of this song is amazing, alternating between a typical sounding our lady peace rocker and a creepy part with just piano and vocals. The second half of the song has ELVIN JONES on drums (WOAH!!) and the song breaks down into this carribean style thing and then builds back up for an amazing climax. The song then dives into freeform territory for a minute or so and it brings the album to a close.
Listening to this album is like going on a journey. A journey deep into your deepest fears, depressions, and nightmares. Its a twisted and disturbing, yet catchy and beautiful ride. It's not for everyone, but Its honestly one of my favorite cds I own. I've owned it since it came out and I love it just as much now as I did then. Thats a lot of staying power.

The Glass Slipper Fits!.......2001-04-21
When Susan Egan plans her strategy in "Promise Him Anything" and Pamela Winslow expresses her fear in "On the Steps of the Palace," the listener becomes aware of Cinderella's human side. Likewise, when Christa Moore shares her fantasy world "In My Own Corner" and Christina Noll expresses her thrill of her dream coming true in "Impossible/Suddenly It Happens," the listener is reminded of the powerful message of Cinderella's theme: dreams DO come true.
Fortunately, the compilation does not exclude humor as well. "The Stepsister's Lament" by Farah Alvin and Alet Oury is hilariously poignant; the lyrics "Why would a fellow want a girl like her? A frail and frocky beauty!" could be the alltime wallflowers' lament. And Jonathan Freeman's "What Has Love Got to Do with Getting Married?" is a droll piece of practical cynicism to his Prince son. (The song reminds me of the film Moonstruck. When Olympia DuKakis asks her daughter Cher, "Do you love him?" When Cher answered affirmatively, her mother muttered, "That's bad.")
Also, the musical bridges add to the suspense of the Cinderella story. "Midnight", "The Ball," and "If The Shoe Fits" from Prokofiev's ballet are beautifully orchestrated and remind the listener that the Cinderella myth is adaptable for many forms of entertainment.
I was a little disappointed that "So This is Love" and "The Work Song" was not included, but I guess I'm partial to the Disney version. The 1950 cartoon was my first introduction to Cinderella, and to my delight, my nephew enjoyed it as well thirty years later.
Nevertheless, this CD shows the timeless appeal of the Cinderella myth. Its beauty, humor and suspense is contained here in this magnificent collection.
Magical collection fit for a princess!.......1999-04-13
The score from Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is so charming and catchy it's fun to hear it again by new artists. The performers, all apparently Broadway singers (?), are all beautifully performed with exuberance and style. The orchestration is lush and appropriate to the material.

Late 80's power pop excellence.......2007-02-08
This album starts off with Hard to Laugh, a fun rocker despite being about some guy complaining about his girlfriend. And that is actually fairly typical for the album. But the bands buoyant delivery and the tidy production job makes it possible for quirky, depressing or strangely touching topics to be fun to listen to. And that is a real accomplishment by the bands main man, Moe Berg, who is the sole songwriter on this release.
Looking back on this album before putting my fingers to the keyboard it's interesting how well this album has weathered the passing years. Sure, if it's metal your after, go elsewhere, but if your in the right mood this album can still provide a fun listen. It may not cure world poverty but even after all the music that has passed through my ears personal teenage anthems like I'm An Adult Now and Looking for Girls still put a smile on my dial.
Fans of Cheap Trick (their funny bits) should give this mob a look - and also any fans of AOR who might be after something a little more whimsical and less tear jerking should also give this disc a listen. It's a very good starting point to explore this band as some of their later albums such as Wheres the Bone are a little more understated and more focussed on Moe Berts vocals to the detriment of the band feeling present on this album.
Highly recommended rock 'n' roll.

Good to hear them again.......2006-03-11
Minor late 80's classic by another great Canadain export; aggressive guitar hooks, quirky lyrics sung with abandon by Moe Berg and beautiful accompaniment by Kris Abbott & Leslie Stanwyck, all done to a boppin beat. Power pop at its finest.
How to spot a classic in the I-Pod age.......2005-05-22
TPOH.......2005-02-19
I had heard "Adult" many times over, but it was when I read Todd Rundgren produced the entire disc that I actually purchased it. His "touch" is on the disc and that is a good thing!
Moe Berg is my kind of tunesmith. I really like "Hard to Laugh", the kick off track. I was hooked! Other cuts that caught my ear are "She's So Young", "Looking For Girls", and "Man's Best Friend". Clever lyrics like the chorus for MBF:
-Cause I'm not the kind you want for your boyfriend,
but I'll be your man's best friend.-
I love it!
I know that this has been a hard disc for me to find, so grab when you can. "Love Junk" is not junk.

Long Time Listener.......2006-04-12
Song by song:
1. Michael Dodge ****
-very listenable, catchy tune, kinda sad and remorseful. Reminds me of old western B movies?
2. Hard Luck Woman *****
-one of my favorite country songs, not that I have many. Having worked in trucking, this really hits home - one of the best trucker songs ever recorded!
"I pulled my Diamond Rio into a truck-stop down the road,
I asked for toast and coffee, and the waitress told me no.
She said she heard about me and all the wrong I'd done,
About how I left my woman for the truckin' I'd begun.
Here today, eh. Gone tomorrow.
It's a hard luck woman taken to the truck lovin' man."
Classic!
3. Children *1/2
-listen to it once then delete it. It's too droopy and sad for me. Too much preaching. There are some parts that might be interesting for songsmiths.
4. Hokey Joe Pony ***1/2
-Jug band style. Cool, listenable song. Cocaine reference in there somewhere is kinda different for them.
5. Flying Arrow *****
-awesome song. Sad, sad, sad! In the vein of their other 'social commentary' and 'protest' tunes. It's a lament about the dying Indian Nation(s). A must listen, but don't play at dances.
6. Old Joe Clark ****
-the best rendition of this song I've ever heard, but I haven't heard many. I don't know the history of the song, but I've always assumed these were original MP lyrics. Maybe there's just a zillion obscure verses out there.
"Old Joe Clark walked downtown backwards, people asked him why,
He said 'I could go for one more drink while wavin' you goodbye."
Fun.
7. Good Friend of Mary's ***1/2
-their first 'worship' song? Very listenable. The story told by an aquaintance of Mary, I think.
8. He Loves Them **1/2
-very tough song to listen to. I suppose it has a place in the world, but that place is not my player. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad song, technically; in fact it's quite complex. The subject matter is the extreme opposite of what the Talbots are known for today, very juxtapositional in that regard.
9. Melinda ***
-possibly the strangest tune they've ever done. Haunting. Something I'd consider playing at a halloween party or before telling ghost stories to the nephews.
10. Let Me Know Where You're Going *****
-poppish tune with *cough* cool banjo riffs. A fine example of why they didn't make it big - great tune, unpopular performance -I like it.
11. Everybody Was Wrong ***1/2
-another darkish, sadish, haunting tune, I think about some Civil War dude, maybe about pollution - it's a hard song to follow. Not a great song but listenable. A nice guitar solo near the end which is rare for them.
Buy it!

A lot of fun!.......2007-04-25
First, the cast. An interesting combination. Anna Moffo is a delightful Rosalinda; her lush voice works well here. Jeanette Scovotti as Adele may be less well known, but her work is fine indeed (way back when, I owned the Reader's Digest "Operetta" collection, in which these two reversed roles). Rise Stevens, an estimable mezzo, sings Orlofsky with a nice touch. Sergio Franchi plays Alfredo. Eisenstein is well sung by Richard Lewis. George London, a mainstay at the Met, took on Falke. Finally, John Hauxvell sang Frank. And they all seem to be having a grand old time in the singing. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus are well led by Oscar Danon.
Second, the singing. The English translation is hardly great art. But the infectious presentation by the singers renders this close to irrelevant. "Calamity, Catastrophe" has everyone in a dither, with a quick tempo that catches the listener up in the excitement. Rise Stevens does a wonderful turn in "More often than not. . .Chacun a son gout." Well sung indeed. Adele's "Oh for the life of an actress" is an affecting piece, with Jeanette Scovotti doing a nice job singing.
So, if you want an infectious, fun version of "Die Fledermaus" (even with a rather lame English translation), this will work well for you.

Great Moments from Die Fledermaus.......2006-02-10
Sparkling vintage Johann Strauss.......2004-02-20
The English translation is acceptable but nothing dazzling, and some of the words and phrases seem awkward. (Purists will argue FLEDERMAUS is best heard in it's original German. For that, go to Decca's wonderful 1960 set which includes the wonderful gala sequence featuring an all-star cast.)
Anna Moffo is a fine Rosalinda and Jeanette Scovotti is perfect for Adele. (The two ladies switched roles that same year to record highlights for Readers Digest TREASURY OF GREAT OPERETTAS.) Rise Stevens is a bit of a plum as Prince Orlofsky, somehwat past her prime and oversinging "A Most Successful Host." Sergio Franchi does better with Alfred and Richard Lewis does fine as Eisenstein.
The Ball scene is given the larger piece of the recording, probably because this is where the opera's most famous "hit tunes" originate.
FLEDERMAUS is very much a piece of another world...a long forgotten time when Vienna was all glitter and balls and waltzes. They had the right attitude then: In the rest of the world the situation was often serious, but not hopeless. The Vienese viewed the situation as being hopeless - but never serious.
THAT is the spirit of this fun recording.
