Product Description
Off the Record offers an amazingly fresh and simple alternative--one that proves to be a definitive step in presenting these truly classic sides. By special arrangement with Archeophone Records, Off the Record is proud to present all 37 issued titles by the Oliver band, newly transferred from the best available original sources, issued on two compact discs. Engineer and master sound recording restoration specialist Doug Benson--known for his definitive work on "The Complete Hit of the Week" on Archeophone Records--and David Sager--jazz historian and trombonist--have searched far and wide to gain access to the cleanest copies of all the Oliver discs, including the unique copy of "Zulus Ball" and "Working Man Blues." Using a meticulous musical ear, a wide variety of styli and the subtlest application of digital technology, Benson, perhaps for the first time, has revealed the natural ambience of these discs. Unprecedented Detail and Clarity: The Oliver ensemble has never been heard to better advantage. Passages long accepted as muddy and indistinct pour forth with unprecedented clarity. Even the introduction of the ultra-rare "Zulus Ball," often lamented for its poor condition, shines through crystal clear! Straight off the discs with as little processing as possible: There is no better way to bring these old discs to life than with the right stylus, a sensitive ear, and careful application of non-invasive processing. Whereas many reissues are marred by over-processing, resulting in muffled sound and/or digital artifacts, Off the Record has judiciously applied just enough non-invasive technique in order to remove ticks, pops, harsh resonances and other unwelcome noise--leaving the music to speak for itself. Expertly Speed Corrected: Just because we call them "78s" doesn't mean that they really are. Sound recordings from the early days of sound recording rarely spin at exactly 78 rpm. Back in those days there was no standardization regarding speed; often discs ran aCustomer Reviews:
A Must Have for any Jazz Collection.......2007-07-23
This set tops a them ALL sonically. The first two cuts amazed me. Some cuts suffer a bit, but I would assume that is due to the condition of available source material. After hearing so many so so and dreadful transfers in thew past, these are an ear opener. In places, Oliver & Armstrong's cornets fairly jump right out out of the speakers.
The accompanying booklet is extensive, with some extremely rare photos.
A must-have if you are serious about knowing jazz history.
Renovating An Old Master.......2007-07-15
If you're coming new to Oliver, don't be misled into thinking that these recordings are raucous examples of a primitive music form. As the perceptive liner notes state (and these octogenerian recordings underline) "Oliver's band was first and foremost a dance band, as were most jazz bands of the day".
If you're already committed, you'll find the effect of hearing these recordings anew is analogous to that of viewing an Old Master after the accumulated dirt of the centuries (which we took for granted as part of the picture) has been removed and the original colours stand revealed in all their glory.

Outstanding Transfer: Best So Far!.......2006-12-23
Irregardless, I like hearing King Oliver's sound. It's just great to listen to. I would also highly recommend this particular King Oliver CD, to other reviewers who are not sure just which copy to purchase. I remember hearing a lot of great talk about the Milestone issue [which I have] and this one definetly puts it to shame. I really did not realize how different the sound quality was on the Milestone issue, but after listening to this CD, WOW, what a difference! This is the one to purchase [for now anyway].
Some of the sounds on this particular recording are to name just a few: JUST GONE, CANAL STREET BLUES, MANDY LEE BLUES, CHIMES BLUES, WEATHER BIRD RAG, DIPPER MOUTH BLUES, FROGGIE MOORE, SNAKE RAG [a great one] SWEET LOVIN' MAN, HIGH SOCIETY RAG, SOBBIN' BLUES, WHERE DID YOU STAY LAST NIGHT, DIPPER MOUTH BLUES, JAZZIN' BABIES BLUES, ALLIGATOR HOP, and a lot of other great, great sounds. There are 37 tracks in all, and once again, I believe that these are the BEST King Oliver sounds that I have ever heard on CD. I highly recommend this particular CD to those who like the jazz sounds of the 1920s. My favorite era of jazz runs from about 1923, to the early 1930s. Not that the later periods are not good, I just like the sound of jazz during this particular era.

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

Joining up once again with the boys at the Backroom, the team that brought you 2001's critically acclaimed "Color Of Silence," Tiffany has continued her passion and has at long last recorded the consummate Club/Dance project her fans have so eagerly awaited. This collection of eleven house oriented tracks includes a fresh take on her smash hit "I Think We're Alone Now" and a remix by the up and coming dance duo "Second Sun." Finding her stride on this energetic and brilliantly crafted album, Tiffany's unique and mesmerizing voice is reminiscent of Aretha and Anastacia at their soulful best, and will leave you breathless.Customer Reviews:
Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16
"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.
The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.
Highlights: Be With U Tonite, Ride It, Na Na Na
Low Points: Kama Sutra, I Think We're Alone Now (remix)

It's been three years since Laundry Service transformed Shakira into an international rock diva, and we're still waiting for the official follow-up. As she toils away on her next studio album (due later this year), the Colombian temptress has kept fans distracted with a Washed and Dried special edition of her English-language breakthrough and a Grandes Exitos collection of her Spanish hits. Now comes Live & Off the Record, a lush CD/DVD package chronicling Shakira's 2003 Tour of the Mongoose. It's a must-have for Shakira fans and features her second live CD effort (following 2000's stellar MTV Unplugged). The real treat, though, is the DVD, which was filmed at a tour stop in the Netherlands. Shakira tears through tracks such as "Si Te Vas," "Inevitable," "Rules," and "Ready For the Good Times" with equal parts sensuality and animalistic ferocity. Her stage presence is positively electric. The accompanying documentary is also a revelation, capturing Shakira at her most honest and vulnerable. Highlights include the singer's bout with tendonitis (brought on by belly-dancing), an early-morning mariachi serenade from her boyfriend on Valentine's Day, and a backstage visit from novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Fans' appetites should be whetted--for a little while. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

The Walkmen's third album steers their ever challenging sonic textures into greener, more expansive landscapes and finds the fresh air there downright invigorating. A focused, more guitar-centric approach is notable throughout, with textures that span the jangly invitation of the Mexicali horn-spiced opener "Louisiana" to the droning, hypnotic buzz of "Good For You's Good For Me" and churning rhythms of "Boston"; reminders that the band's frequent nods to Joy Division are considerably more than mere affectation. Set against those textures, the nervous "Tenley Town" comes off as a surprisingly straightforward shot of the band's thrashy, garage-rooted past. Frontman Hamilton Leithauser frequently invokes a vocal persona that suggests Dylan on too much coffee and not enough sleep throughout. Yet he's limber enough to coax it into the supple, Caribbean-flavored lounge croon of "Brandy Alexander" and the brooding edge of "This Job Is Killing Me" before bringing the album full circle on a surprisingly tender cover of Quentin Stoltzfus's "Another One Goes By" that somehow evokes Nashville Skyline by way of Manchester '78. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
The Walkmen have been solidifying their position as one of the most important bands in the alternative music community with their previous releases, "Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone" and "Bows And Arrows". Extensive touring, media prominence, critical acclaim, national modern rock radio airplay, and TV performances have helped establish the band in the music community. "A Hundred Miles Off" is their most solid effort yet. "Dylan meets Joy Division" - Uncut. "The dramatic epic sweep, the urgent, chiming guitars, the upright snap of the drums - it's all here" - Bust.Customer Reviews:

A step back..........2006-08-31
The first two albums (which have been in my car's CD changer for one and a half years straight) have these great subtle elements that the new album is missing. Aside from songwriting elements, a think a few of the songs are ruined by this new screaming thing Hamilton's doing. The drumming on the earlier albums reminded me a bit of the stuff from the Bad Plus, but all that seems to have mellowed out on the new album.
On the other hand, it's still better than most other stuff out there.
Hundred Miles On.......2006-08-23
I can't even explain why I like this band so much, I've been listening to them for years and yet I can hardly name any of their songs. I simply listen to the entire albums over and over again like one giant song. That's a rare band!
Lou-WEEZ-e-ana opens a Hundred Miles Off and the strumming game is afoot. You just can't get more esoteric than that. Just when the incredibly spot-on drumming wins you over, suddenly it sounds as if Minor Threat is reborn with Tenley Town. Other songs sprinkled amidst the album remind one of a Tarantino soundtrack, or a '70s department store replete with popcorn smells in the air...you decide.
Perhaps this album is less accessible by the mainstream, especially compared to Bows and Arrows. We'll see. No matter, it's a keeper.
My time was wasted listening to this so that you don't have to.......2006-07-29

"Howdy, howdy folks. We're glad to be back for another show here. As we do the numbers now, we're gonna call each fellow's name out so we can get right along with the show." And what a show. Bluegrass has always been a live-performance genre, on stage or in the studio, and Bill Monroe never sounded better on stage than during these heady years of the folk revival. He had something to share and to prove to his new audience, and he wouldn't meet them halfway, choosing instead his grittiest traditional material and singing, especially in the late '50s, with full, high yodel and wail. His voice mellowed into the '60s, but his band, including many of the best bluegrass pickers ever (Bill Keith, Peter Rowan, Richard Greene, and Bobby Hicks for starters), never gave quarter. To understand Bill Monroe and his various ensembles, one needs to hear his stage brilliance, and there's no better place to start than with these warm, clear live recordings. --Roy KastenAlbum Description
Previously unreleased recordings from the 1950s and '60s present Monroe concert performances, jam sessions, and festival workshops of Bill with the Bluegrass Boys and his brothers Charlie and Birch. This 75-minute collection captures Monroe with Peter Rowan, Bill Keith, Tex Logan, Bobby Hicks, Del McCoury, Hazel Dickens, Roland White, and many, many others. Includes rare photos and extensive notes by Ralph Rinzler. "...culled from both concerts and picking parties, [this recording] reveals what a holy terror [Monroe] was in front of an audience--even of friends, at 4:45 a.m." -- NewsweekCustomer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-03-10
What is found on this disc are two phases of Bill's career. The first is the mid to late 50's when rock n roll was gaining popularity and country artists were plugging in to keep pace. Bill, ever the purist to what he'd created and being his typical hard headed self, refused to put any band on the road that carried an electirc instrument. It was during this era that gigs were hard to come by for "hillbilly" music. That doesn't in any way take awy from these perfomances however. Bill and crew were at the top of thier respective game and the delivery is completely flawless. Ed Mayfield is the guitarist and lead singer on several of these cuts. The toure de force he turns in on Blue Yodel # 5 alone is jaw dropping. Also included is a guest spot with Don Reno playing banjo on Bluegrass Stomp, with Bill providing some of the spookiest, blusiest playing ever to be heard.
The second phase is equally impressive featuring the likes of Richard Greene, Pete Rowan, Bill Kieth (introduced as Brad because Monroe was to be the only Bill on stage) and Tex Logan. It was at this time that Ralph Rinzler had begun managing Monroe's career and a resulting rennisance was underway, which in no small way helped Bill attract younger, more progressive pickers. The most amazing cut from this period would have to be "Wayfaring Stranger" with a completely impromtu instrumental call-and-answer on Bill's break.
This disc, along with the Doc Watson duet (also on Smithsonian Folkway) and the Bear Family box sets of Monroe's Decca recordings are about all a bluegrass fan will ever need for a complete catalog of The Father of Bluegrass' genius.

A 45-minute trip to bluegrass heaven, these 17 songs combine the talents of two unparalleled musical forces: Bill Monroe, the inventor of bluegrass, master of the mandolin, and owner of a bone-chilling, mountain tenor voice; and Doc Watson, the flatpicking genius with a soulful, mellow vocal tone. Much of the material stems from the legendary Monroe Brothers recordings. Their sublime harmonies carry plaintive ballads including "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul" and "Banks of the Ohio," and uptempo numbers such as "You Won't Be Satisfied That Way." The roaring fiddle tunes are simply mind-blowing: "Soldier's Joy," "East Tennessee Blues," and "Fire on the Mountain" all rank as virtuosic masterpieces. If it's possible, the pairing exceeds all expectations. --Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description

One of the top, yet most underrated albums of all time.......2005-07-19
If you like safe, mainstream or commercial hard rock, this will probably not work for you. But if you like genuine music, guts, playmanship and a band with an attitude, then The Mighty Sweet will satisfy you like none other.
This album shows one of the most influential rock bands at its productive and musical peak. Although this album is often overlooked, even by Sweet fans, it shows impressive musical creativity and power. Off the Record has it all: pure rock, riffs, melody, musical dexterity, moodiness, funk, excellent arrangements and even blatant plagiarism ("Windy City" vs. Deep Purple's Woman from Tokyo). Anyway, you are unlikely to find better vocals from any other group from the '70s (even mainstream Queen, which in fact lured former Sweet engineer Mack to their rank). Just listen to songs like "Lost Angels", "Live for Today" and "She Gimme Lovin'" and you'll be convinced nobody has ever played hard rock music like that, even if many wannabes have tried to copy their style. This album also has very rare gems like "Laura Lee" and "Midnight to Daylight", even a very upbeat song in "Fever of Love". Even "Funk it Up" rocks!
The Sweet were highly accomplished musicians and this is proof of a band that really produced some of the best rock music of all time.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS.......2005-02-26
"In Trousers" in the 80's. i liked them alot. but revisiting them now i'm really impressed with "In Trousers" . The lyrics are inventive and fun and the music is great! I'D SEE a show like this over "les miz saigon of the opera" any day.
THIS ALBUM IS MUSICALLY/ LYRICALLY unique!.......2002-09-23
these actors are wonderful as well..all of them...
They performed this recording like a show, even more so..
The songs are pretty much all brilliant, unique, and captivating. These are well made songs,....
Finn was well deserving of the Hutinson Fellowship he received for musical composition.
He will go alongside Sondheim as one of the all time greats...
So much fun, and so moving.......2002-04-30
