Their sophomore Polyvinyl full-length. Michigan's own greasy haired heartthrob, Fred Thomas, is the indie rock generation's answer to the masterfully crafted sound walls and legendary arrangements of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and George Martin. The 60's pop vibe that runs through the band's catalog is still prevalent, but there's also a new undercurrent flowing between poetry and desperation. This is their most lyrically astute, flawlessly arranged, and fully-realized work to date. Note: the LP version contains different instrumentation, mixes, arrangements, and vocalists than the CD, although the track listing is the same. Both formats will contain inserts explaining the differences between the two.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

An objective Bright eyes review.......2005-10-23

Well, before buying this I had never even heard of bright eyes. Just so you know my background, I generally dislike indie and Emo. I usually listen to hardcore and Screamo. But for some reason I became interested in this band. (or person)
Someone compared a CD of their's to A Death Cab CD. Me being a pretty big Death Cab fan, I decided to go out and buy this EP to see if I liked this band at all. This review is the result of that listen.

The EP opens up with the slow acoustic guitar picks of "a line allows prgress"... A few seconds into the song I am greeted with with drums and an organ. This song sounds like a slower Cursive song. The guy's voice sounds decent. I guess the vocal effects he uses are for emotional purposes. Overall this is a pretty decent song. It reminds me of hotel california.

Next in line comes one of my favorite tracks on here: "a perfect sonnet". I don't know if it's the simple guitar stum or the sense that his voice is going to explode any moment. Seriously, the whole song I was thinking that everything was about to fall apart...but it didn't. He keeps going and going. It must be his voice that creates this mood. This was also the point of the CD where I realized that it was a bit more than music I was listening to. Bright eyes will make you feel moods that other music can't. It's got a unique brand of emotion that is new to me. It's too bad this song ends so quickly.

As I press on to: "on my way to work" I begin to get the feel for the CD. He's almost whispering on this track. There's an odd sounding guitar picking and a country sounding synthesizer. Quite frankly, I hate this song. It sounds like an offkey country ballad... Who wants that?

The next two tracks are more or less the same feel. A new arrangement provides better quality music than the craptastic on my way to work, but doesn't reach the level of A perfect sonnet.

Finally, the EP is ended with the techno atmospheric: Neely o hara... I don't know what to say. It's meaningless. I don't see how you can like this. It's just pointless.

Overall this is a half and half EP. The first two tracks are good... But the rest of the CD falls between failing and decent. If Bright Eyes good churn out more tracks like a perfect sonnet, this band would get at least a 4 star. Sadly thats not the case. So I don't recommend this for anyone other than the really dedicated fans. Perhaps the other CD's are better.

God it is soo perfect that i cant even begin to describe.

Every day&Every night starts with "a line allows progress,a circle does not",a song that also holds the album title inside its gracefull lyrics;"this feeling always used to pass,but now it's every day and every night."it is a song about someone who forgot the purpose of her life,someone totally lost and alone, have nothing to do but get drunk and looking for an exit desperately.As they always does;conors lyrics tell the story in a natural,mournful way with lyrics that will haunt you whenever you hear them in your ordinary life.The song will pass you by with its haunting guitar melodies and will probably leave you questioning your own life,possibly with tears in your eyes..

Then,as you think if connor can ever do anything more touching then this one,"a perfect sonnet" will begin.And believe me no words i say is enough to tell you how touching,moving,rocking, devastating this song is!!As the song gets slower and faster over and over,it will make you think about each line connor tells,each section;which is another dagger to your heart,and you may cry over and over screaming this song in nights thinking of everything you did wrong and everything you've lost for all your life.

Ýt's a classic bright eyes song,what can i say?!!!

"Then comes on my way to work" a song questioning about the passing life and death,in a way that you dont really wanna like thinking about.The song is not that great as overall,but it is still bright eyes,and it has the quality to turn you upside down in the moment you least expect,by some line you've missed out before,or some piece of melody that you havent noticed...

A new arrangement;it resembles to arienette,one of the greatest bright eyes song ever;it's not as good as arienette but it is like a passage,a preparation to it.The most of this ep resembles fevers&mirrors,so if it has been released just before it,it'd make total sense.

The last song,i didnt got into it yet,never even listened it with all my ears but i'm sure sime time from now i'll really see what that song is about and it'll effect me just like all the others did in time.


A final,important note..Yes ; bright eyes songs are not songs to listen and just,like.You need to be ready for the songs and for the things he'll say to you,otherwise they will probably not make sense.

i see that some people are giving low stars to bright eyes telling that BE is not a great musician or a lyricist as we all say,and they blame him for pretending to be sad.and i just want to say that i know,that these people are just not ready,or not strong enough for him,and sadly some of them will never be.

but if you are one of those deep people,still confused about the way life works and ends,or figuring out how love matters to give a meaning to it all,buy this EP..you'll not regret i promise

misunderstood, i think.......2004-11-26

listening to a variety of bright eye's albums over the last few days in particular, i found myself disecting the "depressive" feel to it all. i've decided that bright eye's music isn't depressing at all. it's just realism with a dark use of symbolism/metaphor. I think that the utter darkness of it all just helps to force the listener into thinking about it all at a deep level. it moves you to really consider the notions and concepts that he picks at.

anyway, anything by bright eyes is definately worth purchasing, and i hope people who maybe thought otherwise at first, can understand his music a little better after reading this :)

Such sweet sorrow.......2004-10-23

Every Day and Every Night is indie rock(?) at its best. It packs a lot of emotional punch without any cheese! Its poetic and highly interspective. Conner Oburst deals with a lot of darkness in the this EP. AND, it just sounds good. The style is dynamic: melodic and catchy yet original and unconventional. I could decribe Bright Eyes style as -elements of blue-grass and folk combined with acoustic indie rock. Sometimes there is screaming/sobbing, sometimes there are clean cut, pretty harmonies. That sounds strange I know. But give it a chance if you like bands like Cursive, Grandaddy, Modest Mouse, etc. Every Day and Every Night is deep and passionate and if you're deep and passionate, you just might like it.

5 amazing songs=5 stars.......2004-05-27

This was the second Bright Eyes cd I purchased and I was quite impressed. Some of the songs on this cd have a deeper (more bass) sound than the songs on "Lifted" and it makes for a very interesting sound. I think that this cd, especially "A Perfect Sonnet", shows off Conor's poetic genius more than a few of the songs on "Lifted" do. The speaking transitions after "On My Way to Work" and "Neely O'Hara" are wonderful and should not be skipped. Every song on this cd is well worth it and there are no songs that will keep you from putting this whole album on repeat. Even though it is only five songs, it will leave you wanting more of Conor and his emotional poetry. Note: I just read "Valley of the Dolls" and discovered Conor's allusion to Neely O'Hara who "swallows her sleep," so just in case you ever wondered who she is, you can read the book and find out more of what Conor meant.

An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05

If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.

This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.

Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.

Whatever this is, it's awful.......2006-09-13

I have no idea why anyone would want to listen to this kind of music. I mean, it's extremely aggressive, and that's fine. It's also somewhat challenging to follow the beat, the music is constantly changing melody and time. I suppose if you are a metal musician of some sort this might be interesting. But the overall product is pretty off putting to anyone not punching holes in their walls or perhaps someone else. The lead singer screams every single word on the record. That's unfortunate, because some of the lyrics are clever, and could have been helped by NOOOOOOT-SCRE-AMINNNNNG EVERYTHIIIIINNG to help a subtle turn of phrase. Not only that, but he screams it against the music in such a way that when the band turns rhythms on a dime, he'll stop midsentence, or try and finish quickly before the band finds its next melody. Ruins the cadence of some of the prose. The music does not serve the lyrics here, it's all about the music, which is not as good as the lyrics for all of its ostensible technical merit or emotional value.

Hot Damn! is exactly the same, with girls french kissing on the cover. Get that one if you must have some Every Time I Die. I got suckered by hearing one song that sounded vaguely like one of the Jesus Lizard's more amped up outings, and so bought them both(used!). Otherwise, unless you dont play this stuff, jesus, buy something else. Your mom will worry if she hears you listening to it. And if you like it, perhaps she has reason to.

i'm not really sure how you can hate on every time i die if you're a fan of hardcore or whatever you want to call them. hell if your a fan of original, fun music... there's no reason you shouldn't like every time i die. the lyrics are almost indescribable with words... i refuse to believe that keith was serious about just rambling on the first three releases. this album follows along the same formula as the burial plot bidding war. it's heavier than hot damn! and gutter phenomenon... but that does not change anything... just the delivery is different. i highly recomend all of every time i die's albums. probably my favorite band lyrically

no breakdowns? did you hear this cd?.......2005-08-20

Ok...so i'm slowly developing a reputation for coming in a fixing the reviews by the earless people on this website. but no breakdowns on last night in town? did everyone listen to track 3? "...WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON...WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON"? the beat slows down...it gets more brutal and it's at the end...those who think that's what a stereotypical breakdown sounds like might've overlooked that. and considering that the red chord reevaluated what we call a breakdown there are actually breakdowns on half these songs...there's one on Jimmy Tango's Method, there's one on Here's Lookin' At You, there's one on...jesus people, suck it up...listen harder. Not all breakdowns are chug-chug beatdowns like remembering never, it dies today and throwdown. there are breakdowns on this cd...they just don't sound like all other breakdowns that you've ever heard...and considering that's the main draw of ETID (not sounding like everything else you've ever heard) you'd think people would've picked up on that...apparently not.

as far as the cd itself is concerned, etid is one've my three all time favorite bands, so i'm a little bit biased...but this album owns, as does hot damn, and the gutter phenomenon cd that comes out the 23rd, i've got it already, and it owns too...check out anything they've done, it's all good stuff. and i think the best thing about etid is that everyone raves about their lyrics and how clever they are, including me, i think they're genius...and keith buckley said in an interview that up until their newest cd he was just rambling incoherently...says something about 'modern art'. haha...anyway...check this out. i love it.

Very Solid Hardcore Album .......2005-06-24

One of my favorite bands, Every Time I Die. What can I say about their first album (Burial Bidding Plot doesn't count as an album)...it's fast, frenzied, and loud. Hot Damn! might have been THE album that put them on the map, but Hot Damn! carried a more "mosh party" feel to it opposed to the "slam dance til you die" feel of this album. The music itself is more sophisticated in the album opposed to Hot Damn!. I dare to say that Every Time I Die could have spawned a new style of mathcore with it's intense time signature changes and it's frenzied individual sound. The upcoming new album (to me personally) sounds really good...almost a combination of Hot Damn! and Last Night in Town. Every hardcore music lover should have this album.

I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.


Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

Apparently, Julian and Andrew Lloyd Webber's first collaboration occurred when the latter was 9 and the former 6. It took place on the stage of a toy theater, and Julian's role was then limited to operating the collection of tiny plastic soldiers that made up the cast of Andrew's latest musical. More than 40 years have passed since then but, as this disc proves, the brothers still enjoy a remarkable familial and musical relationship. Julian first recorded a series of cello arrangements of hits from Andrew's musicals in 1990, and this disc updates the enterprise with six new tracks from Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game , and Sunset Boulevard. The orchestral arrangements are deliciously soupy (especially "All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera, "Love Changes Everything" from Aspects of Love, and the Riverdance-esque "God's Own Country" from The Beautiful Game) and suit Julian's appropriately swoony and uninhibited approach to the music. Fans of the Lloyd Webbers shouldn't be disappointed. --Warwick Thompson

Awful and Tacky!.......2005-05-11

The reason I checked out this CD from local library is because I just watched the disappointing movie version of `Phantom of the Opera' and hoped Andrew Lloyd Webber who appears suffering from `over-esteem' would redeem himself in this format of presentation. It really would have worked, considered the similar quality of cello and human voice and the already famous melodies.

But it didn't! This is a tacky and totally forgettable presentation only suitable for elevators and ... well, you know, some public facilities. It makes the critically panned 'Phantom of the Opera' movie like a masterpiece! It's not so much the music's or musician's faults. There just isn't any thought process in the music making at all. If the cello is just going to play by the numbers, what's the point then? And the music arrangements on the orchestra side are just as shameful and insulting.

Compare to 'Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone', it's a clear example how a good taste of music adaptation can make a difference between Heaven and Hell.

Certainly Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote some superb melodies and certainly his brother Julian is an accomplished, outstanding cellist. That said, while it is fine to listen to a couple of these songs at a time played in this format, the real greatness of Andrew was in his collaboration with his lyricists like Tim Rice, and the songs just work better in my opinion as Broadway/theatre, with the rich diversity of soloists who have sung them.

I got an e-mail recommending this CD....Being the Andrew Lloyd Webber fan that I was, I just decided to buy it thinking it was his greatest hits by the original casts of his Play.

Boy was I wrong...but pleassantly so. Julian Lloyd Weber does a brilliant job of his brothers work...Purely instrumentational and incredibly beautiful... definately worth buying if your are ALW fan

An updated and improved version of Lloyd Webber plays Lloyd Webber. The original was great; and this new one is even better. The old songs have been enhanced, and there are six new selections from Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind (the title song featuring Andrew on piano) and the two best Andrew songs brother Julian has ever done: "Our Kind of Love" and "God's Own Country" from the Beautiful Game. Even if you aren't into the Lloyd Webber brothers, any fan of classical and/or show music would absolutely love this CD.

A Wonderful Work by My All Time Favorite Artist.......2002-02-26

Lee Roy Parnell is the most under rated artist in the business by the so-called powers that be. He's a perfectionist with his music as demonstrated by his wonderful voice, his unprecedented mastery of the slide guitar, and his thoughtful, solid writing ability. In addition, he's a gentleman and is often referred to as the artists' artist. Highly respected by his peers and his fans.

A superlative effort.......2000-08-09

For the uninitiated, LRP is easily the finest slide guitarist in all of country music (perhaps all of music, period) and he is also an outstanding singer and songwriter. I saw him in concert at our fall fair in 1999 (not the first time) and was blown away (again) by his artistry.

Despite owning (and loving) several of his earlier records, I honestly believe that "Every Night's A Saturday Night" may be his finest achievement. The title track is an infectious tune, as is "Lucky Me, Lucky You." Lee Roy also romps through Merle Haggard's "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" in fine fashion. My nine-month old really likes to rock along (literally!) with Lee Roy on these three tunes.

However, this album also showcases Lee Roy's outstanding way with a ballad. Particularly noteworthy are "You Can't Get There From Here", "All That Matters Anymore", and "Better Word For Love." I recommend all three of these songs as prime examples of what true musical artistry is.

Blended throughout all of these songs is Lee Roy's truly amazing guitar work, which insinuates itself right into your head (and heart). I absolutely agree with the Entertainment Weekly review at the Amazon site, which says that LRP is looking more and more like an artist, rather than a star.

Just go buy it--if you do, it'll stay on your CD player for months, just like my copy has.
