Fuse [ENHANCED CD]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Joe Henry has the instincts of a good storyteller--he can capture a lifetime of small victories and even smaller defeats in a few seemingly offhand phrases--paired with a sensualist's delight in sonic pleasure. Recorded with help from producers Daniel Lanois and T Bone Burnett, Fuse is an atmospheric marvel, full of heavy-lidded grooves, lonesome trumpets, and desiccated lust. "Want Too Much" captures that moment when desire curdles into despair, and "Beautiful Hat" offers the stately elegance of a Crescent City funeral march. But the album's greatest marvel is "Great Lake," which begins, "Terri comes in laughing, shakes her coat off, and I just can't bear to look." The song only gets better from there, thanks to a liquid bass line and Henry's ability to squeeze four conflicting emotions from the repeated use of one key word. If Raymond Carver had written songs instead of stories and enjoyed life as much as he suffered, he might have sounded like this. --Keith Moerer

Spin
The songs still have gorgeous bone structure, but by sacrificing their meticulousness, Henry achieves a more enigmatic beauty.

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-24

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Probably the best album from sadly defunct hard-rockers Kix. Never overwhelmingly popular, their only major hit (the anti-suicide ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes") is on this album. It's a radical departure from most of their material, which consisted mainly of good-time, party-on pop metal infused with genuine smarts and affection for the music. Hailing from Maryland, they incorporated the L.A. glam style into their music while maintaining a grittier edge that owed a good deal to AC/DC. This mix serves them very well on songs like "Get It While It's Hot," "Cold Blood," "Boomerang," "Dirty Boys," and the title track. With considerably more substance than most 1980s pop metal, this album holds up much better than its contemporaries. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Underrated band, Good songs but bad production .......2006-08-01

Blow My Fuse is a good album but not great. Listening to it recently I think it really could have been a great one. Kix had a lot of talent with great songs and great guitar work. Lead singer Steve Whiteman sounds like a cross in-between Axl Rose and Brian Johnson which fits the band very well. Kix was one of the more underrated bands of the hair metal scene of the 80's early 90's. If they had better management and production this could have been superstars. I remember seeing the band live around 1991 or 1992 and the album doesn't capture the band at all.

The album does have some great hooks on it. Epically on the tracks "Blow My Fuse", "Cold Blood" & Get It While It's Hot". The bad areas are Jimmy Chalfant's weak drumming (similar to Fred Coury of Cinderella) and the horrible production. I don't think he was a bad drummer personally, I just think it goes back to the production of the album.

I wish they would have re-recorded this album to make it more up to date like Bulletboys did with the Burning Cats...CD. The production of this album is very 80's and sounds very dated. There's too much unnecessary echo on Steve Whiteman's vocals on every song. If the vocals would have been left alone it would have sounded raw, like Axl on Appetite.

I also think there's too much synthesizer on the album. There biggest hit was "Don't Close Your Eyes" which is a great song but I always find myself skipping into the "meat" of the song due to the lame synthesizer intro.

I never quite understood then album cover either. I know it's an electrical transformer but it's kind of cartoonist and looks stupid. It's bad enough the band had the same name as a kids cereal but the horrible album cover I think had a lot to do with there downfall.

For all the problems you still should still pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED.......2006-07-28

Let me just say this: If you put Steve Whiteman up against any other vocalist from the '80's metal genre you'd be able to seperate the men from the boys!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Guitar-driven sleaze rock.......2006-06-29

In listening to the history of Kix, from the Shooz to the Generators, this album is a bit of a musical departure for the band. Missing are the tongue-in-cheek euphemisms and naughty wordplay that is Kix's mantra. The band really cuts their teeth on edgy, gritty songs such as "Get it While it's Hot" and "Don't Close Your Eyes" (a HAVE TO HAVE ballad). You can't go wrong with this disc!

4 out of 5 stars Wow........2006-03-01

Okay, this really is not my favorite musical genre, but I must admit that this album did bring me some very genuine auditory pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars This band ROCKS and so does this cd!.......2006-02-26

While stationed in Japan a friend gave me a copied cassette version of this album/cd. Althought the release date is 1989, I had it in 1987?? Not sure how, he said he had a friend in the band. From the first time I listened to it I was hooked. After returning to the states in NC, I had the chance to see them live at The Attic in Greenville in 1988. What a show!! This album still ranks as a must have kick @ss disc for those of us that grew up in the era of hair metal and R&R. BUY IT!

"You gotta see 'em live" is the last defense of nearly every band who can't make a decent studio album. Widespread Panic, however, is one band whose studio efforts--such as Space Wrangler and Ain't Life Grand--have been quite good but still pale in comparison to this two-CD concert souvenir. That's hardly a surprise, given that the group thrives more on touring than album sales, but it's still a treat to hear songs like "Porch Song," "Disco," and "Rock" energetically leap from the speakers. Extended jams like "Diner" "Greta," "Barstools and Dreamers," and "Conrad" achieve new heights, while Panic, renowned for their treatment of occasional cover tunes, don't disappoint here, with worthy takes on J.J. Cale's "Travelin' Light" and the Talking Heads' "Papa Legba." Light Fuse Get Away is funky and expansive, leaving an aftertaste somewhat similar to that of a terrific (albeit much shorter) live album from a generation earlier, Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Kirk.......2006-05-11

New Widespread Panic fan here. I've been listening to this daily for the last 3 weeks and think it's incredible. I listened to 1 WP cd probably 10 years ago and didn't really care for their sound at the time but gave them another try last year and very glad I did. This is my favorite release so far. Favorites (tough thing to do) : Gimme, Pigeons, Love Tractor. Of course Porch Song, Space Wrangler are great but I was already hooked on those before I got this CD. I think this is great sampling of their sound and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Can't get enough.......2006-02-19

I purchased this CD about 6 months ago and in that time i have probably listened to it over 150 times. I had been lightly exposed to panic during my high school days, but when I attened college I made a good friend who was a huge fan of panic. he introduced me to them in detail and since them I have fallen in love with them and especially the late great guitarist Michael Houser. HOuser had a very unique style that had a ligerning effect due to the delay which he always used in his rig.I have read reviews here that say that john herman's keybaords are sub-par in my opinion this is far from the truth. Herman I beleive has a wonderful style using organs and keyboards much in the way of former GRateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland. The highlights of these disks in my opinion are Space Wrangler, Impossible and Greta. The jam at the end of Space Wrangler is the best example of Houser's ability to blow your mind with his unique style and just make you want to boogie. the intro to impossible is head shaking hard rocking music that just sets up for another great tune. In my opnion if you are interested in this cd buy it before another panic cd to have some feel for the majesty of thier live shows.

5 out of 5 stars Who's this "Phish" I hear so much about...........2005-12-27

When I hear the word jam band, the two groups which first come to mind are Phish and the Grateful Dead. While the Dead exist in a league of their own, I own Phish Live Albums and this Panic album, and I quite easily pick the latter over the former. This Panic cd simply has the soul and energy that I find Phish lacks, and the music is accessible while being unique and engrossing. Wanna dive into the jam band scene? Start with this Panic cd. You won't be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Local Normalcy.......2005-09-22

Widespread does it again!! They release another live album that is so crunchy, you forget it is the same as the many other live cd's they have that play the same songs, just like Dave!!! Even though I have every 'spread concert, excuse me, show they've played in the past four years in my twiggy new I-pod, I would totally pay 25 bucks to get the same songs, but on another cd. These Georgia boys do it again, but not really again because its the same as everything else, but again in a way worth spending 25 bucks. Keep on Truckin' 'spread, like Trey or the Dead, don't worry about being too monotonous, you're too crunchy for that.

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST-HAVE" for any fan.......2005-05-02

Excellent representation of their live shows. It rocks! A definite must-have for any panic fan. Buy this one before any of the the others (if it's your first purchase), it has great songs from many of their albums.

Their 8th album, The Fuse just may be the best-sounding Pennywise album yet. The legendary Hermosa Beach foursome have created an amazing, incendiary album from it first snare drum crack to its last molten guitar line.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A lot of the same, but nonetheless a worthwhile grab........2006-07-30

Take some catchy riffs, slightly immature and simplistic lyrics, fast-paced drumming, and non-audible bass. What do you get? Pennywise, of course. Well, mostly all of today's punk, but Pennywise are too talented to be placed in that category. Pennywise are a band that never cease to amaze their fans by not leaving their roots, but yet i have to wonder how they've kept them satisfied for so long. "The Fuse," however, is their best effort yet. Regardless, I personally find this album to be very infectious for a short period of time. Some days, all I could do was keep scrolling to the 'Pennywise' section of my limewire. But, alas, I must now break up the CD into sections as I listen. You may be wondering to yourself, ( more than likely not, though ) why I seem to be taking shots at the album during my review. The only reason for this is that I know this album could have been five times better than it is. You also may be skeptical to listen to another 'whiny punk band', but that's okay, I've been there, too. Basically all punk bands, except a few like Bad Religion, have no theory in their music, ever. You know drill, favorites below: ( I'd like to put a ton more on the list, it's just some tracks seem to be lacking something, though I'm not certain what it is ).

3. Competition Song - Although we have heard this message before, it wouldn't hurt America to hear it again. The back-up vocalist gives a great performance on the chorus here.
7. The Kids - The song that made me want to listen to this CD. It packs punch, and it is a personal favorite.
8. Fox TV - The closest thing to a drum solo you will find in punk, I liked it. The stop and start idea is pretty neat, too.
14. 18 Soldiers - The lead vocalist may be very difficult to understand in this song, I feel this chorus is a bit familiar. Anyhow, this song is a great example of how Pennywise can get the job done.

All in all, this CD might be monotonous at points, but you really should check it out, because you always do need those good tunes stuck in your head, instead of the pure ludicrous that is invading our local radio stations today. Thank you for your time.

5 out of 5 stars i am a million miles away but it feels like im coming home.......2006-07-22

Yes pennywise rock, their insane live performance (saw them on the 19th and will never forget that concert), meaningful lyrics, hard and fast sound has established them as a force in punk rock that wont ever go away. To be honest the first time i heard this cd i wasnt that impressed but with every listen it becomes better and better. Just one look at the cover of this cd should tell you all you need to know about the music your gonna hear when you pop this in your cd player. If you can get the one with the extra song: Million Miles. The best songs on this cd for me are: Yell out, closer, The kids, Fox TV, Stand Up, Disconnect, Million Miles and knocked down but every song is great. So all in all just buy this cd its awesome!

5 out of 5 stars pennywise continues their path of greatness.......2006-06-10

pennywise had always struck an odd chord in me because they never were truly amazing(about time is a diamond in the rough!) until they released "land of the free?" this album builds greatly on from the ashes musically, but lyrically i can trace it all the way back to about time, unknown road, and self-titled.

every song is able to be listened to without a skip button! this is even better than from the ashes..i dont know about land of the free? or about time, but its close!

it is great to hear and know that there is still a great so-cal surf/skate punk band pumping out fresh material. with offspring's mtv fame, rancid's punker than thou stance, nofx being transformed into a typical warped tour band, bad religion gaining an indie stance moreso than a punk stance, and epitaph's large endorsements of nu-emo, pennywise is a shining star and they basically do, like their one album states, rise "from the ashes."

keep it up pennywise!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Hate Me Yet..........2006-04-07

Okay...First of all, Pennywise is amazing. They are one of few bands that I can say that about nowadays. Always fast, always true, and always pissed off at the world, they never stray from their roots or sound. (Honorable mentions: Bad Religion, Rise Against) I would love to give this album 5 stars. WOULD LOVE TO! God knows I've given the rest five stars, but after a while, it starts to dawn on you that Jim doesn't know how to write lyrics. They have some original songs now and then, I'll give them that. "Dying to Know", "Nothing", "Perfect People"...Okay, basically up until "Land of the Free?" were original and thoughtful lyrics, but then you realize that once you know the lyrics to one, you know them to all. He rhymes die, try, I, cry, time, you, and do a million times. And he says "tragic comedy" about another million times. I don't think it's bad, and really there's nothing else to rhyme about, but it kinda gets to the point where you laugh. Another thing I found funny was on "Land of the Free?". In the song "There's Something Wrong With Me" he states: "Never gonna be, who you wanna be, you are not like me!". Then in the very next song "Enemy" (another word he rhymes all day), he says: "You're just like me, I'm not the enemy." Okay...Am I like you or not? Or they? Or whoever? I dunno. But they always have fast, heavy rifts and great songs. Still an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars thank God for pennywise.......2006-01-09

I love this band. A true punk rock band to the bone, their formula has proven more than successful over the years, they have stuck to their roots and haven't changed for anyone or anything. It's bands like pennywise that give us hope and make us realize that worrying about bands like simple plan and good charlotte flushing punk rock down the jon is not worth it. Those bands will come and go, but bands like pennywise, bad religion, strung out etc will never die. Long live Pennywise!

The album reminds me alot of Land Of The Free...all the songs are brilliant, to me Stand Up and Best I can are probably the coolest. The thing I love most about this album is that the lyrics are generally all about hope, not giving up, and a fight worth fighting for. Thank you Pennywise for keeping it real!

Remenicent of the college rock days with groups like better than ezra, the gin blossoms, and the nixons, Stereo fuse has a great sound that takes me back to those days, but with a updated kick. This album does include a version of Everything, their hit from their first self titled album in 2002, and also contains many other great tracks. A great sound, easy to preview the songs here on amazon, which hooked me to buy it. So check it out, great lyrics, great melodies.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than You Think.......2004-10-21

I've been listening to this CD since I first purchased it on "Eight Track" tape. I just wanted to mention Two songs that get burried by the well deserved commercial success of Sometimes When we Touch. They are Longer Fuse and Fourteen Today. Two fantastic songs, if you haven't given them the time to deeply touch you, and they will, Please do. They are a part of what this CD is about. You'll be glad you did. And by the way, I still have a "Like New" Vinyl Recording of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars All Time Lover's Classic...........2004-08-12

Even though this album was originally released way, way back in the mid/late seventies, it still holds a warm place in my heart for 'romantic ballads'. The huge hit single, "Sometimes When We Touch" is one of the most heart wrenching, romantic songs of that era. The way that Mr. Hill sings it with such passion and raw emotion still brings goose-bumps to me every time I hear it. His simple, yet meaningful lyrics tell of the pain and anguish that he tries to convey so well that you cannot help but be touched by the tune.
The rest of this album also marks well with regards to his songwriting ability. Simple, yet meaningful songs, each telling their own special story.
I would recomend this LP to anyone who is, or ever has been, in love. You cannot go wrong here.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't be Able to Stay Seated.......2006-11-09

Each edition of the "Blowing the Fuse" series from Bear Family Records is amazing. These classic R&B songs have never sounded better - I wholeheartedly agree with David Greene (he reviews the 1956 edition). The remastering job is just exceptional. The songs pour out of the speakers and start the whole joint jumping. The horn sections, drums, and - most notably - the vocals have never been captured like they are on these discs. I have collected these records and artists for over 40 years and these are simply the best-sounding versions I own - even better than reissues from the original labels themselves. Younger listeners might think these are vintage recordings, good only for historical purposes. Think again, whippersnappers, these R&B hits (and a few rare cuts) are as vital today as rap and hip-hop. Check them out, you'll be "blowing a fuse" in no time.

Album Description

Fuse offers a fascinating glimpse into the musical beginnings of Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson before superstardom beckoned as members of Cheap Trick, but it also stands on its own as a prime example of keyboard driven psychedelic pop, circa 1969. Rewind proudly announces the re-release of the complete 8 song Epic album by FUSE with 2 bonus tracks (Hound Dog & Cruisin' For Burgers) issued under their original name, the Grim Reapers. 2001 reissue.

5 out of 5 stars Long search ended!.......2007-05-14

Being from Rockford, and having worked as a carpenter remodeling Rick Nielsens house, it is a relief to have FINALLY found this on CD!!! I have loved the unique sound these boys put out since I first heard a friends dads vinyl L.P. copy of this album about 30 years ago, and have not heard it in for the last 18 years. Great tunes, my favorites being 4/4 3/4, Show Me and To Your Health. Rick Nielsen mainly plays Keyboards on this, but he does display some early signs of songwriting ability as in Show Me and To Your Health. The singer was only 17 years old when this was released, what a strong voice for a kid!!! Tom Peterson has to be one of the most UNDERrated Bass players in popular rock. Just listen to his tight, chunky-bass on this album, and he was only 19 years old! Each track is different, nothing seems repetitive. That is to say, the guitarist, keyboards everyone sounds different on each track. I can skip the Bonus track of Hound Dog, though, only because I have NEVER liked that way-to-often-covered song in the first place.Do not expect to hear any "Cheap Trick sounding" material on this album. It is Hard-rock, a bit progressive, hard hitting music. This is a very good album, played by a bunch of Rockford kids, and is highly recomended by me.

5 out of 5 stars This is a closet classic.......2006-09-29

I feel compelled to write this review because this is a diamond in the rough. This is outstanding hard rock. If you like Grand Funk, Purple, Zep, etc. BUY this cd. It is NOT amateur night; these guys pound out some great guitar playing and the bass is that fun "rollicking" style of playing. Very active bass. Everyone does a fine job; the singer has an outstanding voice. I cannot emphasize enough - if you love 70's hard rock then buy this!!! I guarantee you will rock out!

2 out of 5 stars Rick and Tom of Cheap Trick cut their teeth here, and you can always do worse than this 1969 release.......2005-12-24

Fuse was the 1969 release of Tom Peterson and
Rick Nielsen who later made up 2/5's of Cheap
Trick (Jon Brant, another Bassist later factored
in when Cheap Trick REALLY took off in the '80's).

This is worth having if you can convert it to
disk or cassette. "Crusin' for Burgers" is my
favorite here. Check it out. You can always do
worse for 'Trick - Does "Woke Up with a Monster"
ring a bell? How about the awful (*) "Tom Peterson
and Another Language"?! Sorry, you're about to eat...

4 out of 5 stars The legacy begins here..........2005-04-06

With two future (and the founding) members of Cheap Trick in its rankings, this album couldn't be that bad. After purchasing a copy, it seems it's actually quite good. Fantastic even! It has a heavy rock sound very similar to that of Vanilla Fudge (their debut at least). If you're at least a casual to semi-serious fan of Cheap Trick and/or Vanilla Fudge, then you're in for a real trip.
