5 out of 5 stars this is it.......2005-05-06

this is clearly the best best james cd to be released. i cant believe some boneheads rate seven or millionaires higher.
3 words for those people "absolute bone heads"

this sits along side laid as james' best work.
get this cd and in the famous words of strasky and hutch
" do it " 5 chunky gold stars for me.

5 out of 5 stars a musical masterpiece.......2004-07-13

if you enjoy music from real musicians than please to meet you by james is a breath of fresh air from all the pop puppetry which saturates our radios and shelves at music stores. a must have for people who appreciate true musicians. the album is a complete contrast of songs from start to finish, soft ballads to light rock.. this cd is a knockout.. 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite album.......2004-01-31

I have been a long time James fan. Before this album I would have said Seven was their best. But after listening to this album for a long time, this on is definitely their best. Not only is it my fav James album, its my fav album PERIOD. The album closes with Alaskan Pipeline which has permanently latched onto me and will not let go. Do yourself a favor and buy this album..

4 out of 5 stars Not Their Best, But Still Quite Good (Swan Song, perhaps?).......2003-06-10

Sadly, this may be the last studio effort from the great English band JAMES. If it isn't, then it is most likely the last to feature their charismatic frontman, Tim Booth. Following the release of this album. Booth announced he was leaving the band in December of 2001.
JAMES seemed to really hit their stride with a string of singles in the early to mid 1990's. Though they could never maintain the momentum, they continued making excellent music (check out their amazing 1999 release, "Millionaires.")
PLEASED TO MEET YOU finds the band as experimental and groundbreaking as ever. This album has a true sense of the band looking forward, to the future, to, ironically, the bands future.
The lead off track, SPACE, is text book JAMES: spooky, bizarre, at times hilarious, and downright catchy. The lines "you've gotta get over yourself" will reverberate in your head for quite some time.
Another real stand out is the song GETTING AWAY WITH IT, a dark, twisted anthem with more catchy tunes and cutting lyrics.
THE SHINING and GIVE IT AWAY are two of my other favorites.
So, why then, am I only giving this 4 stars and not 5 if its so damn good? Well, while I admire the sonics and the new direction the band seemed to be going in with disc, the songs, with the exception of the four I have mentioned, simply aren't as consistently strong as the ones on LAID, WHIPLASH, or MILLIONAIRES are.
Still, this disc is very good and proves, yet again, why JAMES are/were one of the most talented and underappreciated bands out there.

4 out of 5 stars It's JAMES!.......2002-10-18

This CD turned out to be the last studio effort by Tim Booth w/ the rest of the band named James. ...This means for any James fan out there, this album and the subsequent live album "Getting Away With It...Live" are musts to own, for they mark an end of an era of 20 years of Tim Booth as lead singer.

Musically, this album is very good. The bass play in "English Beefcake" is very Cure-esque with long bass notes driving the rhythm.

"Junkie" reminds me of The Church with it's sublime feel and social commentary.

The title track "Pleased to Meet You" starts slow and hypnotizing, but don't be fooled! Your speakers better be able to handle the guitar at 3:40 into the song! It'll wake you up on a long drive, that's for sure.

"Senorita" is an upbeat song with a strong chorus and verse that explores the lines of love/lust/worship. "I'm addicted to you/I hope we're going to pull through/I'm addicted to you/You're my love, my Senorita/I'm addicted to you/you're the god that makes me stronger/"

On "Falling Down" and "Fine", one hears James experimenting w/ basic dance rhythms that don't dominate, but rather enhance the "mellow" of the album.

All in all this is a solid album. Nothing to get worked up about in a negative sense, except that it almost makes one downright sorrowful for passing of the Booth era of James.

With alarming regularity, formerly spry English pop bands have turned somber over the past year in their quest for historical significance. Blur, Oasis, and the Charlatans all released albums that not only squashed their once youthful resilience, but left us with nothing more than gangs of stodgy band members in parkas moaning about their sad lives. As if one Bush weren't already enough. Sleeper, meanwhile, always on the losing side of the credibility battle, turned so sour they split before their third album even had a chance to break in America. Just as well that Pleased to Meet You arrives on our shores belatedly. This year's model lacks the urgency and optimism of the group's last outing, The It Girl, instead serving up a steady progression of cumbersome melodies ("She's a Good Girl") and droning choruses ("Motorway Man"). While certain songs benefit from a little well-suited sophistication ("Breathe" and "Nothing Is Changing"), the rest of the material generally withers under the low spark of singer Louise Wener's toneless delivery. However, this album still isn't as tragic as hearing Supergrass go from "Alright" to "Sometimes I Make You Sad." Indeed. --Aidin Virazi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Elegy for a lost era........1999-10-17

Seize the opportunity; this is too good an album to complaisantly watch sink into obscurity. Sleeper's first album was called Smart, and that pretty much sums up their ethic; if you're smart, you don't need a lot of fancy musical ornamentation, zithers and Mellotrons, just a guitar and a breathy voice expressive of worldly disaffection. Pleased to Meet You, in particular, is one of the most satisfying albums I've ever heard because of the way the saucy lead singer with a yawn-inducing frankness about sex -- wouldn't a little frigidity be more original these days? -- suddenly becomes very convincingly philosophical, and yet more tuneful than ever.

I don't know if Sleeper really have disintegrated or not, but I sure hope so. This is the perfect elegy for them, and for the glorious British music scene of the mid-90's ( no I'm not being sarcastic; go listen to your Alanis and leave me alone. )

5 out of 5 stars a Brit-pop masterpiece!.......1999-01-07

As a huge sleeper fan,I anxiously awaited the follow up to their brilliant album "The It Girl."When I read that the new album was a flop and was not even being released in the U.S.,I was determined to buy the record (as Import) and decide for myself. After all ,most rock critics are total losers and love to slag this band for whatever reason. When the record arrived I put it on and within about 5 seconds of the opening track "Please,Please,Please"I knew my faith in the band was well placed.I feel this is the best Sleeper record to date.Fans of bands like Blur and Elastica would probably like this.Standout tracks "Traffic Accident","Rollercoaster"and "Firecracker" are Sleeper at their absolute best.

5 out of 5 stars Their best effort yet!.......1998-10-20

Just when I thought SMART couldn't be beat, THE IT GIRL was released. An indelibly grand album, it posed a threat to Sleeper. Would they snap under the weight? Nope. PLEASED TO MEET YOU not only exceeds both previous albums, it smooshes them into the ground. The sparse keyboard-driven "Motorway Man" resonates long after it's over, "You Got Me" boasts an unbeatable "ooh-ooh-ooh" chorus, "Rollercoaster" has a snappy moog that sounds like it was lifted from a Stereolab record and the closing rave-up "Traffic Accident" ponders on about someone "in a white hall room who's popping prostitutes". Lyrically and musically, PLEASED TO MEET YOU proves that the British Press are idiots for slagging this brilliant band. I hope this record is released in America soon. It's been out in Britain for a year now.

4 out of 5 stars A very good album.......1998-10-10

Contrary to information listed above, Sleeper is indeed together and have not split up. Although there's not a smash like "Statuesque" from 'The It Girl' or "Inbetweener" from 'Smart', it's still a great album. Standouts include "Because of You", "You Got Me", and "Rollercoaster".

4 out of 5 stars Slowburning Beauty - A Return to Form.......2001-10-19

Years ago, after hearing - I mean really hearing - 'Laid', it became one of those timeless fantastic albums that you couldn't get tired of. The multi-layered slow builders - one instument carefully threaded on top of another - sometimes subtle, sometimes overt - but each adding to the final adrenalin rushing creshendo. Then suddenly it stops - all to start again in the next song. Just brilliant!

Then a couple of dodgy albums - 'Millionaires' being particularly weak. Ephemeral pulp - perhaps a wink at the mainstream in mind, but very misguided. Deep waters just aren't any good at pulp. Witness Bono or Ed Kowalcsyk's miserable forays into MTV-ville.

So now - 'Pleased to Meet You' landed on my table without much excitement. Halfway through 'Space' I was interested again - a couple of songs later I remembered why I was such a huge James fan. The Jameses have remembered what is uniquely theirs - the simple lyrical, incremental, subtle pop song. Its incredible how good the three chord wonder can sound in their hands.

Outstanding tracks are:

Space - long ethereal build up to a classic James song. Goes forward adding slowly to the wall of sound until the abrupt end five minutes later. An object lesson in not rushing the climax. This is what James are all about.

English Beefcake - Driven by a simple but beautiful bass line. Haunting guitar and keyboard melody. Great lyrics. A somewhat strange outro leaves you uncertain if you've moved onto the next song or not. Pity about the WhoaHo stuff at the end.... .

Junkie - Up front miked accoustic guitar (think Everlast - Whitey Sings the Blues). Unhurried shuffling drums. Sounds like Tim's singing with a peg on his nose but he's got issues worth crooning about.

Pleased to Meet You - Probably the darkest track on the album and the most memorable for it. Starting with a simple repetitive guitar refrain with a spacey keyboard background. Enter the brushed snare - eerie chorus line - pregnant scary bass bridge - wham! hit the distort button. Needs to be played loud and often.

Alaskan Pipeline - Beautiful filmic endpiece. 'You mother me, I son you'. Say no more.

Genius. Although Britney Spears probably couldn't give a hoot - there is still good music being made and selling too!

For their finale as the band James, this album is surprisingly weak. Although all bands should evolve with the times, James has evolved into something totally forgettable. Unlike Whiplash and Laid, this album lacks any lyrical wizardry that defines James. It seems that Tim Booth is trying too hard to make these songs sound profound. Instead they come off as just that: loosely strung together sound-scapes and forced phrases. If you are looking for background music, I'd recommend Pleased To Meet You. If you are looking for James, stop your record collection at Millionaires.

3 out of 5 stars why such a brutal split ???.......2002-10-06

for me sleeper is a band who belong to history.
the beginning of nineties gave us wonderful great pop rock british bands....d'ya know what i mean....
of course this is the last album of this band but i think this one deserves your attention and recognition.
you will not regret it...
i believe this is not a masterpiece but pleased to meet you sounds good ....and in my opinion it's so much better than most of british bands now

5 out of 5 stars Please Please Please Check This Album Out.......2001-07-04

How come this is an unpopular album??? I found this album to be a grand follow up to 'The It Girl'. It's obviously more mature but the style is there and so is the quality of songs.

Personally, 'Smart' didn't do a lot for me. 'The it Girl' is better than that album because they get more creative with melodies and their songs become more interesting. If you agree with me, then I am sure you will love 'Pleased To Meet You'. It's seriously worth it for 'Please Please Please, You Got Me, Breathe, not to mention the two wonderful singles, SAGG and RM.

It's a damn shame that these guys aren't around anymore, but this album is a marvelous ending to a wonderful band.

5 out of 5 stars intelligent, catchy, diverse songs.......1999-01-02

Definately one the the best cd's that i own. Louise Wener has a way of phrasing words that make each sentence beautiful. Along with intelligent lyrics, the music is very catchy and full. Since it was the last album they made as Sleeper, all I have to say is what a way to make an exit!
