Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Dan & Liz are God's favorite Fun Couple.......2004-11-28
That's the subtext of this record. In case you didn't know. This record was motivated by a nostalgia for Heaven. And what it evokes is a nostalgia for Heaven. (As if I'm not already overburdened enough with that emotion courtesy of Karla's cuddle-scrumptiousness.)
THE BEGINNING OF BEAUTY.......2003-05-24
simple and perfect.......2001-05-05
"Little Things" starts with an incredibly simple yet perfect guitar line, and as with most Ida songs, builds and builds until your heart feels like it's going to burst. Dan and Liz's voices are perfect, alone or in harmony, and I can't imagine living without them (I mean that as the highest possible compliment, rather than in a creepy stalker sense).
"Back Burner" is another wonderful song, with the lyric "like Caliban, you've seen it all without language to use" making a nice arc between Ida and one of my great literature loves, "The Tempest." "Tellings" is a gorgeous, more uptempo song, and "Thank You" pretty much drags out all the pain (e.g. "thank you for giving me nothing"). There is a different version of this available on a 7", without the strings and acoustic guitar.
"When I Was Now" is as close to traditional folk as they get on this album, but Ida maintains a very unique sound thoroughout...balancing bleak raw emotion with moments of exquisite beauty. This is the record that comes to mind when asking Nick Hornby's question "do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?" It isn't all a downer, though. It is often quite the opposite.
If you like Ida, I'd urge you to seek out the song "Ain't No Lie" that was released as a His Name Is Alive song on the 4AD "Anakin" compilation - with Dan and Liz on vocals and (what I assume is) a Warn DeFever acoustic guitar backing. The split 7" they did with Secret Stars also has one of my favorite songs by Ida. Even though that's a song that brought me to tears the first time I heard it (no mean feat, that) the beauty of Ida lies in the contrast between these sublime songs of love and loss followed by wacky Prince covers. How often can you find a combination that perfect? Look for the latter on an Insound Tour Support CD and the "Poor Dumb Bird" 7".

Customer Reviews:
Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20
The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.
Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.
Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.
Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01
So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!
Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27
JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.
The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.
