5 out of 5 stars One of the original crossover rockabilly/country albums.......2007-04-23

I remember looking through the bins in my favorite record store in Tucson AZ in the early 70's when this one caught my eye - Cool band name, great title and comic cover art - it had it all! I bought it without knowing anything about the band based solely on the cover. I'm so glad I did!! I've had the album (recently updated to a CD) for 35 years and still tap my toes to it and sing along. My favs: Back to Tennesee, Wine Do Yer Stuff, Seeds and Stems. Sure do miss "Hot Licks, Cold Steel & Other Truckers' Favorites" - Please bring that back!!

5 out of 5 stars Ozona Florida.......2007-04-22

I had to go to a wedding rehearsal one Friday night in 10BC but opted to go see CC&TLPA opeining for BYRDS at the Armory. (With my sneaky little girlfriend in a Monkeyfur coat)
After the set, I saw Billy C hiking toward the concession stand.
"Nice set man!" I said
"Uh Huh" was all he said back.
Lost in the Ozone was a sleeper then, known to many Florida musicians but not the run-of-the-mill Country crowd.
My, how time has grown and flown. These guys are an INSTITUTION like The Outlaws, Asleep at the Wheel, Greazy Wheels or Moby Grape....And "Ozone" put them out there in fine fashion with a good mix of old and new material. Eventually older folks were humming along to Family Bible as if it was always done that way.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of richness in this atmosphere.......2006-12-01

A hippie era relative introduced Commander Cody to me some years ago, and I've been hooked ever since. The truck stop music is unmistakably American and quite catchy (unless you find all things American to be gauche), the songs occaionally in turns counter-cultural (e.g., about dope smoking) or traditional (e.g., about the family Bible). Though I have most of the Commander's discs, this one is my favorite.

I'd love to see the Commander live, not only to hear them play but to soak in the ambience of the venue and crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Lost in the Ozone, but found on Amazon.......2006-11-05

"Lost in the Ozone" by Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airman is one of the classic underground records of the late 60's and early 70's that while not enjoying "Top 10" status, has remained a sense of notoriety. The irreverence of Commander Cody hides true musicianship as is heard on this album. "Hot Rod Lincoln" is probably the most famous track, but one of my favorites is also "Stems and Seeds Again." The situation of the sinder of this song is that all of the most terrible things in the world have fallen down onto him: he's lost his job, lost his girlfriend, his house has been repossessed and his dog has died. But to add insult to injury, he's "Down to seeds and stems again, too." What more can I say? I loved this album 35 years ago and it still is as fresh today as it was then.

5 out of 5 stars Commander's First Album..........2005-12-08

It's great, and some say they never topped it. I've never found an album put out by these guys that I didn't like. This album was a statement of things to come...a great album, but when you get right down to it, they where a live band, a bar band, and best heard in that form. But this album is great, buy it. Beware of MCA bastardizatoin. The cover art & liner notes are GONE on the CD issue. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gig.......2007-04-04

The Commander and his Airmen were my favourite rockin' country band of the 70's and this album shows them at their very best. Since there is no definitive Commander "Best Of" album out there, (the "Too Much Fun" album is probably the best but still less than satisfactory), Cody fans should just go out and get all their early albums (i.e. those albums released prior to 1976). Start with "Lost in the Ozone", "Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker's Favourites", this Armadillo live album (and its companion piece "Sleazy Roadhouse Stories" - the rest of the Armadillo concert) and then go from there. The Airmen were not just a bunch of stoned, drunk musos but instrumentalists (and songwriters) of the highest quality. Many are still making a living from music over 30 years later. They may seem rough and ready on the albums but that was the effect they sought. Listen closely and you will hear superb musicianship, arranging, singing and songwriting (including inspired selection of covers).

CCAHLPA burned hot and bright for a short time and this live album is the pinnacle of their recorded work.

5 out of 5 stars Commander Cody at His Best.......2006-06-25

These are all of the Commader Cody songs that have made him a legend. Highly recomended for any one into Rock-a-billy or Texas Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Should have been a double live..........2005-12-08

...And it almost was a double live...the commander wanted it that way, record company said no...what do record companies know? Not much, sadly, becuase there WAS a WHOLE LOT more music from this concert at the world-famous Armadillo World Headquarters...the rest of this concert can be found on one of three albums...Sleazy Roadside Stories, Bar Room Classics, or Texas Roadhouse Favorites...the third mentioned is hard to find, apperantly a UK only release. Sleazy Roadside Stories has two tracks missing from the other two, but any of those are good if you want the rest of the concert. This is a great album, it has, arguably, the BEST version of "Riot In Cell Block #9" ever recorded...was that July 27 1973 or 1963? Hmmmm Anyway, crank this one up, crack open a lone star, and drift away to 525 and 1/2 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX...in 1973, was there a better place to see the greatest progressive country band in history?

4 out of 5 stars Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19

There were a lot of groups that I enjoyed in my wilder 20's and 30's. Asleep at the Wheel was my favorite until I discovered Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. These guys could really rock and roll. Their early albums showed them finding their style and they kept getting better. Unfortunately, when they had really hit their stride, the real talent of the group went elsewhere and we were left with the Commander and a new group. He may have put the group together and his name at the front but Commander Cody was not the heart and soul of this group.

"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.

I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.

5 out of 5 stars Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06

Following a third album that didn't shine as inventively as their first two, the Airmen returned with an absolutely brilliant document of all that their music meant. Recorded live at Austin, Texas' "World Armadillo Headquarters," the Airmen sound like the Buckaroos in their prime: relaxed, confident, and deadly across a wide variety of inter-related musical genres. They even cover Owens' "Crying Time," much to the crowd's delight.

The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."

The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."

This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

5 out of 5 stars The Ol' Commander at his prime.......2007-01-05

I recently saw The Commander Cody Band in an intimate bar setting in Sausalito, CA and it brought back a flood of happy memories of the music he's produced over his long career (which really got off the ground right across the bay in Berkeley in the late 60's). Like most, I used to have this album on vinyl, but came back from the show and ordered a couple of his classics "Tales From the Ozone" and "Lost Planet Airmen" to add to a couple of others of his I already had on CD. In this day of prepackaged groups and formula sounds, the music is altogether refreshing. It's also nostalgic, bringing back memories of a special time in my life. When Airmen was recorded in 1974, George Frayne, a.k.a. Commander Cody, had put together an accomplished group of musicians and his new label, WB, brought a new dimension to their dynamics with state of the art engineering. Each song has a life of its own, but they all seem to blend together perfectly; from the Carribean influenced "Southbound" to the truck drivin' "California Okie" and rockin' boogie of "Don't Let Go" and "Boogie Man Boogie", even the subtle country ballad "Devil and Me" (written by the band) and the classic, "Willin". Besides this exceptional music, I was much relieved that the original 30's era Flash Gordon-esque comic book illustration was still on the cover (I didn't even recognize the one on the Amazon preview).

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting lost music of my youth..........2006-11-09

Back in the early-to-mid '70s we were listening to all that hippies-movin-to-the-hills music. Commander Cody, the New Riders and many others--including real bluegrass music. My friends (hello greybarrel!) loved CC&HLPA, but I wasn't all that thrilled for the most part. I think it was the steel guitar. Just a little bit toooo country for my tastes at the time. Recently I ran across my old vinyl copy of Country Casanova and gave it a new listen. Whoa--what a difference a few decades makes! As others have said, it is swingin', rockin' and fun. I loved it, and started looking for Commander Cody cds to buy. I can't rank the entire discography, but I can tell you that this one is great. I don't like mass market "country music", but this is real country to me.

5 out of 5 stars The band's second peak.......2003-11-04

The 1970s premier hippy-country-rock-swing band recorded four long players and an unlikely hit (a 1971 cover of Johnny Bond's "Hot Rod Lincoln") before jumping to Warner Brothers for this album. This self titled work represents the peak of the band's studio craft, ably assisted by John Boylan (the man who put The Eagles together), playing, singing, writing and collecting songs across their entire stylistic range.

Sad-sack country tales of displaced Okies spin back-to-back with jump blues and trucker tales (a finer reading of Lowell George's "Willin'" would be hard to find - never have "weed, whites and wine" been in more knowing hands), mixing it up with Hawaiian-themed pop and New Orleans R&B that draw on exquisite steel, piano and sax playing. Sausalito's Record Plant gave these tracks a clarity and crispness missing from the band's earlier albums, knitting the disparate material into an amazingly cohesive whole.

This is the refined version of the invention they debuted on "Lost in the Ozone," and though the vision may not have been as new, it was still just as powerful. This original lineup would last just two more albums, but before drifting on to separate fortunes, they waxed a legacy of inventive, highly-lovable albums, with this being chief among them. The entire catalog has been spottily reissued on CD, this being the first legitimate domestic issue of this Warner-era LP. A must-have for Cody fans, and anyone who loves brilliantly played eclectic hippy-country-swing-and-rock.

4 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" for any fan.......2003-10-17

This album is, in my view, second only to Tales From The Ozone with regard to composition and musicianship. Some of my absolute favorites are on this album. Their version of Lowell George's song, Willin', is the best I've heard (even better than the original by Little Feat). This band was at their peak with this album & Tales From the Ozone (only recently available on CD). This is Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen at their very best.

Expert musicianship, a diverse repertoire, and an active sense of humor become an explosive mixture in the hands of the Airmen. Recorded during a 1976 tour of England, Live One shows the genre-twisting band in all its maniacal glory. Western swing standards, rockabilly romps, R&B chestnuts, and a rash of truck-driving songs all find their way into the potent blend, not to mention their offbeat, drug-addled originals. Bill Kirchen's nifty guitar work, Andy Stein's punchy fiddle, and Bobby Black's pedal-steel forays provide the meat: no matter how goofy it gets, their formidable musical chops keep it all together. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Commander Rocks.......2007-03-14

The Commander never came out to Australia (that I know of anyway) so I didn't see him and his Airmen but listening to his live albums got me part way there. I bought all his albums up until the first, settled band broke up; I think there were about 6 or so albums. The best two were the Armadillo live one and this one. When first released on vinyl, this "Live One Here" got fairly ordinary reviews amongst the critics who much preferred the Armadillo album. For my money, the Armadillo was only slightly superior which means they are both great live albums from the rockinest, swinginest, stonedest, weirdest country-rock band of all time. Billy C, The Commander, Andy Stein, Bobby Black, Bill Kirchin; all fantastic musicians. Their choice of cover material was fantastic and in the Commander, Bill Kirchin, Kevin Blackie Farrell (friend but not band member), Billy C and John Tichy, they had some mighty fine songwriters. If you survived the 70's, loved beer, girls and reefer, loved to rock out and loved your music dirty, sweaty and with a sense of humour, then you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars IT DOSEN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!.......2005-06-20

I have bought many of the Commander's recordings over the years and finally had to break down and re-purchase this CD. My vinyl album was destroyed and I lost the cassettes that I had recorded over the years, so I had to have this CD. I just recently saw the commander and his new Airmen this past fall in Hartford and he's still rocking as ever. This album though is the commander at his best and in his prime with the best group of Airmen ever.
This is one of the best live albums that I have ever heard. Commander Cody is much more that just that guy who recorded Hot Rod Lincoln, he is a gem of a classic s--t kickin rocker.

5 out of 5 stars Never to Old.......2004-11-19

I first listen to this music when I was about 15 on a little ranch in Wyoming, and I'm still loving it. This album made me the hippie cowboy I am today. Still listenin to it in Wyoming 25 years later.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite LPA alblum.......2004-10-17

I have seen the Commander with and without the Lost Planet Airmen over many years... I own most of the titles listed here in Amazon, but this is by far the most bang for the buck. I have introduced many friends to the Commander by gifting this CD. After more than 25 years of listening to the band ... this is one of my all time favorite alblums in my music collection. This CD captures the band at the zenith of it's artistic arc. For a group that has a reputation for great live performances, this is the place to start.

4 out of 5 stars This Band Swings!.......2000-09-07

Just bought this CD & I must say CC&LPAM are a really good band! Their mix of boogie/woogie & western swing is very catchy & to think many of these cuts were recorded years ago. Check out their version of Smoke, Smoke, Smoke, which IMHO is superior to Asleep at the Wheels. Ray Benson's Hot Rod Lincoln version is almost a note by note copy of Bill Kirchen's with CC&LPAM. For the price this CD is a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best - finally on CD!.......2004-02-15

When CC & His LPA came out in 1975, Warner Bros was disappointed with the sales (they had very high expectations). They decided to spend very little to promote the next album --Tales from the Ozone-- and quickly let it go out of print. The 3rd Warner LP was live, not new material, just milking the fan base IMO as the band broke up.

I've been a big fan for 30 years, and I'll tell ya, both of the Warner studio albums are EXCELLENT and MUST HAVES. I've been literally waiting for decades to get a chance to replace my worn-out LPs with CD copies of both!!

Country rock doesn't get any better than this!

3 out of 5 stars +3/4 -- The original band's studio swan-song.......2003-11-04

The 1970s premier hippy-country-rock-swing band recorded four long players and an unlikely hit (a 1971 cover of Johnny Bond's "Hot Rod Lincoln") before jumping to Warner Brothers a trio of albums, of which this was the second. Though the original band was still together, this disc is hamstrung by a songlist that's light on originals, and production (courtesy of Hoyt Axton) that's flat and lackluster.

"Tales from the Ozone" draws almost entirely from a list of covers including pop and swing tunes from Leiber & Stoller and Cab Calloway, country songs from Hank Williams Jr., Billy Joe Shaver, and Blackie Ferrell (the latter of whom penned the classic "Mama Hated Diesels"). Axton created a flat production, with guitars, drums, fiddle, steel and vocals all competing stage front. Though not nearly as nuanced as their previous, eponymously titled, Warner LP, it does capture a sense of the band's live energy -- something explored even more fully on contemporaneous live albums.

The band was firing on all cylinders during their tenure at Warner, but this album stands in the considerable shadow of its predecessor. Worth a spin, especially for Airmen fans, but not nearly as essential as "Lost in the Ozone," "Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas," or "Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen."

4 out of 5 stars Boogie ON.......2007-03-09

I don't know what's with that other guy. Has he never heard recordings from the sixties before?! So the recording quality is not state of the art. Are we here to boogie or are we here to whine? Boo Hoo, Sister Sue. We're here to BOOGIE! Where else can you get texas roadhouse boogie? the Texas Jewboys? Try to find one of their albums, why don't you. I saw these guys live a couple of years ago. The first set was killer. So what if the band was sloppy drunk by the second set. They were supposed to be.

1 out of 5 stars Get a recording studio!.......2006-08-21

I'm not sure what's up with these recordings. I've had three of them now, two from amazon and one from another seller. Why don't these guys do decent sound recordings? They sound like someone went into a bar on friday night and turned on a tape recorder. They are terrible! I own over 1500 cd's and this is by a long shot the worst recording quality i've ever heard. The recordings are tinny and distorted, with tons of midrange, and even some distortion! Whoever made these recordings needs to get an ear! The songs themselves are good if you like Commander Cody. The music is what you would expect from this band.

5 out of 5 stars A good album..........2005-12-08

As a long-time commander cody fan, I was very happy to finally track down this album...as a lot of their stuff has been hard to find (but such a fun mission) This album is "Sleazy Roadside Stories" with a new name, however it is missing two tracks, which are "Four or Five Times" and "Boppin The Blues" Those only appear on sleazy roadside stores, however, those two tracks missing from this album does not take much away from it...it is a great albun. This album is the rest of "Deep In The Heart Of Texas" Which was supposed to be released as a double live album, but the record company said "no" (I verified this with the commander, it is true) Too bad, that would have been so much better of an album had it been released with all of it's content...but as most live albums are, they get chopped up. Oh well. AS far as this album being chopped up with band dialoge and song order, yes, it is, but it had to be! For example, before "milkcow blues" starts, Bill Kirchen says "We've got a cowboy tune rigged up next" and then you hear billy c. say "Something soft and sweet like milkcow blues" Obviously the kirchen intro does NOT go with milkcow blues...no, it goes with Sunset On The Sage, which appeared on Deep In The Heart Of Texas...so it was cut up becuase certain intros went wtih certain tracks that could not appear on this album, becuase they had appeared on the other live album....see what I mean?

As far as sound quality goes, I think it sound great. That's all I have to say about that.

As far as that "jailhouse rock" snippit goes....I don't know if that track was recorded at the armadillo, but i have a live verasion of that song, done by CC/LPA which is the full song without any wierd echo effects, and it sounds great...this song is from a radio show they did....around the same timeframe....74-or so...it might be that recording...messed with. HOnestly I think it's only on the disc as a space filler....still, this is a great album, as are all albums the commander ever released.

5 out of 5 stars Be warned.......2003-09-29

This is no comment on the quality of the album - I must have listened to it 6 times start to finish in the few days (and I bought it a good four years ago...). Just a warning to any mad collectors out there. This is "Sleazy Roadside Stories" with a different name and packaging. Exactly the same track list, recording place and date and pointless snippet of "Jailhouse Rock" at the end. So don't go buying both.

3 out of 5 stars NOT ONE OF THEIR BEST.......2001-11-11

IF YOU GAVE "DEEP IN THE HEART..." AND "WE HAVE A LIVE ONE..." FIVE STARS AS I DID, YOU MAY BE AS DISSAPOINTED IN THIS ONE AS I WAS. OBVIOUSLY, WHOEVER SPLICED THIS THING TOGETHER WAS NOT A COMMANDER FAN. THE FIRST CLUE IS THE MISSPELLING OF BILL KIRCHENS LAST NAME OR , DO WE HAVE A NEW MEMBER OF THE BAND? YOU HAVE TO ASSUME BOBBY BLACK IS ON STEEL, BUT HE IS NOT MENTIONED. THE CONTINUITY BETWEEN TUNES IS REALLY DISJOINTED FOR THE MOST PART. COMMUNICATION WITH THE AUDIENCE AND INTRO TO THE TUNES IS SPORATIC AT BEST. ITS ALMOST LIKE A STUDIO SESSION WITH APPLAUSE FADED IN AND OUT WITH LITTLE INTERACTION WITH THE AUDIENCE. THE LAST TUNE, "JAILHOUSE ROCK" COMES AFTER THEY HAVE SAID "BYE BYE". IT LASTS ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND SOUNDS LIKE AN EXPERIMENT WITH AN ECHO CHAMBER. WHOEVER THREW THIS CD TOGETHER DID A DISSERVICE TO THE COMMANDER AND HIS FANS AND SHOULD HAVE TO LISTEN TO RAP FOR THIRTY DAYS.

4 out of 5 stars The Commander live -- 'nough said!.......2001-06-09

I picked up my copy of "Bar Room Classics" when special ordering my favorite Commander Cody album, "Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas." I was not disappointed. "Bar Room Classics," also recorded live at Austin's now defunct Armadillo World Headquarters, is a well recorded tour of the Commander's eclectic music style. The initial attraction for me was that the album did not repeat any of the tracks from "Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas," and included the band's most well known hit, "Hot Rod Lincoln." Highlights of the album include the Elvis rockers "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Hard Headed Woman" done the Commander's way: boogie piano with steel guitar and sax. The Commander was equally adept at traditional country fare, especially "What Made Milwaukee Famous," "Wine, Wine, Wine," and the Western-Swing classic, "Milk Cow Blues." "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar" and "Hey, Hey, Hey" (a classic shouter) features the Commander's boogie woogie piano. Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen were a license to have fun, and at their best in a live environment. As such, "Bar Room Classics," along with "Deep in the Heart of Texas," capture the essense of one of the most entertaining bands to come out of Austin, Texas, in the 1970s.

    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ALBUM.......2005-12-08

Billy C. Farlow, and Commander Cody join up to put together a really great album, a couple nice do-overs of some 80s tracks (buddys cafe, lose it tonight) the whole album is just wonderful...Billy C. Sounds quite a bit different than he did in the 70s...but still very good. Crashpad Blues and Death Ray Boogie are two great tracks that fit Mr. Frayne very well. BUY THIS ALBUM it rocks.
