Album Description

Salad Days was one of the two longest-running 1950s English musicals in the West End, the other being The Boy Friend. Features the original London cast recording plus bonus tracks including selections from The Duenna and Salad Days, performed by composer Julian Slade.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the most charming British musical ever written; a rare gem.......2007-02-13

Originally commissioned and written in 1954 as a summer 'filler' show for the Bristol Old Vic Theatre, SALAD DAYS struck a rare chord with audiences. Composer-lyricists Dorothy Reynolds and Julian Slade unwittingly tapped into a mood of nostalgia, which post-war audiences warmly responded to. It transferred to London's Vaudeville Theatre in August of 1954 and ran for 2,282 performances.

Young lovers Timothy (John Warner) and Jane (Eleanor Drew) have just graduated from university. During their first true summer as adults, the pair are faced with the task of finding employment. A mysterious drifter (Newton Blick) offers them money in exchange for taking care of a piano - named Minnie- for the period of one month. When played, the piano gives people the ability to dance and sing, and pretty soon both Timothy and Jane have the entire populace of London caught up in the spell. But when Minnie goes missing, the chase is on to find her before the drifter returns...

The show was written to accommodate the 12-member company of the Old Vic theatre troupe. Economically the show was very easy to run, requiring the bare minimum of sets, and the orchestra consisted of only two pianos. Sunny nostalgia shines through every part of this most delightful musical. Songs like "I Sit in the Sun", "We Said We Wouldn't Look Back", "Oh! Look at Me", and "The Time of My Life" are so honest in their simplicity. No crashing chandeliers or flying helicopters were necessary for SALAD DAYS to become a theatrical blockbuster.

Eleanor Drew and John Warner are the perfect central characters around whom the entire show revolves. The supporting cast includes James Cairncross, Yvonne Coulette, Dorothy Reynolds (as Timothy's Mother), and Michael Meacham.

The original cast recording conjures up a fair idea of how and why the show was so successful. It essentially presents a 'tab version' of the show, complete with dialogue. Originally released as an LP on the Oriole label (and briefly on CD in the early '90s through Sony), the London cast of SALAD DAYS has been reissued on compact disc through the Sepia label (utilising 78rpm masters).

The disc has been filled out with some great bonus tracks. Julian Slade plays the piano on two different medleys from the show; and there are two "vocal gems" selections with Patricia Clark and Charles Granville.

Also included are selections from THE DUENNA, an earlier musical from the duo of Reynolds & Slade (recorded shortly after the London transfer of SALAD DAYS) starring Jane Wenham and John Neville, joined by SALAD co-stars Eleanor Drew and James Cairncross.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Belew at his best!.......2002-02-19

This is a wonderful collection of Adrian Belew's talents. A great choice for anyone who would like a good intro to this amazing musician. For those long time fans, it is surely a must.

4 out of 5 stars Belew Grooves On Acoustic Roots In Salad Days.......2000-03-27

After losing himself in the moody bitterness of 1994's "Here" and the inarticulate, half-finished "Op Zop Too Wah", Adrian Belew returns to the optimism and skillfully crafted pop of his older work with the acoustic album, "Salad Days". Taking the better songs from his King Crimson days and a bevvy of work from his masterpiece "Mr. Music Head" and the near perfect "Young Lions" and "Inner Revolution", Belew's vision seems to have returned intact. His songwriting is wonderful and creative, his voice hasn't been this powerful in a long time and his guitar work, even in an acoustic capacity, is stunning. Lyrically, Belew tackles subjects ranging from a rhino's perspective in his cage, a narrative given by a dead dinosaur, and most touchingly, a narration by a railroad worker who is watching his beloved trains, and himself, become obsolete. There are also live versions of the Crimson song "Three Of A Perfect Pair" and "Fly", a stunning track that outdoes the original studio version. Belew's artistic talent had been waning as of late, so it is a pleasure to hear him reworking some of his older material. "Salad Days" isn't his best work, but it comes close. Personal Favorites: the aching simplicity of "The Rail Song", the beautifully rendered live version of "Fly" and the lumbering Crimson song, "Dinosaur". Representative Lyrics: "All around us the rules are changing/ taller walls and stronger cages/ nothing is sacred or too outrageous" ("Cage"); "I gave her my best years/ well what can you do but laugh/ I don't expect she'll ever be coming back" ("The Rail Song")

5 out of 5 stars If you like Adrian Belew you will like this CD !.......1999-07-24

At a time when everbody is unplugged it only seems fitting that Adrian Belew should do it. More than just being unplugged one really gets the sense that many of these songs are being presented as he first played them; at the conception stage. Other songs, such as "Men in Helicopters" are stripped of a larger production yet added is a moving string ensemble that is perfect. An acoustic version of "The Rail Song" makes me think of why I love Belew so much; it is the lyrical message and musical simplicity that are combined to make touching songs. Two live songs round this CD out and make it a collectible item for a Belew fan. This CD is great !

5 out of 5 stars The stunt guitarist shows utter mastery with ToaPP acoustic!.......1999-05-27

It's a wonderful album, probably more geared towards the mainstream, who are not familiar with Belew. Mostly because of the near lack of newly released tracks, only two new ones here. But all in all, it's a real great album. Keep in mind this is not an electric album, it is a totally acoustic album, although it's amazing how heavy it gets at times. Well worth the listen.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, creative, very musical and different........1999-03-12

This is really exceptional stuff. Adrian shows just how great a songwriter he is by presenting his music wih as much simplicity as possible, and all-acoustically! "Never Enough" is an excellent pop tune in the traditional sense, and "Men In Helicopters" shows what a really creative artist can do with pop music forms. And the two sound-collage pieces on the album show just how inventive he can be in a different way. And I'm sure King Crimson fans will get a huge kick out of hearing his live, solo acoustic rendition (in Argentina!) of "Three Of A Perfect Pair." I wonder if maybe people who think of Adrian as being kind of a technically-oriented musician will be encouraged to realize that it's his personality that is what draws you in the most, and it really comes out here in his excellent lyrics, singing and unique approach to life in general. Pretty darn charming! I would think if you didn't really know much about Adrian Belew, this would be a good place to start.

a prototypical version of what later became the great colossal youth album. id steer new fans to that album (CD includes the testcard ep), while hip archivists will enjoy (or minimally appreciate) this one. originally issued in a cassette pressing of 30, this is a loving reissue with nice reminiscence from bandmember stuart moxham. will give your collection some cred but will probably stay out of your player most of the time.

4 out of 5 stars more than decent.......2000-06-11

this is a great collection of early demos. The Young Marble Giant's masterpiece is "Colossal Youth" though, and I wish they'd carry that. Still, this is a great album, holding vast similarities to Eno (especially Another Green World) and the Magnetic Fields. If you like sound blips via Stereolab, this is their roots.

I have no idea if this is really a "Live" recording being offered here, but the Wisconsin Avenue Tour cd is available on Revelation Records online store for only $10. It contains 15 songs from demos, the single, the ep, and a couple unreleased songs from their final recording session. Definetly, a great cd, and somewhat hard to find... but why pay this absurd price for it? Go to RevHQ.com for the fair price!

5 out of 5 stars Core of feeling.......2001-08-03

I remember when I first heard this band when I was in highschool. The song 'Angel' changed how I viewed things. Illustrates beauty in the struggle, enlightenment in pain. This is a deeply moving CD, one of the only CD's that I own that I've never gotten tired of. The blending of her crystalline voice, almost choir like, with the emotional wailing of the male members in the band, make a epic of contrast. Truly worth investigating, if you like emotional music something to make you feel again, this is it

I love finding unique items and treasures and this CD by the boys in DD fits into that category. I have played it over and over and introduced this music to a wide variety of people. It is nice to hear music from a group that doesn't fit into a stereotypical genre of today's tunes. By the way, my 5 month old LOVES it! :) Rock on nephews!

Finally I can carry Dehra Dun around with me all the time. I fell in love with the meltiest of the melt at a live show and have been a fan ever since. Now that I can listen to them anytime I want to is FANTASTIC. I recommend Dehra Dun to anyone tired of the same old junk, especially the likes of Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez.

5 out of 5 stars a small ode to erick, matt, jeremiah, joey, and josh........2005-02-24

although i'm just your average listener without proper credibility in the way of technical musical analysis, i know a good thing when i hear it.

there is a vivacity and personality to it that is, however sadly, sort of rare. the music is intelligently engineered but manages to sound completely organic at the same time. it's lyrically distant enough to escape being sappy, but still steps far enough into your personal space for you to be able to relate on one level or another. the vocals are absolutely amazing... incredibly unique and versatile... borderline harsh at some points and downright lovely at others.

i could go on for quite a while but that isn't necessary. the music speaks for itself. :) .

4 out of 5 stars the lovely Julian Slade musical in all it's glory.......2003-10-18

SALAD DAYS was one of the longest-running musicals in London in the 1950s, featuring a lovely score by Julian Slade. The fanciful plot involves Timothy and Jane, who have just graduated from university before getting married. On a balmy summer's day, they meet an old man in the park who owns a magical piano that makes everyone dance. The old man says they may borrow the piano for 1 month and then bring it back. However, things hardly go as planned. Jane and Tim enjoy an eventful summer full of love and heartache, before the story rushes to it's inevitable happy ending.

This cast album features members from the acclaimed 1982 London revival of SALAD DAYS, with Julian Slade himself playing one of the pianos featured on the recording. Christina Matthews offers up a thrilling soprano voice as Jane and sings two of the score's choice numbers, "I Sit in the Sun" and "The Time of My Life".

Adam Bareham is good in the role of Tim, and sings wonderfully in "We Said We Wouldn't Look Back" and "The Saucer Song". Sheila Steafel is excellent in the dual-roles of Timothy's Mother and Asphinxia, the exotic cabaret diva who sings the comical "Sand in My Eyes". Elizabeth Seal (IRMA LA DOUCE) is criminally under-used as Jane's Mother.

Others in the cast include Barry Martin, Malcolm Rennie, Osmund Bullock, Tricia George, Sue Aldred and David Urwin.

A lovely cast album and very nice for the price!

The songs in this album are very melodic, the tunes carry you on a swanky ride. You won't even realize time is passing as you become enveloped in the world of King of France. Kind of like the Beatles + Velvet Underground. The more you listen to it the more you will love it.
