The star-crossed fracture of London's much-hyped, woefully short-lived Libertines initially yielded the mixed blessings of Pete Doherty's ongoing, tabloid-chronicled flirtation with self-annihilation and Down in Albion the brilliant debut of the singer's new band, Baby Shambles. But while the charms of this, the first effort by ex-Libertines guitarist/songwriter Carl Barat's own new crew, are considerably more straight-forward than Doherty's art-for-art's-sake conceits, they're no less energetically bracing or lyrically barbed. Indeed, it's Barat's efforts here that often seem to be carrying the Libertines' jangled punk-pop mantle forward via the infectious pop charms of the single "Bang Bang You're Dead" (a poison-pen kiss-off to ex-bandmate Doherty, replete with a playful New Orleans jazz-wake intro) or careening thrash-ups like "Gin & Milk" and "You F*cking Love It." Those extremes may outline the musical boundaries of DPT's debut, but it's what lies in between that's just as intriguing, whether it's the moody music hall-meets-dancehall charms of the downright Albion-esque "The Gentry Cove," the scathing broadside "Doctors & Dealers," "The Enemy's" schizoid-bop or the angular, ranting "If You Love a Woman," a song that distills the essence of three decades of energetic garage-punk angst into as many minutes. -- Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Better Than Babyshambles.......2007-04-17
Worth the Wait.......2007-01-27
Carl hadn't released much material since The Libertines' last album, so I had been rather eager (and impatient) to hear what his new band would sound like. The album is, unfortunately, short (under 40 minutes), but all of the songs are quality tracks, and that matters a great deal more than the length of the album. "Waterloo to Anywhere" is more satisfying than Babyshambles' "Down in Albion" in many respects; none of the tracks sound out of place or mediocre. The choice of radio songs from this album has been wise, since "Bang Bang, You're Dead", "Deadwood", and "Wondering" are all catchy and enjoyable.
The most immediate contrast that I noticed with DPT over The Libertines is that all of the instruments have major roles. The Libertines was all about Pete and Carl. Though Carl is the frontman, Didz, Anthony, and Gary are all equal contributers to the music! Gary was already a good drummer in The Libertines and has gotten even better in DPT. John Hassall, bassist in The Libertines, often took a backseat to Pete and Carl's impassioned performance, so he often just went along with whatever guitar riffs they were playing. Didz, on the other hand, is in the spotlight nearly as often as Carl! Anthony is also a capable guitarist, and both him and Didz provide backing vocals on several songs. Carl was often cast aside with Pete acting like the "lead" in The Libertines. Though they both shared the responsibilities of songwriting, singing, and composing, one might've guessed that Pete was the lead from watching The Libertines' interviews, which he tended to dominate.
Though I personally feel that Pete Doherty is an amazingly talented human being, so is Carl! DPT has been Carl's chance to finally get the recognition that he deserves. At the same time, Carl lets his band-mates share the stage as well; they aren't merely accessories to "the main act". As I have seen from interviews, and from meeting him personally, Carl has a very humble nature, despite being so musically adept and charming. Though I believe that The Libertines were one of the greatest bands of the 2000s, perhaps EVER, the band would've surely fallen apart eventually, even if Carl hadn't made the decision to remove Pete from the band. Pete's increasingly cavalier attitude and unfortunate drug habit put The Libertines in horrible jeopardy, and thus it was time for Carl and Pete to go on their separate ways.
Though the import is more expensive, I think it might be preferable to this American version, as it includes one rather good extra track: BURMA! The order of tracks is different on the American version as well, for whatever reason. A certain import version also includes a concert DVD with the album, but the quality of the recording isn't that good.

(Song titles edited by me)
The first single from the group's debut album is "Bang Bang You're Dead", a catchy Britpop track which sounds eerily like Herman's Hermits or even the Beatles at times. The lyrics are very simple and repetitive, which of course ensures that the song sticks in your head. If you don't believe me check the chorus which goes "Bang bang you're dead / Oh I'm so easily lead / Bang bang you're dead / Put all the rumours to bed / Bang bang you're dead"
Second single "Deadwood" is a very short track that leads off the album, a guitar driven track showcasing the talent of Carl Barat, formerly of The Libertines and now front man for Dirty Pretty Things on this debut album. The third single is intended to be the track "Wondering".
Other tracks worth mentioning are "Doctors and Dealers"; "The Gentry Cove" (which sounds like it should accompany a Monty Python movie) and "Gin & Milk", but unfortunately too many of the tracks sound alike to make this album outstanding.
This is the US version which is less than half the price of the UK version, but alas, it only has 11 tracks. (The last track B.U.R.M.A. didn't make it) However, given the price difference it's probably worth getting the US version.

My name is W.T. and I am an S.F.SORROW Addict.......2006-04-07
The CD comes with two SINGLES worth of great psychedelic music, and a wonderful booklet with all the lyrics, the connecting storyline, and a long essay about the backstory to the writing of the peice, and the history of the Band. After all, this CD was recorded at ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS, with the same people, and the same know-how, at the same time ABBEY ROAD STUDIO was recording PIPERS AT THE GATES OF DAWN, and MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. Let me say this: if you enjoy the Pink Floyd/Beatles type of "psychedelic sound", then you'll like the way the production is handled on SF SORROW. My only critism, is that the CD is MONO. Apparently, you can get the STEREO version, if you buy the 2CD set, with the CONTEMPORARY COMPLETE PREFORMANCE of the entire Opera, along with the narration voiced in. I read that the stereo version is plagued with sloppy stereo seperation. I have not found listening to this in MONO to diminish my appreciation of the work. In fact, as far as "DATED" psychedelic sounds, at least this album in MONO doesnt have the sound swirling between speakers, or any of those placement tricks, that DO sound dated, with todays audience. So, the effect of the heavy psychedelic sections, are more that of OVERLOAD, like the Velvet Underground with WHITE LITE, which doesnt rely on stereo games, for most of the songs. Rather than sitars, wah-wah guitar solos bouncing back and forth between the speakers, etc, you have the essence of the MUSIC, sparking the colors.
So, What does this sound like? Dont go by the earlier PRETTY THINGS sound, cos for one thing, they had changed a few major members of the group, before this LP. EMOTIONS, altho attempting psychedelia, was overdubbed against the bands wishes with tons of strings. And, the early R&B sound, isnt present on this album at all. Maybe because it DOESNT Sound just like anyone else, is why I am able to listen to this album over and over, and get so into it. THE PRETTY THINGS were never major movers and shakers in the UK psychedelic sound, but for some people, this ALBUM is up there with SGT PEPPER and PIPER AT THE GATE OF DAWN. So, I recommend just buying it. This opera might take a couple of times to get under your skin. I do think that there is enough here, to make it a worthwild investigation for anyone into the psychedelic sound, or perhaps the growth and developement of the Concept album- Rock opera.

Album Description
"One of the greatest R&B bands of all time--real wild!" -- Van Morrison "The Pretty Things always made the Stones look tame, and the time has definitely come for their renaissance." -- Dave Gilmour, Pink Floyd "The Pretties were great on stage--always far more rebellious than The Stones. You could like The Stones, but if you were a real rebel, it was always The Pretties." -- Gary Brooker, Procol HarumBalboa Island is legendary British rock group The Pretty Things' long-awaited eleventh studio album in a forty-three-year recording career! Their first CD release in over eight years, many already regard it as on par with the band's very greatest '60s and '70s recordings. From the stadium-sized rock of "All Light Up" to the raw acoustic guitar blues of "Feel Like Going Home" and the Beatles/Abbey Road style of "Dearly Beloved," The Pretty Things have crafted a dark album--brooding, powerful, mysterious, and edgy. These thirteen new songs--mostly originals, but also including an acoustic cover of early Bob Dylan song "The Ballad of Hollis Brown"--have a rawness, intensity, depth, and passion unmatched by any of the band's contemporaries: the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, or The Who. None of the class of '64 has enough gas left in the tank to make an album like this! Founded in 1964 by lead vocalist Phil May and lead guitarist Dick Taylor--who was the Rolling Stones' original bass guitarist prior to starting The Pretty Things--the band has always followed its own fiercely independent path. Although the huge international breakthrough of the Rolling Stones or The Who has eluded the group, the members' uncompromising musical integrity has given them a cult following around the world.

Album Description
An equal love for rock 'n' roll and rhythm & blues is what guided The Pretty Things in 1963 when they first formed. Guitarist Dick Taylor, previously a member of Little Boy Blue & The Blue Boys with pals Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, met Phil May at art school and quickly joined forces. They recruited the rest of the original Things over the next year and went on to sign a record deal with Fontana. While U.S. audiences didn't embrace these British invaders, European audiences did. In fact, it was David Bowie who first enlightened America about the Pretty Things phenomenon with covers of both "Rosalyn" and "Don't Bring Me Down" in 1973. Another milestone for the band was 1968's S. F. Sorrow. The first rock opera was a huge influence for Pete Townshend, who went on to create Tommy a year later.Long overdue, Come See Me: The Very Best Of The Pretty Things is the band's first comprehensive best-of package in the U.S. It focuses on the band's initial decade, starting with a heavily R&B-influenced garage sound, passing through their late-'60s conceptual operetta and into psychedelia and standard classic '70s rock. Its 25 tracks include the hits "Don't Bring Me Down," "Defecting Grey" and "Honey, I Need." The Pretties reunited a few years back to re-record their operetta and continue to record and tour sporadically.
This is The Pretty Things' first comprehensive "Best-of," packed with 25 tracks.
The contemporary garage rock movement, led by The White Stripes, The Vines, The Strokes...has brought renewed interest to The Pretty Things, one of the pioneering groups of the genre.
Sixties garage rock's popularity is evidenced by the strong sales of Rhino's Nuggets boxed sets (which featured The Pretty Things).
The Pretty Things' Parachutes was Rolling Stone magazine's 1970 Album of the Year.

The Pretty Things - A Rock 'n' Roll Jewel.......2004-07-24
uglier and more wicked than mick and stones.......2004-06-20
mick is pretty compared to phil may and company.
their music started to sound a bit like the stones , at the beginning; but why not? they were both plagiarizing from bo diddley, chuck berry and all the great black rnb premiers.
however, as soon as you reach "come see me" (the title track , track 11) you have to concede the "wicked-est" bass in rock history has to be from this tune. even the mighty "donald" duck dunn's bass would sound "quacky" (lol) compared to this bad-arse mother of all bass sound.
venture further and pretty things abruptedly sounds pretty on track 15,
making you think someone switched albums... barclay james harvest??? colin blunstone with argent???
but no, this is still pretty thing, and really ...
sounding quite pretty... um, pretty impressive. more than ever before, this is really pretty things living up to their monicker.
can a band so wicked and ugly , span the other extreme of the spectrum to sound pretty. well, ""the sun", "death of a socialite",etc... prove that this group is more than just a bunch of "ugly faces" making "ugly noise". hang on tight, mate ... as track 17 "defecting grey" takes you on a magic carpet ride with a little traffic-ky "paper sun" , then the byrds "8 miles high" and you hear everything from the move, who,etc... and awaaaaayyyyy youuuuu goooooo...
this album keeps getting better as you float along with the sonic-evolution of the pretty things. surprise, surprise, ... and even more surprise; it's really quite nice. excellent anthology of a group that should have been credited for their talent alongside who, stones and move.
as always, those who (excuse the pun) came first, never got the credit. this time, pretty things should be something worth listening... 37 years after. it's amazing, when you come to think of it, the members of the garage bands of today were not even fetuses when the tunes on this album first saw light.
More than their greatest hits.......2004-04-29
Absolutely essential British Invasion/garage rock!.......2004-04-28
If you're a fan of British Invasion rock or garage rock of any era, you'll love the Pretty Things.

What to listen to..To give you that extra Morning Kick!(?)
Well, I know it's different for everybody, but for me it is this album by The Pretty Things.
Now, this is an absolute treat to listen to. I don't know a whole lot about the history of The Pretty Things, since I just started listening to them about a couple months ago, an Amazon friend of mine mentioned them to me.
I do know that The Pretty Things were more under-rated than the 'Big' names in the '60s - The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys & The Beatles, even The Animals seem to be heard of more. Although it's kind of sad, since to me, this Band is honestly a lot better! They just sound More Wild and exciting especially with this Ecstatic, R&B, Bluesy type of Sound.
This s/t album was first released in 1965, and it was The Pretty Things first release.
This is my third Pretty Things album, and although I do love "Parachute" and "S.F. Sorrow" - I have been playing this one a lot more recently, actually every morning for the last three weeks or so. Yes, this is My Morning Wake-Up Call!
I never have had more fun with a Blues - Rock type of album before!
I have heard the song "Roadrunner" before, I never knew it was by The Pretty Things though- until I got this album that is.
Other Favorites of mine are, "Big City" - "Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" -"She's Fine She's Mine" - "Don't Lie to Me" - "Pretty Thing"- "Rosalyn" (hit)- "Big Boss Man" & "Don't Bring Me Down"
-Of course for me every song is a Winner!
It is too bad, they aren't mentioned as frequently as all those other Bands that helped shape what Rock Music sounds like for future generations.
- A pure & fresh sounding Passion that seems to be missed in the Rock world these days.

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04
a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05
But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).
And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.
Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.
I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been
