One thing's for certain: the Unbelievable Truth's lead singer, Andy Yorke, sure can sing his heart out. While this English trio's debut may receive attention solely because Yorke's brother is the acclaimed lead singer of Radiohead, Almost Here stands up quite well on its own musical merits. A particularly evocative soft-rock ensemble, Yorke, Nigel Powell, and Jason Moulster have cobbled together a calm, moving collection of hauntingly melodic songs. Yorke's rich vocals practically glow with a seductive melancholy that gains much strength from the band's rich tapestry of guitars, keyboards, and percussion. On "Higher Than Reason" his voice soars dramatically over a delicate arrangement of fanciful British pop. Gentle and hypnotic, this is one album of extremely sad songs that you shouldn't miss. --Mitch Meyers

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Breakthrough.......2007-06-04

The great rising band The Academy Is has a impressive album out called "Almost Here".This spectactuler breakthrough band has many wonderful songs and I have to say they are all splendid and exceptional. I recommend this band for everyone, especially if you're into alternative and up-beat music. This music is great for blasting in front of friends and family. I have to say this is a great band with many fun songs. This album is sure to be treasured by all. Can't go wrong here, no siree!

5 out of 5 stars ..........2007-02-06

as others mentioned, if you like fall out boy or panic! at the disco, you most likely will like the academy is...probably just because they're all fueled by ramen bands; they all pretty much go hand-in-hand.
but as for the CD, I think it's amazing. I honestly could listen to the whole thing and not skip one song (that's saying a lot coming from me).
and also, the lyrics are suprisingly good, in my opinion. they're clear and easy to comprehend and that's what I like.
I don't know, just something about this band is unique to me and there's something I just love. I'm never ashamed to admit how much I love them and I think they deserve every ounce of credit they get.

hopefully, I'll be able to see them on tour with fall out boy (genius tour...I was hoping so much that they'd open for FOB...two of my absolute favorite bands) if the tickets don't sell out within seconds of going on sale. I'd really love to see what their live performance is like.

all in all, definitely a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars I need to write this, so 'I'm going to be like everyone else'.......2007-01-07

I got this CD for Christmas, and I found it to be one of the best CDs I have ever owned. Sure, everyone says' "This CD is awesome." Well, this is CD is truly great. If you like bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco, then you will definately like The Academy Is... I found them highly addictive, William Beckett's voice is spectacular. I would seriously tell anyone who needs a little light rock in their lives to buy this CD. It truly is great.

5 out of 5 stars The best lyrics that you'll ever hear.......2006-11-10

When i first bought the CD i only listened to the first couple of songs on the it.I thought they were probably the best lyrics that i'll ever hear. But then i started listening to the rest of the songs. The lyrics are phenomenal and the music is to die for. I use the song and song lyrics were ever i can; in my profile, on my myspace, in my blog, and i write the lyrics all over my notebook. It's just to good to stay hidden.

4 out of 5 stars Almost.......2006-11-10

Im not going to lie this band is really good the only problem with the cd is that is really short. They have a wonderful fresh new sound. This cd should not be passed up.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19

I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15

Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.

4 out of 5 stars My dad loves it.......2007-02-13

If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2007-07-05

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19

Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.

Certainly worth the money!

1 out of 5 stars Re-release Rip Off !!.......2005-11-13

Why are recording artists re-releasing albums with "bonus tracks". I bought this CD the first time only a few years ago. Already a new version?? As a Carly Simon fan, I am supposed to contribute to her retirement fund by purchasing the CD again!? I guess if Mariah Carey can re-release "The Emancipation of Mimi" 3 times each time with additional songs and sell 4 million copies, why not Carly. I think if an artist appreciated their fans, they would release new songs on a CD single or just a new CD. I feel ripped off. I will step off my soapbox now, but not re-purchase this CD. My Christmas CD this year will be from the Lovemongers!!

5 out of 5 stars season's greetings delivered with sincerity.......2004-12-09

Now that Christmas is approaching I have been listening to Carly's Christmas album with renewed interest and appreciation. The lyrics on her own compositions are heartfelt especially "Forgive" which should set a humbling example to us all. Of the popular covers my favourite is "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" which is one of the best versions of this gorgeous song that I have ever listened to, the vocal arrangement is beautiful and Carly's voice soars in purity. Sadly, I won't be able to see Carly in New York later this month, but any of these songs will work wonders live. I can imagine what a gas seeing "Twelve Gates To The City" would be like performed live, especially if Billy Preston was on the keyboards. A considered album with something for everyone, spiritually and tradtionally as well as the more popular covers.

5 out of 5 stars A Cozy Addition to the Collection.......2004-12-09

At first I was reluctant to buy this CD based on some of the tepid reviews here and the casual manner in which it reportedly was recorded. Boy am I glad I got it. It is very intimate and cozy. Just loved the informal feel to it. Like a good friend singing to you with spirit to spare. I would highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Classy Christmas album - relaxing, warm and intimate.......2004-08-26

Carly's peak years were in the seventies, but she still sings as good as she ever did. This is a lovely album, with a mix of slow and mid-tempo songs, including some standards which everybody knows, together with some wonderful new songs.

Carly and Willie Nelson sing a duet - Pretty paper, which Willie wrote and Roy Orbison had a hit with back in the sixties.

Carly wrote The land of Christmas (Mary), while Heaven is a song originally written by Carly's daughter Lucy, which Carly and Lucy rewrote as a Christmas song.

Twelve gates to the city is apparently a very old song, but I don't ever remember hearing it before despite having a large Christmas music collection.

All these songs are brilliant, but perhaps the title track is the best of the lot - it certainly sets the mood of the album.

This is a masterpiece, as anybody familiar with Carly's music would expect. It's probably not one to play during the height of Christmas festivities (there are plenty of other, more upbeat, Christmas albums that serve that purpose well), but rather, this is one that you play when things have quietened down, and you can just relax.

5 out of 5 stars Great C.D.!!.......2003-12-25

This is a beautiful c.d. It's simple and understated in some ways and in some ways it's bigger and bolder than any other Christmas recording on the market. Carly Simon makes music that is "stripped back" and intimate. The miracle, the mystery, the seeking and the celebration are all components that Carly Simon has put in front of the listener.

The spiritual Christmas songs like "Silent Night", "O Come, All Ye Faithful", are treated with grace and tenderness. The soulful, "Twelve Gates To the City" is a song you'll find yourself singing over and over. Carly Simon's arrangement of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" is just great! The reggae beat along with Ben Taylor, her son, make this a classic remake.

The Christmas standards "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "I'll be Home for Christmas" are just beautiful. Carly knows how to take a standard and put her stamp on it without taking away from the song. "White Christmas" with Burt Bacharach, again has her stamp on it.

"The Land of Christmas (Mary)" is a song that Carly wrote and is probably one of the best songs she has written in years. It has all the qualities that you expect from a self-penned song by Carly. It's a great song with lots of emotion and soul. She also wrote "Forgive" which is very simple and beautiful. Andreas Vollenweider plays harp.

"Christmas is Almost Here" written by Livingston Taylor, "Pretty Paper" a duet with Willie Nelson and John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over) are all well preformed by Carly and very enjoyable.

"Heaven" is the song on this c.d. that brings it all together. Written by Lucy Simon (her sister) and Carly, it sets a tone that puts a "yearning" in the listener's heart to experience the miracle, the mystery, the celebration, the search and the Savior.

If you're looking for a "over produced" c.d. with all the "whistles and bells" then this may not be the c.d. for you. If you're looking for something that seems like Carly is singing in your living room while music is being played by Willie Nelson, Billy Preston, Burt Bacharach, Andreas Vollenweider, and other great musicians then this is the c.d.!!

This is a c.d. that will be played and enjoyed for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning.......2004-12-30

This rates in my top ten albums of all time. No other album has touched my soul like this one. I was living and working in London the year this was released (1998) and I read a review somewhere that described it as "Crowded House for Intellectuals". Nothing could be more accurate. This is an album that will make you celebrate everything in life the one day and philosophise and wallow the next. It hits a raw nerve every time - no matter how many times you have heard it before. I went on to buy all the singles from this album and every time I was pleasantly surprised - they have b-sides that are absolutely stunning. What a pity they went their separate ways after the second album, but I can say that they have sure left their mark in my heart and my mind.

5 out of 5 stars People who doesn't appreciate art stay away from this CD!.......2004-06-24

Come on guys, this band is intellectual, artistic, and with so different purposes from Radiohead... The orquestation, the lyrics (intelligent, by the way) and the pain that inspired the song creation processes in it makes the CD worth the money. It is unfair that this beautiful music has been forgotten and sold at such cheap prices...

Buy it. Enjoy art in its pure form.

5 out of 5 stars Forget what you know or what you think you know...............2001-12-28

About all that you have heard regarding this band and the comparisons to RADIOHEAD. They do not exist! Everyone seems to think that this band would not have made it (if you consider what they have done "making it") if the singer was not the brother of the lead singer of RADIOHEAD.

Well, simply put, this is a stupid way to view things. Aside from gene pool similarities, there are none. This band stands upon it's own merits. The song writing is stellar! The vocals are soothing and chilling and peaceful. The lyrics have a depth that is missing in 98% of todays so called music.

Forget trying to compare them to other bands. The whole..."if you like so and so, you will like this band" is stupid. Buy this record regardless of who or what you like. Throw all expectations out the window and buy this record! It matters NOT if you like Neil Diamond, or, Coldplay, or the Verve, or Zeppelin, or Earth Wind and Fire............. this band has something in every song for every song lover.

Well worth the time and effort to find this band.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better then this.......2001-12-10

I bought this Cd about a year ago, and didn't really listen to it. Then after a mounth or two it ended up in my Cd.player and it didn't later for at least a week. If you like this sort of music you can't get much closer to heaven then when you're listning to this album...

5 out of 5 stars Little brother of Radiohead? The answer is: No.......2001-09-23

Unbelievable Truth's lead singer Andy Yorke, might be Thom's little brother, but this doesn't mean they're a Radiohead rip-off. Absolutely not. In fact, Unbelievable Truth's music is much more mellow than Radiohead's. Almost Here, their debut, consists of very sweet easy-tuned songs (not meant for people who only listen to hard rock / metal). Great tracks such as 'Solved', 'Forget About Me', 'Building', 'Settle Down' and 'Stone' prove this band is not a one-day-fly. Well, maybe they are, since the band split in 2000... but that doesn't mean they will be forgotten. Of all three Unbelievable Truth albums, this is their best. The other two albums (Sorrythankyou and Misc.Music) are beautiful too, but miss that typical Almost Here-'vibe'.

If you're into Coldplay, you'll love this band.
If you're into Radiohead, you might love this band.
If you're into good music, this is your band!

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Carly Simon's first album of Christmas music is a family affair. Here, she covers songs by her former brother-in-law, Livingston Taylor (the title track), as well as reworking "Heaven Can't Be Far," a tune her sister Lucy penned in the '80s. Adding to the personal feel is Simon's duet with her son Ben Taylor on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman," the two voices blending with a precision that only blood relatives can achieve. But the intimacy and warmth of the disc aren't due only to the appearance of her nearest and dearest; it's also the choice and treatment of the material, which includes three originals as well as inventive takes on such seasonal classics as "Silent Night," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." In addition, Simon tackles the gospel favorite "Twelve Gates to the City" with the same verve and spirit that she lent to her massive hit "Let the River Run," from the Working Girl soundtrack. The biggest surprise under Carly's tree isn't her elegant, moving cover of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," but her sweet duet with Willie Nelson on "Pretty Paper." --Jaan Uhelszki

    2 out of 5 stars Carly's Dreaming of a Dull Christmas...........2004-04-18

Carly Simon has made some incredibly brilliant albums over the years - 1971's "Anticipation", 1972's "No Secrets", 1981's "Torch" and 1990's "My Romance". She has also single-handedly written the words and music for some pop-music masterpieces - "Legend in your Own Time", "Anticipation", "You're So Vain", and "Touched by the Sun". With that amazing voice, there's no doubt that she's a very talented lady. In the liner notes for this album, "Christmas is Almost Here", Carly says that during its recording, "Spontaneity was the name of the game", and admits "Some things may sound a little too gritty". Much of the material was recorded in a slap-up studio in a hotel room, although top musicians were used. There can be no argument that Carly can carry things off with perfection with a raw live band, as a viewing of the concert videos "Live at Grand Central Station" and "Live at Martha's Vineyard" prove. But somehow the forays on "Christmas is Almost Here" just don't come together. Maybe it's because we're used to hearing Carly's material polished and pristinely presented by such producers as Richard Perry, Ted Templeton and Arif Marden. Most of the tracks on "Christmas is Almost Here" sound clumsy, lack-lustre , and self-indulgent, and on some of the vocals Carly sounds as if she should have done a few more takes. I have been a big fan of Carly for twenty-seven years, and I must say with this effort she has reached a (hopefully) all-time low. I have all her albums, and this one's the pits, (along with the Piglet Movie soundtrack, her other most recent offering). So Carly, Christmas is almost here.....well, if this is the tone of Christmas this year, we might as well skip it. The most worthwhile message in this Christmas package is "Happy Christmas, (War is Over)". Maybe our world leaders - (U.S.A., Britain, Australia and elsewhere) should give this song a listen and really consider its sentiments.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Carly..........2003-12-15

Loved this original Christmas Album and especially the close family harmony with son Ben Taylor on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Also a nice duet with Willy Nelson on "Pretty Paper."

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas CD that only Carly can do.......2003-11-06

Carly Simon has always been ahead of everyone else. Before
Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart began doing the standards
Carly Simon put out "Torch" in 1981 (one of her best CD's).
This Christmas CD by Carly Simon is really a Carly Simon
album. There are some standards on it but the songs on it
she composed are Carly Simon songs. The CD is not overproduced
like most Christmas CD's. It is very laid back and peaceful.
Carly's voice sound amazing smokey. She has really put out
a very unique CD-but then again if you are a Carly Simon
fan you know what I am talking about.

2 out of 5 stars What is a Happy Xmas?.......2003-01-01

Since when did Christmas become Xmas, Carly?

    4 out of 5 stars Christmas Pleasure.......2002-12-29

Carly Simon has put together a handsome Christmas treat. This set is pared down without a lot of production flourishes. The set opens with former brother-in-law Livingston Taylor's soft and gentle tune "Christmas Is Almost Here," "When hope is almost gone, a distant light appears; Christmas is almost here." "O Come All Ye Faithful" allows Carly's voice whose timbre has always been among the most beautiful to shine through. Joel Shearer's electric dobro allows the inner strength of the tune to shine in Carly's voice rather than with dozens of horns. "See I need a way to pass through the pain," Carly sings on her own "The Land of Christmas." Carly sang "Silent Night" on the ABC Christmas special from Rockefellar square with her son Ben Taylor on supporting vocals. It is one of the most beautiful readings of this traditional carol. Billy Preston joins in on the spiritual "12 Gates to the City," which has nice build to it. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is given a soft reflective reading filled with longing. The reggae touch to "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" emphasizes the march-like quality of the song with Ben Taylor on vocals giving nice vocal variety to this little jewel. Sister Lucy Simon's "Heaven" is a pretty, stately tune, "Son of Joseph, son of Mary, son of love, he's born, son of all believers on this Christmas morn." Willie Nelson wrote "Pretty Paper"; and Carly brought him in to share vocals, a touch on the sad side, "Should you stop, better not, much too busy, you'd better hurry, my how time does fly, and in the distance, the ringing of laughter, and in the midst of laughter he cries." James Taylor closed his "October Road" with "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and Carly also has a version here whose unplugged feel allows the hopefulness to shine through. Another favorite of mine is Carly's take on John Lennon & Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)." The song builds and to a wonderful climax with Carly's vocals heartfelt. The liner notes to the CD say it was put together in a short period of time. It's an excellent effort. It'll be on our changer during Christmas 2003! Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying! ... Totally dissapointing!.......2005-03-02

I heard this recording and sadly got to say, "Almost Here" Duett with Aussie Superstar Delta Goodrem as well as the solo Brian McFadden Tracks are totally uninspirational, totally depressing and dull typical of so many 08/15 ballads played in the media. Delta Goodrem sounds totally dominated by Brian McFadden, making the Duett totally stale, and uninspirational, not inline of Delta#s Style at all, more of a typical Brian McFadden Song. I sadly give this Maxi a 1 Star review underlining that this recording is not recommedable for profound Music Fans, hating stale melancholical songs as these. Very dissapointing!
