5 out of 5 stars some great f'ing songs!.......2006-01-11

I've been listening to sp for many years, and this one's still my favorite. Fascist Jock Itch, with it's simpistic yet angry guitar and the great drumming gets the blood flowing, even if it's near impossible to understand what Ogre is saying. Tin Omen and Rodent are also great songs, although I prefer the Rodent version from Dystemper more. But the greatness of Worlock, wow... It is still one of my favorite songs of all time, even years after I first discovered it. The haunting lyrics, the main chorus, and the buildup to the end... Just brilliant! None of the Worlock remixes compares to the original

It's come to my attention from a Wikipedia article about the lawyer, Jack Thompson(He's a lawyer who is trying to fight against the videogame industry and wants to censor violent videogames), that an Amazon reviewer gave his book a 5 star rating during what JT called a bookstorming and that review was removed (They filled up the book with negative tags, photoshopped pictures, and 1 star reviews). The positive review was by a user called BushSupporter who appears to be against Skinny Puppy as well as videogames. Anyway, if you're here because you hate Jack Thompson and are curious about the band this may be a good CD for you if you want to listen to a combination of metal and electronic music. Al Jourgensen's influence on this album provides a few songs with some great guitar work along with several electronic songs that have a great beat. What may turn you off is Ogre's vocal style which has changed in recent releases. He snarles like a psychotic beast with heavily distorted stream of consciousness vocals. The Greater Wrong of the Right and The Process are two other releases that may be more for you if the vocals don't sound good to you. At least give it a chance and see what you think.

I'm not a Skinny Puppy fanatic, but of the albums I've heard, "Rabies" is my favorite. Alot has been made of the production from Al Jourgenson, but the influence is subtle, and this is no Ministry. Most of this is excellent, but favorites are "Rodent", "Worlock", "Rivers", and of course "Tin Omen". Anybody new to the band would be best off with this album, "Too Dark Park", or obviously "The Singles Collection". This is simply an essential album from one of the essential industrial bands, and "Rabies" will have you foaming at the mouth.

5 out of 5 stars The Puppy With Rabies CD, It's Not Mainstream!!!.......2005-05-26

Rabies is perhaps the Skinny Puppy cd that could've came close to the mainstream at the time it came out in 1989. However, this is Skinny Puppy we're talking about. There's just no room in the mainstream for the likes of this innovative, harsh-conscious band. With that said, Rabies isn't all that accessible to the majority of music listeners. Has Puppy ever been that accessible? Really? The main difference b/w this cd and previous cds is mainly that it's more guitar-driven. What that does is just add another nice touch to SP's evolution.

I mention this mainly because Rabies is always mentioned as Ministry-influenced. I don't think Ministry hold a big place for this cd. Most of the mood, texture, and style found in Rabies is definitive Puppy. Nightmarish, demonic voices. Insane, druglike music. Crazy horror-movie samples. Typical Puppy.

Make no mistake, Rabies is one of SP's toughest, most essential cds around. Once the listener tunes out Ministry's presence, Rabies is certain to feel like the hard-hitting, head-trippin' work that Skinny Puppy had probably intended it to be. It's an hour of ferocious greatness that will melt your brain and you'll be glad to repeat the effects. One more thing, check out the original version of Tin Omen on their B-Sides CD. It is actually better than the regular version.

One of the true marks of a horror artist is to create something that is at once completely terrifying and utterly fascinating. It's not about blood, guts, and gore, as anyone who's ever seen Psycho could tell you, but about suspense, story, and the characters themselves. Edgar Allan Poe's stories rank as some of the greatest horror ever written--and that's before the likes of Iggy Pop, Diamanda Galás, Abel Ferrara, and Christopher Walken (chilling, as he reads from "The Raven") got their hands--er, voices--on Poe's words. This two-disc compilation is a success if only for treating Poe's texts in the right manner, with subtle backing music and sounds and restrained, ominous performances from the readers (other fine readings come from Ken Nordine, Dr. John, and Jeff Buckley). One reason for the album's quality may be producer Hal Willner; if you enjoy this, you might also want to check out his work on Weird Nightmare: Meditations on Mingus, The Carl Stalling Project, Vol. 1, and Spare Ass Annie. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars A masterful interpretation.......2005-06-27

There isn't a child who grew up in this country who hasn't been influenced, in one way or another, by the poems and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. Or writer or producer or musician, for that matter, it seems. If we have one thing in common, one little shared bit of ourselves, it may be a love (or at least respect) of Poe - his irony, his forboding sense of things not really the way they seem, his ability to look not only into the eyes of us all, but into our dreams, our nightmares, our inner, hidden secrets. That was his talent.

Musical producer Hal Willner knows it. The beat poet Allen Ginsberg once told him in passing, "Everything leads to Poe." And seeming to follow that lead, Willner ushers everyone and everything he can think of into his project - "Closed On Acount Of Rabies" (the title is based on a new theory that Poe may actually have died of rabies instead of the alcoholic debauchery that is a major part of the Poe legend) features the talents of varied performers such as Marianne Faithfull, Christopher Walken, Diamanda Galas, Iggy Pop, Ken Nordine, Jeff Buckley, Dr. John, Deborah Harry, Gabriel Byrne... Ginsberg was right.

The disc is beautifully produced. From Marianne Faithfull's opening reading of "Alone," a moving, mood-setting short poem that sets the stage and establishes the late poet's sense of isolation (she returns later to read the famous "Annabel Lee"), the listener knows a special treat is in store. Careful, subtle sound effects and musical accompaniment accent the performances with added drama. Actor Christopher Walken's reading of "The Raven" is right in synch with the quirky characters he's known for portraying in film, and Iggy Pop delivers "The Tell-tale Heart" with just the necessary overly-controlled restraint the story demands.

Other highlights of the two disc set include Ken Nordine performing the poem "The Conqueror Worm" and full-length renditions of the Poe classics "The Black Cat," read by Diamanda Galas, a particularly hypnotic "Berenice" read by Dr. John and "The Masque of the Red Death" read by Gabriel Bryne.

Oddly, the discs' weaker moments come from musical interpretations of "To Helen" and "The Haunted Palace," sung by Ed Sanders, and a strangely uninspired "The City and the Sea," sung by Deborah Harry and the Jazz Passengers.

One of the most entrancing performances comes from Jeff Buckley as he reads "Ulalume." When he reads "...I replied, 'This is nothing but dreaming, let us on by this tremulous light - let us bathe by this crystalline light... Then my heart it grew ashen and sober, as the leaves that were crisp'd and sear, as the leaves that were whithering and sear; and I cried "It was surely October on this very night of last year that i journeyed, I journeyed down here, that I brought a dread burden down here, on this night of all nights of the year ; oh what demon has tempted me here?..." it's clear that Edgar Allan Poe's influence remains stong, true and unabated to generation after generation of creative talents.

5 out of 5 stars What a spectacular period seven assembly this could be!!.......2002-02-27

These kinds of tribute albums are always tricky, even when they are just dealing with a musician's body of work. What Hal Willner has done on this two-CD set is amazing, though. To try to collect the pieces from Edgar Allan Poe's eclectic catalog of stories and poetry, find the write artists to read, sing, and/or interpret those works, and then to package it all appropriately was a major feat. Every track is not a five-star work, but the collection earns the five stars for sheer effort and uniqueness. From the cover art by Ralph Steadman, appropriately weird and spooky-looking, to the fabulous liner notes by Charles Baudelaire and Willner, himself, this CD set has been an indispensable part of my Grade 11 English (American Literature) curriculum since its release.

Everyone is going to have his or her favorite tracks/stories/poems, but here are mine:
1. Gabriel Byrne reading "The Masque of the Red Death" -- great accent, cool music and background noises; nicely understated, Byrne lets the story tell itself.
2. Diamanda Galas reading "The Black Cat" -- smoking five packs a day does pay off for some people. . . . I almost wet my pants when I first heard her read the opening line of the story.
3. Dr. John reading "Berenice" -- not the typical Poe selection, very cool New Orleans accent and grovely voice.
4. Iggy Pop reading "The Tell-Tale Heart" -- classic story, great voice and interpretation.
5. Marianne Faithfull reading "Alone" -- again, great voice and creepy effects.

I'm leaving out Ken Nordine, Jeff Buckley, and Christopher Walken, all of whom turn in outstanding performances.

Weak points aside, this CD earns five stars for the total package. The cover art is very cool, the liner notes are very interesting and informative, the sound production is superb, and a vast majority of the renditions maximize Poe's eccentricities and creepy weirdness. The musical artists and actors put themselves somewhat at risk with these alternative performances, and their risks pay off big time! If you are a fan of Poe, this is a must-have CD set. If you are a fan of any of the performers, you likely won't be disappointed either. If you are just a fan of creative and alternative works, this is well worth a try. Everybody wins!

5 out of 5 stars Rythm, mesmerizing.......2002-02-11

What makes Poe's poetry so gripping? It is not the words themselves, but rather the rythm and beat they create. His poems are just begging to be read and these cd's do just that. A great piece of work.

4 out of 5 stars Reinvigorating a tormented soul.......2002-02-08

This is a mixed bag all right, the most egregious negatives being perpetual freak-fringe figure Ed Sanders' ostenisble "songs", and Abel Ferrara's too-jokey "Raven". But -oh- Dr. John's reading of "Berenice" is sheer magic. This underrated tale in the Poe canon, of incestuous necrophile dental obsession is totally buoyed by the swampy southern stylings of music and voice. It's perhaps the best recording of a Poe story ever, and I'm a huge fan of the Vincent Price/Basil Rathbone recordings of the 1960s. Ken Nordine could read a cereal box and make it sound good; I wish he had a longer selection on this CD-set. Marrianne Faithfull croaks out "Alone" with that special vocal quality that only years of smoke, whiskey and drug abuse can engender. It's all peaks and valleys - but what peaks!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Tribute to Poe.......2001-08-09

If you are a Poe fan, this is a must for your collection. The title, taken from a recent theory that Poe died of rabies contracted after a dog bite, is just the beginning of the creativity behind these CDs. Christopher Walken's reading of "The Raven" is second only to Vincent Price. Iggy Pop's rendition of "A Tell-Tale Heart" is chilling, to say the least, and is definitely worth getting the CDs for. I love listening to the stories and poems on a regular basis, and have a great time setting up the fog machine and blasting these CDs from my stereo on Halloween.

I also use this in my classroom every year. Poe, in general, is great for helping resistant students discover a love of literature and this CD is specifically responsible for creating readers out of some of my most unwilling students. While I am not too fond of the musical tracks on these CDs, my students enjoy them very much and they have inspired some of them to set Poe's work to their own music. All in all, I truly feel as if I've gotten my money's worth from these CD's and find them to be both enjoyable and useful.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely SP, But Is It Rabid Enough?.......2007-05-31

In many ways, this CD is a jewel. And I'm not talking about the case. It has a subtle touch in the way of sampling (something newcoming, reverse chronilogical-listening fans may have pined for after getting grips on Last Rights). Many of the songs function well on the dancefloor. Not to mention there is plenty of audible space for Ogre's lyrics to fill and take affect. But herein lies the question of this unworthy fan of only two years: Could it be that there's too much space?

Through much of my constant rotations of Puppy songs and CDs, I've found myself most attracted to the thickness of Key's and Goettel's common atmosphere between other works. Even the earlier scores, which are more easily accepted as quasi-minimalist due to the group's infancy, hold a brighter candle to a majority of Rabies' soft and tinny instrumental arrangements. Granted much of it is done well, but only in the sense of what it is. Which, I'm sorry to say, is quite empty and simple. Dare I say even a little boring?

"Rodent" sets the mood for what one should expect from a majority of the album. So let's figure it; Dull, delayed beat, soon accompanied by a very weak and constant synth that most 80's synth-pop wannabes would raise their noses to, an only slightly bolstering guitar riff provided by Al Jourgensen, exposed shrieks and groans from Ogre (which gains little discontent from me) and isolated samples scattered loosely across the track. It's not a strong arrangement, by any means, and only through the vocals and certain sound mashes (and I use the phrase "sound mashes" very, very lightly) can I find any measure of entertainment.

Some songs avoid this dry, loose behaivior, I'll admit. As tinny as the drumbeats are in "Two Time Grime," the sounds and vocals are blended wonderfully in themselves, however left to fill more than they conceivably can. Al's guitar riffs measure in mostly as a bland fruit filling more than an appropriate inclusion to the already dry electronics, perhaps only proficient enough in the song "Tin Omen." Attention can be (and usually is) paid to the album's highlight, "Worlock." The string synths coupled with a stronger, more bassy synth with Ogre's insightful and emotionally-charged vocals provide a sense of eagerness for darker atmospherics, sure (hence the video?), but it is still an altogether engaging and complete song. Look up live videos for it, one in particular is phenominal, even compared to the CD's recording.

So big fans don't raise your ears and snarl at me just yet. There's something to be enjoyed on this album, I'll not deny it. But amidst sub-par production, instrumentation and minor inconsistencies with vocals (Ogre's still got it in the long run), I feel perfectly justified to say that Rabies simply doesn't bite like other Puppy collections.

5 out of 5 stars Read the liner notes before you judge!!!!!!!.......2006-08-26

Skinny Puppy's singer Ogre brought Al Jourgenson along on this album. Al played drums on Tin Omen and guitar throughout the album.
This is not a wanna-be Ministry album, it's more of a collaberative work.

    5 out of 5 stars a lot of guitars???.......2006-06-18

Why do a lot of people trash this album simply for it containing hard guitars? Only three of the songs even have guitars in them, one of which is "Rodent" and it only has guitars in it for less than a minute towards the end of the song and a small four second sample of a "solo" (if you will)! Big whoop! Besides, all industrial bands use or have used guitars in their music and this is not the first Skinny Puppy album where guitars are used. Anyone remember a little song called "Dig It"???

Anyways... I've been listening to SP for quite a few years. Owning almost all their albums I still consider this my favorite album of theirs. Any long-time Puppy fan will appriciate songs like "Two Time Grime", "Rivers" and "Choralone" (not to mention the all too incredible "Worlock"). Some odd, different but satasfying Puppy work is done on "Hexonxonx" and "Tin Omen". "Sphan Dirge" is quite interesting, too.

Basically, if you like SP's Too Dark Park or Last Rights then there is no reason you shouldn't like this album either. Rabies is pretty much an experementation of what's to come on the two forementioned albums and it's done well in it's own right.

    4 out of 5 stars Rabies ~ Skinny Puppy.......2005-04-27

Rabies being their 1989 release is a very interesting album that sounds like a mix between SP, parts FLA and ministry. The FLA influence is in the use of the baseline. The ministry influence is due to the fact that Alien Jourgensen was a colaborator on this album. It still has a distinct SP sound thanks to the unique vocals by Ogre. The book-let is a mess and I have no idea what kind of message is supposed to be told with the numerous photos. It is supposed to say something, but I still have not figured out why. I love SP but I consider this to be amongst their weaker releases. I just to think it was the best, but I now like releases such as too dark park, and last rights better and the process. Still it is not a bad record by any means with amazing tracks such as rodent, warlock and many other very fine tracks that add to the sound of this well done album.

4 out of 5 stars "Rabies" will have you foaming at the mouth........2004-07-12

Ok so I'm not a fanatic, but of the "Skinny Puppy" albums I've heard, this is the best. Alot has been made of the production from "Al Jourgenson", but the influence is subtle, and this is no "Ministry". It's just good solid dark industrial. All here is good, but "Rodent", "Worlock", "Rivers", and of course "Tin Omen" are the cream. This album, "Too Dark Park", or the "Singles Collection" would all be a good start for newcomers. Now I wonder, why is this newer remastered version NOT currently available, but the old is?

5 out of 5 stars Better Choice For First Time Listeners.......2005-12-03

5 out of 5 stars This is my first Skinny Puppy Album..........2005-11-07

...and I have to say, it's unbelievably good.

There is not a single bad track on this album. I can't believe I've lived so long without hearing the brilliance of Skinny Puppy music. Although i have to say that this is not music for everyone. Only those who consider themselves fans of industrial music should buy this cd. If you don't consider yourself a fan of industrial music, then pay this album no mind, because if you do buy it, you'll write some ignorant bad review of it.

    Standout Tracks to me were:
"Fascist Jock Itch" - This is easily the most energetic song on the album. You can feel the energy surging into you as you listen to it.
"Worlock" - This song is just f***ing good. There is no way around that fact. Pleasant, yet at the same time extremely emotional. It also has a very deep message in its cryptic lyrics. This song now stands among my favorite songs of all time.

    4 out of 5 stars I've been bit........2005-07-12

        Album Description

Crushing 3-piece hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel. This album is as heavy as they come in Neurosis/Godflesh/Dillinger stylee. Monstrous bass-driven riffs that stick in your head, with enough originality to make em stand out from the pack, all with a top quality production make rabies caste definitely a name to watch for the future. From Earache Records.

        5 out of 5 stars Sick!.......2001-12-15

A very very good record. The songs are all different and sound killer. Let's put it this way, this record is a classic one. The rumors are that the band had split up, so it may be the last thing they ever put out, don't miss it!

        5 out of 5 stars stoner rock/sludge.......2001-12-11

The best sludge possible. Super massive. For all fans of heavy and twisted music.

        5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!.......2001-11-23

I find this CD to be the perfect mix of sludge, stoner rock, and even some grind elements in it... killer stuff!! BUY THIS CD if you're into bands like COALESCE, EYEHATEGOD, NEUROSIS, etc.

        4 out of 5 stars sludgey.......2001-11-11

This is the major label debut for Rabies Caste-and it is quie good. The music is pure sludgecore, but the vocals arnt snarling and growling-as you would expect from a sludge band-oh no,they are distorted which gives,at least a different (un)welcome(?) effect. The thing that caught my ear on this album is the snare drum,it is very noticible(more so than on other bands albums) and sounds fudgin awesome. The music is mid paced and only seems to go fast when the drummer goes crazy as a mofo.i would recommend this to anyone who wants to get into sludge, cos the best way of describing this is "accesible sludge".Good stuff.
