2 out of 5 stars AAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!.......2006-12-17

What happened to this band? I know the great Terry Kath passed and all, but was going disco the best way to honor his memory?

Man, I'm just picturing one of my favorite bands all wearing leisure suits with their shirts open revealing mucho bling. We miss you Terry...but the band misses you more!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chicago's Third Era - They Show Up Strong.......2006-06-19

I want to respectfully disagree with many of the reviewers here. Yes, we miss Terry Kath - he can never be replaced, but there are a number of things about this album that make it a 5-star.

* Donnie Dacus - give the guy credit. He took on the most difficult challenge in rock history, and delivered. I appreciate that he did not try to mimic Terry. He played the music his way, and in so doing gave Chicago a different flavor. I commend him and the band for letting him be himself (on stage, however, this was not such a positive thing!). From the opening moments of Alive Again, it is clear this will still be a band with a guitarist. Donnie's opening licks, and closing solo on Run Away (from Chicago 13) properly bookend his solid contributions to this middle, transitionary era in the band.

2. Danny keeps his streak going. I have surmised that Danny Seraphine took on something of a creative leadership role at this time. More than ever, his drums seem to sing on this album.

3. Fun. Despite the tragedy of losing Terry, the boys are still having fun. Take off your counter-culture/underground hats, sit back and enjoy!

4. Listenable. This is the first album in Chicago's history, that you can play for your girlfriend, that before was indifferent to them. If I knew that someone didn't like Chicago, I would make sure this was the first album they heard, even before the Foster albums.

5. It delivers the key elements of a good Chicago album. It would be nice to hear a trombone or trumpet solo - but Walt's flute on Hot Streets makes up for that.

6. Peter's liberation is evident. You can hear his exuberance at finding his chops and you get the sense that a solo career is around the corner. This is not good in every way - but the guy knows how to write hits with hooks. (The thing about Cetera songs, is, you feel like you have heard them before - which to me is a great skill and talent).

So, how is this the beginning of a new Chicago era? There are the obvious reasons: Kath and Guercio are gone. The band has more control over production, Donnie Dacus enters. They are recording in Miami, not Caribou. It is not a disco album, but it is informed by disco trends. To me this is not a sellout. It shows that they can adapt and are curious about what they can do with any style of music. But please - Alive Again is not a disco song. 120 beats per minute are not an important element.

The album cover was unwise - they look kinda goofy, when we needed them to look more serious and "cool". Interesting observation is that Peter and Danny, the next of the originals to leave, are embracing on the cover.

Chicago proves that they are more than their members. Chicago is a sound, an idea, a concept, that can outlive tragedy and personnel changes. For this reason, and the fact that I can play it for people that don't think they like Chicago, I give it 5-stars. Yes - buy this album!

3 out of 5 stars Their 1st post-kath release.......2006-05-07

This is a solid record, for band that almost broke-up and lost their founding guitarts.
If the read the booklet on their follow-up , 13, they say that "street player" was their only experimentation with disco. I'm going to have to disagree. "alive agian" and "hot streets" and "no tell lover" are disco songs.
There are 6 really good tracks "alive agian" "the greatest love on earth", "take a chance", "gone, long, gone", "love was new" and "no tell lover".
Donnie Darcus is no terry kath but he does a pretty decent job.
1. Alive Again- a smash hit. chicago's 1st disco song
2. Greatest Love on Earth- a very good slow love song
3. Little miss Lovin - a pretty decent song. pretty good guitar.
4. Hot Streets - a pretty decent song.
5. Take a Chance - one my favorite post-kath songs.
6. Gone, Long, Gone - another smash hit.
7. Ain't it Time - a pretty good song
8. Love was was new - my second favorite song on this record. Lamn vocals fits this song perfectlly.
9. No tell Love - another disco chicago song.
10.Show me the way- okay.
Don't let the cover turn you away from buying this record. don't always judge a book by it's cover.

4 out of 5 stars CHICAGO KEEPS THE FLAME.......2006-01-21

As a devout fan of the original line-up, one cannot imagine what the intense emotions were for the band when they entered the studio to cut this album. But what a TREMENDOUS energy and effort shine through! On the contrary to some other reviews, Chicago XI while sending some prophetic chills down the spine of those who love them stands up well as a 'maintenance' album, Hot Streets comes out of the box 'swinging', as the band channels their many emotions into the best effort they would put forth until '83's stellar XVI comeback. This is perhaps the best showing of the Cetera/Seraphine rhythm section since Chicago III and or VII, and the Robert Lamm compositions are never more complex or tighter (Hot Streets) throughout this late seventies period. This album is ENTIRELY listenable and NOT dated or TIRED as XI certainly is today, a pity the energy evaporated for the XIII and XIV albums. Hot Streets stands as a testimony to the Band's resiliency in the face of unfathomable tragedy, keeps the Mojo (Little Miss Lovin') working and sincere (Terry would be proud) and exemplifies how Chicago could be on top and stay ahead of the game with ALL the Seventie's vast musical evolution

2 out of 5 stars The Band's Lowest Point.......2005-04-04

They'd just split with long-time producer/mentor James William Guercio when guitarist Terry Kath accidentally shot himself. The rest of the band thought about packing it in. TONIGHT SHOW bandleader Doc Severensin talked them out of it.

They auditioned for Kath's replacement. They picked Donnie Dacus, former Steve Stills session-man and HAIR co-star. Rhino Records has recently released a remastered version of the results. Sad to say, time hasn't been kind. HOT STREETS gets my vote as the worst Chicago album. The production is often tinny, and many of the tunes wouldn't warrent a B-side.

Dacus traditionally shoulders much of the blame. And, yeah, I have to admit that I've done my share of Dacus-bashing in the past. But, truth be told, no one could've replaced Terry Kath in Chicago in that situation successfully (Bill Champlin said recently that he was called the day after Kath's death, but--wisely?--turned down the offer). This is not to say that I don't believe Dacus has his faults. His singing is strained, and his lyrics aren't good. But his guitar playing isn't as awful as reviewers like me may have lead you to believe. I guess it was tough for a Chicago fan to shake off the shock of losing Kath, and Dacus became the natural whipping-boy because he was no Terry (and because he was there). So, 27 years later, I'll finally accept what happened and move on. Here endeth my penance.

Dacus can't bear all of the blame for what's wrong with this album anyway. HOT STREETS features some weak work from the Chicago vets. Songs such as "Gone Long Gone," "Take a Chance," and "Show Me the Way" indicate that Lee Loughnane, Pete Cetera, and Dan Seraphine were battling creative demons (and, as the liner notes indicate, various addictions, too). Robert Lamm's "Love was New" is equally as bad. Dacus contributes "Ain't It Time"; while he pens a decent guitar riff, the song is done in by a weird melody and bad lyrics.

There are some good things happening. Jimmy Pankow's "Alive Again" and Cetera's "Little Miss Lovin'" are worth a listen, even though Phil Ramone's lite-rock production emasculates them. "No-Tell Lover" is a decent ballad, as is "The Greatest Love on Earth" (admittedly, not for all tastes). And Lamm's title track, though not one of my favorites, showcases some good horn lines and a decent Dacus guitar solo.

The bonus track is an alternate take on "Love Was New," featuring Dacus on vocals (Lamm sings the released version). The liner notes for this edition are well done, though perhaps too enthusiastic about the resultant work.

Your enjoyment of HOT STREETS will, of course, depend on your taste. It's certainly not the worst record ever made. On the other hand, fans like me, who like the heavier stuff from Chicago, will probably never consider this set a highlight.

I actually lived the words to the club mix version of this song in the hayday of the San Francisco Club scene, the beat is great! I was a personal friend of the founder of Moby Dick records. PS: Do any of the CD's have the speaking version on them as I lost all my vinyl in a huge home fire back in 1995 and only have it on cassette tape now. Any input would be of great help! Thanks

Album Description

We could probably start off by you telling how Uptown Sinclair's self-titled debut was recently voted “Best Regional CD” by the Editor's of Cleveland's Scene Magazine or how Time Out New York repeatedly encourages the locals to go see the band whenever they blow into town or even how singer/guitarist Dave Hill once ate fifteen raw jalapeno peppers in less than two minutes, but really, would any of that make you instantly fork over the cash for Uptown Sinclair's smoking hot slab of rock-n-roll goodness?

What you really need to know is that Uptown Sinclair rocks fiercely and, at times, uncontrollably. They have really tight pants. They are adored by Canadians, the elderly, and at least one man in Germany. They are dashing, they are bold, and, above all else, they are caring. Whenever they play their hot rock music, people dance, scream, and soil themselves completely.

Uptown Sinclair smell nice, they are always on time, and they bake their own bread. They get fan mail from deaf people. They use profanity, but only for dramatic effect. Most importantly, however, Uptown Sinclair write and play kickass rock songs. Take the very best of Cheap Trick, Husker Du, The Cars, Pixies, Guided By Voices, Elvis Costello, Barry White, Motorhead, T. Rex, Matthew Sweet, and Led Zeppelin; whip it all together and then imagine it being cranked out by four young men who have clearly never worn a backward baseball cap a single day of their lives, and you are beginning to approximate the sound of Uptown Sinclair.

Uptown Sinclair's self-titled debut for D-text Records, recorded over the course of several months with Mr. Colson (Smashing Pumpkins, Paw, the Urge, Walt Mink, Remy Zero, HBO's "Reverb"), Michael Seifert (Guided By Voices, Bone Thugz N Harmony) and Michael Parnin (Marilyn Manson, Len, Motorhead), will make you believe in hot rock music again. And who knows, it might even get you laid. When's the last time that happened to you for less than twenty bucks?

A stunning performance! The remarks about the crotch sweat stains are particularly awesome considering the author of that review is talking about himself.

Congrats to all!

5 out of 5 stars Uptown Sinclair = Badass Rock Band.......2002-10-01

I first read about Uptown Sinclair in CMJ where they got a glowing review recently. I checked out a few tunes online first and was immediately hooked. Uptown kind of reminds me of the Kinks, Fountains of Wayne, Dismemberment Plan, Replacements, and Prince all swirled together in an awesome kind of way. I know everyone talks about how they can't understand why they're favorite indie rock band isn't huge already, but seriously I don't understand why these guys aren't huge already. Get this disc, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better Live.......2002-08-31

One of the best rock shows to come to town every 6 months or so is Uptown Sinclair. With an extravagant light show and energetic stage performances, an Uptown Sinclair rock show is a kicking you won't soon forget. The CD really comes to life during a live show and you can always count on a new tune to be played at each show. Not to mention that curious sweat ring that starts to form around lead singer Dave Hill's crotch that makes you wonder what's going on in there...

5 out of 5 stars this band does not suck.......2002-02-07

it's great to hear a band do some full-on rocking out. uptown sinclair's album is packed with great songs in the vein of cheap trick, elvis costello, t rex, the cars, etc. while still maintaining its own thing throughout. this album lives in my car. in a perfect world, uptown sinclair would be huge.

4 out of 5 stars Uptown Sinclair: How rock music should be..........2002-01-02

Once in a blue moon I will hear a song that right away makes me think, "wow, I wish I'd written that". Never has there been an album that has had more than one of those instances, until now. Cleveland, Ohio based (and my hometown)Uptown Sinclair have delivered one of the tastiest, catchiest, hook-laiden rock albums that gets imprinted into your very soul with each listen. Loud, catchy guitars, driving beats, hummable, sugar sweet melodies and brilliant lyrics make the listener remember what good, old fashion pop-rock is all about. "Face Down" and "Sentimental" are one of THEE most catchiest songs I've ever heard. Perfect in every facet: melody, lyric, hooks, etc. Those are the two songs I wish I'd writen. "Girlfriend" is the song that guarantees that the listener will be singing along with the chorus upon first listen. "Never Miss A Thing" is a beautiful, straight forward, stripped down ballad that melts the listeners heart with it's quiet acoustic guitar, Rhodes electric piano and haunting vocal. "Intermediate" starts off with a sweet piano intro that is akin to Tom Petty meets Third Eye Blind then kicks into Uptown Sinclairs trademark, happy/catchy stop/start guitar attack. "Landslide" is a strong track that sounds like the offspring of Big Star & Cheap Trick with it's bluesy slide guitar. "Whatever U Want" is the song that seems best fit for driving around in the summertime with your top down, singing as loudly as you can to the happy crunch of the song. "First Thing In The Morning" is an emotional song that sounds like something that J. Mascis could have written at 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning. "Superman" is a sugar coated plea to a woman, telling her, "you gotta get away from Superman, you gotta get away from him" that blends soft acoustic guitar, old moog synths and organs with the "woo hoo hoo's" of the Stones. This album would have been 5 out of 5 stars, but I gave it 4 stars, as I'm saving the last star for the other brilliant songs that were left off of the album. It's ashame that the music industry is too busy catering to rap/metal bands and premanufactured boy/girl bands, because I guarantee when the pendulum swings back towards true pop/rock, Uptown Sinclair will be millionaires.

3 out of 5 stars A variable release for CHICAGO.......2005-07-22

I want to refute Bill Fleck again, but not so hard this time. Donnie Dacus isn't quite as bad as Bill Fleck say's. I too was a big fan of Terry Kath, so really no one could fill the shoes of Terry. Hey Bill, give Donnie a break!!! I think even if Terry wouldn't have died, they would have been going down hill at this point anyway. This album does have three great songs which are; "Alive again", "No Tell Lover", and "Gone Long Gone", but "Alive Again" is a song that always fires me up, and gets me out of the doldrums. But the album pretty much sucks, after those three hits. Also Bill, what's the matter with CHICAGO XIII!!!! It didn't sell very well, but I really enjoy most of it. I would say CHICAGO XIV was the stinker. They did get back on track with CHICAGO 16, 17, and 18. But I would buy this anyway, just for the three aformentioned songs. SO BILL, LIGHTEN UP, IF YOU CAN!!!!

P.S. Hey Steven R. Fleck!!! I don't know if you're are or are a relative of Bill Fleck but if you aren't you are just as crazy as him. I don't see how you think "Alive Again" is a terrible song (in fact it's one of the greatest Chicago songs ever), and I don't see how Daucus played such a bad guitar solo on the track. It may have even been played by Terry that same way too. It's a hard driving song which can lift your spirits very quickly. "No Tell Lover" isn't bad either, and is also one of the best Chicago songs ever. "Gone Long Gone" is also a killer song to boot. Now if you want to take issue with the rest of the tracks, then, that's alright to me, but three great tracks make this worth buying I must say. JUST GET SOME TASTE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Hot Streets.....Chicago, before they started to suck .......2005-04-12

This is a great album if you are a fan of the original Chicago. If you're hung-up on personlities, member changes and blind sentiments you'll hate it. I've read reviews remarking unflatteringly on Donnie Dacus'guitar work and vocals. Don't believe it! He rocks. The music recorded by Chicago since Donnie left the band is awfull. This album represents a final chapter in the band's sound before they got sappy, soft, and lost their hard edge. I've loved this album ever since the first time I listened to it. I haven't bought a Chicago album since.

4 out of 5 stars Don't let critics decide for you.......2001-04-12

Though this recording was killed by just about every critic who heard it, it's still a great Chicago album if you're into what they've done over all this time. Like everyone else I was upset over the loss of Terry Kath, who was at his strongest as a composer and instrumentalist at his untimely death. Most were too busy complaining about the guitar work of new player Donnie Dacus to listen to the other members of the band doing great work on this recording. Making this album hard to find on disc 'cause of lack of demand until recently. The songs are great, the horn arrangements are as good as ever. Although I must admit even to this day the song "Alive Again" strikes me as weird timing and taste. There's a couple of Dacus' compositions which are quite creative if you take the time to listen. I had this on cassette for years so when I went to turn all my Chicago albums to CD this one was the one that wasn't in most store/warehouse collections. If you like Chicago you'll like this recording, but if you didn't like the other recordings around this same time period you won't like this one either.

2 out of 5 stars Should've Quit While They Were Ahead.......2001-03-02

"Hot Streets" reminds me of a jigsaw puzzle that doesn't have any pieces that fit! Yes, there's a lot there but it just doesn't come together.

The biggest misfit on this album is Donnie Dacus. Dacus is a pretentious guitar player and a lousy singer. After seeing him on "Saturday Night Live" with the rest of the band 22 years ago, I came away with the impression that Dacus is a Pete Townshend wannabe--and a sorry one at that! What Dacus lacks in substance he tries to make up for in flash. But that's not saying a whole lot either.

Why the surviving band members chose this latent hippie for a lead guitarist still baffles me. Dacus' style--if you want to call it that--doesn't fit in with the group's chemistry. After listening to this album, you'll see why.

The only songs where Dacus doesn't bollox things up too much are on "Hot Streets" and "Alive Again." On "No Tell Lover," Dacus is more of a background instrumentalist so, for all intents and purposes, he's irrelevant. For the most part, though, "Hot Streets" and "No Tell Lover" fit into the group's mold and they keep this album from being a total bust.

However, I'd advise anyone who is a long time fan of the group to avoid this album as it would be out of place in your Chicago collection. Instead, you might be better off downloading a few of these songs on disc or going to your library to rent the CD. All in all, this is a lackluster if not forgettable album.

2 out of 5 stars Not-so-Hot Streets.......2001-02-28

Before this album was released in September 1978, I was a serious Chicago fan and I was saddened by the untimely death of the inimitable Terry Kath. After Kath died, I had my doubts about the group's ability to carry on and after listening this album, my doubts were confirmed. This album is nothing more than a salvage job and it shows.

Donnie Dacus is nothing more than a showboat and his guitar style is long on flash but short on substance. Dacus' flashy style is OK on tracks like "Alive Again" and "Hot Streets" but it flops elsewhere--much like his singing!

The only songs on this album that keep it from being a TOTAL DISASTER are "Alive Again", "Hot Streets" and "No Tell Lover." Robert Lamm's vocal is probably one of his best ever and Walt Parazaider's flute solo is captivating. "No Tell Lover" is another solid Peter Cetera tune. If nothing else, this is one of the few songs where Donnie boy isn't at the forefront.

Long-time Chicago fans will find this album disappointing. I'm just glad the group dumped Donnie after their 13th album as he clearly wasn't a good fit. Still, Chicago without Terry Kath is like The Who without Keith Moon.

            Album Description

On December 7, 1997 at the Woodstock Jewish Congregation I offered a concert entitled "Songs of Love, Hope and Courage". Several of the songs benefitted from the wonderful musical accompaniment of Zoe B. Zak and Geoff Miller. Here is the live recording of that lovely evening, produced by Zoe B. Zak. I am thrilled to share it with you. I chose to sing songs that move and inspire me, and I hope that they move and inspire you. Here's to love, hope, and courage!

(All proceeds from the sale of this recording benefit the Woodstock Jewish Congregation.)
