Neil Halstead is emerging as one of the greatest country singers Great Britain has ever birthed. Such a list might be short, but Halstead is leading it nonetheless. Having contributed two outstanding tracks to Manifesto Records' Tim Buckley tribute album,
Sing a Song for You, Halstead and his band are on a solid creative roll.
Excuses for Travellers, Mojave 3's third album, is arguably the band's best. Any previous tentative feelings have been replaced by the confident, delicate roll of pedal steel that sweeps through these bittersweet tunes. "In Love with a View," "Trying to Reach You," and "When You're Drifting" stick out immediately, but most of these songs unpeel slowly with each listen. Just as the Cowboy Junkies and Nick Drake--to whom they are not necessarily compared but definitely spiritually connected--quietly pleaded their case, Mojave 3 are determined to mature subtly.

excellent follow up to "out of tune".......2006-10-08
This is a jewel. Mojave 3 at top form. I love so much about this album it's hard to recap. There's Neil's voice and his melodies, Rachel's subtle background vocals, great guitars, including quite a bit of pedal steel, which blends with that thick hammond, beautiful piano lines, superb arrangments ( including different horns, banjo..). To my ear, it's all blended perfectly. Starts right off with probably the best song "in love with a view", hold on to your socks, it'll carry you...The rest doesn't lag behind much though, with other very strong songs, amongst which "anyday will be fine", "prayer for the paranoid", "she broke you so softly" ( reminiscent of Nick Drake, whose music I've loved for over 30 years), "got my sunshine" (congrats Ian), "krazy koz". This CD grew on me and sticks at a high level, still a favorite after many listenings, going in my player regularly.
Will Always Be One of My Favorites .......2005-09-18
I first owned this on record. This is the perfect album for:
Roadtrips alone.
Roadtrips with a good friend.
A broken heart.
Anytime.
Neil Halstead reminds me of Nick Drake. Prayer for the Paranoid is a great song. I like that so far all of Mojave 3's albums have sounded somewhat different. This album has more of an "Out of Tune" feel to it than "Ask Me Tomorrow". It isn't Slowdive, but that's fine because it's nice to hear more than one type of music from a good band.
The Only Album I've Found So Far To Make The Banjo Sound Beautiful To My Ears.......2005-09-14
Mojave 3 are an amazing group, combining folk/shoegazing/and tads and pieces of country to make great ablums. Excuses for Travelers is a great album full of beautiful music that I would recomend to anyone. This album also has the distinct fact of being the only album that I've found that can use a banjo and make me love it. (I usually have a strong fear/dislike of the banjo) So, in other words, pick-up the damn album.
I cant stop listening to it.......2005-09-02
This is a remarkable CD. I love every song and I can't help but listen to this cd almost every day. Its perfect for any time of day. The songs that stick out for me are "In Love with a View," "My life in Art," "Return to Sender," and "When You're Drifting" though every song is beautiful and worth your time. It is one of cd's that I listen to the most even though I haven't listen to much of the other works by Halstead. But I assure you that even if you're not a fan of slowdive or even Rock and Roll, this CD will make you feel good and it will be one of your favorites. It is one of those CDs that you make sure your friends and family listen to intently to make sure they hear all the amazing sounds that Mojave 3 make on this album. Do yourself a favor and buy the album. It's worth whatever you have in your wallet.
Excuses for travelling!.......2003-08-24
The music of Mojave 3 makes you chill out in your sofa such as walk through the beautiful Rio de Janeiro "in love with a view". it's Definitely worth every cent spent and months of delay until the cd could be found here. Neil Halstead's voice could not be more appropriated, such as the album title "Excuses for travellers" for a perfect driving, on a long trip through beautiful scenarios. Maybe the green and sunny England in summer time, maybe the Mojave desert. Inspiring for poets and ordinary people as well.

Deceptively easy listening.......2000-08-07
Music for Travellers is an album that takes it easy -- but give it time to sink in and it will reward you with a slow burning ardor.
Pray for sunshine.......2000-07-26
"Excuses for Travellers" is Mojave 3's third album, and in many ways it continues where "Out of Tune" left off. It has that same quality of sweetly regretful, slightly faded, country-flavoured melancholy, all gently strummed guitars, strings, banjos, harmonicas, brass sections, hammond organs and even a gospel choir. Though the level of songwriting is not quite as consistent as on "Out of Tune", there are some lovely moments. Return to Sender and When You're Drifting are two of them, while My Life in Art is a gorgeously melodic seven minutes - acoustic guitar, harmonica and hammond organ combining with sweetly mellow vocals to infuse the song with a warmth and tenderness that few can match. The way that Neil's and Rachel's voices complement each other is one of Mojave's great strengths, and perhaps underused on this album. "Excuses for Travellers" undoubtedly peaks with Prayer for the Paranoid, a poignantly beautiful acoustic ballad reminiscent of Nick Drake at his best. Overall, Mojaves 3's latest album is a warm, gentle affair, using very traditional songwriting forms to good effect. It won't blow you away, but it may well draw you in.
A beautiful album all the way through.......2000-07-26
i bought this album in england while i was there on vacation. once i heard the first track, "In Love With a View," i was hooked. i went back and purchased "Ask Me Tomorrow" which is also a great album. But this album is my all-time favorite. The songs are so fragile and Neil Halstead's lyrics are beautiful. They produced an innovative form of folk rock. I will always cherish this album.
