Product Description

The follow-up to Black Labs critically acclaimed Geffen debut Your Body Above Me (feat. "Wash it Away," Time Ago), See the Sun is a lush, epic union of heartbreak and rock & roll, diamond-cut lyrics set to hard candy melodies, raging guitars and gin-soaked stories of love, loss and redemption. Like U2 and Live and the Goo's getting drunk together. Like a five star hotel, you check in and youre sorry to check out. Their new album has a depth and emotional range that broadens with each listen. Grammy award-winning engineer Tom Lord-Alge (Live, Blink 182) mixed most of the album. What shines brightest is the band's pop sensibility the liquid swirl of "Remember," the epic sweep of "See the Sun," the raging loss of "Without You," and the open-armed surrender of "Lonely Boy." Black Lab has contributed to the soundtracks of Spider Man, Can't Hardly Wait, Varsity Blues, Permanent Midnight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Party of Five, What I Like About You, MTV's The Real World, and most recently, Blade: Trinity.

5 out of 5 stars Another good addition to collection.......2007-02-11

If you like black lab then what can I say you'll enjoy it. I'm not one to analyze every aspect. If it makes feel like moving then that is all I care. I think I almost like it better than their first. You won't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2007-01-05

I've had this cd for over 2 months now and I can't stop listening to it. If you loved Black Lab back in the 90s, you will love them even more. Songs like Lonely Boy and Remember will stay in your mind for days. This is a must buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2006-12-26

Ever since I heard 'Learn To Crawl' on the Spider-Man Motion Picture Soundtrack I had a thirst to hear more of Black Lab's music. I bought this CD, praying I would not be let down. I wasn't one tiny bit. I LOVE this CD! I wasn't too pleased with Your Body Above Me, which I found moderately okay. I found this much superior. The only song I didn't like was Ecstasy, it just didn't have a catchy beat or lyrics and wasn't very memorable. With awsome songs like 'Lifelike' 'Wide Open' 'Without You' and 'Tell Me Why,' this CD will keep you entertained for hours while you hum along to your favourite songs. The lyrics were insightful and catchy. The music fitted perfectly to each and every song, each song being unique in it's own special way. Buy this CD, it's not a waste of money. Black Lab is an awsome bands which deserves more recognition. After listening for this, I have a thirst for a new album by Black Lab!

4 out of 5 stars great from start to finish.......2006-10-30

This is a great, great CD. It is not as impressive as 'Your Body Above Me', which is truly a masterpeice, but this is a great CD. Fantastic vocals and melodies, unforgettable. A great CD from a truly incredible band. Glad to see they are still around and putting out great music, anxious to hear their next effort.

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy this here.......2006-03-13

This is a very good album by a very underrated post-grunge band. This album is very different from "Your Body Above Me", but it's still a very solid, well-crafted effort. One gripe about it iss how rare it is,m though. It took me forever to find it, and I didn't want to pay $20 for it here, so I searched the internet. There is a webiste called Alternativeaddiction.com (google it). They loved this album, and they sell it for a mere $8 for download. And you pay through PayPal, so its a safe, fast transaction. So do yourself a fovor: but his great album and, if you haven't already, get "Your Body Above Me" (it's better). And buy "See the Sun" on Alternative Addiction's website.

Enjoy!

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

    5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Pete Murray surpasses and Expands.......2005-12-04

4 and a half stars, but he's an Aussie, so I'll round up for him.
Feeler was good. This, is a whole new step. The general standard of this album is much higher than "Feeler". He's expanded his songwriting, added less transparent lyrics, and experimented a little. The guitaring is catchier and more melodic, and his voice is a smooth as ever, but more controlled and more emotionally charged than on Feeler. While there aren't any weak tracks, there are some standouts such as "Class A", "Fly With You" and "George's Helper". All in all, a faster more upbeat album than Feeler, but still not without a slow gem every now and then.
I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys relaxing soft-rock.

Bonham Jr. and his four-piece move to fill the void left by Soundgarden with a hard rock sound keyed to singer Charles West's caterwauling voice. Bonham Sr. is back from the grave to thump along on "Can't Go On" and "Out on the Prey," while "Drown in Me" shows versatility. --Jeff Bateman

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Underappreciated Excellence.......2005-01-05

With this 4th release, "Bonzo the 2nd" has achieved and surpassed the musicianship and originality of his father's "band" (what was their name?..). This under-appreciated (and under-marketed) gem picks up where Zep was forced to leave off and takes us to a new sparkling evolution of the genre. Looking forward to the next metamorphosis of the "Bonham" sound--just as Zep evolved with each new release. But...where has Jason gone? I hope record company marketing blunders and uninformed reviewers have not soured him away from sharing his muse with us again. This disc holds court with any and all my "Classic Rock" mainstays.

3 out of 5 stars Bonham re-treads past and present styles on third release.......2003-06-07

    By C.S.

Legendary British group Led Zeppelin's 2003 acension to the top of the charts some 25 years after the group's breakup with "How The West Was Won" bolsters the old phrase "aint nothing like the real thing" Imitators from both U.S. coasts tried to master their bombastic rock / blues style. Heart did it in the 70's and in the late 1980's Kingdom Come pinched heavily from the Zeppelin sound.Though the latter was a respectable effort compared to other acts, the watered down attempts have made fans yearn to listen to more of the true creators. The Zep reunion's,have been a cross between brilliance and borderline disaster. The,Live Aid show in 1985, the Page - Plant collaborations- minus bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, (a move that strained the band relationship),and the oft criticized Jimmy Page / David Coverdale collaboration where Coverdale's Plant like delivery was viewed to be an un- original rip off caused many to dub the Whitesnake lead singer David "Cover Version" .
    >
Sandwiched betweeen those events was Zeppelin's performance at the 40th Atlantic Records Anniversary in 1988. The drummer playing with the Jones, Plant and Page was none other than Jason Bonham, son of John Bonham, the band's legendary drummer who died of an alcohol overdose prior to Zeppelin's 1980 comeback tour from the "In Through The Out Door" album.
On the heels of his impressive performance w/ Zeppelin and mild rumors of a comeback, the younger Bonham formed the band and named it "Bonham". After releasing "The Disregeard of Timekeeping" and "Mad Hatter", the group was re-named "The Jason Bonham Band". In 1997 they released "When You See The Sun, a record that is immersed in Zeppelinesque vibe, tone, and tenor and stands out as the best attempt to re- capture the Zep feel, coupled with a touch of Soundgarden.
That being said, it sounds like a recipe for copy- cat chaos. But the strength of the hooks here make it a better listen than some would imagine. The key ingredient is Bonham's infusion of bombastic drumming incorporating well -timed finesse, smooth hi- hat work, and nasty, funky tempo chages reminiscent of his father's pulsating rhythms.
Charles West, a hold over from the original Bonham band, takes over the vocal duties from departed Plant sounding pipester Daniel McMaster.
His Chris Cornell tonation sounding voice (of Soundgarden fame) creates an instant obstacle whether you like Sondgarden or not.BR> But the heart of the matter on "When You See The Sun" is if you cannot get John Bonham, then what is the next best scenario? Listening to the NEXT BEST THING; his son Jason flailing away like his father.
He comes through mightily on the strong chorus of " Drown In Me" and uses some smart sampling of his father's drum fill on "Out On The Prey", featuring bluesy guitar,,mired in Stone Temple Pilot Like vibe with a heavier kick (drum).
"Kiss The World Goodbye",an ironic song slogan given the climate people are living in, seems like a copycat Lenny Kravitz meets T-Rex riff. Yet Bonham brings a freshness to it with his powerhouse beat.
Portions of this record are certainly predictable and easy to peg like" the Zeppelin IIIish sounding "Ordinary Black and White" and the 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" (Zeppelin I) feel of " Rain " .The pace picks up,albeit in Zep Like fashion, with the explosive "Cant Go On", where Bonham again adds straight-forward punch with heavy bass drum patterns and potent snare drum pops. If unconvinced at this point, the instrumental "The Unknown" and the etheral and ambient "Shagkabob",a number that contains infectious rhythm, earthy sounding synth, and crunchy Les Paul edge put the final hammer on "When You See The Sun".

Though not amazingly ground- breaking by any means, being the son of a legend like John Bonham makes it strangely difficult for a family member in the same business to assess fairly.Certanly waiting for industry types to exhibit patience is hard to come by.
The romance attatched to Zeppelin and others blues- rock pioneers have straddles theline between legend and myth. Any attempt for an artist to venture into blues rock path wil be beseiged by a a barrage of criticism - the first being that they are a hand mew down version of "the real deal".
Being related to anyone in a prolific band like Led Zeppelin as far as industry insiders are concerned, is a liabilty.
Politics aside, a mistake was made on Bonham's part to have a copy- cat singer do the vocals that added fuel to the fire of this album re-treading past themes. Though it knocks off a number of points from "When You See The Sun", those that missed the Zep thing the first time should find this record to be a steal and the album has enough booming moments to recieve (by the narrowest of margins) a three- star rating.

5 out of 5 stars LED ZEPPELIN LIVES!.......1999-12-12

AWW, what a fabulous cd. This sounds like it could pass as the greatest "undiscovered" Led Zeppelin album ever. Not to say it's unoriginal, the album comes blasting like a cool, fresh breath of air in a world dominated by wannabe rockers. Greta, monsterous riffs, courtesy of newcomer Tony Catania, are all over, powerful vocalist Charles West, also new, wailes away(sounding a bit like Robert Plant, but not trying to be), and ex-Bonham bassist John Smithson returns to help out drummer Jason Bonham fuel the music with charisma and energy. Every song has that Zeppelin-esque feel to it, and it should. Jason Bonham does a no-brainer showing who his major influence is. Anyone who wants probably the best hard-rockin' album of 1997, and want to hear what great music is all about pick this one up. It is far more superior than the last Page/Plant garbage, and John Bonham helps his son out by coming out of the grave to play drums on two tracks, that's right, John Bonham is on this. "Can't Go On", and, "Out on the Prey", are those tracks. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars excellent effort. keep up the good work boys!.......1999-06-19

This is a great album that will certainly take you back to the days of Zeppelin, but has its very own 90's hard rock style. This is a very under-rated album deserving of more record sales and critical aclaim. Tony Cantana's guitar playing is uncanny and rocks the house. Jason Boham will make his daddy proud with this effort. Lead singer, Charles West sings with a passion and love for the music that is all but missing in today's world of rock. "Ordinary Black and White" is poppy, but great to listen to and very meaningful. "Ki the World Goodbye" is a real treat for any zep fan. The entire album is consistent and rocks hard, but never lacks maturity and effort. These guys are great arm wrestlers too! DO NOT CHALLENGE THEM BACK STAGE! YOU WILL LOSE!

      5 out of 5 stars Broadway Divas.......2007-01-22

Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.

5 out of 5 stars Love the choices.......2006-08-11

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

      2 out of 5 stars coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15

The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.

5 out of 5 stars Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.

Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

5 out of 5 stars it turned out to be rather good, after all.......2007-01-24

i had problems with the post office when i ordered this initially, but Amazon straightened everything out. their customer service team really came through. i am well aware this is not a review of the album (yet), but it does inform potential buyers that the customer service here is outstanding. anyway, as for the cd: there are 3 amazing tracks on this disc, making the overall purchase VERY worthwhile. for Patton fans, the closest comparison is the Kaada/Patton Romances CD in the way that it has some actual lyrics, but mostly sounds. the orchestration on this is stunning on most tracks. on track 10, i cannot believe the drums, it sounds like a programmed beat, not a live orchestra. i obviously don't have a degree in this subject, but i can tell you that it's moving, uplifting, and worldly sounding. really diverse, yet good flow. #7,9, and 10 are my favorites. #7 reminds me of these crazy old filmstrips you'd watch in music class in elementary school. actually it sounds like a cut directly from the movie Masque of the Red Death with Vincent Price. oddly on this same disc, track 9 could be played at a wedding and it'd fit right in. once #9 or 10's in your head, it's stuck- they're good ones. hope this review was helpful.

      3 out of 5 stars a bit sterile.......2005-06-04

I bought this CD because of the extremely positive reviews I had read on this page, but, after listening to it a few times, I thought I needed to provide some counterpoint. I held many expectations for this album upon reading the reviews, few of which were realized.

I don't know why one reviewer would have listed all those genres and composers, insinuating that Virginal Co Ordinates is some sort of culmination of 500 years of music. It's not. It's not a bad album, but it's no milestone. If you're expecting "Scottish folk and Villa-Lobos and Icelandic post-rock all on the same album," you'll be disappointed.

I'll take you through "Doorway to the Sun," and you can decide for yourself:

-starts off, we're at 3:30 into it, and there's been some pizzicato noodling. a little dissonance. some of pink floyd's "echoes" sound effects in the background, seems like. yeah, this has been going on for a while.

-alright, it's building, a little. we've got some percussion now. we're 7 minutes into it. it's got a good vibe to it, but it feels like the music that would play during a video montage of me making a toothpick structure.

-alright, 9:30. the music has really layered itself to a point of cohesiveness, and that's gratifying. it took a very long time to do so, though, and the song could have equally as effectively started right here. it hasn't been "bending genres" for these past nine minutes, after all, it's been building up within the confines of one, one genre, one tempo, one key.

-now we're at 14:00, and mike patton has been chanting along. the vocals are another instrument, which is always refreshing, especially when patton does it, but is something going to happen? i could fall asleep to this music, but should i be actively listening to it?

-ever play medal of honor, or whatever that wwII videogame is with the trumpet in the beginning? man, this whole album reminds me of that.

-hey, the music is deconstructing itself exactly the way it built up, but backwards.

      -now it's over.

So, as you can see, I did not just have a life-altering experience. It's good music to put on while you're sitting in a cubicle or reading an intense book, but otherwise it gets a bit dry, emotionless, repetitive, and predictable.

      5 out of 5 stars What if . . . .......2005-05-10

What if the entire history of Western Christian mysticism, William Blake, plainsong, Tantum Ergo, polyphony, Renaissance dance, Baroque, German Romanticism, Gamelan, South Indian classical, Japanese folk song, Icelandic chill-out, Olivier Messiaen, Alva Noto, microtonalism, Samuel Barber, Daniel Lanois without the cheese, Native American, Appalachian, Scottish folk, North African Berber, Nu-pop, ambient drone, Minimalism, Industrial, beat poetry, cosmic consciousness, post-rock, Toronto Indie Apocalypse, Van Dyke Parks, chamber jazz, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Gustav Holst, The Beach Boys, Sun Ra, Eric Satie, Heitor Villa Lobos, Phillip Glass, and New Music sensibilities were all to be assimilated, processed, deconstructed, and retrieved in one enormous, death-defyingly gorgeous, show-stoppingly virtuosic yet eminently listenable and instantly accessible disc? That's a pitiful attempt to capture in words what is going on in this absolutely astounding album, certainly a landmark, a watershed in the history of recorded music.

Just the shear scope of the soundscape boggles the mind. A basic six-piece unit (Michael White, violin; Mike Patton, voice, electronics; Tim Young, electric guitar; Tucker Martine, live sound processing; Evan Schiller sound movements; and Evyind Kang, violin and composer) is augmented by a sixteen-piece orchestra featuring woodwinds, brass, strings, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, accordion, percussion, and drums. Kang has written some absolutely mesmeric compositions featuring all of the styles noted in the first paragraph, which are then arranged and played in a most compelling and beguiling manner. Certainly the inclusion of such noted sound manipulators as Patton, Schiller, and Martine contribute greatly to the sweep and grandeur of the musical palette. But perhaps the most salient fact about this disc is that it is a live recording, albeit, thankfully, with none of the annoying audience interruptions that all too frequently accompany such undertakings.

The centerpiece is the 19:23 "Doorway to the Sun," which must be heard to be believed (or vice versa). Here composer Kang pulls out all the stops, creating a map of the musical universe that encompasses the farthest reaches of Ultima Thule, maelstroms, blasted heaths, ocean bottoms, planetary cycles, black holes, desert sunsets, double helixes, equinoxal precessions, 80-foot Cortez Reef, Uluru, Rapa Nui, Chichen Itza, and all points in between. The chantlike vocals coming in at about 10:20, courtesy of the inimitable Mike Patton, largely unintelligible, yet strangely understandable, s(h)immer with repeated words/phrases like "seven, seven, seven key [____]" "interplanetary [____]" "astral intelligence gave them," "liberation receive them," "heavenly firmament kiss it," "multiplicity dissolvent" "spirit of the innocents save them"--or similar utterances. And even though they make no rational sense, they resonate with the deepest racial memories and human sentiments summed up by the world's greatest myths and religious stories. Sound like New Age blather? Maybe, but I don't think so.

The rest is nearly as remarkable, if not quite as ambitious and far reaching. I am especially taken with the title cut, impossible dense yet unfolding with crystal clarity, sonically startling with its ominous percussive underpinnings, white noise wash, and massive brass assault yet featuring the most remarkable sound imaging where even single string instruments and belllike nuances ring out from the speakers. Indeed, from a production standpoint alone, this disc deserves highest praises. Other favorites include "Sidi Bou Said," with its faux East Indian textures, oriental oboe, and spot-on ensemble voicings, and "Innocent Eye, Crystal See," a simple melodic statement that just keeps unfolding with a magical assortment of string, percussive, and wind voicings until it becomes, finally, an incredibly rich sound tapestry. Not surprisingly, my favorite numbers are the three longest, where Kang and the players get to display the full monty of their instrumental and vocal glory.

Eyvind Kang, someone always worth listening to, has here produced not only his masterpiece, but in my humble opinion, the greatest disc of the young millennium, music that sets the bar so impossibly high that I don't see it being topped anytime soon.

      5 out of 5 stars Recommended, and that's not auto-Patton Praise.......2005-04-24

A rare example of work that is original (some very interesting use of violin et al), beautiful, and haunting. Those are words I would normally stone someone for using, but this album deserves them. Don't assume that you'll like Kang's other work if you like this. Mike Patton contributes- I like a lot of his work and recognise he's a lightning rod for gushing praise/criticism; but the result is subtle and his vocals add to the strength of the performance (believe this is live). It's also very accessible- I listen to all manner of noise that most of the people around me loathe, but all and sundry seem to love this one...

5 out of 5 stars Kang and Patton, a perfect team........2005-04-02

I have always loved Mike Patton's work. I'd never previously heard of Eyvind Kang before this album. A friend put me onto this and it is a masterpiece. Put this album on with some headphones, close your eyes, and this album will take you beyond what words can describe.

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.
